So true I played it for the first time 10 years ago and I think it's the first video games character that I really appreciate. It was so cool growing up with him going through all the sad stuff he had to face and also the good moments. What a great game!
I personally just love it. 2 months ago i found my DQ9 again and now I'm fully into the alchemy. I even bought the DQ8 remake because my PS2 isn't working anymore and i never really played it to the end on there.
How he could think the crafting was annoying. 11 maybe because it was far more involved than 8 and 9 but the alchemy pot was honestly just put ingredients in and wait then ding.
6:48 11S improved this emencly by giving you the option to buy most crafting ingredients and haveing that busts the game wide open and makes some encounters easier than the ps4 version
Well he did say why he dislikes it if you want to call "I dont like to interrupt my adventure at every campfire to craft stuff and interrupt the flow" a bad take then go ahead, i personally dislike crafting due to the grindiness it usually entails Which isnt made better when you start involving luck, multiple techniques and so on It just ends with you having to craft the same item multiple times if you want a perfect one
For someone who likes JRPGs so much, you sure seem to complain about pretty basic features of their design quite often, and offer only minimal, unsupported praise like, "the story was excellent" with no further detail.
Do you think that maybe the reason he doesn't go into further detail about the story is that he doesn't want to spoil it for people that haven't played the game yet? I think he offers insightful commentary about many aspects such as battle mechanics, characters, crafting etc.
Personally I'd say #1 dq11, #2 dq8, and #3 dq 5. All have great stories and characters. What can I say? I just really love crafting and dq11 is sooo beautiful. It stole my heart.
I thought 11's crafting was pretty good, simply because you dont have to do it as much as you'd think. Finding equipment around the world will suffice in battle, and you only have to craft if you want the best of the best. Im glad the crafting system was greatly improved in rereleases for the game.
Yeah I didn’t get where he was coming from on that one. My first play through I barely crafted unless to make something better. My second play through I crafted a ton and it didn’t really add that many hours in total.
i post my ranking under every top DQ list i see and it propably always looks different, because almost every DQ game is freaking great and most of them are very close to one another: 10) 2 - the only DQ game i'd only call "okay" 9) 1 - nice litte game 8) 3 - a masterpiece, but I got into it a little too late I guess 7) 6 - i liked the strange story 6) 7 - wow. that content! 5) 4 - very nice concept and cool characters (best with party chat!) 4) 5 - the tears didn't stop / Bianca best girl 3) 8 - the first console DQ i played and it was overall pretty magical 2) 9 - it was my first DQ and i still love it dearly 1) 11 - easily as it is the culmination and celebration of the whole franchise
First DQ I played was 11, I loved what I played of it but I do regret playing it on normal difficulty because it was way too easy, that's why I ended up giving up half way through. I'll give it another go on hard one day. Did anyone else feel that way with DQ11? Great list David, I'll jump straight to eBay to see if I can get DQ5
I’m playing it right now on the 3DS. It’s my first DQ game. I’m not usually moved by JRPGs, I gave up on Final Fantasy, but I’m liking this a lot. Thank god for the DS/3DS. What a great library
I really look forward to your uploads... you play my favorite genre of games and I love the detail you provide for each entry and list. I can't wait to see you continue to grow.
Team 7 member reporting for battle. I just wish the 3DS kept the original Sim's city building style. I loved being able to build a massive church on one file then a casino on the next.
I love dragon quest VIII it is by far my favourite I have over 300 hours on it and loved the huge storyline in it along with its humour and beautiful music, not to mention heartbreaking moments.
As a composer and at the same time a retrogame-lover/creator, there is also the circumstance i wanted to suck up all the early entries for their greatness overall, but also especially in seeing what they would be able to do with the NES Hardware. it's absolutely mind-blowing. Absolutely pristine pixelart and gorgeous Toriyama artwork, and still greatly represented by those few pixels. What great monster designs! And what Mr. Fugiyama was able to do with the 2a03 sound chip is nothing but breathtaking. Superb compositions and use of those few sound channels the NES had. I think the originals of I-IV are worth playing for that reason alone. I got to play the games in chronological order and you can really feel how everything got more and more polished. Currently i'm playing through Dragon Warrior IV and i'm in awe. Looking forward to V and VI, after which i'm certainly making a break. Great channel by the way! From the games i played yet III is by far my favourite, having great hopes for V which is next. I think i will stay with the originals whenever possible, that entails playing the fan-translations of the SFC games, i hope they're good.
