- Multi-award-winning conductor Bernard Haitink leads the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. They perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Haffner Symphony.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed the Symphony No. 35 in D major, K. 385, known as the Haffner Symphony, in 1782. As early as 1776 he had been commissioned to compose a serenade for the wedding of the Salzburg bridal couple Franz Xaver Späth and Maria Elisabeth Haffner, the daughter of Salzburg's mayor Sigmund Haffner. The Haffner Serenade is Mozart's most extensive serenade (KV 250) and has eight movements.
Six years later, he was to compose another serenade on the occasion of the award of the title of nobility "Edler von Innbachhausen" to Sigmund Haffner Junior. Mozart arranged it as a symphony by omitting the movements 2 to 4 or 5 of the serenade composed for Haffner's wedding, thus creating an independent work.
Bernard Haitink began his conducting career with Netherlands Radio: he became chief conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic in 1957. Later he was principal conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and held this position for 27 years. Today he is patron of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Honorary Conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Bernard Haitink has also been Music Director of the Glyndebourne Festival and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and Chief Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He is an honorary member of the Berlin Philharmonic, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and since 2019, the Vienna Philharmonic. He has received numerous prizes and awards, including the Gramophone Lifetime Achievement Award.

Imagine living 230 years ago. We wouldn’t be able to listen to any composition any time we want on RUclips. But we would be able to see Mozart live. Worth it.
Only if you were part of the aristocracy.
Or part of the prchestra
Piano street hustlers selling their transcriptions to eager pianist's play! This perhaps how the masses heard Morzart back in the day.
Oh how jolly good it all was in the 18th century! C'mon how much disney flicks did you watch blind of criticism? I'm mostly happy with our time, actually I'm not, our time is as rubbish as any other one, but it definetely has its pros that we can listen to so many great music when we want, not just RUclips, also CDs, you are being blindly nostalgic I think. It probably would have been interesting to meet a character like WAM, but I am more than happy to also know the music of romantic, impressionist, expressionist, modern composers and also some rock and jazz and else great music.
RIP dear maestro Bernard Haitink! His Mozart was so special but has never got the attention it deserves.
When I cry a lot, when I get very confused, when words overlap, I listen to Mozart.
You poor thing...
There's a divine order and uplift in his music ;I agree. :-)
RIP Bernard Haitink 1929-2021
It's not that I'm shocked - he lived 92 years in this life. I'm very saddened to hear of his passing though. Haitink was one of the greatest conductors of our age and a true ambassador of his art. Humble and faithful to the music in every situation, his sober and revealing visions of such a wide range of repertoire has left us with a rich recorded legacy of some of the greatest reference recordings, made with the greatest orcheatras in the world. And that's without even touching on his eminently distinguished career with the great Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam.
Since the very beginning of my journey with orchestral music, my record collection has gotten steadily more littered with Haitink readings. Despite his notable absence of flamboyance or histrionics - dare I say ego, even - with Haitink, you can safely go for absolutely ANY of his recordings, without ANY hesitation or need for prior research or reviews, and rest assured in the knowledge that you'll ALWAYS be presented with an outstanding, emotionally intelligent and profound rendition of whatever that piece may be. There's not many conductors in that bracket. I was just lucky enough to catch Haitink live a couple of times, including a stunning Bruckner 6th symphony with the Dresden Staatskapelle. I'm very sad to hear he has left us.
why is it in Classical Music they are called Conductors...in R&B, Pop Music, and even Jazz. they are called Bandleaders???
@@mysticakhenaton1701 orchestral leaders were called conductors long before there was any such thing as jazz. The truer question is why aren't band leaders called conductors?
Rest In Peace, Maestro Haitink. Thanks for many great concerts with the CSO.
Thirty years ago or so in the UK the BBC would broadcast the Concertgebouw's Christmas Day concert live with Bernard Haitink conducting, it was a highlight of my Christmas Day.
One of the Titans of conducting.... sorely missed. An old guard passing: when Mehta, Muti, Blomstedt are gone then an era will have ended (may they have many more years).
Happy birthday Mozart, 266 today. And thank you Mr Haitink, a musician able to do justice to the incomparable Wolfgang Amadeus.
Listening to classical music is like embarking on a journey through the epochs, where the melodies become portals to the emotions of bygone eras. 🚀🎶
No, they are entirely contemporary emotions, that is why we want to hear this music again and again: it speaks to US. Music is not locked-up within a historic cubicle, but is born again with every performance.
@@JohnBorstlap YES.
My friends and I used to listen to recordings of Maestro Haitink and his orchestra back in 1977 when I was a music student at Northwestern Music School. What an amazing run he had!
He had known this orchestra, the hall, the audience longer than most people have been alive and it sounds like it!
RIP maestro, you were a great one. What a long live of music you gave us, even though it was for 92 years, your legacy will remain for immeasurable years to come, thank you.
This music makes me proud to be a human being. I love Mozart’s music. It’s beautiful when it’s joyful or sorrowful. And it always makes sense. It’s like a language without words.
I was captured by the Haffner Symphony when I was around 12 or 13 in about 1957 and I especially remember being completely enthralled listening for the first time to an LP sent to our house that was sent in the post by the World Record Club of the London Philharmonic Orchestra playing Mozart, conducted by Erich Leinsdorf. Each month I was always excited to receive the next classical offering. As a result, I became totally hooked on Classical music that has remained with me all my life. I went on to learn to play the piano (badly), but always derived great pleasure and solace from classical music. I’ve always been very grateful to my mother who subscribed our family to the World Record Club that first introduced me to the wonderful world of Classical music.
Lovely!
@@RC-bh3uz I’m 77 and still love Mozart amongst other’s, I couldn’t imagine life without appreciating classical music.
What a wonderful story! Thank you for sharing it with us!
Mozart is the human lullaby and comfort .
A privilege to see Bernard Haitink conduct Mozart. I love the way he conducts with minimalism yet precision.
One of the greatest conductors of a great orchestra playing this great symphony by Mozart, beautifully
A giant among conductors

