There are so many recordings of this symphony, but in this one, I hear a freshness, a very unique way of playing that makes the piece even more understandable and interesting. Bravo I TEMPI and Gevorg Gharabekyan!
Als regelmäßiger Hörer und Besucher von I-Tempi-Konzerten, ihren einzigartigen Klangprojekten, weiß ich, ich werde nie enttäuscht. Gerade steht das Konzert „Musik der Sehnsucht“ vor der Tür. Ich werde absolut zuversichtlich hingehen. Das letzte Konzert der berühmten 5. Symphonie von Beethoven ist mir in äußerst lebendiger Erinnerung: Welcher Ausdruck, welch auffallendes Pulsieren wird in dieser sagenhaften Motivik angesetzt in diesem mächtigen Orchester! Wie ist mir der erste Satz geläufig, als hätte ich Studium in ihm betrieben! Welch ein geniales Meisterwerk! Dieser klingende, orchestrale Kraftakt haut mich gerade aus den Socken (und den Schuhen)! Beflissen, dass auch ich genügend dabei bleibe - wie werde ich dadurch belohnt! Der zweite Satz verkündet mir einmal mehr: Beethoven ist und bleibt einer meiner großen Herzensbrecher. Mögen diese, seine Töne hier lange anhalten. In den folgenden Sätzen erklimmt das kraftvolle Pulsieren, das stramme Taktieren erneut die vielen Höhen. Wobei, ich muss gestehen, hier kommt es mir wie Neuland vor. Furchtbar. War ich so selten dabei, als auch diese Sätze gespielt wurden? An der Energie geladenen Live-Interpretation von I Tempi liegt es keinesfalls. Ich bleibe als Hörer über meinen Schuhen schwebend. Jedoch die weiteren musikalischen Ideen von Beethoven scheinen mir nicht so glanzvoll einzigartig zu sein, wie die des genial, berühmt gewordenen 1. Satzes. Das tosende Spektakel zum Ende hin im 4. Satz, wenn auch in äußerst kunstvollem, verdichteten 5-1, 5-1, hält meinen Atem an, oben, doch mit dem schließlich definitiven, bombastischen Schluss von Beethovens 5. stecke ich wieder fest in meinen Schuhen (und den Socken). I Tempi, welch vitales Orchester! Ich verneige mich. Wie ergreift mich dieses gewaltige Tonspektakel, ebenso die Bilder - auf You-Tube auch in meiner eigenen Stube! Rolf Krieger

I adhere to the tempos indicated by Beethoven with metronome numbers, which are quite fast but make a lot of sense. However, Otto Klemperer's recording from 1968 with the Vienna Philharmonic is noticeably slower than Beethoven's metronome markings. Is there perhaps another recording you have in mind? Regarding the oboist's vibrato, are you referring to her beautiful solo in the 1st movement around the 4:50 minute mark? It's the only part in the first movement where Beethoven writes "adagio." Therefore, it's meant to be a solemn and improvisational-sounding solo, conveying a kind of meditative reflection as well as lamentation. In this context, she uses vibrato purposefully as an expressive device, and I believe it fits well.
@@Gharabekyan Thank you for your reply, which is persuasive. I understood the reason for the beautiful vibrato with the Oboe! The Klemperer's 1968 recording with VPO was when he was 82. However, his 1955 mono recording with the Philharmonia Orchestra or his 1951 VOX recording with VSO may better represent his tempo. His balance of tempo between the movements is more important than the absolute tempo, IMHO. Compared to other historical conductors such as Furtwangler and Walter, Klemperer played Allegro and Scherzo more slowly while playing slow movements more quickly (so his playing was called Sachlich). Thus, if I describe it more correctly, your balance of tempo between the Beethoven 5 movements reminded me of his balance.

In essence, I have attempted to follow Beethoven's metronome markings here, seeking to understand the dramaturgy of the entire piece. The brisk tempos impart a sense of restlessness and concern to the first three movements, emphasizing the agitated quest for redemption. Only in the fourth movement does the major key emerge, expressing a triumph over evil. I appreciate your thoughts and your attention to detail!