I sorta like the crafting mechanics in 11 as a sense of actually forging the items yourself. At least in my view currently I'm still trying to beat at least most of the DQ games and while I beaten 1, 2, and 9, I will say currently 5, 3, & 9 are my favorites and maybe 11 will be added in when I continue my Adventure there in the switch version
Not a bad list overall, though I'm surprised 6 is below 7 given 7's length makes it hard to beat. And funnily enough I prefer the crafting in 9 and 11 to 8 as walking around is kind of an annoying way to pad it out. And super unpopular opinion time. I really like the first Dragon Quest. It's honestly so vanilla that it just works. It doesn't need to be incredible to still be quite nice, and I love the stats system based on the name you choose.
So glad I got into Dragon Quest I absolutely love this series. It has such a rich history and nearly every entry is a solid and fun experience! Great video man! I hope to make more dragon quest related content on my channel in the near future! :) keep up the good work!
Great video, David! I wasn't expecting anything since you said you were leaving for vacation, and here you are with a nuke! I am currently playing all the Dragon Quest titles, and 3 is such a massive step up, compared to 1 and 2, and I played the NES version! I can't play 4, right now, but I am looking forward to it!
@@forcepalmproductions9158 Since then yes, the NES version. I still prefer 3 over it because of the AI, but it's still a great game! There is actually a review on my channel! ;)
My first two Dragon Quest games were the first and third entries, and while they’re both good - especially the third one, it was only after I played 11 for the first time that I became a fan of the series.
its a shame enix never released dq 5 to the west right away. that game is easily just as good as chrono trigger if not better and its also a shame not many people know about it. if dq5 released in the us back in the 90s i believe the series would of been successful around the world but enix made the mistake of only releasing it in Japan. Im glad we at least got remake of it on the ds
I really don't understand why people don't like 7. The single stories were extremely varied, in settings and topics. It was like a different world every time, some even just there to set the mood, and tell the player: EVERYTHING can happen. I miss this in all other games. Also, the tine travel mechanic was not just used once per story, which was fantastic.
I need to play Dragon Quest V again. Back when I played V on the DS for the first time. I thought it was just fine and all, but I remember really enjoying VI. But VI is generally considered low on the totem pole, where as V generally tops people's lists. I'm curious if I'd still hold the same opinion today replaying them
Dude. Im literately in the same boat as you. I played them both (DQV & DQVI) as a kid in 2014 and i also remember enjoying 6 more. I'm also still curious if I'd still hold the same opinion today replaying them.
Fantastic video! Dragon Quest is my favorite series as well, and my own rankings are pretty close to yours. I would place 4 a bit higher, but I honestly love them all and it’s so hard to rank them!
I once was given Dragon Quest 9 and that was it for me. I fell in love with the sentinel idea, the crafting, and the deep storyline. Your mentor always reminded me of Krillen from Dragon Ball though.
The mentor character is awesome that game had some really cool moments. When you finally get the golden train! Solving each town's problem was implemented in a classic but fun way due to the worldbuilding. The world is reslly interesting with its generic aspects like the dark knight having small twists. Loved it. Played it tons.
I mean after playing the DQ11S demo, I didn’t really find crafting to be all that band tbh. If anything I found it fun to meticulously craft my items how I want them to be and make them as pristine as possible, and it’s SUPER convenient since you can not only purchase the materials for the recipe you have, making farming for them unnecessary unless you wanna save cash, but 11S made it so you can craft item ANYWHERE rather than just at campfires. So I personally feel like you were a bit harsh on that front tbh.
Crafting in XI was one of the best parts of the game for me. It's actually fun and requires some thought once you acquire more of the flourishes. It also gives a reason to explore the world because the recipes and materials are scattered around. Also, the best song in the soundtrack plays when you're at camp!
