  • In this episode of The Shakedown F1 podcast we argue about Max Verstappen and Lando Norris at the Austrian Gp and the British GP. Has Max Verstappen really grown? And who was to blame for the incident? Should the FIA take blame as well in this? Should Lando have made better use of all his advantages during the race. We preview the British Grand Prix and talk all F1 News and F1 Updates.

All the other drivers around him made many more mistakes than Max during the same period. How many times did Lewis, Sainz and George have to appolologize during the same time for example? I will admit that I am a Max fan - but when I watched what happened including the onboards it is just not that clear cut at all. Of course Max played a part but there was enough room for Lando to avoid the contact without going completely off the road. I'm with Mr. Windsor on this - hard racing - the ridiculousness of this dumbass rule of not moving in the braking zone (which the FIA already modified the rule from you cannot steer at all to you cannot steer erratically in the braking zone)...... Peter Windsor said it all - it's ridiculous to say it's completely Max's fault for Lando to hit Max's rear left quarter with his front right part of the car.... Give me a break!!! Verstappen fan or Norris fan you need to love F1 more and be honest and objective.
Max was predominantly responsible "for causing the collision" hence the penalty. Max was fighting hard but at least twice he moved late and Norris almost hit the back of him on one occasion. Norris divebombed and exceeded the track limits but gave the place back with zero dirty games like Max in Jeddah 2021. Then Lando made the pass on the inside and stayed within track limits but Max got on the throttle before making the corner and overtook Norris off the track and did not give the place back. After that the crash happened when Norris switched to try on the outside. Immediately after the crash Max veered into Lando and tried to put him in the wall on the run to turn 4. That was dangerous with both cars damaged and it's Max Verstappen who was reckless for no reason. The track limit violations before the battle probably helped Norris catch Verstappen so the penalty is well deserved even if you don't count the incident. However Max Verstappen deserved a penalty for overtaking off track and driving erratically (moving under braking) in addition to the one he got for causing a collision.
Alonso got 20 seconds for Australia when he had no contact with George Russell!!

Let's focus on Lando... Does Lando defend his space or racing line when he races? He left so much space for George in Spain to come in from behind, and George took the lead from P4. During the sprint race he tried to overtake Max, but left space for Piastri to come in from behind as well... At turn 3 in Austria, Lando had enough space to his left to avoid contact, but he didn't utilise it... Anyway, I think Lando needs to defend his racing lines better and be more spatially aware. If you go on the offense (in most sports), you are also 'defending' the area / space behind you and next to you... If you don't, then you're just acting unintelligently and opportunistically - you're betting on luck to be on your side. Lando is a professional - he purposefully didn't use the space his left in Austria. He fumbled his own race - he had fresher tyres and pace but he got impatient.

When I street interview 20 people and three give me my desired answer, then only show that, it would seem like the whole world agrees with me. I work in media, and I know the power of manipulation. I know you are a fan of a certain driver and not liking a specific other one, so I guess it is only human, but don't pretend you are impartial.

I have been watching f1 since 1982, and to all who pretend Max invented this or is the worst offender ever, please go and watch back some F1 of the older days, 90s and 2000s and you will be educated. Now the sport is already very safe and policed, please allow them to race hard and prevent it from becoming an actual bore fest. And I have seen a lot of podcasts with Baxty and his bias is undeniable, as said right above here, it is what you mention, and purposefully not mention that proved that. And Sky does exactly the same. That smug smile of Anthony Davidson after he 'proves' how it was Max's fault, it is clearly material shot under a certain angle that makes it look that way. We still haven't seen proof with telemetry showing when steering under breaking happened or that Max steered left. Let's also not forget Max managed to keep it on track when pushed on the grass last time, brilliant save, but now that the outcome is different we're suddenly all p00ping in our di4pers. What are we critical about the style or the outcome? Surely if it is the style then Lando is even more guilty in the last few races.

Theres the idiotic british bias present in every sport. Max made many overtakes in the last two years. Fought against Leclrec at the start of 22. Fought against and overtook Hamilton in COTA 22. Defended against Sainz in Canada 22. 23 was basically his year with minimal fights. Still, had a small yet good battle with Sainz in Monza 23 where he actually waited for the overtake for aorund 10 15 laps rather than taking a risky maneuver. Another good overtake last year at the same turn against Sainz. In the last 3 seasons including this one, only Hamilton in Brazil 22 (didn't get much criticism due to the fight with Checo), his move at Vegas, and now this incident come to mind. But yeah, salty fans coming out of their shell still pissed off over 21.

The track limit violations before the battle probably helped Norris catch Verstappen so the penalty is well deserved even if you don't count Norris going off during the incident. However Max Verstappen deserved a penalty for overtaking off track and driving erratically (moving under braking) in addition to the one he got for causing a collision.

