If I were AEW, I'd have Will Osprey lose the first match to Swerve, win a rematch, then set up a major final battle with a stipulation. That's how you make Swerve's title reign look as credible as possible while also making things interesting

With so many options in the world, including the world of wrestling, maintaining a scarcity myth is intellectually lazy at this point. Even if Ospreay wins in London, it doesn’t mean Swerve loses. Have a banger and he can cement himself as an icon. If successful, he can have multiple reigns and feuds with Ospreay, Okada, Omega, Page, MJF etc. where he can stand toe to toe with those guys as one of them the way MJF has. And he can drop or reclaim the title in those feuds.

@@Rcurtis777 that's also part of my point. Think about this: between Okada, Ospreay, and Mone, TK has committed close to $13 million a year - just on those three. And each of them are on three-year deals. You better believe TK is going to push them immediately to the forefront, OG's be damned. Swerve winning is just a placeholder for Ospreay, just as Kingston was a placeholder for Okada, and now, Willow for Mone.
Ospreay will end up getting all the matches that Swerve won't as champ - Swerve won't be able to go toe-to-toe with the likes of Omega and MJF (Injury and injury/supposed FA), and we've already seen him face Page multiple times. As Alfred said, there isn't anyone that has really been built up as a potential feud for Swerve, and they've had a year to figure it out. That's the difference between a build like they have with (example) Cody Rhodes and now Becky Lynch. With Cody, they legit have many ways to go, since the title can switch between shows. With Becky, almost anyone she faces elevates their status as a result (keyword "almost").

If Tony understood storytelling Starks would be made by now. Everyone that gets over in AEW is usually by sheer force of will. Ricky did that and got buried for it. I don't blame him for kicking the tires on the performance center.

As a white life time pro wrestling fan. I've watched and rooted for Swerve before he was Swerve. If you seen this man's work in Lucha Underground as Killshot along with many other now WWE Superstars,he deserved better in WWE. He was just finding the character that we see today. And if you watched him in LU as Killshot, you'd know exactly what this man is capable of inside the ring. Before Will Ospreay was even a six foot string bean flying around and jobbing out in ROH. I agree with you Alfred, but Swerve also gets the checkmark for being a talented wrestler and getting over to be in a position to win the AEW championship. Arguably WWE dropped the ball by letting him go. When it's all said and done, Swerve should still be the winner when he drops the belt. He can then go back to WWE, take his gimmick, music and Nana with him and feud with Trick Williams for many years to come.
Meanwhile Trick Willy is gonna be the face of NXT on CW Also interesting AEW brings in the NJPW world title on Moxley at the same time Swerve gets the AEW title. So like now theres 2 world titles
Damn, literally one episode of Dynamite after Dynasty and this vids already aged so well. Swerve got the win against the ROH champ but he basically got buried in segment two. The companies champion isn't even involved in the main plot thread of the show. Also on an unrelated tangent...so the Elite are the new big bad faction? whatever happened to the undisputed kingdom? Weren't they supposed to be the new big bad? I know they're still on the show but much like how Swerves the champion now, AEW's done a good job burying both.
AEW celebrating the Swerve victory as the "First African-American Champion", just made me think, "Wait... First?... In like over 5 YEARS of existing at this point?" I don't think this is the brag they think it is.

I really hope Swerve has a lengthy title reign and not just a transitional champion. He really does deserve it. He is the best part of AEW with all the work he puts in with his character and in the ring. But with Wembley in a couple of months with how much momentum Ospreay has going into his home country and Tony Khan’s awful booking, looks like Swerve wont be getting that chance.