I just felt that by the end of the game you would open up a chest and get like 10 recipes at once, then when you got to camp you had to remember what recipes you got, find them in the many lists, hope to God you had the random garbage it called for just to make the weapon that you previously would have just gotten in the chest. And if you didn't have the ingredients you would have to write down exactly what you needed, look up where to find it, warp all over God's green Earth and hope that the spawn points would appear. I really hated it.
@@davidvinc I only played the definitive edition, so I'm assuming all the nice features and changes were made in that version especially like being able to buy missing materials that can be bought
Can’t wait for III remake this Thursday! Such a simple/traditional JRPG but something about this series is just so magical and charming. My first dragon quest was VIII for PS2 and I’ll never forget how it captivated me and how challenging it was for me at the time. It was so rewarding to finally complete. Thanks for sharing!
I love your channel David! Keep up the good work. Dragon Quest was my first RPG too, and I've been playing RPGs almost exclusively ever since. My Faves are XI, VIII, then V BTW.
I’ve Always been more of a final fantasy fan than a dragon quest fan. But I have played DQ 1, 7, and 8 and I really enjoyed 8. It had one of the best stories and the gameplay was delightfully grindy.
while I understand that these are his order of favorites, I believe that he was unduly influenced by his hatred of crafting, which in my mind is one of the best things to ever happen to dragonquest. 8 and 11 are my one and two, respectively, with nine being at the bottom, and 5 being fourth. otherwise, a good video.
It takes you 150 hours to beat DQ7??? Even the Playstation version the first time I played it didn't take that long for me and I screw around a lot when I play these games so I wasn't trying tp speed through it either. I guess that just depends on the individual but I actually think DQ11 is a longer game than DQ7 when you factor in side content. DQ7 is pretty slim as far as post-game stuff.
Hi David, Just got through DQXI and I absolutely adored it. I've played IV and V before, loved them too, but I really want to play the first three games. What versions should I play? Switch, GBC or Super Famicom? Are there any quality of life additions GBC or Switch have over Super Famicom?
5. Dragon Quest(The First RPG I ever bought, played and beat as a kid. Smb3 was my first game though I beat but 25 Bucks used for Dragon Warrior at a Game Store that no longer exists and I got it in the early 90s when like FF2/4 released for the SNES but I had no idea even of The Final Fantasy Series all that well then I was pretty young in 1992ish haha) 4. Dragon Quest 3(When the series really started getting good) 3. Dragon Quest 8(Yangus: Please suck the poison outta me arse, Guv!) 2. Dragon Quest 5(Still playing but it's THAT good) 1. Dragon Quest 11(Mordegon. Lol did I laugh but he won me over man and it's the best out of the series ngl)
DQ 7 because longest rpg Ive played (grinded like the world was ending) spent more sleepless nights and got my 1st F in school ever (Algebra) over it ..and enjoyed every bit.
Your RPG prowess is ridiculously good. Definitely why I watch your videos. Probably just me, but DQ XI music got to me. The same music reused for every scenario, which made the more intense situation fall flat with the comical music. Then the seconds act felt like a slap to the face... but thats just me! I will give you that the skill tree system was really well done though!
DQ3 is my favorite but only because I haven't played through V yet! Also, David, please do a video for the best DQ spin-offs! There are so many and it'd be great to hear your thoughts on them.
I couldn't get into 7 for some reason. Would have placed 6 above it. 9 and 11 are excellent but didn't quite feel like a DQ game the way that 3 - 8 do.
Having only played 1, 8, 9 & 11 I've heard from you about how good 3 is am I'm wondering which version besides the mobile (don't have the money to get it) and the Switch (same as with the mobile) you would recommend getting? (I'm emulate it on my Android phone). Love hearing your thoughts on rpg games, it gives me some good ideas on games to play. I tend to have a short attention span and get bored easily unfortunately, this I'm currently playing about 50+ rpg games atm. 😥
I'm playing dq11 right now and I only came here wanting to here you yap about your opinion on the game lol. I might be missing it but did you ever do a review on dq11? I see the let's play you did. I'm curious about who your favorite party was and whatnot haha
When DQ 6, 7, and 4 landed near the bottom you crushed me 😂 Always loved those games. Haven't played the original 3 or 11. I guess they'll never be moved to DS now so I'll probably have to get a Switch in the future (assuming they remake DQ 1-3 for it)
As far as DQ8 is concerned which do you prefer - PS2 or 3DS? Is the portable version comparable to DQ7 treatment where they really tightened pacing and such?
