I had no idea that Dragon Quest VI on the ds was so rare. I bought it in like 2011 or 2012 and I never really played it until a few months ago. I'm kind of glad that I picked it up after playing Dragon Quest IX
Yeah same here, but in the UK it was pretty cheap when it came out. Bought it from GAME in like 2010 or 11 like you and never touched it until like 2016 or 17.
It still surprises me how many great games of DQ didn't go outside of Japan. I've seen a lot of fan translations of 5 but I couldn't imagine that the DS version was the first officially released one. I also would've loved to see the other Torneko games and Young Yangus in English...
The DS version of DQ6 was published by Nintendo rather than Square Enix which might explain the scarcity of copies. I guess Square Enix had lost faith in the series 'performance in the west and wasn't going to continue releasing them here after the DS release of 5.
Great video! When Square Enix had a sale on their website a few years ago, I was able to pick up a reprint of DQIV on for $15. I am hopeful that I’ll find the other two DS titles at a reasonable price someday
Thank goodness I came across Dragon Quest 9 in a shop just randomly, I know that if I didn't pick it up I would regret it later, it was the last copy there!
I REALLY hope square decides to port the mobile versions of DQ 4-6 to switch. I hate having to spend so much money just to be able to play through my favorite series.
I was out with my friends in LA one day a few months ago and found DQ8 3DS at a retro game store we passed by. I was so SO happy and immediately snagged it up brand new, for like $20. I keep the box displayed on my desk in my dorm and it’s been such a great game. Definitely try and find it before it fades into the aether like Mr. Chief said.
@@Trollosauras Yeah, I’ve beaten the game a long while ago in the 3 years since I made that comment. Just like he predicted, it certainly has gotten REALLY expensive. I think I just got it right at the sweet spot time where it was coming off of store shelves and clearance stocks maybe.

So glad I spent what little money I didn't even really have as back in high school to cop the entire zenithian trilogy. DQ 6 will likely never get sold though lol. Now I just have to get around to actually playing them... If only they'd port 4 over to the switch and add party chat!
Nice to find someone else who enjoys this franchise as much as I do. I had no idea that my copies of the mainline series on DS were so much. As for DW4, I bought it over 10 years ago on eBay and back then, I paid $60 for it loose. I even have the SFC versions of V and VI, PS2 version of V, and the PS4 version of X. I heard they were starting to open it up to the west so I bought a copy.
I still have my Dragon Quest v,vi, and ix for the ds with their player's guides. DQ VI was the last guide I seen for the main series I was upset that 7 and 8 didn't get one. Even the guy at GameStop was shock they didn't have a Player's Guide.
I love guides, they make playing the game a lot more enjoyable to me. The PS2 version of DQ8 has a guide. The version by Piggyback is excellent, one of the best guides I have seen. It might be a bit hard to find in the US though.
I love the animated sequence XD. Just seeing a smile in the car is just funny to me XD. But also great video. I need to buy a DW4 NES cartridge and not even play it
Just recently dug my DW 3 and 4 out of the closet, games still work. Going to do a replay of each for old times sake then might sell them both. Nice to know they still have value.
I'm not a collector but it was nice hearing you nerd-out about DQ. I also learned a lot about the franchise from watching this and its a really funny video. Out of all of these, I think the one I actually really want is DQ8 3DS
I own all of the ones that came out in Italy, from DQVIII on PS2 to DQXIS. I'm onlymissing DQMJ1 because I lost it when I was younger.. and now I can't find a copy
Ahem, i propose a solution: an unlocalized dragon quest game pack for all the unlocalized games, all edited so that the less important screen can be access from another menu or is shrunken and put into a corner, all of these ported onto one cartridge and brought over to the US. The only reason i refuse to emulate DS and 3DS games is because they were made for a specific 2 screen system which looks weird on a single screen.
I'm satisfied since I got 1,2,3, & 11 on switch, and 5,7,8,&9 on DS, I'll just wait for zenithia trilogy on switch, and 10 (hopefully) then ill be happy
Dragon Warrior was my first rpg, through the Nintendo Power subscription of course. I was entranced by that game over summer vacation. I think it might have been the first game I ever finished too, besides SMB. Now I'm sitting here playing DQXIS, loving it every bit as much as Dragon Warrior. I love the 2d throwback segments. Good video dude, thanks!
Lol of course you were spot on about DQ8 for 3DS. The value absolutely skyrocketed this year, with new copies going for upwards of $200 or more. Insane. Should have grabbed a copy when I had a chance.
