I watched this race live as a kid and never thought I would see it again. Thank you so much westnyacktwins for uploading it. Just as amazing as I had remembered it. What a race and what a finish. Truly inspirational. You made our whole country so proud that day John Sieben the Giant killer. You showed everyone that anything is possible if you dare to dream and believe. I will carry this amazing moment with me for the rest of my life.

Thanks for uploading this. It's my favourite Olympic moment. From memory, it was a Saturday morning in Australia and I was home alone while my dad was at work, and my mum and sisters were doing the weekly shopping. Everyone expected Gross to win..... I had never even heard of Jon Sieben. Unbelievable swim. I was jumping around the house celebrating but I had no one to celebrate with. 😂 I couldn't wait to tell someone. His coach Laurie Lawrence was a character. Cheers

I can honestly say this was the most exciting Australian gold medal and world record I have ever seen. I was exactly the same age, 17 and my parents had just left the house to go shopping or something because there was no chance he could win. As it turned out Sieben came from the clouds to win from absolutely nowhere. I remember running outside jumping over the birdbath because my parents were still in the driveway. I told them that Australia had won gold. They stopped, came inside and we all rejoiced. The Sieben name has been burned into my psychology ever since and still to this day. A win for the ages and I’m nearly 53 now. I still have no idea how he did it?

17 year old Sieben. I had to watch this again. I saw it on TV back in 1984, but I was focused on our guys (USA). I hadn't noticed what an ASTOUNDING comeback that was by Sieben. He was nowhere in the picture at the 100 or the 150 mark. That was a savage close.

I remember watching this live, and it's still just as exciting watching it now. What a finish by Siebens! I love watching youngsters like him surprising the veterans. I am also impressed how gracious Michael Gross always was when he was beaten, he was such a good sport.

I remember watching this live and being seriously impressed. I've always loved swimming and Jon inspired me that year to do better at our school swimming carnival. I didn't realise back then how young he really was. 😆 I was only 13 so I thought he was way older. He has always rated as one of my favourite athletes just because of this race.
I realise he probably won't see this but I'd like to congratulate Jon on becoming a member of the ISHOF (International Swimming Hall of Fame), in a few days (April 25, 2020). You represent us so well both in and after the pool.

It was quite a shocking result. Gross didn’t swim poorly, Sieben swam the race of his life and beat him. Sieben had some nice results later but never reached these heights again.

The essence of the Olympic Games - Jon Sieben was ranked 25th in the world, but he stepped up when it mattered and swam the race of his career on the world's biggest stage.

  • @ajaxcatch

the most interesting thing about this race is jon sieben. You have to remember is was only small 5 8 or 5 9 and grosse was like 6 6 or something. But most interesting is jon siebens style is really the same as modern day leclos. It looks slightly different but it pretty much the same you can see it. Hes swimming two beautiful kicks per arm stroke and realy working the back end of the pull and core like the modern days phelps. So siebens technique was way ahead of his time because most people back then used more arm than body dolphin and core like sieben did. So congrats to his coach.

I remember this race...but never paid attention to Sieben until the final 15 meters. It's great to be able to watch the whole race and analyze it. He was dead last at the 100 with lanes 7 and 8 and coming off the wall looked dead. Somewhere around the 120 mark he seemed to switch gears and never let up. I don't know how he can swim so fast breathing every stroke; especially out of turns. I was hoping to be in that race but was forced to retire in '82.

A lot of parallels with Le Clos's upset of Phelps in the same event in London 2012. Similar style, and outcome. But Gross much more generous in his congratulations, it must be said.