For me I would have to say Dragon Quest III is my favorite with V being second and VIII to finish out the top three. The first two hold a special place in my heart as well along with the entire series. I hope to play XI soon.
I love that you did a top 10 for a series with 10 entries. :P That being said, the only 3 Dragon Quest games I've played are your bottom 3, so I guess it's time to give this series another chance!
I love 11 so much, yes the weapon making is slow but my God it's amazing and full of good times. My most favorite character is Sylvando cause he's so amazing and has a very interesting storyline of something about him. Also I always wanted to try out Dragon Quest 3 but in the NES version cause it looks fun.
I disagree in DQXI, i'm playing it right now and really like the crafting system, i have no problem with that at all! I can't tell my experience about the whole game because i don't finished it yet, but i am really having a good time with it
DQ3 was the very first DQ game I've ever played and even beat. I then went on to DQ1, 2, then beat DQ4 and recently finished DQ 5. Currently, I'm starting out DQ6, and I feel that in my opinion, it's one of the better ones. DQ3 may have been my first DQ game that I've beaten, but I agree that Dragon Quest 5 totally deserves that #1 spot. The story, music, and gameplay are just beautiful! It's my personally favorite DQ game.
Dragon quest 5.. The hero was my golem.. With drums of war... Best party in the game was 3 golems and one king cure slime with meteorite braces. The main characters and other humans had nothing on them.
I really hope we see some of the remakes for the Dragon Quest series on modern consoles. I'm only able to play the series with rom hacks currently on a retropi. Currently my personal favs are DQ5, DQ8, DQ11 so far. I haven't tried 2, 3, 9 or 10 (obvious reasons) but i hope I'm able to play all of them one day.
This Christmas, I’m gonna get dragon quest 11. It was a great demo, so I’m looking forward to play this game. What dragon quest game should I play next though?
@@cloudstrifex88 The 3DS Versions is on paper the better game, but I liked the orchestrated music on the PS2 much more... Here the differnce ruclips.net/video/OA_KydHlyVI/видео.html
I hope I can give a fresh take on why the structure of VI is the way it is and hopefully instill some new appreciation for it. The second half of the game seem random, but all of the events are related to the concept of self-discovery. The purpose of the second half of the game is stated quite clearly right at the beginning when the queen asks you to *find yourself*, both in a literal and metaphorical sense. You do literally find yourself! But the hero also "finds himself" in all the scenarios he completes. They aren't random, they all have a moral and lesson, usually related to dreams and aspirations. The dream metaphors cut deep all throughout the game, it is rather cohesive and internally consistent throughout. To give one example, the town of Aridea contains the moral lesson of knowing "which dreams to chase". The town is distracted by utopian visions of the isle of smiles, to the point where they have forgotten what they actually need to do around the town to survive. The lesson is not to chase unrealistic dreams. "What is to good to be true, is" The scenario with the prince is a pretty straightforward message about conquering your fears to become who you really are. And so on, the scenario of the mermaid has two lessons: 1) follow your dreams even if others don't understand them and 2) know when it can be helpful to give up a dream (where the masked lover has to give up his love in order for her to live a better life). And so on, when the hero solves all these scenarios, he becomes closer to finding himself, and the story culminates in his own self discovery. After finding the statue, he learns who he really is, not just of his ideal self, and yet the journey there to find himself incorporated his ideal self into his real self. Remember, the hero asks himself "are we going to become one or will one of us disappear" - this is the fear of becoming something new, the anxieties changing your old self. I personally think the game is very coherent and very well written, but I think it's the kind of game that because of it's large scope it can be very easy to lose track of the story and thus miss details that make up a larger theme.
