Well they do but the lenses sit at a funny angle if you fit them to a hatchback (Cosworth or not) I have both mk1 & mk2 3-doors and know what’s what. The lights this bloke will have used is just standard mk2 Sierra 5-door hatchback lights, you know G’dads 1.8 lx.

    I grew up with these in Ireland and did 2 projects in College on Cossies. The South African market 3 door Sierras had the Mustang 5.0 V8 of which I was always jealous. The original engine in the Sierra RS had a second set of injectors so the cars with head studs and minor mods could make 500 hp reliably.
    I suppose the 2.3 in reminiscent of the XR4ti but the 2.0 from the Sierra RS Cosworth was a superior engine, bred for racing.
    I think the 3.5 ecoboost would have been a stunning unit to drop in here. If the 5.0 V8 fit I bet the V6 could with mods.
    That front bumper though, got to go. Original RS500 with the ducted brake cooling vents where the fog lamps would sit.
    I see you added the last generation tail lamps too from the later gen Sierras. Nice. The only 3 door Cossie (clone) with AC too.
    Congratulations on it. I’d buy it in FL
    - How did you guys do the 3/4 rear window conversion?

    • @Lazerus2008
      @Lazerus2008 Год назад

      Im not sure about the US cars but the 2 door shell without the 2 part rear window wa only available as 1.3L Sierra and the 3 door cosworth . I think the SA cars and US cars were all the same as the UK XR4i cars so they either cut the metal out or they got a three door shell from Europe. And no, the Cosworth engine was not designed to go racing. The 2.0 Cosworth engine only special because of the head and turbo. The rest is just a plain Ford 2 litre Pinto which was available in the Cortina and Granada. That is not to say that it didnt do well when it was sent racing though.

    • @briancorkery4083
      @briancorkery4083 Год назад +1

      Yeah you’re right about the pinto block. When the Sierra sales were in the doldrums, Ford sent that block to Cosworth. The engine was built from day one with a minimum target of 500 bhp with 8 injectors and a garret Turbo.
      The road going cars would all retain the the 8 fuel injectors but only 4 were active:
      An Intercooler was also added to drop inlet temperatures. That pinto block was a beast, but no Ford head could be mated to make the power for the World touring Cars, to beat the Nissan Skyline, the BMW M3 and the Mercedes 2.3-16 Cosworth.. Cosworth built that head specifically with the pinto block as it’s foundation. Amazing really.
      As for the rear 3/4 windows, all 3 door Sierras had the one piece, except the XR4i, and that was adopted on the XR4ti when Ford tried to make the Sierra a world car. The US DOT rules, mandated the US style bumpers, the rear fog lights deleted, the headlights and front foglights changed.
      The 2.3 liter in this car is the XR4ti block that came from the 4 cylinder Mustang. I never liked that engine but it could meet US emissions, and it fit mod free, so the XR4ti got that 170+hp, which was better than the Cologne 2.8 V6 in the XR4i.
      Unfortunately in a culture where V8’s were the norm, and 6 cylinder engines were considered basic, the XR4ti was always doomed to me with a 4 cylinder engine.
      Even Sierra Cosworths sounded like diesel fiestas at idle.
      All of this makes me think that 3.5 twin turbo ecoboost would be a perfect engine for this project car.

    • @ohh488
      @ohh488 Год назад

      The 3.5 ecoboost engine is really heavy and sits up high the 2.3 ecoboost is a good swap to replace the 2.0 it has more torque and they have forged internals from the factory the only weak point of the engine is the turbo and engine block other than that put some performance spark plugs in it, a better head gasket, aftermarket intercooler and e85 you have 360-400whp and 400+ wtq.

    As a Brit that lives in the Ford Cosworths natural development area/spiritual homeland in Essex, England this is a lovely reimagination of the Cosworth hatchback. As a kid i used to fish with my dad right by Fords test track in Boreham, Esssex and we used to hear Cosworths and RS200s being severely thrashed/tested! A great soundtrack to fish too haha! These cars go for CRAZY money here these days, especially the original RS500. To think these cars were fully stripped out to super lightweight and then the Cosworth developed Ford engines tuned to 500+bhp all the way back in the 80s! I believe that the Ford Sierra Cosworth (in its various guises as in RS500, hatchback, Sapphire, Sapphire 4x4) is one of if not THE most successful racecar EVER made!
