Makes you wonder what a finished version would be like. Several musicologists have attempted to finish it but I don't know if Schubert would have appreciated their efforts. Schubert & Mozart both died far too young.
Schubert's Unvollende is connected to my family history. My Finnish father passed away 19 years ago. He was a veteran of two wars. In 1939, aged 17 and orphan, he volunteered for the Winter War. He survived and then battled the entirety of the Continuation War against Soviet Union in the front. He did not brag about his exploits, but something tells about the caliber of the man that he started out as a private with three days' armed training (yes!) and ended up as a lieutenant in charge of an anti-tank unit. Later, in reserve, he reached the rank of a major. In his memoirs, written in the 80s and never published, he expresses pride of one achievement: As an officer cadet in 1942, he played the clarinet solo of the Unvollende when the orchestra of the school paid a visit of the town of Vaasa, Finland. How's that for an achievement! Whenever I hear this music, I think of those skinny and wiry young men in their grey uniforms playing this magically beautiful music.
Beautiful Symphony, it brings me happy memory when I played this piece of music in 1963 in N, Ireland Junior Orchestra with Terrence Lovett of Covent Garden, London as conductor. He chose me to be the Leader of the Orchestra. Happy memory!
All her life, our Mother, Livia Bally, (born August 3, 1927 Budapest, Hungary) wanted this played at her Memorial. Today her final wish was fulfilled. We played this. ❤
I read in a biography of Schubert that he wrote this after being diagnosed with a terminal illness in his twenties. He underwent painful heavy metal medications to try to rid himself of the disease; his hair fell out, much like chemotherapy these days. As he naturally got less symptomatic, he put this symphony down and went onto other things. That’s why there are only two movements. The symphonic works that followed were surprisingly cheerful. When you listen to the first mvt., you can imagine young Schubert is afraid, suspecting something's not right... Little by little he finds more clues that he's seriously ill....at the climax, the dissonant chords is when he discovers his horrible fate. After this, knowing his life is irrevocably altered, he still forges ahead, continuing to create stunningly beautiful music.
I love the contrasting themes. He is never extremely dramatic but you feel the drama inside yourself. few notes and there is the drama surrounded by poetic themes that remain firmly in you mind a great genius. great interpretation great orchestra compliment
The perfect symphony. My favorite. Rhythmic and melodic motifs brilliantly arranged, pizzicati throughout, woodwinds accompanying rich celli melodies, bold pre-Shostakovich-like brass. Such warm tone in my EarPods. Playing as one in tempi set by a sensitive conductor. Bravo.
Travelling comfortably throughout the cosmos has never been more realistically possible to realise while on spaceship Earth. Schubert's No. 8 and Maestro Fischer make the experience joyfully lifting and magic. I am enthralled.
For me, this is the best-ever Schubert 8. That's just for me, though, but I do adore the longevity of the first movement. There is so much more going on when the tempo is slower and we can therefore absorb the true musical message. Thank you, Maestro, for allowing the second movement to breathe. Many thanks to the Budapest Festival Orchestra for this utterly marvelous performance.
I played this symphony with my local youth orchestra probably around 5 years ago at this point. Sadly the orchestra suffered hard from the pandemic and ended up going defunct. This symphony brings me so much nostalgia for playing with them.
This has always been a very favorite music piece of mine, ever since childhood. And now that I've entered my (predictably) last quarter-century of life, it'll be a shame (at least for me) to leave not only it, but this music as well. It touches my emotions now even more than ever. The occasional innovations this director brings to it keep me waiting expectantly for the next one. In a word, I'm well pleased. Many thanks for introducing this performance to this medium! JAT
Dear John Hurley, we are very pleased to hear that this piece is so emotionally valuable to you. It is great that you are open to innovations even with a favourite piece that you have cherished for so long. Perhaps you will find even more treasures in our channel. Best regards from Berlin!
Wonderful. This is the best version that I have heard so far. I recall hearing this composition during the opening of the movie Being There starring Peter Sellers. The character Chauncey wakes up and turns on his TV set and watches a symphony playing this beautiful classical music that sets the tone of the movie with the pathos of the main character in the movie. It took me over forty years to appreciate this unfinished symphony as a masterpiece.
I am not a musician so I cannot appreciate the amount of talent it takes to perform at this level of perfection. My enjoyment, apart from the music is watching so many different people in total unison without hesitation as they apply their craft, amazing.