Serious question, I’ve played “DQ5” and loved it, but never finished it on my DS. (Can’t remember why). I want to finish it, do you recommend the PS2 or DS version?
@@davidvinc Thanks!!! I think I’ll get the PS2 version up & running and see which appeals to me the most! (For some reason I also never knew how influential “DQ3” was, been watching your LP and trying my best to wait for the new 2D-3D HD release!)
11 is my favorite by far. It addresses controversial topics in a tasteful manner like coming out. Ala Sylvando. The ability to change between 2d and 3d is amazing and hearkens back to oldschool DQ. Plus there is so much to do. I love the combat the classes and the progression system. However i disagree with Davids assertion that the crafting is a waste of time. The game offers you an option to buy the needed materials. Its not like its hard to make money in game. In fact its painfully easy. The crafting is rewarding and gives you a sense of achievement when you get your first +3 item. So dont let that dissaude anyone from playing. Try it the characters are fantastic and the voice acting is top notch. Its a must play.
Great video! Here’s my list 10: DQ 9: DQ II 8: DQ IX 7: DQ IV 6: DQ VII 5: DQ III 4: DQ XI 3: DQ VIII 2: DQ VI 1: DQV Also VIII and IX have the best music, VIII, IX and X are the peak of Sugiyama.
I've always liked that Dragon Quest has stuck with swords and sorcery settings and stays closer to pen-and-paper RPGs as opposed to Final Fantasy, which has pretty much gone in a sci-fi direction. My top two favorites DQ games are III and V with IV in a close third place. Growing up, we all played the first game, which was known as Dragon Warrior at the time. It was ubiquitous. I think free versions came with a subscription to Nintendo Power. The second game was a big deal because you had multiple party members and you fought multiple monsters in an encounter. The game had some growing pains for the series, though. It takes forever for your party to become balanced. There's a large world to explore, especially with the ship, but much of it consists of huge landmasses with little else on it but monsters to grind on. Even Alefgard makes an appearance again, but the only places you can visit are the starting town and the Dragon Lord's old castle. But III completely fixed all of those growing pains. The world was expansive and there was so much to do. And it first introduced the day-night mechanic and used it to great effect. Breath of Fire had a day-night mechanic, but it really didn't do anything with it except close the shops at night. But in Dragon Warrior/Quest 3, every town took on a different life when you visited it at night. And there were certain things you could only do at night, like interact with the NPCs in the ghost town or the pirate hideout. The game really revolutionized RPGs.
IV is the best but I feel like the only person who feels that way. It's not the most grand or epic entry but to me it's easily the most solid and airtight. Every character is likable, the chapter based structure is brilliant and makes all the characters actually feel like... characters rather than just "oh, sure, ill join you I guess" drones of most RPGs. And Psaro is easily the best villain in the franchise due to having actual motivations and being somewhat tragic / sympathetic as well. It feels like a children's book or a fairy tale overall while also being one of the first RPGs that I feel like was truly self-aware / reflecting on the tropes of the genre (see: torneko's chapter). I love 5 and 11 as well but I hope more westerners get around to playing the entire series. Great vid
My ranking (Based on the ones I've played): 10. Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 9. Dragon Quest Builders 8. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies 7. Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation 6. Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen 5. Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past 4. Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime 3. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age 2. Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride 1. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
im not a big DQ fan and the only DQ i played and completed is the DQ8 which i really enjoyed. now is super interested with DQ5. but dont have a 3ds. is DQ5 in ps1 good?
I’m really surprised so many lists have DQ4 so low. I really liked that game and thought the final boss was epic with all the different forms. DQ 5 is really good and the story is deep. I have played 6, 7, or 11 yet but I’m hoping to this winter
As someone whos always been a fan of FF, I've been thinking a lot recently of DQ. It's always been the "other FF" for myself and my friends, but I really want to jump into the series lately. Thanks for the list to help me decide which ones I might like the most.
