2008 is probably the greatest Olympics ever, closely followed by 2012, but in 2012 sport as a whole peaked: not only the incredible Olympics which were dominated by the all-time greats Bolt and Phelps, but you had also the peak of Messi-Ronaldo rivalry, Messi scoring 91 goals in a calendar year, the crazy Manchester City title run in England, Chelsea incredible run in the UCL, Spain golden generation winning another Euro, Zlatan bicycle kick goal, it was the peak year for Nadal-Djokovic rivalry (the AO final is legendary), Federer won another Wimbledon, Murray with the Olympic gold, Lomachenko and Usyk won gold too, Klitschko brothers together dominated boxing for one last year, etc.
And 56 years later, Beamon still has the second-longest legal jump ever. For those who want to discount it because it was at altitude, remember that nobody else broke the previous world record that day.
That performance is a mathematical anomaly. I had the task of making a graph of the long jump word record back in grade 8, in 1988 and back then Beamon was still the world record holder for the long jump.
@@Victor-qj7osI think it is because Olympic champion Karsten Warholm clocked in 45.94 seconds at the Tokyo 2020 Games. Just behind him is US hurdler Rai Benjamin, whose own time of 46.17 in the Olympic final would have been enough to become the world record holder had Karsten not been in the race.

I didn't realise an Australian held an Olympic track and field record. A few of these are due for revision, particularly the PV and 110mh. Grant Holloway is just outside record time in the hurdles and obvs Mondo will rewrite the PV record.
Kudos to Rai Benjamin who ended 2nd in Warholm world record race... because he broke the world record too. He ran 46.17, world record was 46.70. It's sad, when you break world record and still end up 2nd...
Technically when he finished world record was set by Warholm, haha. But yeah, you set second fastest 400 metres run in history and finished only silver is kinda sad..
Mad to think the Long Jump, Triple Jump and High Jump records were all set last century (even the 110 hurdles was 20 years ago). Some of the more technical elements of track and field seem harder to surpass than plain running. Which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, but here we are.
