  • So far it seems I'm only playing the "Good" Dragon quest games. Hehe. This is certainly a great entry point! I hope you enjoy my thoughts and review of Dragon Quest VIII. This is my second ever Dragon Quest game coming from DQ 5!
" This is a portable version of the classic RPG, with added content and other 3DS enhancements.
Set off on an unforgettable adventure with Yangus, the bandit with a heart of gold, Jessica, the high-born magical minx, and Angelo, knight and lothario, by your side! Players are able to capture monsters that inhabit the battlefield in this role-playing adventure. These beasts differ from the creatures you'd normally encounter in battles, as they have special names and abilities unique to them. Once a monster has been scouted, it's added to a growing arsenal of creatures that can then be assembled into teams of three for use as support characters in battle."

The beast with 7 heads and 10 horns coming up out of the waters, multi-headed means political, singular is religious (being the anti-christ which is Satan).
7 dominions throughout the earth, 10 kings/world leaders, the waters are the people expecting to be raptured, for it will be as in the days of Noah, those who are taken abide under God's wrath.
False messiah comes 1st in Rev. 12 Satan and the fallen angels will be cast to earth, he is the son of perdition (perdition means to be put to death, he is the only 1 who has already been judged).
The harlot, the woman spoken of is that great city Babylon, babel=confusion (Satan is the author of confusion), God said "to come out of her.
It's not until the son of perdition, after the 2nd woe, on the 7th trumpet is when Jesus returns, the Lord's Day (that 1000yr period, the day John was taken to, even past where were at now), when Jesus returns the dead will rise and we will all (meaning everyone to have ever lived) be in the spirit.
Yeshua Messiah will reign here on in the new Heaven in the earth till the Great White Throne judgement, then Satan will be let loosed a little while because God is fair and everyone will have a chance and they will be tested by him and some will still even then choose to follow/worship Satan.
God is that consuming, you don't burn in Hell forever and ever, your name is blotted out, no longer existing, period, all souls return to whenst they came.
The mark of beast in the forehead are those without the seal of God in their foreheads (meaning the truth), the mark on their hand are those doing the work of the beast, not a tattoo of 666 or a computer chip implanted.
The 1st beast received a deadly wound on 1 of it's heads, a disagreement via the supernatural entity being Satan when he is cast out of Heaven entirely will come to solve the problem (world peace), no nations to wage war against 1 another we/they will all be as 1, a 1 world rule, under Satan (the beast system).
The religious beast who was out of the earth (dust/ made flesh) and cast to the earth, the anti-christ isn't a man, it's Satan (looks like a lamb, spake like a dragon).
He exercises all the powers of the 1st beast (to take advantage, coming to make peace), and when the dragon healed the wound of the 1st beast, all worshipped it (trample like cattle).
Churches will become the harlot and whore after her, and oh how so difficult it will be to speak/preach against peace/ the wound was by the sword and it is truth, for they/ the world will hate you/us for standing on God's Word till the end.
Satan uses men, the churches will do the work for him, they'll think your preaching against Jesus, our Messiah to come.
      Amen.
      Ephesians 6:12
12 For we wrestle not against* flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

My first dragon quest game. I started playing back in 2009 when I was 8. Over ten years later I can still very much enjoy this game. The ps2 soundtrack really makes the world feel alive and I’ve loved every aspect of the game over the years. It’s perfect. 10/10 no complaints from me.

a note about the grindyness. I think at this point in the series they assume that you know a good Metal Slime/Liquid Metal Slime strategy. Metal Slime hunting was such a thing in the earlier games that they just sort of assume you do it. It reaaaaaally speeds up leveling.

