Do Oneness Pentecostals Teach Salvation by Works? | Episode 41

  • Oneness Pentecostals sometimes are accused of preaching salvation by works, particularly because they insist that full salvation includes water baptism. Often, the person leveling the charge will quote Ephesians 2:8-9, where Paul wrote, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
Dr. David K. Bernard responds to this accusation and examines what the Bible says about the connection between faith and obedience.
For a more in-depth exploration of this topic, see Dr. Bernard's book "The New Birth," available at pentecostalpublishing.com/pro....

I had always been told in the Baptist church what was said about works as Dr. Bernard states, BUT after I was Born Again I was taught by the SAME people that the Church began @ Pentecost, seems simple to me that Peter FILLED with God COMMANDED them and they just submitted, BUT, I also understand that most I have seen use Acts 2:38 as a step by step FORMULA, like those who tell the sinner to say the sinners prayer, I honestly believe we have folks sitting in churches THINKING they were Born Again BY the ACTIONS THEY TOOK following the person giving the instructions. Baptist churches are FULL of Unregenerate "believers" who simply followed a procedure and God didn't orchestrate such, & I'm sure UP has the same, I have met some who followed the UP formula and was coached into "speaking" in tongues but there is obviously NO change in their lives, it happens on BOTH side of the street.

@@REVNUMANEWBERN: You can't be coached into speaking in tongues. That isn't authentic and real. Tongues comes by receiving the genuine Holy Ghost, and if the heart isn't repentant a person will not receive the Spirit of Christ. And Christ can look upon everyone's heart and he knows who's sincere and who isn't. Although I was dedicated to Christ as a baby at UPC here in Augusta, Maine by a Pastor Rick Stoops, I received the Holy Ghost on Oct 3rd, 1999 at an Independent Apostolic Pentecostal Church here in Augusta. Maine under Pastor Jack Willhoite, and he got so excited he almost knocked the Podium over upon me receiving the Holy Ghost, and it's because the message preached that morning tugged at my heart and made me feel extremely remorseful about all the wicked things I had done in life, and that's when Christ infilled me with the Holy Ghost, and I was instantly delivered and set free from multiple drug addictions, cigarettes, alcohol, lying, swearing, stealing and many other sinful things I was bound by, so my experience was genuine, and I consider it an honor to be able to testify to the whole world what Christ did for me. Acts 2:38🕊

There is a big different in performing " works" in an attempt to earn salvation and obeying the commands in Acts 2:38 in order to recieve the free gift of salvation.
The Word " recieve" , in the N.T. original Greek, means " to take hold of. The paranoia to do anything in order to be saved comes from the protestant reformers. In their zeal to escape the " saved by works" of the catholics went too far the other way to faith without obedience.

@Joseph White Salvation is a free gift. Even a free gift must be recieved. The word " recieve" in the new testaments' original Greek means," to take hold of".
Faith in action through obedience is how we recieve salvation. It can't just be head faith and save. And because being saved is also being born again, just as physical birth is the end result of a process so is spiritual rebirth. That process is Acts ch.2:38.

Great teaching ! Many of the accusations that pentecostals teach a works based salvation is based on the false protestant narrative that anything we might do to recieve salvation other than just believing is " works". If that was true then repentance is " works" because it is an act of obedience we must choose to do after we believe to be saved.

“We’re not doing the works. We’re meeting the conditions.” This is why baptismal salvation doesn’t save. It is a command for certain. But obedience to commands do not save. We’re saved the moment we believe. True belief that Christ’s atoning work on the Cross was solely sufficient for our salvation is a rare thing. What rest it provides when by faith we can breath easy knowing our sins are forgiven and Christ’s perfect righteousness has been imputed to us.

