Mozart: Symphony No. 41 Jupiter | Hartmut Haenchen & Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Chamber Orchestra

  • It is a masterly interpretation of a divine symphony: The Jupiter Symphony (Symphony No. 41 in C major, K. 551) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, played here by the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Chamber Orchestra conducted by Hartmut Haenchen. The symphonic classic was performed at the Konzerthaus Berlin in 2005 as part of a Mozart evening. What is special about this particular interpretation is the reduced size of the ensemble, as a result of which the diverse characteristics of Mozart’s symphony vividly emerge.
    (00:00) I. Allegro vivace
    (11:15) II. Andante cantabile
    (19:13) III. Menuetto. Allegretto-Trio
    (22:53) IV. Finale. Molto allegro
Symphony No. 41 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791) only posthumously received the emblematic epithet ‘Jupiter’. The name started to appear in concert programs in England more than 30 years after its composition and was considered so fitting that soon people spoke only of Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony. The combination of the supreme Roman god Jupiter with Mozart’s radiant and clear musical language is considered an excellent fit to this day.
Mozart completed the composition of his Symphony in C major in August 1788. Depending on how they are counted, it is the last of Mozart’s 41 symphonies. Its genesis is connected with two other symphonies: Mozart had written three symphonies of very different character in just six weeks in the summer of 1788. While Mozart himself actually saw himself as an opera composer, he had probably only composed the symphonies because he once again needed money for his less than modest lifestyle. It is all the more astonishing that all three symphonies are still among the highlights of classical music today, and the Jupiter Symphony in particular is considered the pinnacle of Mozart’s instrumental music. Mozart’s perfectly formed and at the same time playful handling of the themes is universally admired, and the clarity of the structure is regarded as the epitome of musical beauty.
The final movement of the 41st Symphony is unusual in that its outward form reveals a sonata scheme with exposition, development, recapitulation and coda, but its inner structure is a fugue with five themes. The themes each have a very different character, so that their mutual interplay seems like a comedic performance. Because of the dense counterpoint of the fourth movement, Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 has even been called the ‘symphony with the final fugue’.

Weird story, but the internet is anonymous so I’ll share.
A couple months ago I went through a rough alcohol withdrawal, and my brain was on overdrive for a few days. This first movement was stuck in my head relentlessly during this time. One night, I couldn’t sleep and had a hallucination/dream-like state that I was hearing this piece loud, bright, and clear as if through headphones. I picked up so many details I had never heard before,l and felt an intense elation, blown away by what a genius Mozart was and soaking in every bit of this first movement. The rest of the night was far less pleasant than that but I fell in love and have been listening to this over and over again ever since.
Anyways I’m 37 days sober now with no plans to go back. I’m at this comment section often so I figured I’d leave this little story here. ❤

Der zweite Satz klingt echt schön und auch melodisch. Im Kontrast klingt der dritte Satz echt rhythmisch und auch lebhaft. Jupiter and the fortieth symphony are the most mature of all of Mozart's works ( beside his Operas ) , yet we do not miss the clear and limpid spirit, an unparalleled character in Mozart. 😍

    • @somethingtojenga
      @somethingtojenga 2 года назад +2

lol 'most mature' of Mozart's music isn't saying much, tbh. Guy took advantage of the most formulaic period in music history to seem like a genius to rich people, sucked up to rich people most of his life, and it got him buried in a mass unmarked grave with barely anyone there. Beethoven labored and toiled over the emotional journey of his music, had real emotional struggles in his life unlike Mozart who was a spoiled brat baby up to the end, exceeded Mozart in every way to bring music into a new era of expression, and it shows. I don't want music to roll over me like a candy coating like this BS--it needs to hit hard or don't bother. Mozart could write 10 symphonies like this every single day and not a single one would matter that much. Overrated.

There is everything to like in this work but for me, my favorite parts are in the second fiddles at the beginning of the minuet and that last part beginning at 28:15. If I'm not mistaken, Mozart even wrote something about his being proud in his ability to combine all five themes at the end. Very clever.

(I cannot make this feeling right in English. I beg your pardon. )

What a gorgeous venue. We here in Toronto have to put up with a cement toilet bowl where the members of the orchestra can't hear each other.

One of the finest interpretations of Mozart’s 41st symphony I’ve heard and seen performed!

For this great symphony, there are only three celli , two double basses, one flute In the orchestra, and just enough violins and violas not to overpower the flute, oboes and bassoons. This chamber sound, I imagine, is much closer to what Mozart wanted to hear. The Berlin orchestra plays magnificently, rhythmically, and we hear things that usually get lost when this piece is played as by a larger symphonic ensemble. A revelation!

Excellent interpretation. It is informed, so to speak, by the "period" movement, but without the excesses we often find in many other representatives of that movement.

As is almost always the case with Mozart, the Andante is my favorite but what an incredible symphony in-total. The final movement has the energy of a fireworks show; it establishes the different themes in a seamless procession, then combines them all in the face-melting 5 part fugue finale. Simply incredible. Mozart always thought of himself as an opera composer and symphonies were something he did to pay the bills, but his last three symphonies (39, 40, 41) are so good that they tantalize us with the question of what he could have done if he lived longer. God's Will be done. And I'll also note that Mozart was a man of God and he might not have appreciated the 41st Symphony acquiring the "Jupiter" moniker after he died, he would probably disapprove of the paganism and idolatry behind it.

Mozart was a freemason. Jupiter is definitely part of the knowledge he studied.

No te creas ,Mozart era un libre pensador ; trabajo con las iglesias como profesional pero estaba en sus antípodas ; no obstante lo que más quería era a Dios divino ..!