    • @PelvicGaming
      @PelvicGaming  3 года назад +22

Oh, I *absolutely* did that, but it's sooooooooooooooooo annoying cause they usually run away. Even with slime weapons, crit stats/weapons they just...always...run... I spent HOURS hunting metal slimes WITH DOUBLE BUBBLE. (I got all 10 King Metal Slimes but still... it was such a SLOG)

    • @MrTableDesk
      @MrTableDesk 3 года назад +7

@@PelvicGaming I always had best luck with the spear ability Thunder Thrust. There's a similar one for hammers, but I can't remember it's name. They'll miss half the time, but Crit when it does hit. But yeah if they decide to run, there's not much you can do, lol.

    • @marinkecman7811

Does this game not have what dq4 had? You could use an item in battle to restart the battle if metal slimes all ran away.

    • @KainiusTheGreat
      @KainiusTheGreat Год назад +2

@@PelvicGaming You MAY know this by now but in most Dragon Quest games Holy Water ALWAYS does at least 1 damage to metal monsters (Slime/Babble/King) making the grind easier. Have your characters that have metal attacks use those attacks and the characters that don't have the attacks use Holy Water! Also, there are some weapons that do insta-death attacks that work on metals...what ever character can use them should have their agility (speed?) stat boosted so they always go first in battle. Hopefully this is new info for you and it inspires you to replay some of these games!

Amazing review :D always happy to see positive talk around this gem of a game. Oh, I almost forgot, I wanted to let you (and anyone that reads this) know how to get more party interactions. At every new area or story point, or even if youre just at an interesting place. If you press start to get advice from the party, they always chime in on their opinions at the time. Yangus, Jessica, and Angelo actually do have full conversations amongst themselves. If you keep checking them, you'll def get that party growth. Princess Medea even has quite a few missable cutscenes with the main hero if you don't take her to the mystic lake every now and again to change her back for a couple minutes. By the end of the game the hero and medea's relationship feels much more fleshed out if you got to see their interactions in those cutscenes.
Ya gotta kinda try more than notmal, but there really is quite a lot of party growth. Sadly 70% of it is completely optional and most people miss out on some truly great moments.

I just wrapped up playing DQVIII 3DS for the first time and stumbled across your review of it. I could not agree more about how good the monster designs are, easily one of my favorite aspects about dragon quest. Seeing familiar normal monsters in any other JRPG series usually elicits a 'Oh I remember that enemy, neat.' But with Dragon Quest I always enjoy seeing the staple monsters from slimes to the Cyclops while recognizing less used monsters elicits a 'Hey I remember that enemy from [relevant entry]!'
As someone who did do the level grinding to level 99, its much smoother thanks to the addition of Red and Morrie. The hero and yangus get 50% accuracy but 100% Crits moves through spears and axes respectively which makes metal king hunting fairly easy as is. But with Red and a liquid metal sword she can mop the floor with metal kings in 1-2 turns when she gets Blade Cascade while Morrie also gets a crit focused move through his club skill tree. Obviously grinding ain't for everyone but they definitely did make it easier (Though still a bit time consuming)

I just found you because your DQ5 review and then came to this. Even if I don't agree with everything you say, I understand your reasoning and appreciate your direct criticism. If anything, I wish you made your videos longer, I wouldn't mind watching your takes for a longer time, specially for an RPG that is 100+ hours easily.
DQ8 was my first DQ game and I totally loved it, played it for 180 hours and I think I didn't even reach Level 100. Definitely the post game content is totally worth it and makes for a more satisfying ending, I mean, that ending is like one hour of gameplay, I felt I was watching the ending of a great story that I didn't want to end so I talked to every single NPC available. I was surprised and happy when I found about the extra ending on the 3DS version. Even if the PS2 version has orchestrated music (which I find superior, just like you mentioned) I'd go for the 3DS version today just because the PS2 version loads A LOT, I mean, I got used to it, but I remember wanting to have a HDD attached and install it there to reduce load times, which I assume the 3DS version doesn't have.
Good review, subscribed now. Looking forward to more.

