- Triumph and tragedy: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, performed by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Bernard Haitink. The audience loved this 2009 concert at the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam.
(00:00) Introduction
(00:35) I. Poco sostenuto - Vivace
(14:46) II. Allegretto
(22:46) III. Presto
(32:08) IV. Allegro con brio
Ask a person on the street what their favorite Beethoven symphony is, and they’ll likely say the Fifth, or the Ninth. But ask a classical musician, and a surprising number of times you'll hear: The Seventh. "Here every impetuosity, every longing and ranting of the heart becomes a blissful exuberance of joy." Those effusive words came from the pen of composer Richard Wagner, when he was describing the Symphony No. 7 in A Major, opus 92 by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827).
Composed between 1811 and 1812, Beethoven's Seventh provoked very different reactions from the beginning - it seems to have touched everyone deeply. The main themes in Beethoven's 7th Symphony are triumph and tragedy - the tragedy having to do with the second movement, a sort of funeral procession. It was so well loved at its very first performance that the audience called for it to be repeated. This movement is marked "Allegretto," which can be translated as "slightly fast." But for a funeral march? Certainly, the first listeners must have perceived it as such. The premiere performance of Beethoven's Seventh was at a benefit concert in Vienna for wounded soldiers and their families in December 1813. It came only two months after the Battle of Nations near Leipzig. The German name is "Völkerschlacht" (Slaughter of the Peoples), one of the most catastrophic wartime events in human history. It also marked liberation from Napoleon's forces. The sad, beautiful quality of the second movement makes it very different from the other three movements of Beethoven's Seventh. Endlessly mournful, but also uplifting, it is still played at funerals today.
But the dense juxtaposition of dignified funeral marches and movements full of exuberant joy in Beethoven's Seventh also caused alienation and even rejection among the composer's contemporaries. "He's ripe for the madhouse!" wrote composer Carl Maria von Weber. Weber had just heard a performance of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony with its rollicking fourth movement. It can be amusing to read how the first listeners reacted to a composition that is today a classic. Weber wasn't the only critical voice. Clara Schumann's father, Friedrich Wieck, thought that "this symphony - particularly the first and the last movements - could only have been written in a state of inebriation."
Fast-forward from then to now: Need a little lift? Then listen to the finale to Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A Major, opus 92, marked "Allegro con brio" (fast, with verve). The tempestuous interpretation by Bernard Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam was met with thundering applause and enthusiastic calls for an encore.

I remember being a kid in the car listening to my dad hum the 7th when he drove. I just lost my dad today, but I will forever have him humming the 7th in my heart. I miss him so much already.
My dad and my dad ,for some reason😅 was the only radio we have . I love it
I am very sorry for you loss. May he rest in peace.
We're sorry for your loss. May the 7th Symphony forever remind you of him.
Our Lord and our Father watch over his Soul

Haitnik always makes me smile when he starts the 4th movement -- so cute! "You all looking at me?" :)
How do people live without Beethoven. For me it's soul food and I feed my soul everyday with some of his music.
He’s cool (yeah really)
I think the same.
Mahler is up there as well for sure !!!!!

Die much earlier, like my parents in northern China. This music can extend human life according to Chinese traditonal medicine theory, but during the long history ,we lost our ancient music.
The sheer genious of Beethoven shines in this symphony!
Have been listening to this incredibly beautiful piece for nearly 60 years, and the allegretto bring me to tears
EVERY TIME!!!
Beethoven had a direct telephone line with heaven. The fuge in the second movement is the essence of beauty exploding into magnificent aesthetics waves.
This composition is astounding particularly when one considers that Beethoven composed this symphony when absolutely deaf. That can, as an understatement, only be genius. Bravo!
❤❤ absolutely right
Love this symphony, I just got through a major surgery. The master helps me feel emotions like no other musician. Listening to it brings tears to my eyes.
4:52 I vividly remember all these years later that I wept like a baby when I first heard this. Without me knowing, this was exactly what I needed to hear in that movement.

Whilst my father lay in a coma from which he never woke I played him the Deutsche Grammaphonen Beethoven symphonies...his favourite being No7.
After his death I discovered from those who cared for him that his life signs changed and he seemed more restful to them. I cannot hear this without missing him and bathing in the overwhelming beauty of such a masterpiece. Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you for sharing this incredibly private story with us, it means a lot!
I too have just listened to this floating in the memory of my father. He was a French horn player and loved Beethoven. Listening tonight has brought an emotional closeness. Thank you for your comment - I felt a poignant kinship with it.
How a man coping with the loss of his hearing created this is beyond my comprehension. After the beautiful pastoral symphonies (6th) he really showed a new level of ingenuity
고전음악 역사에서 베토벤은 삐놓을수 없는 대가이다 이것은 그의 음악이 말해준다
I believe the second movement is conveying his advanced loss of hearing.
He could hear from heaven.
Thank you
@@lisamoag6548 I agree!
We played the second movement at our wedding as the processional at a slightly quicker pace. Still married after 43 years.
We're happy to hear that 🙂
I love it, i would have never thought of using this selection. We used as the processional Brahm's variantian on theme by Haydn... married 27 years! 😃
I will always love & thank my dad for teaching me all about music & to love all music, but this symphony is beyond description, Beethoven was truly one of the greatest geniuses who ever lived!