Your videos are kinda like snacks. I could eat'em constantly. I mean, watch them. My list would be similar, though for me 3 tops over 5, but only for nostalgia's sake and having played 3 with my brothers, naming our team after ourselves. 5 has a much more gripping story and I love the marriage aspect, especially with the last minute proposal in the DS remake... though I still always choose Bianca cause she's blonde like my girlfriend. I like the crafting in 11. It got a lot easier when I realized I could heat the item being crafted multiple times to make strikes do more, allowing my greater control. I enjoyed making +2/+3 weapons and armor fairly consistently. You can ignore it for the early game too, but obviously they intend for you to do it. my one gripe with 11 is I don't like the main character's look. D:
I really loved this list, but probably because it's basically my ranking as well haha. I personally would put DQ3 slightly over V, but a lot of that's personal preference. I'm just glad to see a Western DQ fan that appreciates just how mind-blowingly good DQIII is, even 32 years later.
Dragonquest IX was fun to do the timed challenge for as well :) 8 hours to beat the main game I think it was. Sadly nintendo keeps removing online support for old games so you can only do some of the extra content by downloading save files or save editing. Very fun game :) A lot of broken things to exploit in the game too :D
Well done and well put, will you ever talk about dai no dabouken (the adventures of dai) it is my favorite nostalgic anime and manga, based of course out of dragon quest with the score of Dragon quest 3
Thanks David! Loved this video. Would love more in depth videos on each dragon quest game in the future. I’m just now getting into the series (and oooh boy did I start at a bad time ***those DS prices are insane!!!!) but I’m determined to play through the majority of them over the next several years and just managed to buy a copy of each main entry except for X because... you know, Japan only MMO. Sigh.
DQ5 was not the first game to have players pick a bride and have time truly pass. Phantasy Star 3 on the Sega Genesis did this back in 1990. In fact, you picked a bride twice which affected which character you would play as over three generations. This is why it was called “generations of doom”. Anyway, great video. I have never played a Dragon Quest which brought me here. :)
God damn another great list. You inspire me to do RPG vids. Anyways, I agree with your list for the most part. DQ5 is not only a great RPG but just one of the best stories ever told. I personally may put DQ4 a little higher but as long as 5 is number 1. Masterfully subverts expectation and I’ve never cared about characters more than in that game.
He said 11 had a world map, calm down, though he said it's only when your on the ship. Also, he's an old geezer who wants every RPG to be old-school instead of inovating and/or using shortcuts like "select an area" world maps. He also HATES crafting for no reason even if the crafting is extremely simple just because it's crafting and he would rather have you just get everything from chests or buy them instead of finding ingredients and then using them make things.
@@krimsonkatt he named reasons for his hatred of crafting .-. Valid ones infact, sure theyre personal opinions that you might not share but arent all reasons technically just that? Edit: sectionated areas do have a different feel than fully open worlds i personally dont care too much tho aslong as the loading times arent unbarably long
Interesting list, surprised how you feel about the crafting in DQ11 (I get it for 9 though). I think it would be the following for me: 1,2,6 ,4,3,9 ,5,7,8 ,11 Surprised how 7 was relatively low, although it’s definitely not the best paced game tbh. (Playing it on 3ds was my first time so that definitely influenced things). And 5,7,8,11 are difficult for me to rank. I think 8 and 11 are equally good and 5 and/ or 7 may rank higher on a good day.
Hayo, retro gamer here lookin' for a simple recommendation. I'm here after the Smash Bros. character announcement, and would like to know where to start playing this industry significant series. _Which entry will give my friends and I the broadest impression of the franchise-??_

Agreed first playthrough I did not craft at all xD 2nd one I did and got all the recipes
i post my ranking under every top DQ list i see and it propably always looks different, because almost every DQ game is freaking great and most of them are very close to one another:
10) 2 - the only DQ game i'd only call "okay"
9) 1 - nice litte game
8) 3 - a masterpiece, but I got into it a little too late I guess
7) 6 - i liked the strange story
6) 7 - wow. that content!
5) 4 - very nice concept and cool characters (best with party chat!)
