Why Would a Loving God Send People to Hell? | Episode 42

  • The Bible clearly paints a picture of God as a loving Creator and Savior who cares for everyone. At the same time, the Bible also is very adamant that there will be a day of judgement in which God banishes unbelievers to a place of everlasting torment. To many, this seems like a contradiction. How can a supposedly loving God punish people for eternity just because they didn't hold the right set of beliefs?
Dr. David K. Bernard addresses this frequently-asked question by reviewing what the Bible actually says about sin, judgment, justice, punishment, and reward.

3 fold witness. Nature, conscience, preachers. Not every human in history was given a Preacher of Jesus Christ. We trust God is fair according to his grace and mercy. I think most Christians know this instinctualy but it's hard to express without running into scripture on the complex subject. This was vary well navigated. It's OK to say we don't know.

Good discussion. I would add this: It would seem that the Bible teaches that on a scale of 0-- 10 for sinfulness, we don't start out at 0 and add sins on until they accumulate so much that we are condemned but it seems we start out at negative 10 in that we are condemned already and it's impossible to be righteous by our own means. That seems to be what John 3 teaches. Thanks.

@@bestyoutubechannelever3206 thank you for your comment. The Bible does says that, "they will be tormented day and night forever and ever." It further states that, "These will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." A careful student of the Bible should review the meaning of these passages in light of the Scriptures. To put it in a different way, anyone who wants to understand what these passages mean should interpret them by other biblical passages that talk about terms such as "Forever and ever" or "everlasting fire", etc. For example, Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed with "eternal fire." Yet, that fire is not still burning even though it is described as "eternal." Another example. The Lord destroyed Edom with a fire that "shall not be quenched night or day, it's smoke shall ascend forever." Yet, you go travel all over the Middle East and you will not see that smoke. You will not find it because this isn't what the meaning of "forever" when it comes to judgement, punishment, tourment, smoke, etc. mean in the Scriptures. I recommend you get my book: "Resurrection vs. Life after death" if you want to understand this biblical teaching. It's available at orion-publishing website. God bless.

Im apostolic and I have studied hell in depth and I have to say that the doctrine of annihilation is absolutely Biblical. If you study scripture in its original languages, satan and unbelievers will be annihilated in the lake of fire... the Bible doesn't teach eternal hell... it says they "will be no more" after being thrown into the lake of fire. It is very clear in Greek and Hebrew and there is no indication that a sinner has an eternal soul or that the lake of fire lasts forever. The English versions mistranslate this subject. I urge you to listen to a Pentecostal preacher named Edward Fudge or read his book called "The Fire That Consumes". It is purely based on the Bible and is the result of decades of study. Be at peace.

It's a place of eternal separation from God. All that is good and perfect comes from God. If you are separated from good you will be in a place where there is nothing good or perfect at all.

  • @mt9567
    @mt9567 2 года назад +5

Thank You! Okay, here's a few additional thoughts on the matter..... The question itself is flawed and assumes facts not in evidence. Perhaps a better question is: Why does God 'allow' people the choice between eternal life (Heaven) and eternal death (Hell)?..... There really is no satisfactory answer for me!.... However, to try and put things in context... God creates things he doesn't like... even things he hates. Why? The obvious answer is because he needs to. It's the only way his creation can function properly. He said so in the first chapter of Genesis. The itemized list of things he created includes things that are described as 'good'. Finally, in Genesis 1:31....."God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.".... The Hebrew word for 'good' is 'tov' which can be translated as 'functional' or 'in harmony' with God. So, everything together functioned properly.... it worked!
WHEN (it wasn't 'if') Adam and Eve chose to consume 'the knowledge of good and evil'... they were no longer 'in harmony' with God and consequently no longer fully functional in God's creation (they became outside of God's will) which causes death. So, back to the original question... Why did God allow this? I would also suggest (as you did) that God didn't want robots or puppets programmed to imitate love. He wanted the real thing. That demands at least one act of disobedience to create 'free will' apart from God's will. Now mankind could freely and truly choose to love God or not. Allowing that single act of disobedience was the only way to create free will. I submit God not only knew Adam and Eve would choose 'knowledge' but also needed them to do so. NOTHING of God is by accident. We all pay a heavy price for our tiny bit of free will. Especially the One God himself as our savior. Was/Is it all worth it?.... God seems to think so....
Regardless, this simple yet harsh truth remains............ Love God..... or..... go to hell.
The first step towards loving God is to acknowledge his existence..... (Yep!...there's that word knowledge again). Thanks for reading! Please feel free to pick apart anything I've said or reject it all together. We all have the God given right to CHOOSE!

“Everlasting destruction” means a destruction that is not overcome, that is final. For example, when my earthly body dies, it experiences everlasting destruction.
So is destruction for the soul: the soul that sinneth, it shall surely die. This is not conscious, unending torment, but literally “death” - the cessation of existence.
Jesus exhorted us to fear not the one who can destroy the body but the one that can DESTROY the body AND SOUL in hell.
What is utterly DESTROYED does not exist. The soul is the seat of consciousness, and if the soul is utterly destroyed then so is consciousness.

No doubt there's others. So, you're not alone in this thinking..... Either way, whether a place of 'forever dying' or something more final, at the very least the process seems extremely unpleasant.

