Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5
Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 is an ingenious construction on the most famous four notes in Western music history: the short-short-short-long motif with which the Fifth Symphony begins. Beethoven would have said about it: “fate is knocking at the door”. Beethoven’s contemporary E.T.A. Hoffmann wrote an influential review of the Fifth Symphony. According to him, the music sets in motion “a mechanism of awe, fear, horror and pain. It is imbued with longing, which is the essence of romance”. “The Fifth” naturally became immensely popular.
Iván Fischer, conductor
Iván Fischer has been a welcome guest conductor with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra since 1987. Fischer’s way of working, which is as unusual as it is committed, and the musicians’ enthusiasm and virtuosity always result in very special performances. You can watch the performance of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony with or without Iván Fischer’s commentary. The conductor’s fascinating explanation takes you straight to Beethoven’s time.
I was born in 1972......I studied mathematics and physics.....with a minor in music.....
Now that I'm retired from HVAC mechanic
I religiously listen to music....especially early period arrangements
I love listening to this genre. My dad struggled with war memories; I remember that he taught classical music to a college town in California. They did not understand his theories about how to create this kind of gloriousness though, and think that is why we moved back to Texas. But he was very serious about his love for this type of music. I came to embrace it when I got older. I miss him so much. God bless you, Zack Stewart (my dad; I love his name!). I do realize why you loved this music so much. It seems that I appreciate it more and more as time goes on. I miss you so much, Dad. God bless you.
It seems he gave you the best of human's civilization ... Music the best among arts and education of life starting from BEFORE birth till end of COSMOS TIME infinity...
Sue Kimmey: So much love for your father...I suppose you were pretty close too? I wish I had been closer to mine. He had his childhood wounds and not learnt emotional contact with himself, and could not nurture my girl-soul to grow freely. Only after his death did I get it properly , that he gave his love for us through all his practical work, help and fixing.I blame(d) myself for not being the humorous, simple kind of daughter he could relate more to. I am grateful for his work-ethic, faithfulness, tenacity and orderliness. He should have set limits to my traumatized mother's abuse though... Were you free of abuse, suppression? - Hope my connecting is OK. I was touched by your loving epitaph of yours.
This never gets old. Seeing the musicians getting into it and using their whole body like it's heavy metal headbanging from the 1800s is just awesome
David C: So true. That is why they are called "classic. It goes for clothes too. Classic, quality, never goes out of fashion."
This is what I can describe Ivan Fischer's performance of Beethoven's 5th symphony and Beethoven himself: POWER!!
The way each note blends seamlessly with the next and the way the sound builds and swells to create a lush, emotional landscape is nothing short of mesmerizing. There's something about the sound of a group of violins playing together in harmony that is both soothing and exhilarating, and it's no wonder that this instrument has been a cornerstone of classical music for centuries. Whether you're listening to a solo violinist or a full symphony orchestra, the power and beauty of the sound will leave you in awe.
Probably the best depiction of the drama of life. The fire lit up burns endlessly .The most poignant moment of this work is when we are made to face our destiny and we are mauled. The rest is history.
Thank you Beethoven. You moved me to tears.
fantastico un abbraccio da l’italia
00:00 1. Allegro con brio
07:45 2. Andante con moto - Più moto
18:21 3. Allegro
23:59 4. Allegro - Presto
Thanks. This will help me a lot for my listening exam
Thank you
@Mvs M they’re not properly movements, but thanks anyway!
This is actually
1. Allegro con brio
2. Andante con moto
3-4. Scherzo - Allegro; Allegro - Presto
The reason why i said movement 3-4 because they are still played together
Just a typical football-playing American high school kid went to college and took a compulsory music appreciation class. Have loved classical music ever since. This, the Piano Concerto No. 5, and Handel's Messiah are the cat's meow.
Ah I love hearing these types of stories!
Music 🎶 is the food of the soul. 🤍✨
My daughter's 50th Birthday and Beethoven's 250th - never miss a day without listening to Beethoven!
One if not the best performance of 5th Symphony i've ever seen.
What makes this performance better then others?
@@DutchmanAmsterdam Well, not rushing the third movement alone makes it better than 99% of other recordings. It's a shame that the audio quality isn't the best
Wow! the sound! Fantastic orchestra and conductor!!!
What a grand, majestic, beautiful, and spectacular symphony. The first movement is powerful and recognizable across the world. The second movement is beautiful and breathtaking. The third movement is playful and joyful. The fourth movement is a fitting end to a great symphony. A fabulous symphony. Great from start to finish.
I’m at tears . This was simply beautiful. Unity at its finest . I don’t even listen to classical music ..
You should listen to more then. There are works far more beautiful than this, trust me.
You should keep listening to it, its relaxing and at the same time energetic. Classical music has it all
I'm from Rio de Janeiro .
Concertgebown , nominated the best Classic Music Orchestra of the World.
O have been in Amsterdam one year ago , visited the Orchestra Hall and watched a Concert .

