    • @joekendras
      @joekendras 22 дня назад

      Peaty? He is great of course, but I think the best ever in breaststroke has to be someone who excelled in all distances. So someone like Kitajima. It isn't required in freestyle as that would apply to nobody, but as in breaststroke there is only a 50, 100, 200 plus some short course races, there are some who have, and the best ever has to be one of those people. Peaty can't even swim a 200, even at his peak.

    I keep watching the video of this race almost... every month. That is... 12 times a year ! So since 2004, one could say it's been ... many times.
    Why? Because this race marked something special for all swimmers: as the winner...
    - "revolutionnized " the way freestyle swimming should be
    - because the "Pressure to perform" in this olympic final was BEYOND THIS WORLD
    - becautse of ....Michael Phelps being there, in the pool, that day
    - Because Ian Thorpe was going to teach all of us, again, how to swim and, how to win any race.
    Bottom line:
    Ian, you had talent (and the genes) of course, but you also had "Le Mental" that it took. Obviously.
    Now, in 2022, whenever I go for a swim, I think of Ian's technique: I glide with my arms as much as I can, I try to float out of the water, and be relaxed while suffering. You know what? It works.
    Merci Ian.

      VHB was under massive oxygen debt on that 3rd turn after a blistering first 100. His turn came up short because he was under so much pressure from doing a 50s split. Thorpe's 3rd turn was a thing of beauty. Phelps' turns in this race were not his usual high standard. He came up short on the 3rd turn, but not as short as VHB. Phelps' last turn in the 400m at Beijing was one of the most incredible things I've ever seen in sport. He swam 10m underwater! At the end of a 400m MEDLEY! Who does that?!

    • @toivonencresto
      @toivonencresto Год назад +2

      @@Fuzcapp Agree 100% with you. 1.44.7 can appear nothing special to this day for a 200 free, but this race was only and totally about facing the immense amount of pressure that media put entering the event. I think a "normal" sport fan may not remember who won the 100m track race of Athens 2004, but for sure remembers this. Peter tried the exact strategy did 4 years earlier, making a 100 free pace in the first 2.5/3 50s. Ian lost an "easy" gold in Sidney because of the strategy of the orange, so smart, he overpaced, did fall in the trap and lost his trademark final burst in the last 50. In Athens the lesson was fully learned and applied: he follow Peter without exaggerating and after the 3rd turn, from which he came out as a rocket, took the lead and touched first.

    Stupidest description ever, coming from someone who doesn't understand this sport whatsoever.
    Phelps was 19years old and competing in 200freestyle (just to get the chance to battle his hero, Ian Thorpe), but outside his comfort zone (butterfly, medley) although this is a race he improved in the following years (besting the time of both of them even with normal swimsuits) . Thorpe and VDH are legends but Michael Phelps is simply the best and most dominant swimmer ever (19 Olympics + 26 World Championship if we count only gold medals: pure craziness).

    • @sainter1
      @sainter1 8 лет назад +18

      +Paolo Angioni Phelps is without doubt the best all round swimmer of all time, but he isn't/wasn't the best freestyler. Ian Thorpe is generally recognised by his peers and experts as the best that ever pulled on a pair of speedos. He won the 400 meters freestyle in world record time at the World Championships at 15 years of age! He'd broken 17 world records before he was 19 and all in the one swimming stroke. He was a freak.

      Thorpe in 2004 with gold in 200-400 free and bronze in 100 free.

    At 5:24 in the underwater shot of the last turn, you can see, VDHB turns too early, and hardly gets any push off the wall, then comes up early. This is probably due to VDHB being unable to glide face-down into the wall, being in so much O2 debt after the first three laps going out so hard. Thorpe on the other hand, as the commentator called it, has some in reserve, so he's able to glide into the wall properly after his last stroke, get a mighty push off the wall and then complete his underwater technique before coming up to breathe. It's all in the oxygen debt.