I finally snagged IV after chasing it for 20 years. That was the first one I played - I had to sell 2 boxed Atari 2600 games, a pile of controllers, 2 boxed NES games, and a whole bunch of other stuff to get it from the local game shop - basically was a $156.00 trade in - well worth it. I could have had it boxed, new, for $11 bucks when I was a young Mario fan - still kicking myself for passing it up at Toy Liquidators when I was 11 back in 92', but I was not into DQ yet. With the other three I got lucky. I I bought in 1998 at a K-Mart that sold used/refurbished loose NES games for about $15.00. III was next from a local game store where I lived at the time for $35.00 in 2003, and then after that was II from the same game shop I got IV from for $56.00 about 2 years ago.. However, I don't buy these for value, I buy them because I want to play them, over and over again.
I bought a copy of DW3 NES as a gift for a friend. I was a bit short on cash so I ran home, got a bunch of junky games, and traded them in for credit. I have Tara's Adventure, but not Cobi's Journey. I saw a Japanese copy once, but held off on buying it only for it to get snatched up the next day. I only payed $15 for my copy of DW3 GBC I have all 3 DS remakes, and bought all of them before people realized how moderately rare they were so I paid the MSRP or lower. Held off on DQ8 3DS for a while because I briefly became disillusioned with the series due to Sugiyama but eventually snagged it used for about 30 bucks. Got Builders Switch for about $25 used. I feel like the only one I overpaid for was DW7 on PS1. I was able to get it for 40 bucks but they wanted 50, and only dropped the price because I was getting two other games (although they also threw in a free copy of Final Fantasy Legend)
After I finished the Erdrick trilogy all on mobile I bought DQ4, DQ5 and Rocket Slime on DS in this flea market though not physically, instead they were installed on my R4 DS cartridge which all cost around 30 Dirhmas as far as I remember (aka like 3 US dollars lol). I've finished 4 and Rocket Slime and currently nearing the kids portion of the game and loving all three of them especially 5.
Also while only new to the series thanks to Smash Bros I've been really enjoying the Dragon Quest binge, every game (yes 2 has its problems but it still counts) evolves the series in some way while also being stepping stones for the next one, 3 and 4 especially feel like templates that future games that I saw reviews use effectively but without completing throwing it out its own unique personality
I just recently got into this series. My first Dragon Quest game was VIII on the PS2 way back in 2006, with VII on 3DS. Just picked up XI for the Switch and I have a daunting task ahead of me if I want to play the rest of the games.
interesting thing here in mexico. Dragon quest 8 3ds and ps2 are the most common main line dq games over there PERIOD. Surprisingly the 3ds version sold a ton of copies over here so it's pretty common to find.
That's neat to hear the saga is doing well in some Latin America countries, I live in Honduras and here Dragon Quest games are very hard to find even the ones on the Nes and early Sony consoles, I only saw VIII for the 3ds in one store and even at the used video games stores or Facebook groups they are rare to see except for the DQ XI Switch version , the builders and heroes games for PS4
@@timedasher there is a reason for that, dq8 is a popular rpg tittle over here and given how popular the 3ds was, it's port is really cheep, the DS dq games are also really hard to get over here, but the prices are far cheeper compared to eBay Most dq DS games are worth 50 to 60 dollars over here
@@JoseAlberto-dh8pf I see, it's neat that VIII is well received there, and other DQ games as well I suppose the Toriyama artwork helps since Dragon Ball is very popular in Mexico, as for were I live I guess is because there's a lot of reading in RPG that they aren't popular but at least XII for Switch its getting fans introduced intro the franchise
@@timedasher my friend you have no I idea how popular dragon Ball z is here until you go to a flee market and see that 90% of bootlegs are from dragon Ball. Also RPGs on Nintendo are extremely sought after by collectors more than the play station line.

How about an updated mid-2021 version of this video? :-) Recently I decided I'd like a copy of DQV DS - oof. Absolutely out of control prices. One guy on Amazon wanted $600. I bought a JP copy for $53 in the meantime, until I can find a decent English copy. I'm so disappointed with myself that I didn't buy this during release time, and actually very shocked to find out that I didn't have it. I spent an absolute fortune on DS games during its run, both US and JP games. I honestly thought I had DQ IV and V DS remakes and couldn't believe that I didn't. I do have VI, plus the VII and VIII 3DS remakes, but kicking, kicking, kicking myself that I never picked up IV and V. I had better get my wallet out.... :-(
Dragon quest 8 was my first and I loved it me and dad would play it all the time and he created his own “guide” for me after he had beaten it countless times. Dragon quest sword almost made me throw “literally” my love for the franchise away.
