Who is here because they understand the sport and recognize that this was a major upset?? I mean - total deja vu from 1984 when the US defeated the West Germans and Michael Gross...
I would hardly call this a major upset. Recent times by both Australia and the U.S going into this final were evenly matched. Also Australians had their issues. Grant Hackett was suffering from a lung infection and Michael Klim had been out injured the previous years and lacked competitive racing with this event been his only race of the Athens games. There was always going to be such a fine margin between success and failure. Strategically the U.S got it right. Still even today looking back on it, it’s a great race to rewatch.
When talking about the great anchor swims in Olympic relay history they always talk about Lezak in 2008 or Thorpe in 2000 but this ranks up there for Keller to hold off Ian Thorpe for 200m was incredible. And look at Phelps and Lochte they look so young just kids. LOL
Heck. Keller went in with a one and half second lead , over 100 meters this is HUGE and he won be 13/100ths of ONE second - that is NOT huge...if Klim had not cracked up due to injury the decision would have went the other way.
@@toivonencresto Yes but he is not as good as Thorpe obviously. And the 200 isn't even his best race, the 400 he is still clearly behind Thorpe but more competitive with him than the 200. For him it was still an incredible effort to hold him off even with the lead. That is the point. I don't see what is so confusing about that. It is similar to how Bruce Hayes did well to hold off Gross in 84, it does not matter that he had a clear lead.
This final has basically been removed from RUclips in good quality video. Most likely because this race had been won by Klete Keller for the US, and he found to be guilty in the Capitol riots. Typical American approach. US won BECAUSE OF Klete Keller here. We want the video back.
Every now and then a total freak comes along in swimming - Phelps, and Thorpe! Two of the biggest. Fantastic last leg by the American, though. Really hung in there.
It was! But that's what makes this effort by the american even more impressive - to hold off Thorpe in a 200(!) when he knows what Thorpe did to Hall over 100.. it takes an ENORMOUS amount of mental strength. It's super impressive.
Yeah. I think Thorpe swam a world record 400 on the same night, did he? I might be getting my Thorpedo brilliance mixed up there. i saw Thorpie at Macquarie University pool once and he was soooooo shy! What a legend in the pool though.
As an Australian its good to hear an American with such great sportsmanship. Its always amazing to race you yanks - especially back in the day with our better swimmers.
I will never forget when Gary Hall, Jr. said in 2000 that the Americans would "smash the Australians like cheap guitars" in the 400 Free Relay. The Australians won comfortably and got their well-deserved pound of flesh by air guitaring for a few seconds. Then both teams congratulated each other with huge grins and laughter.
