New York Philharmonic / Jaap van Zweden -
Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58 (1806)
    00:00 I. Allegro moderato
    20:56 II. Andante con moto
    25:46 III. Rondo vivace
    36:14 Curtain calls
Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, New York, USA / Sep. 18, 2021
New York Philharmonic's opening concert of the 2021-22 season, "From Silence to Celebration"
Major support for these concerts is provided by Mrs. Veronica Atkins.
The Donna and Marvin Schwartz Virtuoso Piano Performance Series has provided major support for Daniil Trifonov’s appearances during the New York Philharmonic’s 2021-22 season.
Guest artist appearances are made possible through the Hedwig van Ameringen Guest Artists Endowment Fund.
    Note:
Daniil performs the second cadenza that Beethoven wrote for the first movement, and one crafted by Theodore Kullak for the third movement.
    Anthony Tommasini's Review:
"[...] As we have come to expect from this remarkable artist, he played magnificently - by turns daring and sensitive, impassioned and poetic. When he wanted us to hear intricate details he brought uncanny clarity to bear. But other times, whole passages unfolded in swaths of milky colorings. The orchestra sounded plush, full-bodied and brilliant in Tully, which, with about a thousand seats, is far smaller than Geffen or Carnegie. [...]"

The pianist's stillness is so right for this most poetic of Beethoven's piano concertos. No wonder the audience applauded at the end of the first movement. There is a searching order to this work from the moment the orchestra first enter with that unexpected B major. Sublime.

I appreciated the seamless transition, in the first movement, coming out of the cadenza, in exact sync between orchestra and piano. The second movement was uniquely sublime, in this pianist's softer than usual dynamic, and uniquely expressive development after the opening of this movement. Throughout the faster and louder sections of the outer movements, Mr. Trifanov maintains a stoically expressive and vulnerable persona. Seamless, expressive, and elegant.

A pity that you didn't get to hear and experience Andrew Tchaikowsky's performance. I was Solo Clarinet and it was like playing with Beethoven himself!

    God bless you!!!🎉

How strange, (or shocking)? audience and its applause at the end of the first movement. Where did the NYPO find this audience? Excellent performance by Daniil Trifonov!