  • @Luke-tk9lm
    @Luke-tk9lm 2 месяца назад

If we’re saved by faith plus obedience, then we’re saved by faith plus works. However, the Bible is clear that we are saved by grace through faith and…
    Not of works,
    Apart from works,
and to the one who does not work, but believes.
The UPCI does teach a works-righteousness salvation, but under this system you never know if you’re saved because you never know if you are living a holy enough life to earn your way to heaven.
It’s sad that so much confusion is taught rather than the simplicity which is in Christ.

No, no one can save himself without blood of Jesus Heb. 9;22if people would only understand the meaning of GOSPEL they aould be able to understand why we should experience baptism in water and baptism in spirit.

I find it interesting that Dr. Bernard fails to mention all of the rules/works you have to do for the rest of your life after “salvation”. Following every rule your pastor sets, dressing in certain clothing and certain hairstyles dependent upon gender, going back to the altar regularly to confess sins, only reading the KJV (although they seem to have loosened that in the years since I left), being at every church service and prayer group, and a whole host of other “holiness standards”. Receiving a free gift is one thing. Baptism in a certain name and speaking in tongues are works as well.

In Revelation 6:16-17 the Bible says, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day of THEIR wrath has come…” In Luke 23:46 the Bible says, “Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into YOUR hands I commit my spirit.” Is Jesus talking to Himself here? In John 16:28 Jesus says, “I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.” Notice Jesus did not say, “I left heaven and became the son, and now I am going back to heaven to become the Father again. In John 16:38 Jesus says, “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.” This verse is saying Jesus has His own will and the Father has His. Yes, they don’t disagree, of course, but still this verse speaks of two wills. In John 14:31 Jesus says, “…but so that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded Me.” In John 5:19 Jesus says, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.” In John 1:1 the Bible says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was WITH God, and the Word was God.” If Oneness was true, shouldn’t this verse say, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God.” John 6:44 says, “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.” Again, if oneness was true, shouldn’t this verse say, “No one can come to me, unless I draw him.” In John 10:15, Jesus says, “…even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.” Matthew 26:29 says, “And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.” Read for yourself; does this sound like oneness, or is Jesus having conversations with the Father within the triune God-head?

I have a question, I have repented and believed and I was baptized years ago in the name of the Lord Jesus as I felt the Lord lead me to and to literally test the waters at a church so different than what I grew up in. I didn’t believe at that time it was needed for the remission of sin so I feel because I didn’t have the faith and do it FOR the remission of sin it didn’t count (without faith it is imposable to please Him). I see now that I didn’t know the full picture. I still don’t know how much a role baptism plays this side of heaven but growing daily. From what I see in the Scriptures right now, faith in the death burial and resurrection of Christ could be applied to your account when you are baptized. It’s not the baptism itself that does it, it’s when you are baptized in obedience that Christ’s righteousness is credited to your account (is this correct?). I also was baptized again in the name of the Lord Jesus a couple weeks ago but I had a little doubt in my heart right before (Ethiopian unique had to believe with ALL his heart prior to being baptized and I feel bc my little bit of doubt I didn’t). Do I need to get baptized again or is my obedience enough? I also have scrupulosity religious OCD so I don’t wanna do it for the wrong reasons. Thanks

One important thing some dont realize is Ephesians 2:8-9 was written to the Ephesian church who had already obeyed the Gospel and been baptized in Jesus' name, not random Ephesian sinners. We can see the beginning of the Ephesian church back in Acts 19:1-6 where Paul ran into believers in Ephesus that had already been through the baptism of repentance through John's message but not even heard of the Holy Spirit. Paul preached Jesus to them and re-baptized them in Jesus' name and they received that Holy Spirit. Why would Paul then re-preach the gospel in a letter he wrote to the people he had already preached it to and had already obeyed the message of baptism? Instead he further explains to them what they had already experienced in Ephesians 2:8-9.

