If you've never cried to Mozart before, the middle movement is a good place to start. An astonishing piece expertly and beautifully played.

The middle movement is the most beautiful song ever written , as one who has played it often. Requires great emotional restraint to complete...and one wishes to play it over once more, just for one's self...no one else. But, the merry, delightful final movement awaits.

Growing up in San Bernardino in the fifties and sixties my only exposure to classical music was Chuck Berry singing roll over Beethoven and something about Tchaikovsky. At 23 I attended Biola Bible College in L A, where I experienced my first classical music concert. I moved to San Diego and listened to the local classical music station every day. In 1980 I discovered the classical guitar and since have learned to read classical music and the history of classical music over the last 500 years. What a life changer it was to discover this music!

THe sheer sensitivity of Danil's playing captured my heart and my soul ; "a thing of beauty is a joy for ever" - and that is what he gave us all- a thing of beauty. The semantical comments are misplaced and, most likely, to be uttered by those knowingly less capable. I am very fortnate to have a "good ear" for ALL music but cannot read a word of music. By denigrating it, why try to deny me of this wonderful moment in my life ( now in its 9th decade)

I have listened to many recordings of this glorious concerto but none of them competes with this one. The Orchestra is brilliant..look at the faces of the performers and the glorious sensitivity of the pianist is heart wrenching especially in the slow movement. Then the relief and pleasure..relief of the whole Orchestra when the 3rd movement is played. One violinist smiles from time. One of the brass players is overcome with emotion. The flautist and main woodwind player are so brilliant..intense concentration. A very dear conductor who carries his team with him nodding and encouragement. What utter pleasure.

My favorite performance of this piece is by Rubenstein himself. Both the orchestra and Rubinstein's playing itself brought out tragic aspects of the second movement so powerfully yet without the slightest amount of affectation or exaggeration which I have found in some performances. I remember playing it for a friend and she told me she couldn't listen to it because she would cry. I played it anyway. She did become tearful, but she survived, and I dare say, she was the better for it.

The 14 notes from 18:32 onwards are the most moving series of notes I've ever heard. The space Daniil leaves each note to resonate in your heart is sublime.

I was up close with him once and his ability to get a specific sound out of the piano was incredible. He asked for some minor changes to be made to the instrument and when the tuner was done he played a few bars of a Chopin and promptly left the building. I wallked to the piano immediately afterwards to try and recreate his sound. It took about 12 attempts to get it and I had to concentrate all the way. His sound changes depending on the rep. He is a truly astonishing artist. As a postscript to that story, he was nowhere to be found until minutes to his recital. He was dishevilled and eating a pie out of a bag - someone straightened his tie and took the pie off him, gave him a towel to wipe his hands. He never spoke but just walked on stage and played like a god. Utterly breathtaking ability.

Everyone needs something before he or she goes onstage. In the case of famous Mozart pianist Geza Anda, a chain smoker, he was often found puffing on a cigarette right up until the very last moment, crushing out the butt as he walked onstage from the wings.

Daniil Trifonov plays with great sensitivity, and delicateness the 23rd Piano Concerto of Mozart. There is an aura of sublimity in his rendition, as if we were not on earth, but in the heavenly spheres of the Gandharvas. This interpretation moves me to tears.

You see, human beings express and communicates to others through words and the voice but also through the expression on their face. If the expression on the face contradicts what the pianist is trying to express by playing, he is hindering his listeners to understand and enjoy the piece played. Some pianists have decided to keep a calm face while playing - Arthur Rubinstein for instance - and some are just letting their expression be as it happens.
