AEW fans think he loves the WWE, but he often criticises it and says that Vince McMahon going national and killing the territories was the worst thing to happen to wrestling.
They did start that whole angle with Ospreay refusing to use the Tiger Driver anymore due to Bryan Danielson's injury, but then turned around and killed it unceremoniously by having Bryan Danielson return way too quickly, making Ospreay look stupid in the process (he was that shaken up over an injury that lasted a few weeks?).

AEW - too many promising buildups fizzle into nothing. you start to like somebody (e.g. Malakai Black, Jay White, Ricky Starks) only to be followed by silence. Swerve Strickland seems to be the exception but I wouldn't be surprised if he drops the belt to MJF only to be kicked to the curb.
To be fair, I DO hate how Tony has basically ravaged New Japan and the indies by signing every last wrestler he could find. There was real hype around smaller promotions in 2019, and AEW's constant hiring has damaged that.

AEW just doesn’t work. I remember when it first came out, my immediate impression was “oh this is just big budget indy wrestling,” and clicked it off. I hate to break it to some of you hardcore fans but that style doesn’t work outside of your bubble. It had as much initial success as it did because WWE was unwatchable but that style of wrestling was NEVER going to garner lasting mainstream attention. It just doesn’t work. Nobody cares to watch a bunch of skinny dorks in the ring have fake fights with no storylines. There is no suspension of disbelief or reason to care about what you’re looking at for the average casual viewer. The Bucks are not superstars. It’s why they never went to WWE. It’s why they never even went to NXT in the mid 2010s (when NXT was pretty much the perfected version of Indy wrestling). Those guys along with Jack Perry would be jobbers in any other era of nationally televised professional wrestling. No casual viewer is watching The Bucks and Jack Perry who look like they’re 260lbs combined turn heel and beat up sniveling Tony Khan and saying to himself “wow these guys are tough! I wonder who beats them” 😂
Perfect summary. I must be one of the minority that is a casual viewer of AEW. When I first heard of it, I was heavily interested not because it's not WWE, but because it was another wrestling company on national TV, and became an avid watcher in hopes of what great characters and stories they'll make, but I realized they put all their effort in pushing small dorks doing flips and dives and spotfests or outlaw mudshow darlings, and their blind loyalist fans just eat it up without criticism. They also expect us to know every damn wrestler coming from the indies. Now Vince is out, they have no excuse for trash booking. As for the Elite, I'm more of a: "Can someone just beat these guys please?" rather than: "Who's going to beat these guys?"

Chris Jericho used to say this but those he is currently aligned with don’t understand this at all. Why would you watch a bunch of skinny guys flip around and fake fight with no stakes when you can watch REAL fights every weekend in the UFC? AEW is so delusional they don’t even realize that the WWE isn’t even the leader in their industry. WWE is very aware of that, and that’s why they knew that their best case of success was merging with that entity and trying to offer a product that stands on its own. Real fighting is as popular as it’s ever been. You have to have to give the audience a reason to get invested in fake fights- larger than life characters and compelling storylines.

A good friend will tell you what you want to hear. A GREAT friend will tell you what you NEED to hear. This is a problem AEW has, that it doesn’t address. Having people being blindly loyal and telling you what you want to hear is fine, but sometimes that yes person mentality can be a major detriment. And sometimes you NEED that great friend that isn’t going to coddle or please you, but give you that brutal reality check you need. It doesn’t mean they’re a hater or want you to fail, on the contrary, they’re telling you it because they want you to succeed and thrive. It’s like a horrendously bad singer going on a national panel song competition, because their whole life their “friends and family” all told them they were great, and they end up believing it, and embarrassing themselves, no one ever gave them a reality check. One high spot doesn’t seem like it’s worth months and months on the shelf as far as individual performers. The biggest problem AEW has is with live attendance. Part of that is probably due to being unable to build a feud or story because everyone gets perpetually injured.

Kind of sucks that AEW is getting these ratings but there is are multiple reasons why AEW gets so many critics. I was curious about AEW when it started, liked it when Cody was there starting stories giving people oppertunities, I did not like the constant signing and disappearing of wrestlers as well as constant WWE mentioning and compairing how AEW is better than WWE but never going flag ship show to flag ship show. Here is the way I see AEW versus WWE as it should be rated and compaired, WWE's Raw versus AEW Dynomite, the ratings are not even close. WWE's Smackdown versus AEW's Collision, the ratings are even farther then the flag ship shows. WWE's NXT versus AEW's Rampage, Rampage does exist but the ratings like the show do not matter. Crititcs however love compairing WWE's development company NXT to AEW's Dynomite because it is the only way AEW can even come close to beating a part of WWE. Reality AEW has never gone against WWE like WCW and TNA have done. AEW just lacks the balls.

One high spot doesn’t seem like it’s worth months and months on the shelf as far as individual performers. The biggest problem AEW has is with live attendance. Part of that is probably due to being unable to build a feud or story because everyone gets perpetually injured.

Kind of sucks that AEW is getting these ratings but there is are multiple reasons why AEW gets so many critics. I was curious about AEW when it started, liked it when Cody was there starting stories giving people oppertunities, I did not like the constant signing and disappearing of wrestlers as well as constant WWE mentioning and compairing how AEW is better than WWE but never going flag ship show to flag ship show. Here is the way I see AEW versus WWE as it should be rated and compaired, WWE's Raw versus AEW Dynomite, the ratings are not even close. WWE's Smackdown versus AEW's Collision, the ratings are even farther then the flag ship shows. WWE's NXT versus AEW's Rampage, Rampage does exist but the ratings like the show do not matter. Crititcs however love compairing WWE's development company NXT to AEW's Dynomite because it is the only way AEW can even come close to beating a part of WWE. Reality AEW has never gone against WWE like WCW and TNA have done. AEW just lacks the balls.