the only thing that makes me think Swerve might be in for a longer haul is that we *just* had Joe as a transitional champion... AEW has a better track record (outside of the Punk injuries) of long reigns--Joe is the only champion not embroiled in CM Punk injuries/drama to reign for under 150 days. that means the odds are *highly* in favor of Swerve lasting until the 21st of September. if he ties the next shortest reign, the initial reign by Jericho (182 days), that takes him to the 21st of October. I just can't see AEW hotshotting the title to anyone before that timeframe. Ospreay will probably wrestle one of Okada or Omega this year at All In--I don't see why they'd go face-vs-face for the title when there is so much more compelling both could be doing in Wembley. I could see the former (Okada) especially with Ospreay having problems not just with Kenny, but with the Elite in general. that also gives the Continental Championship a bit of prestige, lets Ospreay carry the belt into (and possibly through) the C2 tournament (to give the C2 more starpower), and lets Swerve drop the title to a heel to then transition to an Ospreay reign in 2025. EDIT: Ospreay-Strong CONFIRMED for Double or Nothing--Ospreay for SURE goes over and becomes International Champion, completely ducks Swerve at All In (he's holding that belt FOREVER) that gives Swerve a full reign, starting probably with a Hangman feud, maybe an Adam Cole/Undisputed Kingdom vs. Mogul Embassy story too. there is two guys who, for different reasons, will breathe down Swerve's neck as guys who "deserve the title" (Hangman continuing his story from the Joe/Swerve trifecta, Cole because his earmarked reign was replaced by Joe when Cole got injured). Takeshita could also be a champion contender (and the Don Callis family), and by then the new Elite could absorb Hangman and send Okada (sans Continental Championship) after the world title for WrestleDream. they *have* to know that they're passing through Tacoma for WrestleDream, and they *have* to be planning for Swerve to be a goddamn hero at WrestleDream. and him ripping the new Elite by toppling their top guy would be the best way to cement it. then, Swerve drops the title either at Full Gear in November or World's End in December. I'm not 100% hopeful, but all of this feels so much more sensible than hotshotting onto Ospreay, and feels like a set of feuds AEW would love to use.
Baron Corbin coming for Dave's head for dismissing Trick is going to age so well. Trick has 'IT', and he works to get better at a style that won't blow out his knees or give him a dozen concussions. You can also tell WWE see's him as a future guy, because at Stand And Deliver, you could feel that this was to lay the ground work for in 3-5 years to do Trick vs. Hayes at Wrestlemania for the biggest of the big boy titles.
I’m rewatching this after the first dynamite after Swerve’s win…. Dude had a random exhibition match. No fan fair at all and he’s actually over. Once Will wins I wanna see the same energy. Funny enough The Elite got more important billing so Tony could get some airtime.

I hear you and I do agree that Swerve Strickland should be like Miles Morales or even Hobie Brown because I feel in Spider Verse because I think that's more accurate, however let's be honest, Swerve Strickland is not as big as of a name as Will Osprey. He's not even as big a name as Kofi Kingston was pre WWE Championship. And sure maybe there's little to no hope at the end of the rainbow because Tony Khan is a 30 something year old teenager playing my career mode with his wrestling company, but there's still something positive about Swerve Strickland as AEW Champion and that is his will have a memorable reign. It's already starting off on the right foot, just look at his first PPV challenger, Christian Cage who at 50 years old is still as good if not better than he was in TNA 20 years ago. Compare that to Kofi Kingston's first PPV challenger Kevin Owens who is good but probably only got the opportunity because he was the first person Vince McMahon saw backstage. Also Kofi Kingston lost the WWE Championship to Brock Lesnar in 7 seconds on SmackDown then never got a rematch. Swerve Strickland will most likely lose the AEW World Championship to Will Ospreay at All In London 2 which is a PPV and it'll probably go over 25 minutes which means 25 minutes of wrestling and he will most likely get a rematch a week later at All Out if not the following PPV.
Swerve has the looks, charisma, in-ring ability, he can talk, and he's so damn cool, that the idea of him dropping the belt to the charisma vaccuum that is Ospreay makes me not even want to watch that match when it happens, not to mention that Swerve should have been the one to take the belt off of MJF.

After seeing Dynamite this last Wednesday, and how Swerve only got a mid card match and not a promo, like Jericho, and Willow did. This video, hits a whole lot different. He should of been the first thing we saw to open the show with fan fare, and promo. Not a match, against Kyle Fletcher. If MJF, Kenny, Moxley, Adam Page won the title, they would be celebrated, first thing on Dynamite. WHY Tony?

If you seen this man's work in Lucha Underground as Killshot along with many other now WWE Superstars,he deserved better in WWE. He was just finding the character that we see today. I agree with you Alfred, but Swerve also gets the checkmark for being a talented wrestler and getting over to be in a position to win the AEW championship. Arguably WWE dropped the ball by letting him go. When it's all said and done, Swerve should still be the winner when he drops the belt. He can then go back to WWE, take his gimmick, music and Nana with him and feud with Trick Williams for many years to come.
That's likely the endgame. With Vince gone, things will likely look a lot better for Swerve when (not if) he returns to the E.

