to measure who is the best of all time. Not saying losing your world record detracts from your accomplishments of records and medals, , but having the record makes you the fastest human to EVER cover that distance doing that stroke, which to me makes you the best performer in that event in history.
Lochte's turns are far greater than Phelps' at the moment... I'm excited to see what happens in the individual at the Olympics. I think Lochte will pull out ahead and win.
There was a substantially higher world record rate, over 40 world records lowered at world championships in 2009, the most in history. I doubt there will ever be a year like that again, which is probably a good thing. A world record from 2010 and on really guarantees that you are the best in history.
I agree, Phelps and Lochte on the same relay make the USA almost invincible, and I think those two will lift performance more than anyone come the olympic games. But we can't really see where the USA is at until their Olympic Trials in June, france has Agnel and 3 1:46 freestylers, but I have a feeling the next 2 USA guys will be even faster.
In my opinion, Phelps was at his best shape at Melbourne 2007- He had the best turns back then, the best endurance and was far ahead of the rest of the world. Lochte turns right now are not close to his back then, just watch what he did to Hoogenband, one of the best freestyle swimmers to ever be in the turns, just killed him!
Ok maybe that's true. But I still think turns are crucial for the America team. Without their perfect turns it would be different. Also, Fabien Gilot, the last French swimmer never swims 200m, he was barely prepared for it and just replaced one of his teammates who was hurt. We'll see in London, but I'm pretty sure France has a chance to beat the USA. I can't wait to see the race, it's gonna be very exciting!
I still consider the lzr a pretty big advantage over a textile jammer, but phelps and peirsol (with the exception of phelps in 100 fly) already had the world records in those events prior to the suits, so though the suit helped them but I'm sure they improved themselves in that time frame as well
@@christopherfischetti3583 Phelps wasn't remotely close to his best in 2011 due to his time away from swimming. Phelps does 143 in suit and without suit Beiderman does 142 in suit and 145 without That's my point.

It will be tight between Fra- US and Australia. Wont make any call - but i want Australia to win....:p
the "supersuit" had something called polyurethane in them. which was like rubber and it made the suits float. although its called the lzr its no a supersuit lzr
you asked this a while ago, but in case you were still wondering, he was licking his goggles. If youre not a swimmer this may seem weird but Its not an uncommon thing for swimmers to do. It clears up your goggles.
Turns are a part of swimming. Obviously it would be different if they weren't so good at the turns, but that's like saying that France wouldn't be as good if they didn't kick so hard. Turns are just another element in swimming, and it just so happens that America dominates in that category.
World Championships are every year, however they alternate short course and long course, and the short course competition is not nearly as popular as the long course years. 2008 was in Manchester (short course), 2009 Rome (Long course), 2010 Dubai (sc), 2011 Shanghai (lc), and 2012 will be in Istanbul (sc). World Championships and Olympics are two entirely different competitions.
Hello, just one simple question that I hope you can answer me. So the question is I know that during 2008-09 when the suit was still legal for competitions, was there a substantially higher record breaking rate compare to perhaps 2006 or even this one in shanghai? As I know of there is only 2 record that are broken in shanghai which is Lochte and SunY.
Yes, Russia is always one to consider, Danila Isotov has been pretty good the last couple years. 4x100 free I'm giving to Australia. France is looking good with 4 48-second swimmers, USA always manages to put together a good team regardless of previous performances, but Australia has 2 47-second swimmers, they're defending the title from 2011, and they're slowest leg from their trials was eamon sullivan, who's a former world record holder. So I'd say Australia wins it.
I agree, it's going to be very exciting! But, I just dont think this is going to be Frances year in the 4x200. I think they stand a better change against Austrailia in the 4x100. (who also has a very strong team) Phelps and Lochte will prob swim 1:43's in the 200 and will prove very hard to beat. Beren's and Vanderkaay will prob be the other two US swimmers and will prob hover around a low 1:44 with a relay start. Lochte hates to lose and will prob anchor the US with a very fast time!
Well I'm pretty sure FINA Isn't thinking of getting rid of the 15m underwater rule anytime soon, or making longer pools, so the Americans and other great swimmers of the world can continue to rely on their turns for that extra boost. However, France is looking really good this year, but you can't really tell where USA is at until their Olympic Trials in June. Having Phelps and Lochte on the same relay makes them very dangerous.
That's not technically correct. The LC WC's and the SC WC's are two separate events. The SC WC's are a swimming only event held on the years in-between the LC WC's which include all aquatic events (diving, polo, synchro and open water)
@okuryu100 If you are a swimmer you will know that your goggle will always get steamed up and fogged. The only way to make sure it doesn't is to lick it. every swimmer does it, there is no other effective way to prevent fog.
Its very simple: French have 1 mega swimmer (Agnel) who goes 1.44, America have 2 mega swimmers (Phelps and Lochte) that both of them goes 1.44 and maybe will do 1.43. Barens and Vanderkay will be enough to win the french team.
@okuryu100 clearing out his goggles, making sure that they weren't gonna be foggy for the race, although I haven't seen anyone over the age of 11 do that before ever.
Fabien Gilot qualified for their team in the 100 free, actually didn't even race the 200 free at France's selection meet in 2011. Looks like they gave him a chance on this relay since his 100 free (48.1) was so solid earlier in the meet, and he did a great time relative to his own personal best (1:47.3 on this relay, 1:48.2 all-time person best flat start). Definitely nowhere near the pedigree of Lochte in 2011 though, that was him in his career-best shape.
I agree with that prediction, except I don't think China will beat France, Agnel looks really good this year for 200 free, and they're trials was the fastest ever in France, proven my Alain Bernard not even making the 100 free as an individual swim and freddie bousquet not making the team.
Damn, Lochte just absolutely kills it on the turns
omg, Lochte and Phelps dolphin are just eye-popping! How do they hold so much air?????
Obviously, conditioning. They have awesome endurance.

yeah, but to be fair, he did go 1:44.9 in the 200m freestyle final, so it's actually a little less.