Well deserved standing ovation for such an epic performance !!!!!
I have had the great privilege of being in the Prom at the RAH many times over forty years when Sir Bernard conducted. I was present at his last Prom. Watching him leave the stage for the last ever time will live with me for ever. He caught my eye as he left.
This performance, the sound quality, the camera angles are all up the the wondrous ;level of the performance itself. I must say, he takes the last movement a bit faster than I would like, but I loved it all. So glad he performed all the repeats - it makes such a difference !
RIP Sir and Bravo, Bravo.

Classical music creates a beautiful picture in one's mind.I exposed my wife Classical I told her to close her eyes and draw upon a vision.

Stunning! I have requested this piece for the fall with the orchestra I play with. What a masterpiece of a piece.
Thanks, Ludvig! Congratulations to the maestro and the orchestra. Impeccable performance. Superb, wonderful, sublime... Regards from Rio de Janeiro.
The second movement is so sad yet not without hope. Marvelous performance.
The finale of the 7th symphony is one of my favorite Beethoven symphonic movements, it's absolutely mind-blowing.
It just takes off like a Messerschmit about 1/3 thru a graceful height of 40,000ft and unloads

Not to mention the slow 2nd movement. A rare combination of deepest sorrow and a ray of hope to affirm that it wasn't all in vain.
😊 Happy to be living on the same planet with you 🎉 What a treat.
Haitink was a treasure...such a generous and giving man, and a sure hand with everything he touched as a conductor.
I was so fortunate to see Maestro Haitink on numerous occasions. He was truly one of the great conductors. You never got the sense of ego from him; he was always serving the music first and foremost.
You mean the guy waving the stick? I suppose he waved it okay but I think the musicians should get the credit. As far as I can tell they pretty much ignore the guy with the stick.
this is satire right?@@MightyCarnac
My greatest favorite of

Agreed it touches the heights and deprhs of emotions.
This is a concert to be not just heard, but also seen. I have had this on an LP record for 40 years now, but this video gives me a renewed experience. Every symphony of Beethoven's is a celebration, of music, orchestration and, above all, of this genius.
Excellent! Have listened to this work countless times over my 72 years; this is one of the greatest presentations I've heard.

Conductor really speaks for the music in his approach.
Very beautiful,thank you!
Look at maestro Haitink's LEFT arm/hand from 39:25. It is so powerful. It conveys the utter will power of this conductor and orchestra to do it like they think it should be done. And then during the applause (41:41) there is this little abrupt thank-you movement with the hand. The signature movement of Bernard Haitink. Full of graciousness and happiness.

Heaven sent🕊glorious music.
FINALLY put a name to this music that I know well enough to sing along with!!!
I did not grow up with Beethoven despite having one parent, two uncles, and both sets of grandparents who were performing professional musicians!!
What on earth did they listen to? Well done for choosing Romanticism!
What incredibly precise conducting.
... in an atmosphere where musicians aren't cramped and still breathe.
Großartiger, ganz toller Dirigent und ebensolches Orchester.
Beautiful!
Somebody did a great job of recording this performance. They captured all the instruments and subtleties of the symphony. Thanks for posting.
We're glad you enjoyed the video 😊
I'm always happy to hear recording where the conductor and the recording engineer(s) were on the same page regarding making sure all the component individual colors of the orchestration in the composition can be identified.
Agree 👍🏻
World class conductor.
This is what “beautiful” means…..I guess- thanks Mr. B.❤
Exceptionally well done!
40:19 the look in the maestro's face, so grateful and relieved…after all the years’ experience and the reputation i can really feel that he still loves music with all his heart
I said exactly the same to myself out loud when it finished. Yes!
Haitink, the all time Maestro, unsurpassed, especially with this sort of repertoire, simply fantastic!
Great performance, top conductor.❤❤❤
I have no words to describe the joy this music brings to me. Beethoven, Conductor Haitink and the Royal Contertgebouw Orchestra are the best combination ever!
I agree with you. From Japan 🇯🇵, JST、0:57分
Bravo, Maestro Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra! I've been a bit obsessed with Beethoven's 7th for some time, and had the pleasure of attending the Ft. Worth Symphony Orchestra's performance of the 7th early this year. 2022 has been my personal "Year of Beethoven"; I've attended a number of concerts by both the FWSO and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and heard several Beethoven symphonies (including the symphony of symphonies, the 9th) and piano concertos. What a thrill it's been!! Though nothing beats a live performance, listening to/watching all the classical music on YTube is the next best thing. I'm grateful to all the musicians/orchestras and to YTube for providing such a rich diversity of music for us to enjoy 🥰🎵