    • @trellusg
      @trellusg 2 года назад

@@mt9567 No, the concept of complete annihilation, of non-existence, is hardly comforting at all -- that's precisely why death is so fearful to so many. Neither am I suggesting that anyone take comfort in thinking they can "get away" with stealing from life and being destructive to the creation -- I think that's highly improbable given what we observe in nature. I suspect that the dying process of a human with a guilty conscience is unpleasant.
As for why it's described as a "place", "place" needn't be literal. When someone asks you, "where [a 'place'] are you at in your grieving process in the loss of your loved one?" they are not asking about a physical location.
Neither does a final "place", even if physical indeed, mean that whomever is put there has consciousness forever to experience having been placed there: after all, if I put the carcass of a rodent in the ground, the fact it's a real place doesn't mean that the decaying, was-rodent is experiencing that place at all.

No. He said that there's no demons in hell with pitchforks poking people. (A refutation of Dantes Inferno and the Hellenistic traditions.) He did not go into depth on this matter. A deeper dive would require a college level expository on Hades Vrs Darkness.

Rev. 19:20 and the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet…these both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
20:1 and I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 20:2 and he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the devil, and satan, and bound him a thousand years, 20:3 and cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
20:7 and when the thousand years are expired, satan shall be loosed out of his prison, …to deceive the nations…
20:10 and the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
20:14 and death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. this is the second death. 20:15 and whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
21:2 and I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 21:3 and I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, behold, the tabernacle of God with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, their God. 21:4 and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. 21:7 he that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. 21:8 but the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolators, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
21:24 and the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. 21:27 and there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither worketh abomination, or a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life. 22:10 …for the time is at hand.
22:11 he that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. 22:12 and, behold, I come quickly; and my reward with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. 22:14 blessed they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. 22:15 for without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolators, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. 22:16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright and morning star. 22:17 and the Spirit and the bride say, Come. and let him that heareth say, Come. and let him that is athirst come. and whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

It IS a contradiction. CONSEQUENCE and full JUSTICE requires payment for transgression, and the only way out is MERCY for THOSE who are MERCIFUL. But there is NO "eternal torment" consequence, that is a demonic invention and has nothing to do with God. There is NO analog in the natural world for this twisted concept invented by evil minds. On the other hand, we see CONSEQUENCE (including painful consequence) all the time in nature. We ALSO see MERCY. The WORD OF GOD is out there to SEE. SEE IT.

The "wrong choice" is the TERMINAL choice -- not one of some make believe torment that conscious souls endure in a pseudo eternal life that is dystopian and horrific. There is ALWAYS a way out as long as there is any LIFE. You cannot call the "lake of fire" a place of conscious eternal death of some sort -- that is oxymoronic and completely irrational besides being genuinely twisted and blaspheming God, who is Good and Just and whose MERCY ENDURES *FOREVER*.

I do not know if your objection to the concept of hell has its root in what I am about to say below...but many who reject Hell's REALITY hold belief in the argument posed to Dr. Bernard.
I propose that those who hold this view of Hell, do so because they are only able to imagine it from natural (carnal) experience. We are spiritual beings in the robes of flesh......who mistakenly imagine eternal things from the PERSPECTIVE of our earthborn experiences.
In Revelation 10:6, the Word declares that:
5¶The angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land raised up his hand to heaven
6And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be TIME NO LONGER:
The unimaginable, incomprehensible thought of ETERNITY, causes some to outright reject the Biblical account of Hell. They fail to associate the transition from flesh + spirit to spirit (alone).
Spiritual Beings have no concept of time......they simply exist.
      They don't age....grow old, etc.
It is not like someone in prison on Earth. Individuals will not be marking time on the wall... with a determined day (either through death or completion of sentence) set for release. The finite nature of terrene imprisonment, offers a sense of relief....even as one agonizes over the loss of freedom.
TIME serves as a limitational construct, by which fallen man can exercise his free will and CHOOSE to love and obey his creator.
Earth/life is the testing ground where we are proven.
Therefore, a Spiritual being in Hell, is NOT synonymous with the earthly experience......because TIME is a non-factor. TIME is the primary Culprit of suffering in earthly imprisonment, due to bodily expiration. We cannot recapture what has been lost.
Yet this same TIME is the source of relief, because it sets limits on suffering.
The word Eternal only serves as a juxtaposition to time. Those in Hell, will simply be.....as a state of existence.

@@tefferro I know that argument you are proposing but it falls apart under examination. Jesus told us to not fear the one who can onto destroy the body but the one who can destroy body AND SOUL in hell.
The body was made to pass; and for this reason we should not fear the death of the body as it is inevitable. But the SOUL is the very seat of consciousness- if the SOUL is DESTROYED, then so is consciousness.
There is no eternal life outside of the very source of BEING (I AM), and consciousness is utterly destroyed without an intact soul, and Jesus tells us that there is one who can destroy the soul.

John 14:8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
John 14:10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

We are saved by God's grace thru faith. If you believe that you r a sinner and will be judged by God, God then sends u the gospel of Jesus Christ. Then u have a clear choice of either believing the good news that Jesus lived a perfect life, died in your place as a sinner to reconcile you to a just and holy God. Jesus then rose again to life. There is nothing you add to that redemption work or take away from it. It is perfect and it finished. Or u can choose to believe that Jesus died for ur sins but then you have to also work towards ur salvation or u have to also keep the law in order to be saved. Or u don't believe any of it and choose another god to save u. The only acceptable choice to God is the first choice. We will not bring any of our works to God on judgement day regarding to be born again. He will share his glory with no one. So oneness or trinity has nothing to do with being born again. There are plenty of people in every denomination that are going to heaven and are going to hell. And people that don't even go to church that are going heaven because they have believed on Jesus Christ to save them and give them eternal life. Once u r born again then u can focus on doctrine and grow in Christ. But the person who is not born again can never truly understand the word of God.