I think there's a distinct difference between item management sucking and you not liking it. Dragon Quest handles item management the way it does, especially with the individual character inventories and characters needing to hold key items, etc, because the creator wants you to feel some of the weight of the adventure. It's also a tool to give the player additional strategy in how they pick and choose what is or isn't worth carrying. And the key items require you to be more involved in the story and gameplay and actual remember what things are and how to use them, rather than relying on the game virtually playing itself outside of combat, like many games these days.
So many design elements in the series focus on that immersion level, just trying to get the player to be there for the experience rather than mindlessly rushing through. And honestly, though at one time I did find parts of that more tedious, I think it's a very positive element about Dragon Quest in general and I've come to really appreciate it.
And finally, it's nice to see you give the game an 8/10 rather than a 10/10. Dragon Quest VIII was the first DQ game to gain any real popularity in the west and nostalgia has driven it to a point where many western fans blindly claim it as the pinnacle of the franchise (often having not played the others at all or at least not many), but you came at it with fresh eyes and not years of nostalgia tucked away and appraised it more fairly.
Honestly, I might even say it's more a 7-7.5 for me. In Japan, it's often at or near the bottom of popularity polls. Anyway, still a fun game and worth playing. Looking forward to your future Dragon Quest and Tales reviews.

It's just that the rest of the games are just TOO good haha! MAYBE if I hadn't played DQ4, DQ5 and DQ6 before it it would have been higher, though DQ5 might still have been higher as that was the best story-wise IMO. Though DQ9? Yeah, that still is my #1 as its character creation, Paper Mario-esque gameplay with lots of episodic stories (plus an original main one), and battling all villains from previous DQ games, something I sometimes wish a major FF game had, well, nothing has still topped that.

@@PelvicGaming Satan returns with the nephilim, (naphi in Hebrew), the fallen angels for Jesus said in Matthew 26:6-38 in that area it will be as in the days of Noah. In Revelation 12 Satan is released by Micheal and the fallen angels will return with him, God shortened the 7yr period to a 5 month period (spilt 7 in half to 2 3.5yr period/ you split the 5 month period up 2 2.5 half months), for the elects sake or no flesh would be saved Mark 13:20, because that's how good our enemy is, snap of a finger to send lightning down from the heavens performing wonders. I study from and study with those who purely teach God's Word from the Hebrew (OT) manuscripts/ and Greek (NT) manuscripts because if your not doing that then your never going to know. Genesis 6:2, Genesis 6:4, Job 1:6, Job 2:1, and Job 38:7 are 5 places in the OT where sons of God are mentioned and please check all this out on the Hebrew manuscripts, plenty of sources you can purchase for easy translation to English, such as a Strong's exhaustive concordance, a companion Bible, etc.
Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in OUR image
Genesis 1:27 God created man in his own image
The tree of the knowledge of good and evil was Satan, not literal fruits or nonsense people teach little children in Sunday schools. The angels look like we do and they are coming back as it was before.
It's a shame people have been so deceived that they almost make a religious war over women wearing something on their heads or women preaching. Christianity is a reality, not a religion. I care and love you enough to tell you about all this even if you were to be against me in anyways or think im crazy because thats how good our enemy is, people just don't care enough to go check it our for themselves. You go research sons of God in the Hebrew and get back to me.
Joel 1:1 talks about the 4 stages of the locust, that locust army in Revelation. The locust army come during the 1st half of that 5 month period and actual locust have a 5 month life cycle which is from Passover to fall fellowship (thats no accident friend), Noah's flood was a 5 month period.
The great book of Daniel 9:27 when the abomination, the abdominal one, the desolator it should be- abaddon in Hebrew, apollyon in the Greek, both *names of Satan (God gave us so we couldn't go wrong and apply it to the old and new testament) in *Revelation (meaning the unveiling/ meaning that book literally means from God its all wide out in the open), that when you see that then you know it's been shortened to a 5 month period.
I mean Jesus Himself in Mark 13 said He foretold us all things and Amen you can look that up, means that's that.