I always new I was different from the rest of my family as I discovered classical music at the age of ten .It moved my soul and my heart . Thank you to all the great composers ❤
And I always thought it was just me!
I like that the camera is so much focused on Haitink himself in his conducting of this orchestra. It becomes a memory of the importance he had in classical music for so many years. Thank you, great master.
An excellent balance between the conductor and the musicians. Both in the camera work.
How I love this second movent!!!

Wspaniały koncert, gratulacje
🎵 Your music is a timeless treasure, a gift to the world that will be cherished and admired for generations to come. 🎁🎶
Mozart used to be my favorite composer, however I'm getting older Ludwig gets to feel much deeper than Mozart he's like chocolate cake.
YES!! He takes the repeats. What a bass section! Bravi!
Surely one of the finest performances of this symphony. There's just nothing like conducting for the music instead of ego, as it seems to me. Very big thank you.
We're glad you enjoyed it! 😊

Eine schöne Symphonie!!! Gut eingespielt!!! Ganz toll!!!
The 2nd movement of this symphony is out of this world!!
My favorite of Beethoven
Absolutely, just like my first movement this morning.
I LOVE the second movement!!! I always thought this was Beethoven’s funeral march, not the second movement of Eroica. I only came to listen to Eroica years after I had already fell in love with the 7th and it’s wonderful second movement
Did you ever listen to George Solti’s performance on RUclips? It was probably from the 1990s in an Asian country, not sure which one. That second movement is out of this world but this rivals it

Haitink and concertgebouw is all you can ask from classical music
My late mother saw him once on Dutch tv. She did not know much about classical music. But when she saw and heard Bernard Haitink she sat down till the end. Then she said: this is so beautiful. He knows how to make the music
come alive.
Merci beaucoup.
Fantastic acoustic at the Concertgebouw
El legado de Beethoven será recordado hasta el fin de los tiempos, que maravilla de interpretación, un gusto poder estar vivo y tener el privilegio de escuchar semejante obra, gracias por compartir y saludos desde Venezuela.
Haitink was still energetic at that time. What a great performance.
Just beautiful
Transcendent. I have been transported to another plane of existence.
This performance so reminds me of that of Carlos Kleiber + Concertgebouw. That good (and somewhat similar, in a very good way). Haitink is great, and of course Concertogebouw delivers the finest. Love it.
A sublime performance from the Concertgebouw, and the great master Haitink, whose devotion to beauty has illumined my life for half a century.
Magnificent performance. I must say, the camera editing is outstanding; the viewer is always where the action is.

Beethoven is very Good and beautiful. ❤
I love Beethoven's music and the 7th Symphony is truly remarkable. I am a dedicated amateur jazz pianist and have even been trying to play the opening theme of the 2nd movement by ear as I cannot read music. Apparently when this great work received its premiere, Beethoven had to be turned round to realise that the audience were on their feet thunderously applauding. The scene is depicted beautifully in the film "Immortal Beloved" from 1995 with Gary Oldman as Beethoven. That this great genius could be robbed of his hearing by his early 30s and yet leave what he did for humanity for all time is truly remarkable. Beethoven represents the triumph over adversity, his life was not easy, and he denied himself the stability of a loving relationship in order to dedicate himself to his music. A genius and also a heroic figure. When I improvise on jazz tunes at the digital piano in my local church I like to think that I am on a low rung of the ladder of musical creativity, a hierarchy of music which leads to the likes of Beethoven at the very top. I love it when he did variations eg Diabelli variations for piano. My favourite works of the German genius are: Symphonies 1,3,5,6,7 and 9; the piano sonatas, especially the later ones; the songs; the late quartets as performed by the very best players. Beethoven also had humour in his music too eg in the Eroica piano variations at one point. We should always encourage family and friends who don't know Beethoven's music to try it, for me it is like a lifelong friend that never lets you down. Great performance from Bernard Haitink and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, much appreciated on a night when I could not get to sleep.
I play the second mov as a valse at my piano also.
The scene you're talking about, based on slightly tuned historical fact, is during the premiere of the 9th symphony.
@@victorross2809 Happy to be corrected, had always thought it was the 7th. It was a very good film as I recall.