And how the hell the price of ds version of DQV jumped from $60 to almost $250 within a year? Could anyone please explain this for me? It’s 2021 and very much impossible to find DQV under $100 with or without a box today 😫 ps. I recently got a hold of a ds copy of DQ IV for $95-insane price as well.
Cool I'm glad I got Dragon Warrior 4 cart when I saw it in UT at a game peddler that was awesome. And got some of those DS ones too but not the Realms one.
Well this is news to me. Didn't know having a complete copy of Dragon Quest 6 would be one of the rare games. Kinda funny that I also grab the guide as well.
*looks at my version of DQ6 for DS* huh...did not expect that it would be that rare. But when you mentioned the 3DS releasing the same year, the logic checked out. Very glad I got it at release
For my current DQ collection, i have the PS2 disc of 8. But it became too scratched to play anymore. Fortunately, i got the digital version of it's 3DS remake. I then got 1 on mobile. But then i got it again on Switch along with 2 and 3. 11S was delivered to me later that same day. I plan to get 7 on 3DS for christmas. After that, 4 on mobile, and try to get 5 and 6 on DS. I'll wait to see if 9 gets a remake, for it's Wifi features are discontinued.
Managed to get a lightly used copy of DQ6 DS with box and manual for around $40 like around 2016-ish and it sounds like a good thing I did. Also picked up 4 and 5 DS for like $20 NOS in a square enix store clearance sale around that time. Good stuff. I think I have all the US releases of the main series titles in one form or another but none of the spinoffs. I keep contemplating getting boxed XI S and importing X just so I can put the whole thing unbroken on a shelf. Need to get repro boxes for the game boy releases if I'm gonna do that tho.
I got the dq5 ds cartridge and instructions for free so I'm playing it right now. Oh damm I bought dq6 ages ago for cheap in a second hand shop, it has all the inserts and the Nintendo code thing still in there. Got real lucky there
The prices now are way higher. Crazy how expensive they got. They we’re dirt cheap when you made this video but now the DS games are very expensive. Especially DQ 4, 5 and 8. Better have deep pockets to buy those now.
That actually makes me glad I’ve kept my DS copy of DQ6, it’s only the cart cause it was used at GameStop years ago sitting at 35 bucks at the time. Never looked back, even if people don’t seem to like it, it’s actually my favorite along with 3 in the series.
Finally got DQ5 to complete my mainline DQ collection today (Ignoring Japan only DQ10) for $100, when it usually sells for around $280. Some people think im crazy for buying a DS game for that much, but I know in my heart it was worth it for one of the best games ever made.
I own all of the modern DQ games. I made sure to pick up VI when it came back in stock for $20 on Amazon a year after its release. IV and V I was able to find easy enough for $20 on Newegg at the time. I try to make sure I preorder every mainline DQ game even if I don’t have the time for them. For the PS4 spinoffs, I generally just wait until the price goes down which, as you pointed out in the video, is inevitable.
Dragon Quest 9 was my first game. I got it for my 11th birthday. Dragon Quest V would follow when I saw it in a pawn shop and bought it on sight. I would then buy 6 at Target not knowing it was a remake and would become rare in the future. I saw a copy of DQ 8 at a flea market but didn’t have the money or the PS 2 to buy it. 10-11 years of loving the game later and I have played all but 1, 2, 7, and 10.
I needed Dragon Quest 6 on the ds to complete my collection back in 2015. New copies were selling for $125 or so on Amazon. I found it at a Meijer in the DS case brand new for it's original price of $35. It was wild. I had looked at that same copy on the shelf there for years not knowing it was valuable. Glad I found that it must have been meant to be.
Took your advice and got the last copy of Dragon Quest VIII for 3ds. I’m betting the farm it’ll skyrocket in price this year (2020). Got it for a steal at the Walmart I work at for $24!

I paid 12 bucks for 4 in its box complete and got the whole lot of them for about 160 or 170 with Powerup Rewards.
Highly recommend you check your GameStop
I had no idea that Dragon Quest VI on the ds was so rare. I bought it in like 2011 or 2012 and I never really played it until a few months ago. I'm kind of glad that I picked it up after playing Dragon Quest IX
Yeah same here, but in the UK it was pretty cheap when it came out. Bought it from GAME in like 2010 or 11 like you and never touched it until like 2016 or 17.