4) 5 - the tears didn't stop / Bianca best girl
3) 8 - the first console DQ i played and it was overall pretty magical
2) 9 - it was my first DQ and i still love it dearly
1) 11 - easily as it is the culmination and celebration of the whole franchise
I agree
First DQ I played was 11, I loved what I played of it but I do regret playing it on normal difficulty because it was way too easy, that's why I ended up giving up half way through. I'll give it another go on hard one day. Did anyone else feel that way with DQ11? Great list David, I'll jump straight to eBay to see if I can get DQ5
I actually thought it was really hard on normal😂😂
It does get more challenging and you can avoid grinding to add to the difficulty
For me it was balance, i don’t like when the game forces grinding (but is fhe first game i have fun grinding, so...)
@@GusmaoPedro the grinding was annoying but became fun for me especially when I got metal slimes😂

Dragon Quest 5 is simply the best. Must convert everyone ^_^
I’m playing it right now on the 3DS. It’s my first DQ game. I’m not usually moved by JRPGs, I gave up on Final Fantasy, but I’m liking this a lot. Thank god for the DS/3DS. What a great library
And it is home to the greatest song Sugiyama ever composed. Nimzo.
I really look forward to your uploads... you play my favorite genre of games and I love the detail you provide for each entry and list.
I can't wait to see you continue to grow.
7 is my favorite and we can totally fight right now.
& on 3ds looks 😘😘😘😘
Team 7 member reporting for battle. I just wish the 3DS kept the original Sim's city building style. I loved being able to build a massive church on one file then a casino on the next.
I liked that one a lot too. :p
Well 7 was great on ps1.the remakes its good... The chat in battle and outside its gone. And a loot of features.
It’s like the “Majora’s Mask” of the series. The story was so different, and it had one of the best soundtracks.
Dragon quest 8 the best !!! I love this game ! I Need this game
i mean... you can play it on pscx2 emulator on your pc so... yeah..
I picked up DQ8 last year on a recommendation and holycrap is it ever good. Sad I didnt play it as a kid
V and VIII are top list for me those were a masterpiece
Not a bad list overall, though I'm surprised 6 is below 7 given 7's length makes it hard to beat. And funnily enough I prefer the crafting in 9 and 11 to 8 as walking around is kind of an annoying way to pad it out. And super unpopular opinion time. I really like the first Dragon Quest. It's honestly so vanilla that it just works. It doesn't need to be incredible to still be quite nice, and I love the stats system based on the name you choose.
Me too!! The first Dragon Quest is so simple and cute.
I like it way more than 2 to be honest!
Dragon Quest Is One of these series were there isn't any bad game so opinion can and Will be different which Makes this series even Better
Dq 9 is my favourite
You gained my respect for listing DQIII so high. It's still my favorite DQ to date, and I've played most of them.
Yeah, this is going to be my last Top 10 Video until I get back from vacation. I leave in 10 days and will be gone for about a month.
I'm actually a fan of the NES version of III over the SNES version... It's the only original I unambiguously like better than the remakes.
Did you play it?
@@forcepalmproductions9158 Since then yes, the NES version. I still prefer 3 over it because of the AI, but it's still a great game! There is actually a review on my channel! ;)

I agree with you David. Dq5 is the best.
The game is still fun and engrossing after almost 25 years after its original release.
In no particular order: XI, III, V & VIII are easily the top 4. I like III for the nostalgia and XI as overall best game.
My first two Dragon Quest games were the first and third entries, and while they’re both good - especially the third one, it was only after I played 11 for the first time that I became a fan of the series.

1. DQ9
2. DQ6
3. DQ 8
4. DQ 7
5. DQ 4
6. DQ 5

DQ 7 and 8 aren't on the DS though, unless you mean 3DS.

its a shame enix never released dq 5 to the west right away. that game is easily just as good as chrono trigger if not better and its also a shame not many people know about it. if dq5 released in the us back in the 90s i believe the series would of been successful around the world but enix made the mistake of only releasing it in Japan.
Yeah I don’t really get it either, I personally feel 7 is one of my favorites.
Wow. Good timing with this upload. I actually beat Dragon Quest III around 2:00 AM this morning.
So how was it? Which version did you play.
