- Multi-award-winning conductor Bernard Haitink leads the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. They perform Claude Debussy's 'La mer, trois esquisses symphoniques pour orchestre,' known simply as 'La mer.'
Claude Debussy (1862 - 1918) wrote this composition of 'three symphonic sketches' between 1903 and 1905. Upon its premiere in Paris in October 1905, it was not well-received, provoking confusion and dismay among both audience and critics. But after performances in the United States and Britain, it was performed again in Paris in 1908, and then quickly became one of Debussy's most famous and admired orchestral works.
Along with Debussy's 'Nocturnes,' 'La mer' exemplifies musical Impressionism and serves as a transition between the Romantic and modern eras.
Bernard Haitink began his conducting career with Netherlands Radio: he became chief conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic in 1957. Later he was principal conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and held this position for 27 years. Today he is patron of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Honorary Conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Bernard Haitink has also been Music Director of the Glyndebourne Festival and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and Chief Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He is an honorary member of the Berlin Philharmonic, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and since 2019, the Vienna Philharmonic. He has received numerous prizes and awards, including the Gramophone Lifetime Achievement Award.

Sadly, Bernard Haitink passed away at age 92 in 2021, which means he directed this piece and others in 2009 at age 80!! He last directed a concert in September 2019, which means he was 89!!! Amazing and his directing was too!!
I was there, in Concertgebouw. I actually listened to this performance in Mar 2009. The program consisted of Mozart's 35th, Debussiy's La Mer, and Beethoven's 7th, all of which were so excellent and so touching that I can remember them as if I were listening in now. Although the maestro was suffering from a back pain at that time, we never realised such a disadvantage of his, due to the great rendition. Thank you very much, Maestro Haitink, and Concertgebouw Orchestra led by Mr. Eshkenazy.
I saw him conduct the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2007. Mahler's 2nd Symphony, got a second-row seat. Truly amazing performance. When I reach his age, I'd like to just be able to stand up for that long, much less wave my arms around the whole time. Considering he started conducting the year my father was born.
You're very fortunate! I'm glad to hear of your experience
@@SynchroScore He was legendary.
You must be well learned
Merci infiniment. ❤
7:56 who would have thought cello and English horn could make such a powerful statement together. Wonderful orchestration.
The flute/oboe unison duet at 21:24 is spectacular!

Devoted, no nonsense conducting ... Musicians clearly, deeply respect him ... Bravi !
I'm a college student here, my professor has shown us this work and I want to indulge for a moment. Debussy: La mer by Bernard Haitink is a piece that beautifully captures the essence of the sea and its hearts truth. Beautifully constructed and composed by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in a manner of grace, this is my favorite work thus far!
This is my favorite Work of Music of all time!
Debussy so, miraculously, has recreated the "Experience of the Sea"----he, feels the sea, he lives it!!!!
Maestro Bernard Haitink, ALSO, saw something else, which other Conductors just fail to see, and, FEEL
before them: The BEAUTY OF THE SEA!!!! He has so much command of the Orchestra, that he brings out the
BEAUTY in each Instrument with such care and TASTE!!!!
All the sections of the Orchestra
sounded so beautifully, with the, exact Poetry of each phrase!!!!
This is, indeed, quite a "Master's FEAT!!!!
I can't ever forget the truly beautiful "Line & Color" that he culled from each and every one of the Instruments!!!!
We, most certainly, need him, today, and in the Future, to make GOOD TASTE and Deep Insight---- Happ

I’m so high and just sat through this, beautiful 🤘
Saw this with my husband last Sunday, performed by the Memphis Symphonic Orchestra, and we live in Memphis, so I am so blessed to have witnessed this absolutely beautiful masterpiece in all its power, in person., I will never forget the experience, not only this masterwork, but of all of the other showcased Classical works of art. Thank God we got the tickets in time!!!
What's the connection you're drawing between Memphis and feeling blessed?
@@reev9759 I said tht I was blessed to have seen this piece in person. It was performed by the Memphis Symphonic Orchestra, and we just happened to get tickets in time to see it performed Live.
@@StephanieYoungChannl You said you live in Memphis, "so" you are blessed. "So" indicates a connection that you never made.
@@reev9759 I was only saying that if I didn't live in this area, I would have never been able to see this masterpiece being performed, thus, I am thankful to have seen it performed here. I made a very real connection with the music, that I hadn't been able to make from watching it on various devices in our house.

@@DWClassicalMusicWhat about all those comments that are not in English? Only mine in French was disturbing. The music in this video is French so I wrote mine automatically. Neither French nor English are my mother tongues. Ok, never mind.
Merci.

Absolutely gorgeous performance and sound quality!
This performance is comfortable to the ear an to the mind
There is no performance more intriguing and captivating and inspirational and magnificent than this performance
This performance is amazing!❤❤❤
How wonderful it would have been to be at this concert!
Wonderful work, wonderful conductor.
Many modern composers have gone further than Debussy in timbre, study of modes, atonality, dodecaphony, seriality, sonorics, etc. But Debussy still remains a relevant composer with amazing music. The harmonic connection and melody were still important to him.
This music is the supreme gift from a genius composer. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I have been challenged on RUclips because the video did not measure up to this standard and I said so. Then all kinds of folks challenged my evaluation of the inferior work. This is the creme de la creme.

R.I.P Maestro Forever
A magical, lavishly beautiful performance by a great Maestro Haitink and Orchestra💙💙💙💙💙
We're going to watch this being played by the Memphis Symphony orchestra next Sunday, so I'm watching this on my computer, with my good speakers, to prepare myself for it. :)
Enjoy! :)
Muchas gracias DW Classical. Y me sumo a los aplausos.

RIP Maestro Haitink
THE BEST INTERPRETATION and PERFORMANCE of LA MER on RUclips.Haitink's tempi are IDEAL. I had the Phillips Stereo Lp when it came out in the late 1970s and this is a mirror. GORGEOUS. My favorite interpretation of La Mer on RUclips FULL STOP Question: What is the date of this performance
Have same LP his renditions of Mahler and Bruckner are brilliant also
@

Around 1989, when he was about 69.
Very similar to Dutoit's tempos. That's my favorite recording.
same me UK's HI FI news gave it a good rating
@raymondo no, the video is from 2009.
Well done
He is one of my favorite conductors.
Maestro Haitink!!!
La Mer goes well with the seascape’s paintings of Turner
Ce sont deux artistes impressionnistes exceptionnels.

Why is the volume so low ? Can't hear anything...
Genial ejecución virtuosa...

Deutsche Welle should stick to this. Their journalism is a work in progress.
Growing up in Rhode Island, Haitink, along with Tennstedt and Colin Davis, were my favorite guest conductors in Boston and Tanglewood. He was a good match for that "french" orchestra.
a classic example of how inadequate words are for describing music at tis best

Brass at 24:36!!!
I wonder if there is a way to buy this on CD or DVD?
You can buy the SACD "Debussy: "Prelude. Nocturnes. La Mer." with Bernard Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra on the Internet. Have fun with it😊

Interesting the Concertgebouw Orchestra has so many Oriental players, any reason?