I just prefer emulating the SNES version.
It still surprises me how many great games of DQ didn't go outside of Japan. I've seen a lot of fan translations of 5 but I couldn't imagine that the DS version was the first officially released one. I also would've loved to see the other Torneko games and Young Yangus in English...
We haven’t been eating for a long time
Just completed my DS/3DS Dragon Quest collection (4-9) this past holiday and 6 was definitely the hardest one to get.
The DS version of DQ6 was published by Nintendo rather than Square Enix which might explain the scarcity of copies. I guess Square Enix had lost faith in the series 'performance in the west and wasn't going to continue releasing them here after the DS release of 5.
I liked the animation and style of your DW3 game store segment. Would like to see more like it
Will keep it in mind for the future
My friend sold me DQVI and DQVIII for 14 bucks for both.. They're both loose, how much of a steal was this?
That’s really good for DQVI
You took advantage of your friend
@@LOSTLEAD8R his fault he decided to sell it to me, hell, I didn't even know it was worth that much.
DAMN BOI
Nice dude. Those games are rare . I hear DQVI is getting more expensive. I bought it for 40 bucks used at gamestop
Great video! When Square Enix had a sale on their website a few years ago, I was able to pick up a reprint of DQIV on for $15. I am hopeful that I’ll find the other two DS titles at a reasonable price someday
I just looked to check if I have DQ 6. I thought I bought them all and might have overlooked that one.... But I'm glad see it on my shelf sealed!
Would be great
Me too. Especially IV. That is my favorite Dragon Quest game. I like the chapter system. That makes it like it's 5 games in one.
No lie, you videos inspired me to go and play all the DQ games. The only games Im missing from the main series now are VI and VII!
Holy shit I am more happy that I bought the DQVIII remake as my birthday present a year ago
Chief said.
COR BLIMEY 20 DOLLARS!
@@tuskoub shit didnt notice it was 2 years ago, found his vid recently since I beat 11 then 8 now im gonna start 5. Been watching the DQ series with my wife called The Hero Yoshihiko and the Demon King's Castle (if you havent seen it which I doubt WATCH IT).
you deff got it at that sweet spot!
Also, about DQ8 PS2...
It's more expensive on Amazon, I'm not kidding
They’re overcharging likely. It should be cheap.
Amazon overcharges for retro games, don’t buy till you compare prices!
Jokes on you, I have dragon quest builders on switch
ON DIGITAL
I have it physical. Store I worked at had it but mine was a Gamestop preorder.
I bought builders on switch discounted new and sold it. Now I want to play it again. I’ll be playing more now than I did when I first got it.
Glad I didn't get DQ VI for those ridiculous prices. Good video!!
I need to buy a DW4 NES cartridge and not even play it
Glad you like that part haha
Hope you can find another copy
Great content for a comparatively niche community, that's worth a sub. Keep it coming, dude
in europe, all these games are much cheaper. if you search european ebays, you can find great offers.
It’s mostly the NA copies that are expensive
eg. Dragon Quest Builders Switch in Europe costs like $20-$25
You need to update this, because the pandemic caused a massive price boom in retro games. DQIII alone is going for over $100.
I managed to find a used Canadian version of dq9 for around $17, which I think is a pretty good deal
I'm depressed that Dragon Quest Monster Joker 3 didn't come to the west. Considering the 3Ds is dead now, I know it'll never get localized.
Yep, well there’s always the fan translation
Ahem, i propose a solution: an unlocalized dragon quest game pack for all the unlocalized games, all edited so that the less important screen can be access from another menu or is shrunken and put into a corner, all of these ported onto one cartridge and brought over to the US. The only reason i refuse to emulate DS and 3DS games is because they were made for a specific 2 screen system which looks weird on a single screen.
I'm satisfied since I got 1,2,3, & 11 on switch, and 5,7,8,&9 on DS, I'll just wait for zenithia trilogy on switch, and 10 (hopefully) then ill be happy
yeah I remember my bro and I seeing DQ9's commercial and it looked like DBZ so my bro picked it up. Oh btw can u do a review of Blue Dragon?