@@forcepalmproductions9158 The SNES version with an English translation pack. It's by far the best way to play the best game in the series.
I need to play Dragon Quest V again. Back when I played V on the DS for the first time. I thought it was just fine and all, but I remember really enjoying VI. But VI is generally considered low on the totem pole, where as V generally tops people's lists. I'm curious if I'd still hold the same opinion today replaying them
DQ5 is an emotional rollercoaster. Loved it from start to end.
DQ6 is another generic RPG. The Dual Map World reminds me of Link 2 Past

DQ3 was my all time fave. spent all summer playing it on the GameBoy Color.
playing it on a snes emulator for the first time. Love it, even tho battles can be tiresome
@@Lwilibert It was a really good game
Dragon Quest VI was my first mainline DQ game although Monsters was my first so I have a soft spot for Terry.
I would’ve said that either Dragon Quest 8 or 5 were the best, but after playing DQ11, my opinion is changed. DQ 11 is an absolute masterpiece.
I think it should now be referred to as the Erdrick Quadrilogy since 11 is technically the first instance of Erdrick now.
Hi David,

you could get all of them except 9-11 on your phone and surprisingly they work like really well
Well 6 & 7 I can understand. But yeah. 4 is kinda low. It should be in the top 5 at least. Definitely above 9 IMO.
As far as DQ8 is concerned which do you prefer - PS2 or 3DS? Is the portable version comparable to DQ7 treatment where they really tightened pacing and such?
The pacing didn't really need improvement in 8, but they instead added some new playable characters to give you a reason to buy.
For me I would have to say Dragon Quest III is my favorite with V being second and VIII to finish out the top three. The first two hold a special place in my heart as well along with the entire series. I hope to play XI soon.
I love that you did a top 10 for a series with 10 entries. :P
That being said, the only 3 Dragon Quest games I've played are your bottom 3, so I guess it's time to give this series another chance!
My first Dragon Quest game was Dragon Warriors 3 for the Game Boy Color. It was very hard for me as a kid
It's my personally favorite DQ game.
love your videos, is there anyway you can make a video on the golden sun, sly cooper, lost planet, medabots, scooby doo the movie, or akibas series?
Dragon quest 5.. The hero was my golem.. With drums of war...
Best party in the game was 3 golems and one king cure slime with meteorite braces. The main characters and other humans had nothing on them.
I really hope we see some of the remakes for the Dragon Quest series on modern consoles. I'm only able to play the series with rom hacks currently on a retropi. Currently my personal favs are DQ5, DQ8, DQ11 so far. I haven't tried 2, 3, 9 or 10 (obvious reasons) but i hope I'm able to play all of them one day.

"What is to good to be true, is"
The scenario with the prince is a pretty straightforward message about conquering your fears to become who you really are.
Either one works, but you'll have to pull out the emulator and patch for the PS2 version.

10: DQ
9: DQ II
8: DQ IX
7: DQ IV
6: DQ VII

Great vid
Dragon Quest IX story was most fleshed out
What does that mean?
My ranking (Based on the ones I've played):
10. Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2
9. Dragon Quest Builders
8. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
7. Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation
6. Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen
5. Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past
4. Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime
3. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
2. Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride

im not a big DQ fan and the only DQ i played and completed is the DQ8 which i really enjoyed. now is super interested with DQ5. but dont have a 3ds. is DQ5 in ps1 good?
I’m really surprised so many lists have DQ4 so low. I really liked that game and thought the final boss was epic with all the different forms. DQ 5 is really good and the story is deep. I have played 6, 7, or 11 yet but I’m hoping to this winter
I loved everything about 11 except the voice acting for the mermaid queen
The co-op is so much fun!
Sigh.
9 is underrated and pretty awesome.
I Love your Videos David you are the Best :) By the way do you have a Face Book Page?
I don't get it when he says "the world map is gone", XI has a world map 😕
Considering he put it at 4th, I don't believe he actually played the game.
I think it would be the following for me:
1,2,6 ,4,3,9 ,5,7,8 ,11
Surprised how 7 was relatively low, although it’s definitely not the best paced game tbh.