@@PelvicGaming Blessed be to all, in Revelation 13:1, the beast with 7 heads and 10 horns coming up out of the waters, multi-headed means political, singular is religious (being the anti-christ which is Satan).
7 dominions throughout the earth, 10 kings/world leaders, the waters are the people expecting to be raptured out of here in famous fly away doctrine, for it will be as in the days of Noah that Yeshua mentions in Matthew 24 (with there being many other references throughout the old and new testament concerning the end times, as Daniel is a overlap of Revelation, and Ezekiel speaks more on the end times then any other book in the Bible other then that great book Revelation, the unveiling/uncovering as for the entomology of the word itself), those who are taken abide under God's wrath.
The false/spurious messiah comes 1st in Rev. 12 on this earth for a 5 month period, Satan and the fallen angels will be cast to earth (for the angels are coming back to seduce the daughters of men as they did in Genesis 6), he is the son of perdition (perdition means to be put to death, for he has already been judged).
The harlot, the woman spoken of is that great city Babylon, babel=confusion (Satan is the author of confusion), God said "to come out of her" in Rev. 18:4 I believe, as well as He did Abraham. It's not until the son of perdition, after the 2nd woe, on the 7th trumpet is when Jesus returns, the Lord's Day (that 1000yr period in 2nd Peter 3:8, the day John was taken to in the spirit, even past where were at now), when Jesus returns the dead will rise in Christ mentioned in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 (where most people cling to the Rapture Theory), and we will all (meaning everyone to have ever lived who has went before us and who remain), will be in the spirit.
Yeshua Messiah will reign here in the new Heaven in the new earth, then at the end of that 1000yr period Satan will be let loosed a little while because God is fair and everyone will have a chance (not meaning a do what you want now and make up for it then, pertaining to those who have been unable to hear the good news of our Lord and Savior and will be tested by Satan as even Jesus was to set the example on how we combat our enemy today), many will go through the millennium and go straight to hell, and they will be tested by him and some will still even then choose to follow/worship Satan, then comes the Great White Throne Judgement prior to the eternity.
God is that consuming fire, you don't burn and are tortured in hell forever and ever, your name is blotted out which is the eternal punishment because blotted out is forever, no longer existing, period, all souls return to whenst they came, for Jesus Himself would say depart from Me i never knew ye, not keeping you alive in a fiery pit with demons and the devil, all will be erased because none of it will be with us.
The mark of beast in the forehead are those without the seal of God in their foreheads (your brain, meaning the truth in your mind), the mark on their hands are those doing the work for the beast, not a tattoo of 666 or a computer chip implanted, many will be deceived and have no idea who they're working for or which kingdom they are advancing.
The 1st beast received a deadly wound on 1 of it's heads, a disagreement or falling out (as we even experience today), via the supernatural entity being Satan when he is cast out of Heaven entirely will come to solve the problem (world peace), no nations to wage war against 1 another we/they will all be as 1, a 1 world rule, under Satan (in the beast system).
The religious beast who was out of the earth (dust/physically you could say, not flesh for he is a cherubim as serveral are mentioned throughtout scripture), and cast to the earth, the anti-christ isn't a man, it's Satan (looks like a lamb (Jesus), spake like a dragon). He exercises all the powers of the 1st beast (to take advantage, coming to make peace, not war, because it will all come down to his worship, as we worship our almighty Father to whom he originally wanted to be evaluated above YHVH during his overthrow), and when the dragon healed the wound of the 1st beast, and all worshipped it (trampling like cattle, moths to a flame).
Many churches will become the harlot and whore after her, and oh how so difficult it will be to speak/preach against peace/ the wound was by the sword and it is truth, for they/ the world will hate you/us for standing on God's Word till the end.
Satan uses men just as God does and counterfeits all God does, some of the churches will do the work for him as they are openingly displaying now the Satanic infestation that is spreading like a contagion of death, they'll think your preaching against Jesus, our Messiah to come, for Babylon today is being revived to its fullest making the way and carving the path in blood for the false to come, so many will be deceived that you personally hold so near and dear to your heart, tell them now and let God's Word flow as you sound the alarm.
God i pray you open they're eyes, for Yeshua came to save, not to condemn the world and when He comes back, He will will return as our mighty king who the pharisees and scribes originally expected to see. He is our redeemer and this time, He is coming to rule with a rod of iron and wage war on His enemies.
Where will you be? Where do you stand? Who do you truly serve? It's His long-suffering and unimaginable love for us all that keeps this world together and 1 day His hand will be removed over the face of the earth, throughout the four corners as far as the eye can, time is running out and everyday im reminded as to who it is i need and why I need Jesus the Christ. I know if I can love you and fight for you, then so can God, for He loves so, so much more then you could ever image.
      God bless you and Amen.

