Just wow. Love this piece after hearing it in Excalibur. Usually a baroque music fan but this introduced me to Wagner. This version is stunning. It has so much intensity, colour and depth. Klaus Tennstadt is a revelation and the emotion adds so much. Not just listening to it but feeling it too.
I concur with all that is said here: I had the privilege to be present at many of his concerts in London when he was alive. The memory of these, and the power and excitement he got from the orchestra will something I will remember forever. Open Champagne and play this on my 30th birthday. I was telling my friend that Tennstedt and the LPO are celebrating my birthday at 6:45. I love Tennstedt and his Wagner. His Mahler 1st is also the best.
Yes! It's all too easy to gallop through the overture -- Tennstedt restrains the pace and brings out the internal tensions of what's to come. Splendid.
Many people that are not musicians do not realize that an ORCHESTRA is simply a huge instrument (like an organ) and the Conductor is the artist...the player if you will. This is why Conductors are known to be testy...it is like having a key out of tune is one of the members of the instrument isn't playing it the way the conductor wants it. You can't have independence in the instrument.
What makes this music so powerful is the raw force with which it describes the life and inner world of a failed hero: internal struggles, hubris, regret and forgiveness, mercy, and pure, holy, innocent beauty. Themes which life must have deeply taught to Tennstedt.
Doggone it! I'm a teacher in Japan and 32 years late too get to get to this performance which was just down the road from me. Thank you for posting it. It's the next best thing to being there.
Heavens, how I miss this very great conductor. I miss him very badly. He was exceptional, and got a sound from the orchestra unlike another other. I heard him many times, and treasure fond memories.
RIP
OMG.... one can only imagine what a Tennstedt interpretation of Tristan and Isolde would have achieved. Fortunately based on this performance one can come close. His Mahler performances are some consolation.
Claro, lento, majestuoso y profundo. La música de Wagner es música imperial.
This is a marvelous rendition of a marvelous piece of magic... Wagner is unique in the world of classical music. After centuries from now, people will still listen to his amazing music. they will wonder and say: how could people compose such a music? what did inspire them?
This is in Tokyo. In London, the LPO and Klaus Tennstedt gave many concerts at the Royal Festival Hall in the 80s. I was working nearby and saw quite a few. I saw Klaus conduct a concert at the Proms too. There's not much of him on video - pleased to see this here.
I don't know a damn thing about music but I know "Genius" when I see it, and this Conductor is truly devoted to his craft as are the members of the orchestra....I find this to be a genuine expression of musical interpretation that's shared with us all....and for that I'm grateful!
Yes, WAGNER is the genius...for without the composer.... the orchestra and conductor wont have any music to play. Unless the conductor can compose as good as Wagner (or has composing talent at all), then it's different.
Wagner, Tennstedt, London Symphony, Concert Master all magnificent! My favourite classic music piece ever. I listen to it almost every day. It is so beautiful and uplifting!
I hope that when it is your time to go from this realm into the next , there is someone there who will play this as a recording or maybe hire a whole orchestra to play this ... what an awesome send off that would be! I sincerely hope that can happen for you when it is your time :-)
I remember my first introduction to this great overture - played on a Decca LP by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Hans Knapperbusch (spelling?). The experience still thrills me to this day.
What a privilege to be able to watch this whenever one has the time and inclination. It would be one of my desert island discs, that's for sure! Thanks for the upload.😄
I grew up listening to Wagner conducted by Karajan, and I loved it... until I heard this amazing concert! I am now a fan of Klaus Tennstedt and the London Philarmonic.
Feeling sad that I've not been able to attend this marvelous concert in Japan back then but then enchanted on the other hand that I'm given the opportunity to hear and see this over and over again on RUclips. Don't you ever delete these signature renditions of Wagner's works by Tennstedt and the RLPO. These are definitely unmatched ever since.
WOW! The "Bacchanale" was like a music coming from the heavens. First; it gave me goosebumps. And then I was up there-free and worry-less.... Didn't even care about paying the bills which are next to me on the table! 😄
Bravo Tennstedt ! 👏👏👏👏
If you're going to listen to Wagner, be sure to listen to anything conducted by the inspirational Klaus Tennstedt. Of all the various performances and interpretations, only those by Maestro Tennstedt embody the original majestic vision of Wagner. His timing is counter intuitive, but absolutely impeccable.