It's okay though because I know team LH barely ever get a chance to criticize Max about anything because he is Flawless race after race so if wacksty can have 1 race out of 50 to finally have something to criticize him for then go right ahead. I know you have been foaming at the mouth just waiting for this podcast 😂 us Max fans have been spoiled because we get to criticize Lewis at least 8 or 9 out of the year sometimes maybe even more. Just want to point out that Lando has also sent dive bomb after dive bomb pushing Max off, making him back out or run wide off track to avoid a crash. They would have crashed way before they actually did, so I think that criticizing Max for drifting left a couple of centimeters and unintentionally making contact with Lando which came with overly dramatic consequences compared to what the incident actually was is a little much. Not saying Max is innocent but he has definitely not done anything as outrageous as you are making it out to be. Let's not forget Silverstone 2021 where Hamilton desperately wet wide at copse to push Max off track and ended up crashing him out of the race and into the hospital and then ended up getting a 10-second penalty which then penalize him at all and he was rewarded with a race win for taking max out of the race

It is past time for the FIA to evaluate the current rule book. Delete duplicitous rules, clarify murky rules and make rules to take control of conduct of drivers and races. Institute a system of timeliness of enforcement during the race to avoid enforcement coming too far after the fact to be effective. The connection between race control and the stewards needs to be streamlined if not combined to speed rulings of infractions. I believe the technology made available to the necessary officials is more than adequate. Attention should placed on driver aggressive behavior displayed anytime during a race weekend, including pit row, practice sessions, qualifying, sprints and actual races.

Max has done a lot of flawless hard racing with many drivers in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Last year mainly when starting from the mid of the grid. This is first time he has put it just, but only just, over the limit and because it is Norris, the heavens are on fire. Look at the bigger picture please.

Crashes are inevitable in F1.. drama, battle, rivalries, crashes, people watch this sport for this, can't deny human nature.
The cars and their protections will and must ensure the safety of the drivers, no matter the speed or G force.
If Lando recieved his track limit penalty on the same lap he accumulated it, Max would've probably let him pass and slip streamed + DRS'ed him to the end.
If both of them had no puncture or damage, the race would've carried on and probably a later crash or Max would've won it.
But all of this is conjecture and doesn't matter now.
The FIA should've been proactive with the rules and penalties, or ditch the rules and let them race to the best of their abilities and beyond.
    Great video and insights Cameron.

So when max has to take evasive actions in Spain to not crash. Its all fair racing. But when Lando does not take evasive action in Austria its all max fault and he is still the same as 2021 😂 and by the way. Lando destroyed his tire because he drove back to the pit faster then verstappen. He could have still scored points. Lando DNF was his own fault 😂

Cameron, always love your conversations with Mr. Peter Windsor, but your guests here today seem to find it more important to stir hate over an unfortunate incident than have a conversation. If your guest has been waiting for 2 year for VER to make a mistake to unload this hate then what is the conversation for if not to add gas to the flame?
Just in the Austrian Sprit race pundits, journalists, and fans alike praised VER for his racing. The GPs incident, while VER was wrong, has turned into an excuse to hate as stated by your guest in the black shirt. Disappointed with todays podcast, unfortunately.

Actually a side by side cockpit view was released by the FIA on tictock and it proves Max didn't turn left into the turn, he was looking at the apex when Lando hit him. Lando did over steer into Max due the excess speed that would have sent him off track. Max had to turn left after Lando hit him to account for loss of traction and then due to a missing tyre continued to fight for traction.

Max referred as one of the best in one lap and the fastest car in consistant succession. However the guy has never shown respect for the rules going back to when Ocon beat em as a teen as a gp 2 runner up. Is either you let him pass or he will crash into you. Which sucks because yes ppl want to see you win, but the back and forth is really where the magic is at. Fernando Alonso vs M Schumacher 2006/2007 will go down as the greatest sportsmanship battle between two top drivers. God I remember just pure back and forth barely touching each other allowing space and slip streaming each other until the end. Max ain't giving you non of that and everyone knows it including drivers. Calling it spades of spades 🤷🏾‍♂️.

Does this rule of the FIA sporting regulations allow moving under braking or not?
33.4 At no time may a car be driven unnecessarily slowly, erratically or in a manner which could be
deemed potentially dangerous to other drivers or any other person.
I think this rule is too open for interpretation. The first defensive move of Verstappen to Norris could be seen as putting Norris in danger of crashing into him but since Norris was able to avoid contact , is it then dangerous?
Another move under braking from Verstappen when Norris was on the inside was not dangerous to Norris , it only made it more difficult for Norris to make the corner ( which he didn't make).
I have watched both Peter Windsor and also the analysis of Jolyon Palmer. The squeeze move. Also there with above FIA rule the first move does not seem dangerous to me and then the trajectory of Verstappen is then a straight line before Norris comes along on the outside. From Verstappen's point of view there is enough space for Norris ( from previous years you can see others, including Max go more to the left there on the outside of another car ). But from Norris point of view: I am not obliged to move as much possible to the left. If Verstappen made a steering move to the left when Norris was along side, it is then clear cut Verstappen at fault. But he didn't.
Where Verstappen should have gotten a penalty for sure to me is on lap 63 when Norris passed him. In the video of Palmer you can clearly see Norris being clearly ahead at the apex of the turn, keeps the car on track during his move and you see Verstappen accelerate to get alongside , go off track and pass Norris. If there was gravel on the outside of that turn Verstappen would not have been able to do that. So he gained a position there off track.
All talks of Red Bull and Verstappen should have let Norris pass and just stay within 5 seconds because that penalty for sure was going to be given , I disagree with. As long as the penalty is not given , you cannot count on it. And since it took very long between from being noted to actually award the penalty to me is only more reason not to count on it. It should not have taken 5 laps to give that penalty.

Sorry my humble comment here....but watching f1 for 40 years now ....totally landos own fault . Impatience immaturity and frustration . No clear evidence of moving under braking and certainly no erratic movement of max verstappen . He had to get his apex right . Amd look on his mirror for another over the top dive from ando norris . Lando easy could jave avoided this that track limits would not be applied of he did to avoid contact . Simples ....a bit of tire contact that aas all ....unfortunately they both got puncture .