When I was young, in early 80's, I attempted to collect and compare all recordings of "Unfinished", which would have been far easier if we had had Apple Music, Spotify, etc. I was totally immersed in it for about six months. And I came down to Bruno Walter/NY Phil as my #1 pick, with a couple of almost equally good renditions. The worst was Riccardo Muti's; it was truly 'unfinished Unfinished'. The only rendition after then that really impressed me was Carlos Kleiber's. Even though I've got to admit that it was not the best among his phenomenal but scarce recordings, it was still one of the best renderings. Now this live performance is pretty satisfactory in its build-up and structuring, albeit it is little bit wanting in sonority. I'm happy that in this age when great civilizations are declining there are still those who inherit, share, and transmit them.
I too like the Walter/NY Phil "old school" recording very much. This one feels a bit rushed (the style of the day is to play everything "briskly" --- wrong in general, and particularly so in the "Unfinished"). Try the live Abbado w/the Berlin (on RUclips), and (believe it or not) Bernstein's w/the Concertgebouw on DGG. Gunter Wand's is excellent (with NDR orchestra) and so is Eschenbach's w/the Frankfurt Radio (live) also on RUclips, who takes more liberties, but appropriately so. You'll have trouble picking a favorite. I know I did, although Abbado's is flawless.
@dejuren Indeed! When virtually all music in the world is just a click away, not only have we lost enjoyment of music in togetherness, but also a sense of spiritual exploration, which elevates our mundane experience of life unto something beyond.
@@Ageless-yh7gv Thank you very much for the recommendation. I'll definitely try Abbado's live recording. However, I doubt whether I can find a joy from it as much as I did when there was a 'scarcity' of the commodity. I still vividly remember a day when a lucky guy won a bidding to buy a used vinyl of John McCormack, which featured "Maggie", in Seoul about 30 years ago. Everybody in that store envied his fortune. At that time, importing music album was strictly regulated, and thus, it was extremely difficult to buy it. At a time when I was finally able to buy a couple of albums through a long, uncertain days of waiting (of course, with an exorbitant price tagged on it), it felt like a day of triumph. "Durch Leiden zur Freude," indeed! What a precious moment it was when, in almost a ritualistic act of worship, I carefully opened, cleaned, and put it on a turntable! That day is gone.

This Unfinished Symphony is completely sublime, ethereal, and pleasing to the ear. How could this be titled Unfinished Symphony when Schubert completed the Ninth Symphony? Excellent version from the conductor Ivan Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra.
Some years ago a logos occurred to me “Music expresses wordless odysseys”. Schubert’s eight Symphony is such a tender unfurling epic journey with sighs of soulful heartthrobs. Never sad but beautifully tragic. PWG
I'm just what you would call your average peasant/working guy. When I was in collage, they had the student symphony playing and in a what the heck kind of mood, I decided to go. This was the first song, and I was right in the front, as I had arrived early. The music literally felt like it was vibrating against my body and was a very moving experience.
I love the charm on one of the French Horn Player's instruments! It adds character to the orchestra and reminds us that there are actual people making this wonderful music, not just faceless instruments (I mean obviously it's not hard to keep that in mind with a live video, but now when I'm only listening to it, I have someone to think about lol)

This Unfinished Symphony is completely sublime, ethereal, and pleasing to the ear. How could this be titled Unfinished Symphony when Schubert completed the Ninth Symphony? Excellent version from the conductor Ivan Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra.
Because he didn't want to complete it.
I love this! And here it is! I got lucky tonight and here is beautiful thing right here in a GREAT performance!! Jim Martin Nashvile TN
Some years ago a logos occurred to me “Music expresses wordless odysseys”. Schubert’s eight Symphony is such a tender unfurling epic journey with sighs of soulful heartthrobs. Never sad but beautifully tragic. PWG
I have never enjoyed this music as much as in this uptaking. Thank you.
That's music to our ears. We're glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Absolutely beautiful. Brings tears of joy to my eyes every time.
this is such an epic piece of music. missing words every time I hear it.
Superb performance. Heartbreakingly beautiful. Thank you
We're glad you enjoyed it! 🥰
Heard live for first time last night. Fantastic.
Videos really bring the music to life, makes you concentrate more. Sound only and your mind can wander
Excellent phrasing, dynamics, articulation, balance and intonation; furthermore, audio recording and video editing were very well done. Beautiful piece…Bravo!
You also should hear kara Jan and Berlin Philharmonia Orchestra version,it is dream lilke ....

Another couple of Schubert's great works are the 9th symphony "The Great". And Schubert's Serenade.
This has carried me through life since I was a little boy full of dreams. All remains unfinished as it should be.
This is masterfully done and it is one of my all time favorites. But for me this always comes second to his “Great” Symphony! Just don’t ask me why. I could never explain it!
Beautifully executed!!

Great performance 👏🏻👏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻

This performance has neither a piece of hesitation nor a speck or cloudiness
This masterpiece will reach the stage of spiritual awakening after getting a delusion out of one's head

Despite being an unfinished symphony, this one has a very beautiful “ending”

You can tell from the performers they come from a place where everyone still remembers a history of having gone through alot of sheit.😢
Wow and merci from Montreal, Québec , Canada
Thanks for your comment! And best from Berlin 😊
Orquesta joven. Bueno el sonido.