It's worth noting that the content changes between the two releases are due to changes in Japan's rating system. Dragon Quest is always targeting the A/Everyone rating, so they had to tone things down in the rerelease to meet the revised standards. (Personally I think the warriors look better with shorts, but the slight plot changes are a bummer since they lose the impact they had. )

Since the original release in 2004 I always make sure I get to replay it to completion once every 2 years. It's my most replayed RPG of all time and it never gets boring for me tho I only stick to playing the 3DS version since the PS2 version can be a bit of a slog for completion so for the original. I just go to the main ending.
Also I love the localisation of this game where it set a new english script with european writing rather than american which is a breath of fresh air and most of the voice actors who've done english dubbing for the DQ series. they've only done their DQ games or a few cartoon voice roles, I know some of the actors from british comedy/mature drama movies so it felt great identifying english actors who'm i've known in other roles.
To me: No other RPG still has topped it? some that came close were skyrim, Paper mario TTYD, shining force 2 is a personal big fave of mine, skies of arcadia is really cool to, even chrono trigger is up there... hahahah but it will never top DQ8
In 2020 bunch of my buds were having a really hard time, they got tired of playing more serious games. So I recommended them to play Dragon Quest 11 S edition or Dragon quest 8.
Most of them went for DQ11 and they're in love with that game so much and so greatful I recommended it to em. Sadly only two of my friends got DQ8. My mates aren't into 3DS games but those who've play it really love DQ8 so much. They now see why I love DQ8 so much during a time they really really needed something charming to get their minds of bad things going on and all that.
I remember my friends would see me play the original PS2 game so much, more than GTA san andreas at the time. They were more into edgy games. Now they regret ignoring this game and the series.

Hey, we have the same favorite song! That and the overworld music were the only ones that I really liked, but I'm not the biggest fan of orchestral music in games, even though I grew up listening to equal parts rock and classical. 🤷‍♀️ I didn't like this entry in the series as much as the ones that came before it, but I cut my teeth on the first one; the grind WAS the story. 4-7 had neat gimmicks to tell their kinda lackluster stories, but 8's not having that just laid it bare for me. And I know that's not a popular opinion; I just like different things about this series from what most people do, so I'm not as big a fan of the newer entries. I can't wait to play Memories of Celceta, myself; I've only played the SNES version of the original, and it's pretty rough. Definitely looking forward to your review!

What is wrong with orchestral music? It is not even all that common in video games.

Yeah DQ has always been a bit lacking in party interaction unfortunately, one of my only gripes with the series. XI is the best in this regard though for sure so you have that to look forward to at least lol

A nice tip to help with late/post game: Timbrel of Tension! You can only make 2 of them and one of the ingredients is one of the best Helms in the game (a hefty price indeed and one can only be found post game)....yet, having two of them is COMPLETELY broken. It can be used to increase the entire party's tension level by one. I used Jessica (whips), Yangus (axes) to attack, and Hero + Angelo to Timbrel. I had a Meteorite Bracers on Hero and Angelo to make sure they always went before Jess/Yangus in case Jess/Yangus failed a tension build. An example fight: Rd1 Jess/Yangus - Build Tension, Hero/Angelo Timbrel, Rd2 Jessica - Twin Dragon Lash, Yangus (I forget the move I used), Hero/Angelo -Timbrel or heal/buff....by the time Jessica and Yangus attack they are at 100 Tension and DESTROY enemies (Jessica has the highest damage output of every character this way and it's not even close).

