Brilliant Beethoven, the great genius from Bonn who never disappoints. The 3rd Symphony is mind-blowing and this is a superb performance by ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and Michael Boder. To my ears the Austrian and German orchestras often seem a cut above some of the others, I think it is the quality of the string playing perhaps. Trying to imagine how this incredible music would have seemed to the audiences when it was new. I would love to travel back in time and hear Beethoven at the piano improvising, perhaps in one of those improvising duels he would sometimes do. I play jazz piano by ear, cannot read music, and like to improvise and I love Beethoven's use of variations eg the Diabelli variations for piano. Life was not easy for Beethoven, he represents a heroic triumph over adversity.

Thank you for this nice comment. The step between Autumn Leaves in a jazz arrangement and this Beethoven is perhaps shorter than we often think. Music is music, who knows what mr B had thought about nowaday music?

    • @autumnleaves2766
      @autumnleaves2766 Год назад +5

@@staffanolofsson8201 Some of the modern popular music has such banal chord sequences, but Beethoven would no doubt have come up with interesting variations and would have harmonised well. Youngsters need to listen to the final movement of the 7th Symphony, an example of a back beat in classical music which drives along with great energy. Or the final movement of the Opus 111 piano sonata no 32, that syncopated section which is like jazz a hundred years before jazz was invented. What a genius Beethoven was. My Beethoven T-shirts have arrived today too, one for me and one for a family member who also loves this German giant of classical music.

Reading "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter", by Carson McCullers: On Beethoven's Third- "For a minute the opening balanced from one side to the other. Like a walk or march. Like God strutting in the night." Upon reading this I had to find Beethoven's Third and relive it again, after so many years, and feel my heart soar!

Ever heard of Mozart and Haydn, Bach and Handel, et al ?

Beethoven did switch sides; musically, politically, and emotionally he moved away from the ideals of French revolutionism corrupted into Napoleonism into a better appreciation of the democratic ideals of Great Britain as a better way of modernising the absolutism still found across much of Europe - the evidence can be heard in virtually every note of Opus 91.

    • @Deuce7Off
      @Deuce7Off Месяц назад

@@roberthill799 This, the Eroica was originally written for Napoleon but the name was changed. History isn't that simple, Napoleon was looked at as a revolutionary by some and a opressor by others. His impact on the world is still felt today centuries after his death with the splitting of New Spain into Mexico which gave the Americans a small window to invade Mexico while it was a young nation. California, Texas, Nevada, Mexico and more would've had vastly different historic timelines were it not for Napoleon's wrath.

      Hello Elaine.
Whilst one has to embrace many styles of music, such as pop, or jazz, classical, or even punk, it is human nature to individually select the ultimate piece, or body of work, that has resonated with you, the most. The ultimate test is to imagine the following scenario:
You are on a desert island that you love, and it shall be for eternity, as the island shall never wither, as you have complete control over it, for ever and ever.
You live forever, without ageing, and never get ill. You are at your physical and mental peak, the body and fitness of your desire.
You control the weather, the view, the tides, the sun sets. Your favourite foods and drink have a limitless supply, and no adverse effect upon your weight.
You have a sexual soulmate/partner for eternity, who likewise, never ages, and the sex is orgasmic each and every time.
      HOWEVER:-
Your music for eternity must be restricted to the entire works of just
one solo artist, or one band or group, or one composer.
      THE CATCH???
Whilst you get to choose from those options (but not one from each), you shall only know the works associated with your selection.
You shall never, ever, know of any other artist group, band, composer.... just the selected music of your freely chosen definitive musical influence upon your life. You have nothing with which to compare your selection, as your selection is the only music ever produced. It is forever, unique.
Nasty game, don't you think ????
I created this awful game, as, at times, I cannot bare to pick favourites, never mind have all memory erased of all other artists and music genres that ever existed !!!!!
The mental cruelty is too much to bare!
      SAYING THAT,....
My own personal choice, meeting all of the horribly self imposed restraints that I have set out, would be the entire body of work that Neil Young gifted to us all. Primarily as a songwriter, more so than a singer, though I love his voice.
I allow myself a wider selection at times, just to ease the pain!
      Male artist:
      NEIL YOUNG.
      Female artist:
      CELINE DION.
      Group:
      ABBA.
      Composer:
      BEETHOVEN.
      Favourite single:
SOMETHING GOTTA HOLD OF MY HEART (The 1968 original release by Gene Pitney).
      Classical Music:
      THE PLANETS by Gustav Holst.
      Male Actor:
      LAURENCE OLIVIER.
      Female Actress:
      ISABELLE HUPPERT.
      Favourite Film:
ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST.
      Favourite season:
      SPRING.
      Favourite book:
      MYSTERIES by Colin Wilson.
Hope my reply did not bore you too much.
I am 65, living in Bristol, England.
I would be honoured if you were to be so kind as to provide me with your own list, in strictly the same order, and list of categories, as I myself have set out, above.
      With my kindest regards,
      Brian.

Beethoven is one of the many many great composers in today's world. Many great composers are from India, China, Japan, Russia, Iran etc, because of economic situations, they didn't get the right kind of promotions , simple as that, they were as great or even greater.

I enjoyed this performance immensely. I particularly liked the tempo changes in the 2nd movement, which I'm not accustomed to. I've heard the old Toscanini performance most often.

I adore sacred music so it’s hard for me to put the likes of Vivaldi and Bach to one side. Beethoven is a genius. Mozart too. Thank God for all of our incredible composers.

My only criticism would be the camera angles compared with other YT orchestral presentations as I love to see individual players with their particular oboe, flute or horn techniques 🙂👏

And to think, that at the beginning! the great Beethoven, dedicated this beautiful and energetic Symphony to the Little Corporal. But as Napoleon's Ego grew, in proclaiming himself as Emperor of the French. Immediately, the famous son of Bonn, revoked such famous dedication. Beethoven was the Napoleon in music, specially in IMPROVISATION! Napoleon did improvise in war. And the great PHILOSOPHER! of Bonn, did it. But in MUSIC! of the Higher Spheres! ☝️🔥

Yes, but Beethoven never met his Wellington, nor suffered a Waterloo.

"The first public performance took place on April 7, 1805 and was conducted by Beethoven himself." Ah yes, I remember it well, & here I am listening to this treatment 79,982 days later.

True. And a great performance. It is different to Beethoven's number 9. Think I like this one better. the wisdom embedded in its notes is unmistakable

The orchestra plays very well and of course you can't really go too far wrong with Beethoven. I do hope the conductor managed to catch his train though.