That’s something I’ll eventually do
sackchief yay
Dragon Warrior was my first rpg, through the Nintendo Power subscription of course. I was entranced by that game over summer vacation. I think it might have been the first game I ever finished too, besides SMB. Now I'm sitting here playing DQXIS, loving it every bit as much as Dragon Warrior. I love the 2d throwback segments. Good video dude, thanks!
Lol of course you were spot on about DQ8 for 3DS. The value absolutely skyrocketed this year, with new copies going for upwards of $200 or more. Insane. Should have grabbed a copy when I had a chance.
Got Dragon Quest 8 for the 3DS a couple of days ago. This video gave me the idea to buy it before I becomes the 3DS equivalent to DQ6. Worth it.
And now...all prices are double and more. Still good video, love your content
I struggled to find a store with 8 but after I got it, i kept bumping into it a Walmart and also 7
I finally snagged IV after chasing it for 20 years.
I know that feel
I bought a copy of DW3 NES as a gift for a friend. I was a bit short on cash so I ran home, got a bunch of junky games, and traded them in for credit.
I have Tara's Adventure, but not Cobi's Journey. I saw a Japanese copy once, but held off on buying it only for it to get snatched up the next day.
I only payed $15 for my copy of DW3 GBC
I have all 3 DS remakes, and bought all of them before people realized how moderately rare they were so I paid the MSRP or lower.
I have DQ8 on 3DS with box it's a awesome also adorable animated skit lol that guy is basking on what could have been yours XD
There’s always the mobile ports for a cheaper alternative
interesting thing here in mexico.
@@timedasher there is a reason for that, dq8 is a popular rpg tittle over here and given how popular the 3ds was, it's port is really cheep, the DS dq games are also really hard to get over here, but the prices are far cheeper compared to eBay
Most dq DS games are worth 50 to 60 dollars over here
@@JoseAlberto-dh8pf I see, it's neat that VIII is well received there, and other DQ games as well I suppose the Toriyama artwork helps since Dragon Ball is very popular in Mexico, as for were I live I guess is because there's a lot of reading in RPG that they aren't popular but at least XII for Switch its getting fans introduced intro the franchise
@@timedasher my friend you have no I idea how popular dragon Ball z is here until you go to a flee market and see that 90% of bootlegs are from dragon Ball.
Also RPGs on Nintendo are extremely sought after by collectors more than the play station line.
@@JoseAlberto-dh8pf Oh yes, I have made trips to Mexico and I saw many merchendise, I really liked a time when a guy was selling on the street some hand made statues of DBZ characters they were made of thin can and clay, they looked amazing, sadly the size was big so they most likely wouldn't pass at the airport
I'm glad I got my copy of DQVIII back in June 2017. I wasn't expecting it to go out of print that quickly.
It’s 2021 and very much impossible to find DQV under $100 with or without a box today 😫
ps. I recently got a hold of a ds copy of DQ IV for $95-insane price as well.
13:32 ah yes my favorite dragon quest game.
I didn't catch that joke at first lmao
Went to a retro game store near my college and found DQVI for $30. Needless to say, I bought it haha
Yeah i actually bought DQVIII a couple months ago for $30 at a game shop of mine, it would be cool to see if it actually got rare eventually
Man thank goodness I got DQ8 on 3DS when it came out because I had to pay some good money to get DQ6. Anyway great video.
Thank you
For my current DQ collection, i have the PS2 disc of 8.
Scarp the DS plan. The mobile sale got me to get both of them on mobile.
DQVI is the one Mainline DQ game I don’t have complete in box :/ (North American)
Loved the Video, very funny and informative
Glad you liked it
Glad i got into DQ when the ds games first came out, especially 6 now
Managed to get a lightly used copy of DQ6 DS with box and manual for around $40 like around 2016-ish and it sounds like a good thing I did.
I got DQXI on DS a while back for 20€. Watching this made me feel good about it.
I know how hard it is to find DQV, not a single copy in my while region, and way more expensive elsewhere.
I brought my entire set of NES Dragon Warrior for 75$ in 2010.....Now DW 4 can make my a bit of profit alone.
dq 8 was my first DQ game and I still love it to this very day I have both the PS2 version and the 3DS version
Great video as always sack!
Thank you!
I'm so upset I had dragon quest 6 brand new for like 60$ but my parents sold it when I got in trouble. I was so young and happy xd.
I'm glad I found a brand new copy of Dragon Quest VIII on the 3DS for a little over $40 online back in August.
I have all the dragon quest games released here in the states including dragon warrior 4 and torneko
Nice work 👍
Dragon Quest 9 was my first game.