The companies champion isn't even involved in the main plot thread of the show. Also on an unrelated tangent...so the Elite are the new big bad faction? whatever happened to the undisputed kingdom? the only thing that makes me think Swerve might be in for a longer haul is that we *just* had Joe as a transitional champion... AEW has a better track record (outside of the Punk injuries) of long reigns--Joe is the only champion not embroiled in CM Punk injuries/drama to reign for under 150 days. that means the odds are *highly* in favor of Swerve lasting until the 21st of September. if he ties the next shortest reign, the initial reign by Jericho (182 days), that takes him to the 21st of October. I just can't see AEW hotshotting the title to anyone before that timeframe.
Ospreay will probably wrestle one of Okada or Omega this year at All In--I don't see why they'd go face-vs-face for the title when there is so much more compelling both could be doing in Wembley. I could see the former (Okada) especially with Ospreay having problems not just with Kenny, but with the Elite in general. that also gives the Continental Championship a bit of prestige, lets Ospreay carry the belt into (and possibly through) the C2 tournament (to give the C2 more starpower), and lets Swerve drop the title to a heel to then transition to an Ospreay reign in 2025.
EDIT: Ospreay-Strong CONFIRMED for Double or Nothing--Ospreay for SURE goes over and becomes International Champion, completely ducks Swerve at All In (he's holding that belt FOREVER)
that gives Swerve a full reign, starting probably with a Hangman feud, maybe an Adam Cole/Undisputed Kingdom vs. Mogul Embassy story too. there is two guys who, for different reasons, will breathe down Swerve's neck as guys who "deserve the title" (Hangman continuing his story from the Joe/Swerve trifecta, Cole because his earmarked reign was replaced by Joe when Cole got injured). Takeshita could also be a champion contender (and the Don Callis family), and by then the new Elite could absorb Hangman and send Okada (sans Continental Championship) after the world title for WrestleDream. they *have* to know that they're passing through Tacoma for WrestleDream, and they *have* to be planning for Swerve to be a goddamn hero at WrestleDream. and him ripping the new Elite by toppling their top guy would be the best way to cement it. then, Swerve drops the title either at Full Gear in November or World's End in December.
I'm not 100% hopeful, but all of this feels so much more sensible than hotshotting onto Ospreay, and feels like a set of feuds AEW would love to use.
Baron Corbin coming for Dave's head for dismissing Trick is going to age so well. Trick has 'IT', and he works to get better at a style that won't blow out his knees or give him a dozen concussions. You can also tell WWE see's him as a future guy, because at Stand And Deliver, you could feel that this was to lay the ground work for in 3-5 years to do Trick vs. Hayes at Wrestlemania for the biggest of the big boy titles.

I hear you and I do agree that Swerve Strickland should be like Miles Morales or even Hobie Brown because I feel in Spider Verse because I think that's more accurate, however let's be honest, Swerve Strickland is not as big as of a name as Will Osprey. He's not even as big a name as Kofi Kingston was pre WWE Championship. And sure maybe there's little to no hope at the end of the rainbow because Tony Khan is a 30 something year old teenager playing my career mode with his wrestling company, but there's still something positive about Swerve Strickland as AEW Champion and that is his will have a memorable reign. It's already starting off on the right foot, just look at his first PPV challenger, Christian Cage who at 50 years old is still as good if not better than he was in TNA 20 years ago. Compare that to Kofi Kingston's first PPV challenger Kevin Owens who is good but probably only got the opportunity because he was the first person Vince McMahon saw backstage. Also Kofi Kingston lost the WWE Championship to Brock Lesnar in 7 seconds on SmackDown then never got a rematch. Swerve Strickland will most likely lose the AEW World Championship to Will Ospreay at All In London 2 which is a PPV and it'll probably go over 25 minutes which means 25 minutes of wrestling and he will most likely get a rematch a week later at All Out if not the following PPV.
Swerve has the looks, charisma, in-ring ability, he can talk, and he's so damn cool, that the idea of him dropping the belt to the charisma vaccuum that is Ospreay makes me not even want to watch that match when it happens, not to mention that Swerve should have been the one to take the belt off of MJF.
