  • In this interview with @peterwindsor if Lando Norris lost the Spanish Grand Prix or did Max Verstappen win it? What does Verstappen do that makes him different from Lando Norris and have McLaren finally closed the gap on Red Bull? Is there in fighting at Ferrari between Carlos Sainz jr. and Charle Leclerc and why has Charles been so emotional and why did he crash into Lando Norris? Was Carlos Sainz right, does Charles Leclerc always have something to complain about after the race and should the FIA follow their own rules? Peter Windsor talks about Mercedes' technical arrogance and their complacency and why did they ignore Peter Wright's advice. What should we expect from Red Bull at the Austrian Grand Prix and why Peter Windsor didn't think Lewis Hamilton's drive was that great!

He's not in Verstappen's corner. He plainly states that Norris could and should have won. But Norris and Russell should both learn to race an entire race without mistakes. Oooh, Norris came very close in the last laps. Yes, because Verstappen knows winning by 2 seconds is enough. So he manages his tires and avoids risks. But he probably could have pinched a couple of seconds here or there.

@@ThmsDouglas It’s hard to be an F1 fan and not be a Max fan. He is the driver’s driver. I was a Lewis fan all the way until Helmut starting hyping up Max as a teenager and I instantly jumped on the Max wagon before he’d even stepped into an F1 car. And now, this is the feeling we get for backing the right horse from day one. I find it hilarious that people haven’t been enjoying F1. I got to enjoy Hamilton’s dominance, Max’s rise, now Max’s dominance. And all you had to do was back the right horses, but what do I know? I’ve only watching religiously since 94.

Newey, whist its Wache who is the teamlead. Fun part is that RB is having a problems with the locking of the suspension. Newey has spent most of his research time on the suspension. In fact he was one of the only people to work on the suspension at Red Bull... he prevented the porpoising and other issues that most teams had at the beginning of this new era. That area he worked on seems to be exactly the problem they are having right now... suspension locking over the curbs!
If Newey did such a great job why is Perez 22 seconds behind? Its Max, so far the Newey discussion.

The spectacle with F1 is seeing how the top teams develop and design things within the same rules so amazingly that they dominate, then you watch the other teams catch up and innovate even better ideas. 70% would be the fourth most dominant season in F1 history by win rate, Hamilton did 64% in 2020 for reference. To do that in a car that isn't performing far clear of the rest is obscene.

Something I don't get about Peter is that he is so knowledgeable but will ignore obvious stuff
    1) Lewis had Russell best on race pace
    2) Russell again didn't manage his tyers, so he was forced to take the hards.
So it's not like George drove soo amazingly and was unlucky with strategy...his driving dictated the less optimal strategy.
Yes, he had a good start, but beyond that Lewis was better, as he usually is.

He said that during one of his tests, he demonstrated this by telling his engineers to remove the dampers, then he went out and did a lap that was only about a second slower than normal. But I guess when the grid is so competitive, every fraction of a tenth matters.

    • @FrancisFjordCupola

You're crazy. Why should Red Bull want Sainz? He's okay. But Red Bull have plenty of others who are. The car is incredibly difficult to drive; next to no margin of error. Sergio attempts to compensate and outcompetes himself and only makes things worse. That's what happens to drivers who drive alongside Max. The first one you need to beat is your teammate. Max just crushes all hope. Sainz and Ricciardo left because they couldn't cope. Gasly and Albon cracked under pressure. Perez puts in enough and has a big enough fanbase with plenty of sponsors and doesn't cause a lot of commotion. Put a Norris, Russell, Leclerc or even a Hamilton besides Max and they will suffer the same fate.

They have poached Mercedes engineers from their engine department, signed key engineers from Japan who knew the ins and outs of that Honda power unit and I believe Honda has even sold some of the IP to Redbull. That and they’ve been investing millions and receiving 100s of millions in sponsors over the last few years that they’re bolstering up the factory.

I feel we complain about McLaren and Mercedes too much, it is not them making insane mistakes it is rather Max and Red Bull getting things extremely right consistently to a point we might have not seen in the past. The Red Bull is reliable, their pit stops and strategy are reliable and Max can drive that car and that strategy. How to beat that: be perfect too. Let’s face it, Mansell, Schuhmacher, Damon Hill or Lewis all were brilliant but had mistakes from them on their team much more regular than in the modern era (young Lewis, not 2021 Lewis ;))

I think it's ok for Lewis to have to "waste" a few years of his career fighting for non wins(still in the top 10 though). Given he came into F1 in a winning car he "deserves" some less than easy years compared to the rest of the drivers. I mean has anyone else on the grid immediately been gifted a chance of winning the championship in their first year? Look at George wasting away at the back in the Williams his first few years because Merc didn't want to give Hamilton a competitive teammate. Norris had to be a reserve driver, then finished 11,9,6,7,6 in his first years. Leclerc did 13,4,8,7,2,5. Even Alonso started off with a 23rd, reserve driver, 6, and a 4th before he won his first 2 championships, then immediately back down to 5th, 9th etc.
I don't feel sorry for him, he's still had more years than any other driver in a competitive car, and even when it can't win its still comfortably in the top 10. That's a pretty good record when you look at all the other drivers careers and what they had to put up with

We only view Perez as a bad driver because we assume the RB20 is a great car and Max keeps winning races. Mercedes ended last year 2nd in the constructor championship with Ferrari close 3rd. Red Bull winning 21 of 22 races was milestones ahead. If I now look at Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren they are relative to each other in the same spot basically trading who end up second. Albon revealed last year in an interview that the Red Bulls are very edgy cars that are difficult to control. We even saw a drift from Max in Spain. It looks more like Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren have taken a step forward, but Red Bull two steps backwards, or do we really believe that three different teams have found the miracle to fight the Red Bulls?
So, what if we assume Perez drive in Spain was the best of his career and the RB20 is a decent car at best, the results in China, Miami, Italy, Canada and Spain make much more sense. It would also explain why Red Bull privately booked a full track day at Imola to rest with the RB19 is 'similar' conditions if the RB20 is bad, or only feels bad because other teams are closer. They can't test with the RB20, because that time is heavily regulated by the FIA. But there are no rules what you can do with cars from previous seasons. First the have a full race weekend with the RB20 (fp1, fp2, fp3, Q and main race) with provides them with a torrent of data and a few days later had Max drive a full day with the RB19 on that track with only a few changed variables beside the car which is mainly the weather. Compiling and analyzing that data will probably take a few weeks and than they have to translate that into tweaks for the RB20.
Max is a exceptional driver that has only one job and he does it very well. Not only is he the ranking world champion, he is also one of the best virtual drivers. I bet that Max per year makes at least three times as many hours racing than the rest of the grid. That is where his consistency is coming from. You won't win endurance races if you do not have a metronomic driving style. I also see a big difference with Lewis, when Lewis got his title, he would also relax a bit and this was traditional also the time (end of season) where Red Bull would pickup a few wins. Max was always close to Lewis and Bottas and was able to capitalize if one of the made a mistake. In 2022 I didn't saw that in Leclerc, I mean in France 2022 he was in the lead when he took himself out and Leclerc and Ferrari made more errors during the first races of 2022. Another thing that Max is very good in, is finding loopholes in regulations. During a safety car 'restart' you are not allowed to overtake before start/finish. But nowhere was (in 2021) specified how far behind of the car in front you needed to be, so he almost drive parallel to Lewis. Look at all the Verstappen rules the FIA has added since 2015...
