Peter Windsor: Verstappen Was Being a Racing Driver!

  • In this interview with @peterwindsor we discuss the Austrian GP and whether Max Verstappen was to blame for the incident with Lando Norris, was the movement in the braking zone at the Austrian Grand Prix dangerous, should Lando Norris have moved left in turn 3 like Verstappen had done in 2023 when overtaking Carlos Sainz? Is there a risk of F1 becoming too sanitised if the FIA penalise aggressive defensive driving? Were the FIA to blame for penalising Verstappen in real time and should they have issued Lando's 5 second penalty sooner and would it have changed the complexion of the Austrian Grand Prix if Red Bull and Max Verstappen had know about the penalty? And what will happen at Ferrari if Lewis Hamilton under performs expectations?

Mr Windsor need to check the rules book from time to time:)).
The master of commentary looks not to be aware of the simple fact that when a driver breaks (with the steering wheel straight) all the weight goes on the front tires and any move of the steering wheel will lead to locking a tire.
I see only subjective opinions from a person who I was expecting to be objective.

It is shocking how much hate max gets for being an aggressive and entertaining racer… the British bias reinforced by the media and broadcasters is absolutely ridiculous and this narrative will be poison in silverstone. I’ve seen so many drivers make on the edge moves and the reaction is so different, Fernando Alonso is a prime example and there are very recent situations you could refer back to. Max is a generational talent and he fights hard, that’s why every wheel to wheel battle he’s involved in is so exciting. He has been near perfect since the beginning of 2021 (regardless of your views of how that season ended he won more races than Lewis that season and Lewis had 6 years of momentum under his belt) and we have all been crying out for another titanic battle to replicate 2021, at the first sight of a championship battle the world is in outrage and we turn straight to hate. Do we want to be entertained or not guys! Should max just pull over next time and let him past?!

I agree. If you look at Piastri's onboard on the lap that Lando and Max collided, he was into a battle with Sainz. Piastri dove to inside of Sainz for turn 3, but left him space on the outside on the exit. Sainz was ahead on the drive towards turn 4 and did a couple of moves to block Piastri there that were worse than what Max did, but I don't hear anyone about that. Piastri himself also didn't even complain, but just focused on his line into turn 4 and got ahead through 5 and 6. No whining, no complaining and no controversy.. just racing. There's so many examples of situations like that all the way up and down the grid every race, but people and especially the media are just hyper-focusing on that one thing they can create a drama bandwagon about for everyone to jump on so they can sell their content.

Except Peter got the facts wrong starting 5s into this video. Lando didn’t hit Max’s LR with his RF, it was LR to RR.
AKA Lando was fully alongside when the contact happened. Since one driver wasn’t steering (relative to the track AND steering input on the car) and the other was… Super easy to see who was at fault.
Never mind that Max continued to watch his mirror and move his car to block for the rest of this corner, the following straight, and the next corner.

Also, as Peter basically said in the Video, there was a time in F1 when blocking and and similar defensive manouvers were the norm, and i can tell you, it was a whole lot more entertaining than what we have now where the large majority of the drivers simply trust on DRS to do the job for them. Yes DRS creates a whole lot more overtakes. But 90% of the time there's no skill involved anymore. Just press a button and you will pass. Often enough they have already passed the opponent even before the next braking zone starts. What is entertaining about this?

as much as i agree, max being a racing driver is great but when he shows 2016 max with some choice illegal moves which are there for the safety of the drivers he cant complain when he gets the reprocussion for breaking those rules. max was the reason the moving under breaking rule was introduced. the instance that comes to mind is 2016 kimi vs max in belgium. please have a look and youll see the similarities with how he raced then and how he raced against lando in austria. hes taken a step back and races like hes 17 again. for split second you can see that he will do anything for the in and the mentality of "if i cant win neither can you" is ridiculous and dangerous

All he could say was why Max didn't let him pass on the basis of them being friends. "You want it? I'm not giving you the position! You have to come and take it if you're a racer!" Simple as that

@dariussatius1621 yes I agree and lando had not had the experience of driving in the front of the field to attack in a more suitable way and I apreciate your opinion however I believe that maxs defence was to claim the inside line, then move toward the outside under breaking, and as a second defensive move, I'm not too sure how lando would have gotten arround that when he dosnt have the space. I understand your point that max can't just let him through and I agree, but their are rules in place for the safety of the drivers and max has shown that he is skilled enough to defend without breaking those rules so I can understand landos frustrations

His penalty was created just for Vercrashens style of driving after 21'. Rules should be applied fairly. Clearly max moved left before right to run him wide before the corner. DRS has nothing to do with it as only an idiot will open his DRS before such a tight corrner so speed differential in breaking for a corner is nonsense.

