The first time I heard music by Debussy I was 19 and a friend of mine was learning to play Clare de Lune... She could only play the first few bars but I had a very strong reaction to the music and went out of my way to discover more. I am 59 now and I have been playing the piano since I was about 30; I didn't have the opportunity until then, and I am mostly self-taught so my technique is unorthodox and my sight-reading is very poor. I wanted to play the piano even as a child but it wasn't possible. WHen I heard Clare de Lune I told myself I will play it one day. Last year I started to have lessons with a wonderful teacher and I told her my ambition is to play Clare de Lune, and she is helping me to get there. To be able to make this music myself is my dream. I can never tire of it.

Debussy is unlike other composers. Instead of being dramatic and going all out with an entire orchestra, most of his songs are hauntingly ethereal and beautiful - and produced by a single, lone piano. pure magic.

I searched for the composer, but it was difficult because it was not the piano and I had no base of reference. Finally after about 3 years of searching , I found Claude. I am a better person for having heard his music. When I was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and given 6 months to live. I would play this album over and over again. Sometimes I would cry, then be filled with wondrous beauty and joy . All while listening to the same song. That was 10 years ago.

+JustAlberlos You may not, perhaps, be aware that Debussy came up during the 1870's, which makes him 19th Century-born. He didn't, however, receive recognition of any real consequence or reach his epitome of classical music notoriety until around 1905 [at the beginning of the 20th Century]. The point is, many of his pieces were composed 'before' the turn of the century.
However, if we were back in Paris during the late 19th and early 20th Century's, I would double dare you to call Debussy an impressionist to his face! As for me, out of sheer respect for the man, I would choose not to call him such; or any other musical composer if one really understood what the term implies in a musical connotation. Hint: Milli Vanilli scandal. It's quite different, though, with painters [who impersonate on purpose].

+JustAlberlos He rejected the term "impressionnist" to characterise his music. He is of course not from the classical period. He was very modern in his compositions. Also, 19th century is the century of the romantics, not the classical composers (though debussy was born somewhere around 1870).

Debussy broadcasts "vibrations" of, indeed, "safety" by taking us through the barrier into The World of Natural Beauty, especially, the Real Beauty of the "The Not-yet Scientifically Explored Cosmos", and True Sensuousness, thus "rescuing" us from the abuse and dehumanization of "ugliness"---- the "outer face" of Negativity, Abolition of Progress,
      Dehumanization, Deep inner Cruelty!!

Arabesque No. 1 gives me life! I remember when I would listen to classical demos on my keyboard when I was younger (about five or six years ago...I'm 18), and this is one of the songs that hit me. I had to find the sheet music for it and learn it, though it was ahead of my piano level at the time. I had no private tutor, so despite the fact that I was a fast learner, I had to learn at the general speed of the class *sigh*. I'm thankful for that though, because a lot of what I know musically speaking is what I taught myself.
I finally played this song at a recital at age 14 or 15. I then became more familiar with Debussy's works and realized that I love the way he communicates through his pieces. I realized that my style is quite similar to his.
I guess the point of all this was to give a backstory, for those who may care, as to why exactly Arabesque No. 1 will always be near and dear to me.

Many composers, like Chopin, Beethoven and Mozart, wrote music deliberately to soothe and calm down the listener into a lovely sleepy, dreamy state. It's usually known as nocturnes, or nachtmusik. Other times they'd write music to evoke angry rage, or sadness, or regret or rousing excitement or any of many other emotions in their listeners. Not only in the classical/romantic/ baroque styles, but even in modern rock and jazz. Music has as many emotions as there are emotions itself.

His soul is interpreted through the breath of his music. What I experience in listening is completely spiritual as this is what I believe gifted his mastering style. What a faraway place he takes me to in listening, a place of simple beauty and peacefulness. I personally appreciate the solitude it leaves within me, especially in these stressful and unstable times we are in.

His times were as stressful. He was a bit of a loner, his first woman apparently committed suicide, and he died of cancer in his 50s during the end of World War I. I would agree that his music was sublime. Take care.

I'm naturally inclined to play the drums and percussion - drum kit especially is my love. I thought had gotten a late start with it, starting at the age of 13, but I seemed to pick it up fairly quickly and I was on par in technical skill with several of my drumming peers over the years. That's not to blow my own whistle, I have much to learn as a musician! Anyway, as a drummer I got invited into band in high school, and then college, and now at the age of 24 I'm having great fun in an alternative rock band. Being in a band, you'd never think this drummer, this noisy beatmaker, this rock and roll loving soul... You'd never think he'd melt and collapse into tears upon hearing Clair De Lune. I remember hearing the piece when my older sister was in music school, as she worked her way through some of the more complex arpeggiations and nailing the dynamics just right... I always remembered the tune, the first couple notes of the song, but I would always forget the name of the actual piece! I finally rediscovered the song randomly in a RUclips playlist recently; I recognized the distinct introduction instantly. The emotion. The incredibly artistic and intelligent composition. The expression. It's not like I haven't heard classical music before... But recently it's been different. I don't just feel like I'm hearing it - I'm _listening_ to it, moving with it, flowing with the dynamic shifts and melodies... Perhaps it's just part of maturing as a musician and as a human being, but I have a newfound love for classical. I hope to pick up the piano and learn pieces like this. Thanks for reading if you made it this far

@rammpeth Culture Well, unfortunately my band is no longer together... Creative differences is mainly why we split up. But if you are so inclined to see what we were doing, we were called "Perpetuals". I think everything is still up on Spotify or a quick youtube search should do it - my favorite track that we made is called "Waking Up".

I first listened to Debussy when I was a teenager, my father gave me an album of classical piano music as a gift. At that time he lived in the USA and could get me all kinds of classical music records. I've always loved piano music and classical and baroque music in general. It's beautiful. In the 90' when I was a child there was not much Internet technology, but I learned from these authors thanks to the Larousse dictionary that in the final part of his dictionary brings the anthology of illustrious men in the history of mankind. It was in that book that reading the authors' biographies I read for the first time, as in 1992, the name Chopin, the biography said "Polish descent pianist
French ", and I love everything French, in short, I asked my father for a record of classical music and he sent me one where Chopin and Debussy came and I was fascinated, that time marked me forever. Simply beautiful music, beautiful composers. Greetings from Chiapas-México 🇲🇽

From what I've read, I don't think Debussy was actually a good person.. Left his first wife (Rosalie Texier) so depressed she actually attempted to commit suicide.
And while she was in the hospital, he didn't even visit her once or pay for any of her medical bills because by that point, he was interested in another woman (Emma Bardac).
He ended up hating her too.
Heard he was really irresponsible with money as well.

Someone in the comments said this music is boring...
I think this music and classical music in general needs that those listening it to have a good dose of imagination, this kind of music promote thinking, images, emotions and these are not precooked-eaten-digested as in the contemporary pop music.
Every few second the image changes as much as the thoughts and the emotions, and all together they make a long fantastic tale and the tale is your own only. While in contemporary music you get one concept (often given in words), one feeling, one emotion and it last almost always the same short time, no space for imagination, it tells you what to think and what to feel. You can just agree or not.
Classical music is boring because you do not want get the hassle to think with your brain.
