phelps could break WR of Thorpe in swimming pool but I think that Thorpe would have chased him down if they had swum 200m across a river because no place for dolphin kick off wall :v
@@theterminator308 with that logic thorpe would've never beaten v.d. hoogenband in the first place. In Athens thorpey gained so much time over hoogie with his turns.
I get so much satisfaction out of watching Phelps pop up to the surface after his long turns! It’s just epic, the others are racing and he’s miles in front but hasn’t even surfaced/started freestyling yet! (Last turn in particular is like 👌🏼- he actually disappears, he’s swimming so deep). It’s mesmerising, love watching his turns!
My god, standing on the block before they hit the buzzer for the start is seriously the most nerve wrecking thing ever. So nervous :o.......much respect to Phelps.
well, remember that Michael dominated the 200 free from 2005-2009 until he lost against Biedermann recently. In that period of time, Phelps broke the world record of the 200 FREE twice and won one olympic gold and two world championships so Michael has proved he's the most versatile swimmer who's ever lived.
True. They syt that Phelps was a great backstroker too. It's insane just how good Phelps was in all 4 strokes even his breaststroke improved considerably over the years.
+Mayank Gupta Yea, Park. I think that if he didnt keep the end explosive and rather distributed his energy, maybe he could've given Phelps a competition. Anyways, you should look up Sun Yang. That dud has much crazier finishes.
It's the turns that Phelps really improved on since Athens that I think have made the difference. Just look at his turn on the last 50m of this race - he comes out off the wall a body length ahead of Vanhoogenband (sp?)
What is amazing is that he was 0.53 ahead of Thrope's split @ 150, but at the end only 0.20 ahead. Given that Phelps had an insane 3rd turn it goes to show how good Thorpe's last 50m was. If Thorpe in 2001 form Raced Phelps in 2007 form (both with LZRs), I would have to give it to Thorpe with a 1:43-mid WR. If Phelps was in Beijing shape then Thorpe would not be able to live with him over this distance. Phelps has come on remarkably, not just since Athens, but also in the last 12 months.
when Ian used to race the 200 he raced against Hoogenband, who beat him forcing him to outpace at Sydney 2000 Olympics. After that Ian remains in "control" of his races and always had a strategy of racing " 1-ok 2-ok 3-ok 4-i give everything I have". Had Ian raced the "modern" way of swimming 200 free he for sure have had 1.43 low PB.
you can really see that van den hoogenband struggles on his turns. This is mostly because he had a hernia 2 years prior to this. This is actually an insanely good performance.
Turns take a lot of time to master. If Phelps mastered it and can be underwater for longer than other people, then its only fair. Other competitors can make deeper turns if they chose to.
Those days when nobody but phelps take under water dolphin kick seriously. He teaches the world they need to dolphin kick to have at least a chance to beat him.
@@Aakos94 I love watching a swimmer racing with this technique; it looks like he’s going quite slow! He is a beautiful freestyler to watch. I wish I had of seen him race in person. Like most sports, you need to see it live.
maybe? are you kidding me?. He's the undisputed Best swimmer ever. Popov, Spitz, Biondi, De Bruin, Hackett, etc all the greats have said that Michael is the best ever. He's won 14 golds in Olympic history, 22 golds in worlds and has broken 37 world records. Michael has won golds in the toughest swim styles: 200 fly, 200 and 400IM and has won gold in the 200 free so what else he has to do to get your respect? at least he has the respect of the swim experts and greats.
But not this one. Polyurethane suit started with Speedo LZR in 2008 (especially at the Olympics that year). Prior to 2008, including at this 2007 Worlds, it's still textile suit. So basically, this swim by Phelp is still the WR is if you discount the high-tech suit from the 2008-2009 season.
No, it is not. In 2007, Phelps used the polyurethane swimsuit and broke world records in the 200m butterfly and 200m freestyle. 2006 200m butterfly 1.53.80. 2007 1.52.09. It is not possible to accelerate this much in 1 year. He also swam 1.52.03 in the 200m butterfly in 2008. In the 200m freestyle, if she had a textile swimsuit, she would have swam around 1.45.10 in 2007.
The previous record was by Ian Thorpe, Thorpe destroyed everyone on the last turn and if he had this version of Phelps to compete against he would have broken the world record even more, seeing Phelps half a body length in front of Thorpe at 25m and noticing how quickly Thorpe started to catch up to Phelps at the end is incredible
that last turn under water was so freaking sick
phelps could break WR of Thorpe in swimming pool but I think that Thorpe would have chased him down if they had swum 200m across a river because no place for dolphin kick off wall :v
theterminator308 maybe, but if they raced in rivers then phelps probably wouldnt practice his turns so much, so you couldnt really say
I had to rewind it several times because I couldn’t believe how much distance & speed he gained. That blew me away 😳
@@theterminator308 LOL. What if there were sharks with lazers on their heads as well?
@@theterminator308 with that logic thorpe would've never beaten v.d. hoogenband in the first place. In Athens thorpey gained so much time over hoogie with his turns.
this, with the huge crazy last turn, is my favorite swim by michael phelps
Phelps's rough stroke count every 50: 28-28-31-30 thats just tremendous
I count 25-29-31-30
@David Pumpkin same…
Michael Phelps used 2007 World Championships as a dress rehearsal in preparation for Beijing. The whole meet was a foreshadowing event.
And the only reason MP didn't win 8 golds in 2007 was because the medley relay was DQ'd in the heats.
THE! BALTIMORE! BULLET! (BB)! IS! THE! (G,O,A,T)! SWIMMER! HA! HA! HA!
WOW, that last wall was incredible!
Phelps has the best underwaters in ever. I think this is one of the main reasons why he is so amazing.