@Aidi Bao: Sorry, Menuetto😊
!
May his legacy live on through the musicianship of thousands. You have made a significant impact on our world, Maestro. It will not be the same without you.
the genius of mozart just melts my heart
In the hands of maestro Haitink and (t)his orchestra Mozart's Haffner Symphony sounds if it was composed yesterday. BRAVO!
Bravo! Haitink, Gentle man in a classic music.
A living legend conducts one of the world’s greatest orchestras.
I interned and studied under von Karajan. To me he is and remains the greatest I learned a lot in the four years I was there!
Sorry, we don't have any videos with Herbert von Karajan on our channel. Nevertheless, please stay connected to DW Classical Music!

First movement of this was in my head when I came back from running the other night. Outstanding work. Beautiful.
R.I.P. Maestro Haitink, the best reason for you fans to reunite for another tribute concert. Such performances are posted straight to my heart, please do not hate me that sometimes l prefer to connect people instead, being focused on those who are not yet your fans, those who have no idea that they might need classical music to caress their wounded hearts.
Great symphony by Mozart. Bernard Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw- always a winning combination. Always a joy to listen to this orchestra.
Agreed!
Bethoven was a MOOR/a Black person of Afrikan Ancestry.
@@mysticakhenaton1701 Beethoven was a gender-neutral, both Jewish and coulered Marx-adept, who was everything but a white supremecist.....
Perfect conductor;Perfect orchestra.Beautiful performance.
I will miss Herr Haitink. He was the baton of the Netherlands. And the rest of the world.
GRACIAS !!! Saludos desde España.
Composed for my family Such a musical honour.
Nothing is more telling about what music does to people than the eyes of the 90-year-old Haitink
Perhaps the 80-year-old Haitink? I believe this video is from the concert of 12 March 2009, which was in celebration of his 80th birthday.
This orchestra is, to my mind, the best in Europe and they and Haitink together were fantastic and in company with Mozart, superb.
Thank you, DW Classical Music, for this upload! Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw never fail to delight. I'm glad to have another music channel to explore...
Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw are always a pleasure
Everytime I listen to the 2nd moviment I remember when I was travelling to Salzburg from Vienna by train... 😍
What an elegant, insightful conductor was Bernard Haitink conducting Mozart! Certainly his gestures were minimalist, yet perfectly expressive. In his very presence he conveyed a lifetime of music.
Berard Haitink: Art of to conduct!
Danke! (Dr. Peter Pankoff, Bremen)
What a lukewarm applause after such a lively & spirited finale. As if the listeners were waking-up from a comatose slumber. Conventional, bourgeois audience, spoiled and not knowing what they are hearing.
This symphony is a masterpiece and the performance is ideal, quite an achievement with a modern orchestra: well-balanced, combining elegance with utter expressiveness, Haitink at his best.
Thanks for sharing your opinion.
Mozart + Concertgebow Orchestra + Haitink = superb.
It may not be Mozart's greatest symphony but it's my favourite, and Bernard Haitink had as extraordinary ability to make any music sound as if it were playing itself without any intervention on his part.
I like the oboe guy when his cheeks puff out, hehe
Yes because the greatest is the 41. Not only the greatest symphony, but the greatest music over all.
@@laurenth7187 ....Please...as Shakespeare remarks in MSND, "...comparisons are odorous...":
Don't use the word 'greatest'. Because it limits your intelligence to a glass jar. How can you compare things that are in different categories?
I am captured by the par excellence harmonious superior quality and beauty and rhythm of this superb rendition of outstanding music.
I just love his way to conduct!
Haitink has prepared the orchestra so thoroughly it seems he is doing nothing but marking time. Greatness can be deceptive.
One of Europe's greatest orchestras in one of its greatest concert halls.
Playing one of the greatest composers' greatest symphonies.
Such a loss your great musicianship and humility will be missed thanks for the wonderful recordings you did etc
👍
The Haffner Mozart's symphony played to the highest level of excellency. As a matter of fact, I love this Master Piece even more than Jupiter, though the latter is considered the greatest of Wolfgang grand orchestra piece.
Maestro Haitink and this wonderful Concertgebow orchestra interpretates it the precise way it must be!!
Thanks!!
I second that!
A grand composition and a great conductor. Thanks!
My favorite Mozart symphony ‼️ 🤗🎶💜
One of my favourite Mozart symphonies, and this is just a beautiful, relaxing performance..I were on a short break in Amsterdam, many years ago, and were fortunate to hear them rehearse Shostakovich, with Rhozdenventsky,in an open rehearsal, in this hall, then a year or two later, the orchestra came to Manchester, with I think Ashlenazy...I also had the privilege of meeting Bernard Haitink, again in Manchester, after a concert,,and his warmth, and time for those who waited to chat, and have items signed was so wondeful to witness..a very quietly spoken man.I have always been an admirer of his work, and this video just brings back memories of not only my visit to Amsterdam, but meeting such a well-respected figure in the musical world at a hall where I attend most of my concerts...
👍
Lucky you, Lawrence.
@@jackarcher7495 Very fond memories, and also met Ashkenazy a few times, once in London and a few times in Manchester at the Bridgewater hall..but being in the Concertgebouw, was a magic moment for me..
Presto is so incredibly impressive. The bow control the string players have is unfathomable to me, but seeing as I am still only 14 I guess I have time to practice, and hopefully one day be as skilled as these players
Keep the faith in yourself!
It is sublime beyond all words. Blessings to you!
World best music symphony orchestra my favourite orchestra symphony orchestra mind relaxed heart touching excellent recording super sound effect thank you Dw clasical music

