    Forgot to mention re: the silence. It was Blomstedt’s masterful keeping his arms extended and not lowering them until HE felt it was time to applaud. He conducted the audience’s silence. Bravo, Maestro.

    The respect and love Maestro Blomstedt has for his musicians is unsurpassed. I was fortunate to live in San Francisco when he was the music director. I learned so much from his tenure. His Dvorak, Sibelius, Brahms and Bruckner are without peer. The world has been blessed by his music.

      One of my little daydreams for when the pain is breaking through is to imagine (with no visuals, I have aphantasia) going back in a time machine and giving Beethoven flawless ear transplants/implants/whatever at least so he could hear his 9'th performed with perfectly clear hearing. He deserved it. Such a troubled life brought about this music, we owe him our thanks.

      @@b43xoityup. It helps them keep up with the choir without having to pay as much attention to them. Beethoven is hard without the choir. By singing in their head they can pay most of the attention to the orchestra. (My mother was a Violinist in orchestras)

      Well, at the time of this filming + recording, Maestro Blomstedt was _only_ 88. I was to attend his concert conducting the NHK Symphony Orchestra in October 2023 in Tokorozawa, Japan, but he cancelled it due to ill health. He was 96 at that time, which has already surpassed Leopold Stokowski (who died at age 95) and must enter the Guinness Book.

    Amazingly respectful how the German audience just maintained a total, reverential silence for many, many seconds after the final notes of the piece. To erupt in applause, as is so commonly done, just destroys the magic of Beethoven. That conduct should be the norm. We were spared the brutish “bravos” shouted by the show-off audience members wanting to show that yes, they knew the piece was over and one is expected to shout an Italian word at the top of one’s lungs.

    • @ChollieD
      @ChollieD 9 месяцев назад +24

      OK, but this attitude of there being an exactly correct which-fork-do-I-use etiquette kills interest in classical music. Normal people don't want to attend a mausoleum of pristine perfection. I want to be still and let music wash over me, and not worry too much if somebody applauds between movements (which used to be MORE common). or some other minor _breach of etiquette_ occurs.
      The silence is nice, but the magic of a great Beethoven performance can not be killed by a Bravo, Bravi (even more pretentious!), or even a wolf whistle at the hot soprano.

      I'm no pro by any means nor do I understand the singing. BUT I do like to listen at work at times. I actually attended my first concert last night...Beerhoven's Symphony 9, and felt led to look it up today on RUclips after hearing the explanation of what it was about. Listening to Ode to Joy now. But this lady seated before me last night seemed annoyed that I was humming to the lyrics...not loudly at all. I found it very stoic. You couldn't even open a candy rapper without it feeling like you were disturbing the peace. I thoroughly enjoyed the performance, and I agree the corpseish decorum can turn one away and make you feel like an outsider, especially if you're not knowledgeable about the etiquette.

    Herbert Blomstedt is the god damn man. I'd love to play in a violin section for him. It took me a few minutes to pick up on his cues, and once I did, I could see how much he is commanding this orchestra. Good for him to have that much stamina and energy at that age. You can tell he's done this five thousand times.

    The first two movements of this Symphony represent the burden of work on Beethovens mind that he has to finish in his left-over life,that he raises the tempo,as he knows his life is soon over.He is fatigued,so his frinds nearby put him to rest,and play some soothing music.(the adagio)And a little later the blowing of bugels and trumpets announce the end( l have quoted this allegory from what l once heated from Schnackenburg in Bremen in 1960)

    Thanks for posting. The soloists really should learn their small parts from memory since the chorus and the conductor himself don't need their scores

      The female soloists are non-native speakers of German (i.e. speakers of Slovak and Japanese), which of course serves no excuse for the score in hand.

    I adore Beethoven, and the man whom we must pay tribute to is Beethoven. However, having listened to this at 22:14 in Bandarawela, Sri Lanka, on 12/07/2024, I can hardly believe that Blomstedt is 97 years old! I have actually looked at his Wikipedia entry to make sure that he's still living! It is only yesterday that President Joseph Biden of the USA made an ass of himself in introducing President Zelensky of Ukraine.
    I have known and loved this symphony for 60 years (I'm now 75), and for all that period I've marvelled at the fact that Ludwig van Beethoven never heard this music, when he conducted its premier in Vienna on 7 May 1824 (I've made a second visit to Wikipedia to check).
    However, finally, I don't place even the achievement of Herbert Blomstedt ahead of that of Beethoven. Thanks, dear Ludwig!
