  • Suicide brings crushing grief to thousands of families every year, including Christian families. When a Christian takes their own life, loved ones often wrestle with doubt about the deceased individual's eternal destiny, compounding the sense of loss and grief.
In this episode, Dr. David K. Bernard addresses suicide from both a theological and a pastoral perspective. Dr. Bernard examines what the Bible says about the value of human life while offering comfort to those who have lost someone they love to suicide.
If you are concerned about suicide and don’t know what to do, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). They have trained counselors available 24/7 to speak with either you or your loved one. You can learn more about preventing suicide at nami.org/Find-Support/Family-Members-and-Caregivers/Preventing-Suicide.
For additional information on the topic of suicide from an Apostolic perspective, see the quick-reference guide titled “Dealing with Suicidal Behavior,” available at UPCIFamily.com.
You can listen to the audio version of this episode on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, and other podcast platforms.

Some years ago for a period of time I was severely depressed. As a Pentecostal we’re not to feel that way so I was too embarrassed to speak with anyone about it. I felt that I was absolutely no good/useless. One night in church the thought came to me “you’re no good for your family, the church nor anyone. You may as well kill yourself.” I immediately recognized that as a spirit, was prayed for and the severe oppression left. Sometimes we may think these thoughts are “just me” when in fact it could be a spirit and give into that spirit not realizing what’s happening.

You're right. Those were not your thoughts. That was a demon. The demons keep telling me that I'm gonna have to kill myself because things won't change. It happens periodically when I can't take it anymore, but I know where it's coming from and always turn to Jesus and ask Him not to ever let me kill myself. He is faithful and true!

I too had major depression shortly after being saved. I doubted my Christianity for having it. But I learned many people in the bible suffered from depression. Job for one ad Elisha. I had to go to a hospital voluntarily. I. Could leave any time I wanted to. When my medication finally kicked in I felt like a lightbulb came on in my head! Where there was only darkness before! Thank God he gave mankind the knowledge to make that medication! A whole new life.

After a year. The medication is not habit forming nor does it make you feel high. A normal person could take it and feel nothing. It adjusts the chemical in your brain that you are short of.

I have three ruptured discs in my low back since 2015. I'm in pain constantly, all the doctors do is give me pain pills, that do little. Being out of work gave me the time to get back into the Bible. I have read and studied it several times and still do. If not for getting back in the Word, I don't know what I would have ended up doing.
Now my wife has cancer in her head and lungs. She just started radiation.
Please keep us in your prayers. Me, I've been praying for the rapture for a while now. Maranatha.

For those 2 days I spent them with him talking to him and crying. The doctors say he had no brain activity but I would like to believe that during those 2 days he was able to be forgiven for what he had done. Thank you for this video. It’s something I struggle with daily even 5 plus years later. It’s tested my faith but I’m giving my life back to our Lord. I believe he is a merciful God. ❤️

I read a brain study that examined those who were diagnosed as brain dead. The study showed that at least half were not dead at all but unable to respond yet their brain activity responded to those who were loved ones. This study was at least 10 years old so the research likely is out there somewhere showing that Brain Death is not Accurate at all. The researchers suggested that loved ones and others need to speak to the brain dead because they are not incapable of hearing and understanding.

I lost a 15 year old neice to suicide in 2015. I went on a LONG journey to find the truth. IF your husband believed that Jesus died for his sins, that he was buried, and he rose again on the 3rd day according to scriptures, then he is saved, he may lose crowns, he may lose rewards, but he is saved, forever!!!! Jesus said, it is FINISHED!!! ALL sins were paid at the cross.

Matt 12:31 Jesus says “all manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.”
Suicide is not unforgivable. It is very much not advised as it is a sin, but it is not an unforgivable sin. Furthermore, I’ve never met anyone who is in their right mind that commits suicide. I would say that anyone willing to take their own life is dealing with things that we know nothing about, and we shouldn’t be the one to judge that person who may have been dealing with things we didn’t understand. Also I’ve heard a lot of people in my life quote the Bible saying “no sin will enter in” but that isn’t speaking of a person who commits a sin and immediately dies going to hell. For example, if a person lives their entire life living a godly life and witnessing and serving others, and just happens to wake up and everything in their life goes wrong. Maybe they get a call that a loved one has died or their house burned down, and they go to the store and someone spills hot coffee all over them, let’s say that godly person makes a mistake and tells that person off, yells and even cussed. Then as they leave the store they pull out in traffic, get hit by a bus and die. Does that mean they’re on their way to hell because they didn’t ask forgiveness before they died? No. The Bible says no sin will enter in because we will no longer have a body of flesh, but put on a body of immortality. We’ll shed this sinful body and that heavenly body will be what enters into heaven.
So the person that commits suicide, God will judge that person. He will judge them fairly and righteously. But that doesn’t mean they will go to hell for that sin.