Mozart. The greatest composer who ever lived on this earth

Maestro Haitink, one of the greatest of all time. His Mozart 35 recording presented here is Glorioso Profundis Extremeis Im Perpetuum
We're glad you enjoyed it. Make sure to follow us for the latest uploads.
I remember playing this Symphony no. 35 as a young high school kid with one of the many great orchestras in Chicago.
I still that Mozart was a master composer for all sections of the orchestra. As a woodwind player (oboist) I always found myself deeply moved by Mozart's brilliance and mastery for the woodwind section. Whether I listen to Marriage of Figaro, Impresario or countless other works, Mozart reigns supreme! Always delightful to hear and play.
Thank you...a delight! and my first experience of Maestro Haitink's conducting skills - superlative to witness, along with the warm smiles of his presence. Fondest wishes to his family in their loss.
I remembered what I said to the Concertgebouw before. The ceiling is high and the hall tone with long reverberation is wonderful.
I would like to listen to Haitink's concert again.
👍
Very Very special, heartfelt Thanks and Best Prayers for DW for their Extraordinary services to Whole World.
Thank you for kind words. We're glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Mozart?
Some yrs ago, 2005 I believe, my son Paul took me to a concert at my old high school, featuring this symphony...a VERY treasured work of mine going back many yrs; yet...Seeing&Hearing it 'Live' right next to my son....I tell u all....could not hold back the Volumes of tears that came forth thru-out the reading..my son Paul stunned beyond belief of my emoting of this work....jn
Thank you for sharing these special memories with us!
In this symphony on the whole, which balances the majestic, the learned, and the fleet and stylish galant, I can hear the coming of the Jupiter Symphony in C major (so called by the London public) at the height of his career
Fantastic! GOD bless all performers in the name of Jesus!😇
👍
great warmth and acoustics
Mozart eterno 💪
Its notable that is a truly music director that is in charge!
Congratulations to find my channel, piano I have written in romantic style, which is my style really I have given new life to the style
Have just put me playing the piano now I am a little star
Just one moment of his greatness as a World leading conductor, is illustrated here at 09:12 as Bernard Haitink patiently suspends the performance 🎭 between movements to allow some annoying member of the audience to take control their irritating need to cough. Clearly disturbed, but not showing it, he waits, poised until silence is restored to the auditorium and only then does he allow the beauty of Mozart’s magic to resume for the rest of the audience to enjoy.
Soothing and capable of erasing mental contamination accumulated during a hard day's work
A collection of beautiful European faces. What a treat. Not to mention the Mozart!
Hermoso Gracias !!!
MARVELOUS 💝✨🌍🎇.......!
Magnifica interpretación.
Beautifully crafted. I was struck by the little detail of the treatment of some of the grace notes: some skated over almost unheard while others stretched out (example at 21:51). I have never seen the score but most interpretations I have heard treat them quite uniformly throughout. I'm not sure which I prefer now, but this treatment made me sit up and take notice.
Perfect choice at 21:51 !
Sublime, merci. 💖💝
this is utterly sublime. Thank you for making this
Preety really gracefully you playing is tantalizing. BRAVO BRAVO
Beautiful ❤️
I love how he does the repeats in the first movement.
He made music, not war.
Of course he's not Israel
Wanderful concert good rendition orchestra
Peut-être LE plus grand chef !!!
