0:00 Opening theme represents Napoleon advancing his way towards Moscow with a huge army size and devastating weapons. The Russians gathered in churches across the country and prayed. This is represented through the hymn that is played in the beginning.
2:17 The tension rises and it could be heard in the ascending base notes as France gets ever so close to Moscow. In addition, the continuous 16th (not sure, might be 32nd) notes in the background really drives this section foward. The 16th notes represents the distressed Russians rushing to churches to pray and rushing home to be safe.
3:44 The first battle between Russia and France is getting ready to take place as the snare drums are used to keep the marching tempo. The melodies are kind of like the calm before the storm.
    4:46 The battle actual starts
6:12 The French national anthem is played to represent how they overwhelmed the Russians and won early vicotires. In the next 6 minutes, the two countries start fighting and as more Russians come out of their homes to fight for their country, Russian melodies become more and more prominent as the French anthem and Russian melodlies go back and forth.
8:10 The folk melody "At the gate, at my gate" is heard. The name is pretty self explanatory :)
9:59 French anthem heard once again
11:10 Once again, "At the gate, at my gate" is heard.
11:30 Notice that after everytime this melody is played (5:24 and 9:03), the French anthem is played right after to show how they are victors in battle. This time however, this is not the case and the melody goes straight into... -->
--> ... 12:01. This signifies the turning point of the war where the French start to lost their stronghold and grip against the Russians. The name of the conflict is the Battle of Borodino. This is marked by 5 cannons blasts.
12:16 The descending line marks the French retreat
12:55 The victory celebration is represented through 11 cannon blasts and bells ringing in the background. The melody is an iteration of 'O Lord, Save Thy People'
If someone can tell me what's going on at 6:39 that'll be great because it is such a beautiful phrase.

This brings me back to my childhood. My mother had one of those big stereos with 3 foot speakers. I remember she made me sit and listen to this and listen to the cannons in particular and she'd be so hype. In hindsight, this gave her strength, you could see how much she loved this. My mother passed away last year and listening to this is really taking me back. I can see her standing in the living room with this playing so loud with the bright sun coning in the window as she's using her arms like she was directing the piece Her facial expressions are pure joy. Now over 30 years later, listening to this gives me a similar joy because of those memories.

In 1970, at age 18, I made my first trip to Europe. On a warm, sunny Sunday afternoon in June, the London Philharmonic Orchestra played the entire suite in Hyde Park, with actual cannons. There's no one like the British when it comes to pomp and circumstance, and boy, did they! There was some sort of a Royal Guard on horseback, parading around the Park. It was a sight and sound I'll never forget....this Waco girl was struck speechless....and that's saying something. Simply one of the greatest pieces of classical music EVER...

The sad part is that this piece was never truly performed according to the sheets until the mid 20th Century. Tchaikovsky was commissioned to make this celebratory piece for the grand opening of Moscow’s Cathedral, which was erected in honor of the victory during the Napoleonic Wars, it had been in construction for a long time and was finally ready for the grand opening. Cannons were set to fire to signify the Battle of Borodino, and then the Russian Victory, as church bells all over Moscow were to play following the piece. Sadly, shortly before the event Tzar Alexander was assassinated, and so all events were called off, so the piece did not premiere. In 1881 Tchaikovsky was invited to direct this piece at the Carnegie Hall in New York, but no cannons, and no church bells were used. Tchaikovsky died without ever hearing a propper performance of this piece. This however never bothered him. He never actually liked it, regarding it as noisy and exaggerated, not as refined and ellegant as he’d like.

It's crazy to think about that Tchaikovsky never heard the version he wrote on paper. It's also a bit sad, becuase there was so much preparation for than moment and it never happened. He liked it though, so I guess there was really no problem.

It wasn't until 74 years after this piece was first composed that the cannon fire and church bells were played in sync to the rest of the music. Since it was almost impossible to sync up cannons firing and church bells with the rest of the orchestra. In 1954, composer Antal Doráti mixed a studio recording with the sounds of cannons and bells properly synced up the way the piece finally intended. It was the first time since the writing of this piece that the music was finally heard as it was intended to.
The reason it was so difficult to do it live was because so many factors like fuse length, type of fuse, where the fuse is lit from, amount of powder in the cannon etc. that determines the delay from lighting to firing a cannon, and church bells are on very long, but variably long ropes and the bells are of different sizes, different types, have different ringing mechanisms and there are different techniques to ringing a church bell which makes it extremely difficult to ring church bells or fire cannons with the precision needed for an orchestra.
It was written in 1880, but no one heard how it was supposed to sound until 1954. It's unfortunate that Tchaikovsky wasn't able to hear it, but apparently he hated the 1812 overture.

Yes. It was to be performed with cannons at its debut in 1881 but Tzar Alexander II was assassinated and plans were changed. They were meant to use the bells of the new cathedral and an electric switchboard to sync the cannons but after the Tzars death, construction of the cathedral was postponed and the performance was delayed until 1882. In 1882 at the performance, the electric switchboard had not been installed as they could not secure the cannons, the brass band was cancelled and the cathedral was not finished, which did not allow for the bells to be used either. Tchaikovsky was not a fan of the piece to begin with and was annoyed that he had been chosen to compose it and was even more annoyed when some of the most important aspects of it were not present.

He always heard it. In his mind, all sounds existed in perfect synchrony as he had envisioned, regardless of the materialization of them.
It was us who never really got to truly hear them. Right now we might have an aproximation of his vision, but nothing more :)

I was listening to this in my office while working. I was wearing headphones, of course. When the cannons started blowing full force, my office mate turned and looked at me with an astonished look on his face: “…the heck are you listening to?”. And the volume wasn’t even this high or my eardrums would have been destroyed, but he still heard the freaking cannons 😂