Such a touchy subject. I know a couple people who have committed it and I myself have attempted as well. I do know that more often than not, you’re in extreme pain and you do call and cry out to the Lord in your pain. I always say, in the end, when you’re drawing your last breath, we do not know the thoughts of the person. We don’t know if they have conversations with God in those moments and we don’t know where they go in the end bc we are not God. But dependence on God will grant us the strength to overcome anything.

Without the meds I lose the ability to walk. Something people take for granted. I get bedridden which is horrible because my mom has alzheimers and needs help. I think God just take me I can't suffer like this anymore. Everyone is so focused on people overdosing that they forget the people that will die without the medicines.

There is no repentance after death. The video message above is for people who lost their love ones due to suicide to bring hope through God's mercy. This is not to give ease to people on planning to suicide with relief. So stop, suicide, its a sin and that's not the only sin if we are tempted with it.

Before I say this,I want to make it very clear that I am well aware that suicide is wrong and it is a sin and by no means am I excusing or saying this as if suicide is something to take lightly because it is not. While I've never lost anybody close to me to suicide I have witnessed a close friend dealing with the suicide of his little sister, who sadly and without warning had hanged herself at the very tender age of 19,and whom he loved and adored very much and the grief that he so obviously carried from such tragedy was so heartbreaking to see, along with the rest of his family. Anyhow I want to say that while it is true that suicide is a sin,I like to think anyway that the act alone will not send you to hell. If a person goes to hell after they kill themselves it's only because they didn't know Jesus in the first place. Sometimes suicide is brought on by a severe mental illness and a horrible depression that totally clouds the mind and messes with a person's mental state. Therefore their mind gets so overwhelmed and it feels so hopeless and the emotional and mental anguish gets too overwhelming and they can't bear it anymore,so they do the only thing they know to do to escape the pain. And in all reality people, even suicidal people don't really want to die but they just feel it's the only option to escape their pain. But,if that person has truly turned to Christ and they do know him, none of what goes on with him or her mentally has anything to do with what's in their heart. Their hearts can be regenerated and totally right with God but their mind can be a totally different story. And,to say that you go to hell for committing suicide is saying that you go to hell for an act. The Bible makes it clear that the only thing that condemns you is not believing in Jesus and rejecting him as your Lord and savior. Choosing to commit suicide is not necessarily turning on Jesus. It's just more or less an impulsive move, even if it is premeditated and thought of ahead of time, with a person's mental illness it's still like an impulse that drags on for a long period. Christ's work on the cross paid for ALL sin, suicide included. He payed for everyone's sins on the cross so therefore nobody goes to hell for the sins they committed if it has already been paid for. A person's eternal destiny rests solely on their decision to either accept or reject the atoning work that Christ did on the cross for them and if they did the former then there is nothing they can do short of committing apostasy or blaspheming the Holy Spirit, which is what is the unforgivable sin,to lose their salvation. Again having said this I will say again that by no means am I trying to lighten the matter of suicide or denying the seriousness of it and overall sinfulness of it. I'm just saying that God's mercy is not based on an act that a person commits if they have put their trust in his Son,including suicide.

I would tread with EXTREME caution putting a video out there like this brother.. God tells us not to cause another brother or sister to stumble- what if someone out there is struggling with suicidal thoughts, comes across your video, finds justification in it and ends their life? I would not want to be standing before God giving an account, God pulls this video up and says "this video led someone (or many) to take their life because of what you said in it".. thats a very scary to think about..
anyone reading this comment who is struggling with suicidal thoughts- endure the moment! please reach out to someone for help.. regardless of what happens, i can assure you that God does not want you to take your life! that is a lie that satan is whispering in your ear- resist him and he will flee! pray to Jesus that He cast that demon away and free you from these thoughts! life can be so hard at times, but i assure you that God still has a plan for you if you'll allow it to unfold! what a powerful testimony you will have to share when you've overcome these thoughts that you'll be able to share with others going through the same thing!
    STAY Blessed everyone!

But in my experience when I went on the other side God didn't judge me or condemn me the only thing He said " He addressed me by my name and said "You love vanity more than you love me. But I had a full understanding of what I did I knew I was going to hell because I knew I didn't belong with God because of the sin I committed by overdosing on my antidepressant pills.

I know suicide is wrong and it's a sin but why would God not forgive you for committing suicide, when he forgives you for committing any number of sins fornication, adultery, homosexuality, lying, coveting, having a false idol etc.
I believe all sins in God's eyes are equal, and suicide is just another sin so I believe God would forgive a Christian who committed suicide.

This is sad that Bro. Bernard would tip toe around the question. He answered the question within the first minute. "Sin is sin". If you die in your sin, then you will not inherit the Kingdom of God. I understand that he is trying to not offend people but he shouldn't give a false sense of hope either because people constipating suicide might believe that they'll be going to heaven as well.

