Many people that don't play the piano may not realize how excruciatingly difficult it is to play Mozart. You have to balance delicacy with classical majesty yet keep it within Mozart's rather narrow emotional boundaries. Here we have someone so skilled it almost defies comprehension. The pearl like consistency of her trills and runs boggles the mind after you try this yourself. I believe this is how Mozart envisioned this to be played. Not an anemic, whimpy style that so many approach it with. Mozart had power but it was so tightly controlled and monitored. Surely Mozart has driven more pianists to madness than any other composer. Yet here Ms Son effortlessly lets the piano sing to its heart's content. This is a performance that has few rivals. True best-in-the-world playing.

I have searched under every stone, book, and piece of furniture. Yet, I still cannot find a flaw in technique, interpretation, nor within the general emotional aspects which serve to grant a supreme ethereal complement to this performance. I have said it before, with Mitsuko Uchida doing the Mozart 9 (Jeunehomme) and my comment then was properly deemed a strong positive assessment: "She gives Mozart balls". I do not mean this in a trivial, pejorative sense. I mean it in a substantive, overpowering sense, one that witnesses my assessment of an extraordinary substance to a composer that I sometimes do not fully embrace.
When it becomes necessary to treat Mozart delicately, Yeol Eum Son does. When it becomes necessary to perform some passages with a romantic flare and powerful passion, she does. It distills into something as simple as that. She is not intimidated, fearful, afraid of Mozart. Yeol Eum Son is not hesitant to attack this as it should be attacked. This is probably Mozart's very best Second Movement that he ever wrote and its performance is more than adequate. Overall, the performance is stunning and I do agree with many out there that it is probably the best on RUclips for this '21'. - David Lyga

The way her fingers float over the piano keys as she performs, expressing and sharing her emotions with the world, makes me believe in the existence of perfection. This performance with the young pianist, Yeol Eum Son, got the essence, tone and articulation of the Concerto No. 21, which I love. It sends me into a 'seventh heaven'. Wonderful! Wonderful piano playing and accompaniment brought out by a wonderful work of conducting. Pencil or baton is immaterial, this young conductor has immersed himself in the wonderful art of getting the best out of everyone on that stage. I just discovered this performer and performance last night. Don't know how I missed her. I started piano in the 1950s and studied the classics and have taught piano. I've even had Korean students who lived near me. These days, especially with RUclips, we're amazed with the technical skill of young Orientals/Far Eastern Asians. We've seen them completely immersed in demanding compositions. My experience, not to be charged with pc insensivity, is that while the brilliance, quick learning, technical skill is laudable, they very often fall short on personal interpretation. They stick to the dynamics on the page. Last evening, I was held captive by Yeol Eum as she took me to heights no other Asian has. I told my wife, if this were only audio, I might wonder if this was a recording of Artur Rubenstein. And if that's not enough, her showmanship, mastery over hand and finger positions only elevated the performance for me. I can't remember when I was so taken in by a classical pianist.

Maybe I read too much into it, but I can't help but hear a hint of unjust racism there. In absolutely every culture and country, there are lots of musicians who play only technically, "falling short on personal interpretation". You'll find them even at the most prestigious conservatories around the world. You'll find them in Russia, in Germany, in England, in America. Years of rigorous training can lead to a brilliant technique that occasionally covers for this lack of true talent or pure love of music, free of ulterior motives. That you may encounter more of them who are Asian is simply because there are more Asian young people who learn music, taking the ratio to the number of the population, and because learning music (and the most competitive instruments in particular- piano and violin) is big in far-east Asian culture. I don't think classical music belongs to one people or another, the same way that a jazz musician from the Netherlands, for example, would never consider himself an outsider to the genre or feel he needs to prove himself. If you grow up learning it and listening to it from a very young age, it's yours. Given real talent, if you have access to good teachers, the right training and the right environment, you have the chance to become a wonderful classical musician. It is only a problem of resources, which have simply always been more available in Europe, considering it is where the tradition was born, but which are becoming more and more available in other countries. Lots of incredible Asian musicians don't have to leave their countries anymore to get a first class education. The same was true for America in the late 19th century. Americans did consider themselves "outsiders" at some point, simply inferior to European classical musicians, but this is no longer the case.

Nah...Rubenstein was the master. He could push a full orchestra into the background. He played so forcefully he was forever breaking pianos. Literally shattering hammers and strings. But Yeol Eum is very, very good. It's her technique and styling that carries the day. By the way, the north Koreans produce some very fine musicians as well. They have some wonderful orchestras.

I've just watched/listened to this for maybe the hundredth time and the tears are still streaming down my cheeks; Mozart in general, and this recording in particular, does this to me every time. For the most part, my family regards my reaction to Mozart's music with blank incomprehension and yet to me the emotions his music engenders are, quite literally, at the heart of what it means 'to be human'. What should I say to them?

Ooh my god! This is the best out of my 30+ years listening of this best Mozart.concerto. Her touch’s god given and her gracefulness paint the hall in golden colour. Beyond words can express. I will never stop to listen this performance.

When she moved her mouth as she played it was like she was kissing every note! Beautiful! What an exquisite and rare combination of technical mastery with profound musical insight, especially in one so young in years! I think I'm in love. We're going to hear much more from her from here on I have no doubt

She was deeply into this piece from the start. It's as if it's a meditation for her.

I imagine her singing in her head. A few years ago, some grumpy stiffs were complaining about it, but I remember Glen Gould humming along as he played. And the concert-master of Collegeum 1704 who swings, like a jazz player, as she plays. That is players feeling their music.