It was Helm Splitter! I had Yangus use Helm Splitter and made sure he went before Jessica with speed boosters (whatever the weaker Meteorite Bracer was called, maybe the Argon Ring). Helm Slitter at 100 tension is absurd.

Grinding becomes a cinch when you discover the best places to spawn king metal slimes! So its not like you will spend so much grinding for the endgame stuff! Because by that point there is simply nonuse fighting normal monsters for level up. Only fight metal slimes exclusively. Which on 3ds is pretty easy to exploit the spawning of them with the camera trick.

I’ve only ever played DQIX but since I played it around launch about ten years ago, DQ is very nostalgic to me- and because things like the enemies and visual style are the same in each, they’re all very comfortingly familiar to me
IX does have some unfortunate things (loads of content locked behind an unfeasibly large postgame, and because you make a party out of generics they don’t have personalities) but it really is a great game and I might revisit it someday

I like the idea of being able to see the monsters in the field, but for the most part the PS 2 version seems better. I love the cell shaded graphics and orchestrated soundtrack, the idea that some things were censored for the Nintendo release bothers me too.

I just beat this finally about a month ago(PS2 version) and honestly I’m so happy I finally beat it(took me forever to beat it due to life, lol) I loved it so much although I wished the character chatter would have been more but other than that, enjoyed every second. You’re right about the new ending though, the original true ending made more sense, lol.

I know the 3DS version has a ton of extra things and quality of life improvements over the original, but I still prefer the PS2 version. They censored the 3DS version and the PS2 is the only version with the orchestrated music, which is probably in my top OST's of all time.

What's with people wanting to see Jessica in skimpier outfits? How can that seriously be a gripe people have, or am I missing something else that was censored?? The only legitimate complain is the lack of orchestrated soundtrack which is a complete downgrade from the original.

Ooooh Ys 4 remake, looking forward to it! The Ys games of the past 10 years went for a team mechanic, though the early games had Adol going solo and slaying demons like a boss. Overall good and fun series. Keep up the good work :3

Lovely video, Pelvic Gaming is one of like five channels in my subs where I basically press play as soon as it goes up!
DQ8 on the PS2 was my first Dragon Quest, and my first real JRPG outside of Pokémon- I only bought it because the cover looked like Dragon Ball Z, and the monsters on the back looked like Pokémon 😅 still really love the game but it’s definitely very grindy.
Excited to see you try DQ9 and DQ11! Dragon Quest nine is great fun but not the best for story and characters, while Dragon Quest 11 is up there as one of my fav JRPGs of all time, especially the Switch version
    Keep up the good work!

I liked this game a lot. I played Dragon Quest 7 on 3ds before it. That game is worth playing, but the beginning sucks hard. If you can get past that, it is pretty cool. Very long, but I was never bored and pretty engaged past the beginning. Those super bosses were pretty tough. I recall the super-version of Marcelo was absolutely vicious even at level 99.

I tend to love experimenting on using characters unique weapon skills. This is one of the rare moments the characters rarely share weapons. Like Hero is the sole Lancer in the original 8. (Never got the 3ds) I even enjoyed fisticuffs role Yangus can do. My main man Yangus is a pure Brawler. Dude can put so many enemies down. My only dislike... (i seen gameplay) is the sage's stone debuff. Giving it to Yangus would turn him into the tanker healer. Now, it's like Dragon quest 9 weak as a medical herb. But gives everyone a slim chance to live compared to ps2's pure free multi heal...can give you a fighting chance. For me, OG ps2 is better.