holy shit , phelps underwater kick is the reason why hes killing it

That last turn of Phelps's was insane. Inhuman.

go ian thorpe!!!!
amazing amazing turns
my point is that Michael Phelps is the best ever: 14 gold medals in olympic history and 17 worlds and counting, just broke the 100 fly record.
that number keeps climbing :)
He just KILLS on his under water dolphin kick!!!!
that last turn where he obliterated PVDH with his underwater changed the sport of swimming. now everyones got a great dolphin kick
Best commentator ever.
Did anyone else notice the 3rd guy who was 5th and took it away in the last lap ?

i love michel phelps and i love swim
That turn!
absolute machine .
the first man under 48. i will always remember that
It takes you to the actual match
Phelps is a sports man that you only see once in a lifetime
Phelps is a fish, the others are human.
I think so
Janita Poe my friend told me:
wtf you don't swim like a human being!!
I told him, thanks I know I swim like a fish xd
He is a mermaid pretend to be human.
Helped by those Super suits..
Those super suits!!!
i swear to god rosolino stares into your soul

Michael - You are amazing !!!!!
without a doubt the announcer makes this video, simply amazing call
"He's going to shatter the world record!!... Phelps, world record... maybe..."
This record will be broken, but you are right, the current record will not.
It will. Its the fastest point during any race, and doing it more effectively than anyone else can easily mean a win.
this race changed de swimming´s keys forever, look at Lochte´s underwater swimming now...
I agree. Fair enough. H'es gonna focus on the 100 and 200 free and the 100 back according to what his couch said.
sei sempre il migliore Michael
1:43 is pure insanity. don't think any record will be broken this year in the 200. no suits
No hay dudas, eres EL MEJORRRRRRRRRRR
Incredible that they are so In control after they finish. How is he not desperately gasping for air after beating a world record!!!!
They can swim so freaking fast!
how the heck could he be on such a higher level than all the others?
even though I knew he was gonna win that race/break the wr this still made my toes curl from nervousness lol
omg that italian guy is just staring at u like im gonna get u :DD
thats gotta be a top secret swimming suit
Pieter's face at 6:34 is priceless.
@ordude123 ..ha ha....he's massi rosolino...i think i saw him walk the runway in milan if im not mistaken, few years back.
AMAZIN' third turn!!!!
i have the same swimsuit of phelps.... when i came to melbourne he gave it to me

lololol 4:43 "hoogenband just starting to peg him back a bit"... Boom, phelps BEAST turn and underwater pops up with a bodylength lead.
@mauroruiz it was textile. The super suits came out in 2008
good job Michael Phelps
dont blame you hes a freak of nature
good job bro, i started swimming a couple of years ago too.
Watching Phelps here it makes you wonder how good he would have been if he just stuck to being a freestyle swimmer like Ian Thorpe.
It's also amazing how quickly they forget about Ian Thorpe
@DrummFreek100 I think it's because the swimmer's name was Monk

oh my God..unbelievable
i love how its like "where is phelps?" *comes up from underwater*
end of an era
Michael Phelps the MAN!

Phelps method is so odd. He does it very quickly left right then pause the left right quickly again. If that makes sense
people often refer to it as a "gallop". it doesnt work for everyone but it can be a great techenique

Dear god, please let me have that exact same win on my 200m freestyle tomorrow TTOTT
What happend?
GRACIAS POR SUBIRLO XD
during the '08 olympics i would stay up freaking late to watch his 50 second race lol it was worth it
Whats going to happen to all the world record s once the swim suit law comes into effect???
logre lo Ke Logre Phelps!! Ian thorpe Siempre va hacer el mejor
yannick agnel didn't need those dolphin kicks in order to pass phelps's record by 0.72s
Phelps is a prodigy!
@soccerboi1996 Albeit with those shiny suits. Dunno how well Biederman's doing at the moment now that the suits are gone.
