Everytime in my life with uncertainties but with hope, I turn to this masterpiece. My most favorite symphony, not one of. Everytime I listen to it deeply, I feel the more grown up I am. In its first movement, I can't remember how many times the forceful outburst of emotion at 8:42, followed with the softened and kind expressions, has made me cry. That is always the moment I forget about myself, completely getting lost. I am always so thankful, as well, that I can pick up my own violin and play this tune, when I have the surge to express what is embedded deeply in the music. ❤

Don’t really know anything about music, other than my love for it. I can’t even begin to fathom how a person can create something so beautiful just with marks on a page. I imagine it must require such a knowledge and deep understanding of the inner mechanisms of music. Not to mention the depths of emotion he must’ve accessed to create something so stirring. And that is just creating it. The actual performing is a whole other thing, that is no less impressive. Ahh I’m so grateful for classical music and Tchaikovsky. It’s so beautiful.

The horn solo is played with such sensitivity and he really lets it just ooze out and the aching notes speak for themselves.

My Grandad was the big classical music aficionado in our family and made me a cassette of this symphony, and the 6th. Even though I didn't really 'get' the concert the first time, it was a bit too overwhelming, I did listen to the tape and got into it on the 3rd or 4th listen. @@ludo4961 I tend to agree, though Russian music is in the DNA of Yuri Temirkanov and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic to such an extent that to my ears few achieve what they can and do. Bernstein delivers a fine interpretation, but, again to my ear, misses what the Russians call 'iziuminka', the French a 'je ne sais quoi' that raises the hairs on the back of one's neck and elevates the performance beyond even the extraordinary. Claudio Abbado pushes the envelope like no other non-Russian. Now, I would be foolish to insist that Messrs Abbado and Temirkanov have a monopoly on interpreting this work. Isn't it of paramount importance that whoever's conducting whichever orchestra give the listener a transcendent(al) experience? Everything he does seems to be calculated to have an effect on the sound (or some other aspect of the performance) without any unnecessary movements.
