    Interesting that David Croft is questioning whether the 10 second penalty is sufficient seeing as Lando retired and scored no points whilst Max finished 5th and scored a few points….
    Interesting that same David Croft was too busy celebrating Lewis’ win at Silverstone in 2021 when Lewis punted Max into the tyre barrier at 51g, only got same 10 second penalty and went on to win the race…👀

      Regulations towards driving standards have changed drastically since 21, also gotta take into consideration max in Austria was multiple offences that would eventually end in contact, lewis in 21 was a single offence with understeer but was definitely his fault (this is coming from a person who isn't a fan of both of them)

    If Norris had approached the outside like Verstappen did overtaking Sainz in 2023 (where Sainz was in a similar position, less than a car's width from the white line) then he could have made the cut back on a tighter line. But he didn't do that because he was frustrated that he'd failed to get the position while he had the tyre advantage. Norris also needed to abuse track limits to even get close enough to pass, so I don't have any sympathy for him. Sainz or Leclerc would have handled that situation better. Crofty reads out the applicable rule. Then defines "irratic driving" as moving twice. Then accused Max to have moved twice.. which Max didn't do, in none of the occasions during the race. Max did move once in reaction to Lando, which is allowed (and basic racing imo). This is not Indycar.
    Note also that Lando would not have been penalised for track limits in the crash incident if he would have moved a bit more to the left. That would have prevented the damage to both cars and Lando would have passed Max easily when then switching to the inside line. Lando was entitled to a full cars width (hence the penalty for Max), but it wasn't smart racing. He would have had 5 seconds in hand and could have even stayed behind Max.
    Max did put Lando on the grass after the crash, which could be in retribution, but could also be caused by the damage on the rear left. Only Max knows.

    He was well aware of this and became even more desperate rather than taking proactive action by driving accordingly.
    So the fact is that at that point Lando was 5 seconds behind when he attempted to pass.

    My take on the whole thing. It was exciting racing. We need more of this and less interference from the stewards, and scrap the silly rules. Before the point of contact one thing was true: Lando was about to get a 5 second penalty for track limits, so he knew that, so why for the love of motor racing did he think putting his car up the side of Max was going to end well. At best Max would come over left and then turn right to take the racing line, thus squeezing Lando. Lando would have to take to the side of the track to avoid contact, thus going off track, thus getting another track limit penalty. Lando knew that, so decided to not move and CONTACT! That was always going to happen.

    It wasn’t clever racing from either of them. They had about ten laps left with Max struggling on tyres with Norris noted for leaving track with a quicker car. And yet, instead of being patient, he ran off track in an attempt to take Verstappen over, and Max lost his cool as well. Both were at fault in that

      Completely agree. Teams didn’t inform their drivers in a timely manner, also because the stewards didn’t do a timely job. Apparently Lando had already violated these track limits four time after receiving an official warning, before the stewards finally penalized him. But just in time for McLaren to do a 5 second stop just before retiring the car.

    • @peteraa4418
      @peteraa4418 3 дня назад +1

      Stewards procrastinating as long as possible to give Norris the 5s penalty for track limits. It took what, 3-5 laps for something that was obviously his 4th strike. Had they just acted in a normal and timely fashion Norris would come over the line first and be on the second step. As for the racing, jinking by Max was ugly, as was Norris' trying to bomb a corner he was never going to make. But thats racing I guess and what happened happened.

    I don’t have a dog in this fight, but can say that I much preferred it when the corner belonged to the person leading. This business of having to leave space on the outside is so counter-intuitive to racing. When I used to do club racing in the days of the dinosaurs, if you are trying to hang it around the outside and could see that there is no space, you simply backed off the throttle…. No harm, no foul. You would pressurize the guy in front and, if he made a mistake, you would pounce. If the leader did not make a mistake under pressure, then he wins the race. Things were much simpler then. As Peter Windsor said, DRS has expounded the problems in the braking zone.
