Probably the best recording of this concerto, the lightness of the orchestra matches Daniil's touch perfectly, but can be heavy when needed. Truly captured the spirit of Mozart.

This way he looks by playing piano is the proof for me that he can feel the real music and the emotions in it with his heart and that he understand all this wonderful things which Mozart wanted to say with his music. You can here the sweetness and the magic in his playing. A amazing pianist.

My favorite performance of this piece is by Rubenstein himself. Both the orchestra and Rubinstein's playing itself brought out tragic aspects of the second movement so powerfully yet without the slightest amount of affectation or exaggeration which I have found in some performances. I remember playing it for a friend and she told me she couldn't listen to it because she would cry. I played it anyway. She did become tearful, but she survived, and I dare say, she was the better for it.

You see, human beings express and communicates to others through words and the voice but also through the expression on their face. If the expression on the face contradicts what the pianist is trying to express by playing, he is hindering his listeners to understand and enjoy the piece played. Some pianists have decided to keep a calm face while playing - Arthur Rubinstein for instance - and some are just letting their expression be as it happens.

I was up close with him once and his ability to get a specific sound out of the piano was incredible. He asked for some minor changes to be made to the instrument and when the tuner was done he played a few bars of a Chopin and promptly left the building. I wallked to the piano immediately afterwards to try and recreate his sound. It took about 12 attempts to get it and I had to concentrate all the way. His sound changes depending on the rep. He is a truly astonishing artist. As a postscript to that story, he was nowhere to be found until minutes to his recital. He was dishevilled and eating a pie out of a bag - someone straightened his tie and took the pie off him, gave him a towel to wipe his hands. He never spoke but just walked on stage and played like a god. Utterly breathtaking ability.

Everyone needs something before he or she goes onstage. In the case of famous Mozart pianist Geza Anda, a chain smoker, he was often found puffing on a cigarette right up until the very last moment, crushing out the butt as he walked onstage from the wings.