It is imperative to "rightfully divide" the Word of God or it will lead to false doctrine. (Matthew-John) = Gospels. (Acts) = Birth of NT Church. (Romans-Jude) = Letters to already born-again and saved Christians instructing them on how to live and maintain our relationship with Christ. You can't revert back to the Gospels to find the Salvation plan because the Spirit of Christ hadn't yet been poured out, which didn't happen until the day of Pentecost in Acts 2:1-4. Peter stood up afterwards and told us what we must do to be saved in Acts 2:38, and then Paul writes 2/3rds of the NT to Holy Ghost filled ppl who were already saved.

@@thecountrybrother: I disagree. "For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God." (Romans 2:28-29). I am a spiritual Jew through the Spirit of Christ, and was grafted in (Romans 11:17) because I received the Holy Ghost on Oct 3rd, 1999 at age 19, and I had the same exact experience as the Apostles had on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2:1-4, and I also spoke in other tongues and was instantly delivered and set free from multiple drug addictions, cigarettes, alcohol, lying, swearing, stealing and many other sinful things I was bound by, and millions of other ppl have also received the Holy Ghost because they obeyed Acts 2:38, and Acts 2:39 assures us that: "The promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call," which refutes your claim. And you and I are just as much responsible for crucifying Christ because it's humanities sinful nature that crucified Christ, and the Lord died on the Cross for everyone. Lastly, rightfully dividing the Word of God is imperative to understanding sound doctrine and without the Holy Ghost you won't make it into the Kingdom. I testify the truth to you brother and if you want the Holy Ghost just obey Acts 2:38 and you'll see for yourself that I'm right. Even if it takes you months of going down to the alter, as long as you have a repentant heart Christ knows and can see it and will infill you with the Holy Ghost and I guarantee that you'll speak in other tongues and will be delivered and set free from whatever struggles and addictions you may have. And just remember: the promise of the Holy Ghost is "Unto you and to your children, and to all that are afar off; even as many as the Lord our God shall call!" God bless.

When we obey the plan of salvation, we are acting in faith and receiving of God's grace, which is not dependent upon us at all. When we repent, we do not forgive our own sins nor do we believe that God is indebted to forgive our sins, so if our sins are forgiven at repentance, it is based upon God's sovereignty and grace. When we are water baptized in Jesus Name, we do not remit our own sins nor do we believe that God is indebted to remit our sins, so if our sins are remitted at water baptism, it is based upon God's sovereignty and grace. When we are baptized with the Holy Ghost, we do not regenerate ourselves, sanctify ourselves, or justify ourselves, so if through the baptism of the Holy Ghost we are regenerated, sanctified, and justified, then it is based upon God's sovereignty and grace.

How do you reconcile Acts 10:42-48? They received remission of sin after believing, they were circumcised, the Holyghost fell on them, they spoke in tongues, then were baptized in the name of the Lord. So you can receive remission of your sins and be filled with the Holyghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues without being saved?

Acts 10:42-48 doesn't stand alone. Scripture also says that remission of sins is by the blood of Christ and baptism does also wash away our sins.

@@wjdyr6261 I’m all for baptism in Jesus name, I’m a oneness Pentecostal, but the scripture plainly lays out how to be saved in multiple places, faith in the finish work of the cross is what it takes to be saved, period.

This is entirely consistent with what Dr. Bernard was saying. It is not the actual act of being immersed in water that does any forgiveness of our sins. The baptism is the result of our belief. If those gentiles had refused to be baptized, even after they received the Holy Ghost, the Apostles would have had to conclude that they didn't really believe it anymore somehow. We do assume that it is possible for a Christian to lose their salvation through disbelief, so we would have to conclude that they were on a path towards God, and then turned back around and were lost in that hypothetical scenario. If they died immediately after receiving the Holy Ghost but before rejecting what they had just believed, then they would still have been saved.
Also, they were not circumcised... the only use of that word in the passage is referring to the Jews who witnessed the event.

Baptism in Jesus' Name is only one way, other times in Acts even, is the name of the father son and holy spirit. Jesus is not the father or hs only the son. there is one mediator between man and God, thats Jesus.