I've never heard this overture this way before; that I had no idea how so many conductors leave so much out, since when I saw that it would be more that 24 minutes…well all I could think is that the Tennstedt version would be a much slower tempo, only to discover that Wagner had composed so much more, but that so many of our more illustrious conductors chose to edit out so much…Thank you for posting the ACTUAL overture…and many thanks to the late, lamented Maestro Tennstedt for this…Thank You!!….
This is the Paris version. Wagner significantly changed the opera in an attempt to make it palatable to the French opera-goers. He failed, partly because of some very rude members of Parisian society who saw to the opera's failure. In any case, you've probably been hearing the Dresden version of the overture, which is roughly 15 minutes long.
@@geoffwhitemusic : That assessment seems to be correct--- there are two radically different versions of the overture, with the Paris version organically connected to the following Venusberg music, whereas the more commonly-programmed Dresden version (as an orchestral violinist and violist, i have had to labour through the Dresden version three or four times but have never been called upon to play the Paris version...) ends loudly and triumphantly without said Venusberg "stuff". The loud ending, which by comparison with Tennstedt's choice here is somewhat more brief, probably explains its much greater popularity....
@@jimcrawford5039 Actually Karajan has two periods, the early, innovative, young turk breaking paradigms and bringing fresh air to symphonic performances and the late pretentious, infatuated, tiranic demigod of the millions dollars performances, hated and feared by *_his_* (as of property) "employees". One is the Karajan of the vinyl 9 symphonies a very different (aged and capricious) one of the CD album. I own and repeatedly listen to both. Karajan died in the 70's; his ghost took over. 🤔
We need more innovation in arrangement and conducting of classics like Wagner's operas, instead of the insufferable focus on scenic design and woke costumes that's become the norm. Karajan's Wagner is alright but nothing special. Give me this over his interpretation any day, and they can put the singers in trash bags for all I care.

Heavens, how I miss this very great conductor. I miss him very badly. He was exceptional, and got a sound from the orchestra unlike another other. I heard him many times, and treasure fond memories.
Wagner finally sounded as Wagner!
Perfect tempo. Superb conductor. Amazing orchestra.
RIP
OMG.... one can only imagine what a Tennstedt interpretation of Tristan and Isolde would have achieved.

Tennstedt is great conductor .London Phil is great orchestra, too.Thank you very much for wonderful music.
Stunning, beautifully evocative performance!
Stellar conducting, amazing orchestra !
Come poteva un uomo così spregevole comporre musica così ? Immobile all amore alla vita al sogno !!!!
This is the music that will transcend me from this world to the next when I have finally completed my cycle on earth
Wagner, Tennstedt, London Symphony, Concert Master all magnificent! My favourite classic music piece ever. I listen to it almost every day. It is so beautiful and uplifting!
me too.
I hope that when it is your time to go from this realm into the next , there is someone there who will play this as a recording or maybe hire a whole orchestra to play this ... what an awesome send off that would be! I sincerely hope that can happen for you when it is your time :-)
If only had 25minutes left to live this would be what I’d love to hear just before the big sleep.
One of my favorite Overtures.
I remember my first introduction to this great overture - played on a Decca LP by the
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Hans Knapperbusch (spelling?). The
experience still thrills me to this day.
Sublime. Muchas gracias.
Orquesta excepcional. Director superlativo.
This wonderful performance delights my soul.

I've listened to numerous recordings. This, to me, is sublime. Thank you, Klaus. Xx
Amazing performance! Wagner was a genius.
Wagner was idiot
This is the most incredible and fascinating thing I ever heard. How can a human compose something like this? I simply cannot understand.
Perhaps my favorite work besides the 9th and his Ring So beautiful
The correct pace.. Brilliant!
6:48 look at him, fencing through wagner like an absolute gentleman
fantastica esecuzione, bravo klaus, WIVA WAGNER
Heute, an seinem 208.
excellent sound quality for a youtube upload. This was great work.
Absolutely gorgeous!
I agree a magnificent performance.
Superb conducting.
My absolute favourite version! Perfect tempo and truly deep expression!
Tennstedt and the orchestra are on fire! - they give it all. Fantastic.
Of all the greats he was probably the greatest. The sheer musicality pours out of him.
WOW! The "Bacchanale" was like a music coming from the heavens. First; it gave me goosebumps. And then I was up there-free and worry-less.... Didn't even care about paying the bills which are next to me on the table! 😄
What a marvellous version!

Danke!
So no one has actually been editing anything. There are two radically different versions of the overture, that's all.
Geoff White
Thank You, Geoff....
Geoff White Thank you for the clarification. I was wondering.
Great work. Great performance. Thumbs up. Hats off...
Just so very moving
Only a German like Tennstedt can interpret Wagner like this. Not even the superb Deutsche Grammophon CD by Karajan has this brilliance and tempo.
Karajan was an overrated mass producer of records!
@@jorgemtrevinoWhat a bullshit. Karajan died in 1989.
Karajan is a 'hit and miss' conductor. But when he hits, it's really hard to beat his performance.
Splendida lucrare! Nu ma mai satur s-o ascult!