Suicide is a sin but does not mean a Christian will forfeit heaven. If a Christian commits suicide they will go to heaven. If a unbeliever commits suicide they will go to hell. All this talk about some repentance if they don’t die immediately is somewhat confusing. I really don’t think that happens very often. Whatever. But he makes a good point. Suicide means you don’t believe God will help you in your distress. It’s a lack of faith. And you cannot please God without faith. Heb 11:6. Endure hardship like a good solider. Then you will receive the crown of life.

I don't care how deep into sin you've gone, God will forgive and save you if you'll place your faith in Jesus Christ, because of the blood He shed for your sins (1st John 1:7). If you want to be saved, then it is not too late. If God was willing to forgive a mass-murder like Saul (i.e., the Apostle Paul), then He will forgive you too. If God was willing to forgive an adulterer and murderer like king David, then He will forgive you too. If God was willing to forgive a liar and cheater like Jacob, then He'll forgive you as well. Only you can commit the unpardonable sin, by refusing to come to Jesus Christ to get your sins forgiven (John 5:40). Isaiah 1:18 is abundantly clear--THERE IS NO SIN WHICH CANNOT BE FORGIVEN... "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool."

In the Old Testament, Samson committed suicide. Samson went to Heaven. A born-again believer can commit suicide and still go to Heaven, which Samson proves. When a believer gets saved, all sins past, present and future are forever washed away. It is a sin to commit suicide, but the only sin that can keep a person from going to Heaven is the sin of rejecting Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. That's the only unpardonable sin!

There is only one sin which CANNOT be forgiven--rejecting Jesus Christ as your Savior. In other words, none of your sins can be forgiven apart from the precious blood of Jesus Christ (Hebrews 9:22). God is willing to forgive a person of ANY sin, except the sin of not coming to God the Father through the cross of Jesus Christ. Jesus stated in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." There is no salvation apart from God our Savior.

Unbelievers say that Jesus committed suicide. The kind of self sacrificing love that would sacrifice their life for others or God and is motivated by His indwelling Spirit and does not even need to be forgiven as it is an act of righteousness. Otherwise, suicide is just the result of a long protracted process of sinful thinking. In some rare cases, people kill themselves because of an acute painful experience, but that also is a result of habitually not putting one's faith in the character and heart of God. In many cases if not most, only the Lord knows what really motivated the suicide and where that person's heart was.

There is no heaven or hell, so it's a silly question. It's actually extremely cruel, and rather 'un Christian', to tell someone who is suffering and wants to end their life that they will be tortured for eternity if they kill themselves. Finally, Jesus allowed himself to be killed. That's suicide isn't it?

  • @sharone02

Thou shall not kill. When you commit suicide you kill yourself true or false? You are behaving cowardly when you end your own life. Jésus said in révélation 21:8 " thé cowardly, thé unbelieving, thé vile, thé murderers... Their part will bé in thé lake of fire that burns with sulfur. This is thé second Death.
Except for Samson's Death. He was not a coward here, he died with thé Philistins ( enemies) Christians should be able to overcome difficult times and troubles or persecutions. That is, be it religiously, physically, emotionally, mentally, socially, medically and so on... Jesus experienced a terrible persecution but he endured till the end on the cross. Please don't be decieved the bible is clear about that. Suicide is murder or killing oneself and behaving cowardly. Jesus Says in thé Book of John 15:18-20 " If thé World hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you...
Real christians should be able to endure till the end nomatter what the problem is and place/put their faith in God almighty

We can't make people feel comfortable while committing a sinful act. Never. That's not of God. What we have to remember is. We all have ungodly thoughts at times no matter what it might be. Fornication, adultery, or murdering some one who made you angry or misused you.The list goes on , and on . It's sad to say , but I thoughts are controlled mainly by what's in our hearts. As a man think. So is he .Proverbs 23:7) So we can't excuse sinful behavior to please the love ones who are left behind. We have to tell them the truth. If any man be in Christ he is a new creation behold old things have passed away, behold all things are new. My mindset isn't about me if I am truly in Christ. Iam not thinking about taking my life that I didn't give myself. I know that what ever it is God can forgive me, besides blasphem the Holy Ghost. So we have to tell them that . Taking your life isn't of God and leave it there. To try to tell them is their love one is in heaven. You don't know, because the Bible says. The righteous shall scarcely make it in . Where will the ungodly be? 1 Peter ch 4: 18-19 . So how we answer the question is. Telling people regardless of the suicide. It's not of God and God forbids it. The issue about heaven is not to make you feel better about a love one committing sinful act. That's where we miss the opportunity to minister correctly to the living. Everyone believe it or not isn't going to Heaven.

I lost my 23 year old daughter to suicide in 2011. She was Valedictorian in college, born again, loving, lovely, and loved by all. She developed late onset mental illness. Her uncle had experienced the same type of breakdown and a failed suicide attempt. He said, depression can be very painful. All you can think about is extinguishing the pain, at that moment. I believe that God is merciful and wise. He may deal with each of us based on our unique and individual circumstances. God knows our 💕 hearts.