There’s a lot of British RUclips commentators like Cameron who don’t know much about Formula One, but are incredibly biased as Cameron is showing now and pretty much in all of his videos. But when the big presenters on F1 official payroll and main media do It, it really harms the sport. Nobody takes commentators like Cameron seriously, but I’m really glad to see Peter give his fair opinion. I personally think it was mostly a racing incident when they collided with a fraction of the blame more to be placed on Max. This is a very minor collision and misjudgment by Max. This was not dirty driving and this is not like when Lewis put Max into the wall at Silverstone, 2021. That was serious dangerous driving by Lewis. There was no uproar on main f1 media about Lewis being dirty when he did that. British bias is a joke and makes it harder to take f1 more seriously.

The problem is that F1 cars are so reliant on aerodynamics and clean air, you need something to compensate for the time lost in corners which is not recovered by a tow. Otherwise you can't ever overtake unless your car is ridiculously much faster (like 2-3s+ a lap), just look at the pre-DRS era. Because no, outside of a single highlight per season, there was absolutely no racing past T1 back then, and F1 was almost purely an engineering sport.

Since then it’s just been a cheat button for the car behind, which results in what we have now. the fastest cars steaming to the front, unimpeded, unchallenged and quite frankly, unworthy of their win. Indycar’s push to pass has proven to be far superior in the racing it creates. This needs to be the biggest talking point in F1 at the moment and it just isn’t.

i keep watching the replay from both onboards, and ill be the first to say max is a aggressive racer, and thats fine, but i cant come to any other conclusion that Lando had far to much overspeed approaching the corner , there was no way he would of made a undercut, and basically drove into max, max did not move to the left, Lando drove into him, he knew he had to much speed and either assumed that max would turn in earlier or he simply miscalculated the space he had and was frustrated already, after all he was seriously ranting about max moving under breaking, whilst he actually was not! I would love to blame max for the incident, but i dont see how.. is it me or are people just biased?? im going crazy with the amount of BS that is being spewed in max's direction, one day they praise him like he is a god, the next they are basically trying to lynch him?? and im not talking about the fans, that they do it i can understand, but commentators on tv!? this is sick stuff! People are acting like he punted him off the track. Hes had great battles over recent years but people are using this to make out he "hasn't changed" which is silly.
Honestly the constant picking apart of every aggressive move he makes just brings the sport down for me. Don't people want to see action??

For everyone who is complaining about Max. Ask yourself if you think Senna was as good as everyone claims he was then. The man who made the game if chicken an art in F1. The man everyone considers to be the best F1 driver to ever geace the sport. The man who punted more people off the road than almost anyone else on his path to 3 championships.

It looked to me like Lando was trying tovpass Max like they were on the last lap. Every lap for like, 10 or 15 laps, instead of setting up a good pass, he looked very desperate. It didn't come off looking like Lando did well. It came off like I do when I play gran turismo in a car thats faster than all the others. Just throw your car into the corner and get the pass done no matter what since I built the car to be faster than all the others. Poor showing.

I agree, and have been saying something similar in other comment streams. IMO Lando, up to now, has demonstrated that he doesn't have the fortitude or mental toughness to be Champion. I thought he looked reckless and desperate dive bombing and exceeding track limits to the point of getting penalized at a critical time in the race.

    • @MichaelEilers
      @MichaelEilers 4 дня назад

@@AmericasChoicehe was trying to pass while he still had tire advantage. I think it was a desperate move, and Lewis can give Lando a nice tip about trying to pass Max on the outside, but for Lando it effectively was the last lap because his tires were losing the “new” advantage

Lando made RECKLESS lunges and pushed Max off. Went off himself another time (incurring a penalty for 4th time)

I agree 100% of Peter, that it’s not max fault , it’s his style of driving , & why Lando don’t go at the right side to overtake , like max did w/ Carlos Sainz before so they don’t have a collision it’s because Lando
Is upset that he don’t win in sprint , like Russel in the interview !!

Lando on the inside went off & his engineer agreed Max forcing him off, that's the ridiculousness we're dealing with here. Lando was just too impatient, he was attacking without thinking through & he gave up therefore let the crash happen bcz there's no way he was overtaking Max from where they made contact, essentially ended his race.

DRS is a failed contrived equalizing concept, definitely not old-school slipstreaming. The Red Bull Ring in Austria is a 3-DRS track. Max moved to the left (telemetry on the vehicle will prove this) on turn 3 to block Lando. Max then blocked Lando on the right on a straight section. Max extracted revenge for Lando's start at the Spanish Grand Prix (Lando should have been reprimanded) which ironically benefited Mercedes, George Russell. Russell is the beneficiary of the feud between Max and Lando