Echt erstklassig!
1st movement 00:00
2nd movement 07:49
3rd movement 18:25
4th movement 23:59
Thank you for this important info.
Magnificent. Like so much of the music that Bee5thoven blessed us with this is just beautiful, and here we listen to a masterful rendition.
When I think of Concertgebouworkest, I think of warmth and clarity
Can you imagine what audiences 200 years ago thought when this music was being played? I never tire of the 5th especially when played by professionals like Fischer and the RCO. Just fabulous!
The audience 200 years ago heard this performed way much slower: twice as slow!
The audiences back then didn't like it.
@@detectivehome3318 Not exactly true.

@@euhdink4501 ohhh noooooo, a Wim follower? Please say your kidding!
Go back in time and tell Beethoven that one day he can bring his orchestra and music to our homes. Genius, still enjoy it, after almost 200 years. This orchestra is awesome, filming is spot on.
This was the first classical piece I learned about many years ago. They do it so magnificently. .😊
somewhat soft yet intense. What is really amazing though is how he challenge everyone to that pacing. Magnificent version.
If you can use one word to describe Beethoven's music, what would it be? -------- FIRE!
The buring passion of life, humanity and freedom!
💕
hell ya brother
Another great performance of one of my favorite pieces of music by my favorite composer.
Magnifico 👍
Concerto 🎺 musica 🎶 per l'anima e per l'eternità. 🌬️👏👏👏👏👏💐💐💐
Probably the best performance of the 5th available on the video channels. For whomever is interested, there are some interviews of Maestro Fischer discussing his love and knowledge of Beethoven music.
The hj-def. adds much: mor visual precision equals more aural precision (for me,anyway)
God bless Ludwig, wherever he is!!
Beethoven the Great.
The symphonists who precede, announce him ; those who follow, cannot join him... That's all.
Beethoven the Unique.
One of the best renditions of this glorious symphony I’ve ever heard Thanks. April 20, 2024
I love Maestro Ivan Fisher's conducting. He is so feelingful
I think so!! His Beethoven is the best 😆
Hi when did this concert happen
Feelingful. Perfect description of the maestro.
Magnificent entrances by all. they just Land on the notes.... When ears are satisfied.
I already have Blu-ray sets of The Nine Symphonies by Thielemann (VPO) and Jansons (BRSO). I have now ordered the Blu-ray of this Fischer RCO set. From the RUclips videos it appears that the Fischer set is (surprisingly) the best of the lot. This 5th is energetic and propulsive and one of the best I have heard in awhile. Bravo to the mastro and the RCO!
I have the 1956 Karajan - Beethoven 9 Symphonies on vinyl on Deutsch Gramaphone .
BRAVO !!! Saludos desde España.
that was MAGNIFICENT
Music that is written for the freedom, liberation and brotherhood of mankind.
Spectacular ! I must say one of a kind 💖🏁 beethoven was smileing after he created that piece !🏁🏁🏁📯🏅🥂
Dank U.
Prachtig gezegd
Bravíssimo! Obrigado.
The best performance of Beethoven 5th symphony! Maestro Ivan fischer does an excellent job with this masterpiece!
Happy Birthday, Ludwig! 16 December 2022.

Yes!!!
This video recording is probably the best one of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 available. I love the second movement (Andante con moto) of this symphony. Unfortunately, I thought that the orchestra had a rough spot running from about 15:20 to about 15:35 in the that movement. Perhaps I am wrong and that it is the conductor's interpretation of the music at that point.
WOW!!!
If only this had received a CD release.. It's a regular on our youtube viewing and since I can download the youtube video to play anywhere I'm reasonably happy, but still wish I had a physical product of it.
Let us send a moment of compassion to the orchestra members. It takes nerve-work to be that attentive and tenaciously preactise towards perfection. Some of them do not look happy, I wonder how they are? Peace, Love and joy to them!
Ahhh THE 4th movement use to be my wake up music those were the days
I like this music.
Yes is nice to hear and also I like Beethoven symphony nr. 9 too is also
Beautiful.
I don't care about people saying classical music is boring and slow, this shit hits me like a punch in the face by Mike Tyson
Not for nothing is Beethoven regarded as the greatest of all the composers
ale mutasa: Are they not bored because desensitized, shut off from subtleties from the nerve-attacks of modern, rock etc? Like the sugar-addict's lack of taste until (s)he livges sugar-free and the body heal to taste the whole real range of tastes? .
Always thank you for splendid music! I think your country ' The Netherlands ' to be a friend since 1600.
