Even *this* 4th movement is technically slow relative to Beethoven's metronome marking -- whole note = 84! This performance clocks in closer to 75, even 70 at times. Still, no one else seems to have the courage to even approach Orozco-Estrada's already slightly slow tempo and it's a huge disappointment. At this speed the movement just flies past with unmatched vigor and light-footedness. I can't listen to most other interpretations at all as they just slog all over the place. This orchestra also does an amazing job staying incredibly crisp and tight even at such a tempo. These are some absolutely world class players. And it seems like no matter which Beethoven symphony he touches, Orozco-Estrada always does a fantastic job bringing out its lighter side, producing some amazingly dance-like interpretations. The entire rest of the symphony is also just so wonderfully and tastefully done. What a wonderful achievement.

@@davidcarter3049 Paavo Järvi with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen reaches 84, it sounds fantastic. Järvi also has a performance of it with the Frankfurters, just a little bit faster than Orozco Estrada. Harnoncourt with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe is about the same tempo as Orozco Estrada (Harnoncourt is one of AOE's heros).

Hi I love the 8th also. Have recently been listening to this conductor and orchestra, I really like them. I find Beethoven’s 4th symphony to be incredibly happy and joyous. May I suggest the performance with Leonard Bernstein on RUclips or the performance with Claudio Abbado also on RUclips. The 4th starts out dark but Beethoven tricks you and takes you on a great ride. Enjoy!

That reaction is precisely what Beethoven wants you to do and was doing so himself when he wrote his "little symphony in F". The "bigger" one being No 6 !!! He actually goes backwards from the 7th and almost makes fun of Haydn & Mozart. It's a very underestimated piece.

For me, there's a "sweet spot" that is definitely not too fast (if too hurried, it's impossible for the musicians to produce all the nuances) Pre-- 1980s: too ponderous. 1990s: too technically "advanced"= too fast; brittle. But this century, some PERFECT RENDITIONS.
