Worse part about 9's graphics are the mix of 2d sprites and 3d models. Especially awkward when a character goes from 3d to 2d after you finish their plot.

This is one area where the DS's low resolution is a mixed blessing as it can hide the distinction between the 2D and 3D characters. On emulator though, the 3D characters stick out drastically from the 2D ones. On the flip side, I thought the game's graphics looked really good, but only because I was rendering at a higher resolution on emulator. Even ignoring the fact that I kind of want to preserve my silly 12 year old save, it's just so hard going back to the native resolution.

Its not necessairy about growing with it up, because there are many fans who started playing it as an already grown person, even after the Wifi service was shutted down for DS and the active period of game was over. Its more about ppl who played it as their first DQ game from the series, who could keep playing the game without knowing the style of the previous DQ games.

@@christianlopez707 I figure if the remake will improve the definition and add party chat (which it should), it might turn out pretty good. The other thing that should be fixed is the exp gained from battles because I think it's too low, and considering how many times you'll have to start from lvl1 when changing vocation, it really isn't great. Last but not least, the evac spell is bounded to some vocations, so if you don't wanna use those vocations you'll have to get plenty of evac-u-bells. They're cheap so no big deal, but at this point why not making it a spell for all vocations, at least for the hero?

  • @pockystyx4087

having loved 3, 9 is pretty much in the same vein. Its a lot more about getting a group together, or building your own little party to travel the world with, rather than the usual DQ ( or RPG fare) story.
It leans more towards the Wizardry influence, or Etrian Odyssey for those with better taste.

The criticism about going back down to level 1 on a vocation change is valid. It's based off how it worked in Dragon Quest 3 which was the first in the series to have a system like that. In 6 and 7 where vocations returned, you stayed the same level if you swapped, with stat changes. I think with the party member creating at Patty's Place (another callback to 3) they wanted to go back to the system of 3.

Oh well, no game is for everyone, but honestly, Dragon Quest 9 isn't only my favourite in the series, it's one of my favourite RPGs ever! (If not THE favourite) I've always liked customising my characters in games, and having a completely custom party was a major highlight of the game for me! But not only do you get to choose how the characters look, but the equipment you purchase in stores actually appears on the character models! What other DQ games even do that? (Well, 10, but that wasn't released in the west) What other J-RPGs do that?! Not a lot of them I'm afraid...
But also, I don't mind silent protagonists in the slightest, in fact, a huge part of the reason why I loved DQ9 so much was because each and every town had its own little story, all with very interesting and compelling characters! This game's world felt more alive to me than most other J-RPGs, it didn't feel like the world revolved around my party, it felt like everyone had their own thing going on, and I was getting to know and love them! And in the end, when they all came to help me after I'd helped them, that was a really powerful moment!
Also, I really loved Stella, everything she said was gold lol
Oh and, you can do alchemy anywhere, it's not just at this one specific spot, there's an option in the menu for it... And speaking of alchemy, I got A LOT more out of alchemy in this game than I did out of 8, the alchemy pot talks in both DQ8 and 9, but only in 9 does it actually have a personality, but also, a lot of the things you can craft in DQ9 are equipment, and you can make things that not only have good stats, but that look cute! And speaking of looks, yeah, I get some people don't like the look of DS games, but I think the look of this game is pretty charming! One of the best-looking 3D games on the DS for sure, and I think the lil' character models are adorable~ No wonder why I liked dressing them up so much lol
Oh well, this is all just my opinion of course, just thought I'd go over my completely different perspective on this game, and like, I didn't play this game on its prime either, I played it in 2014 (or was it 2015?) on my 3DS, all by myself, and I had an absolutely wonderful time! It was my favourite thing I'd played that year, and yup, I did A LOT of the post-game ;3

Hope a Remake of DQIX can improve things and add more crafting and design and interactive stuff like Casino, Fishing, Monster Taming, Knick Knack collecting, Monster Coin Collecting, going to other realms from different time periods like DQXI3DS/DQXIS did, and more.

Making your party fashionable is just an extra difficulty option. It was my favorite part of the game.
Well, that and a lot of Sunday school nostalgia. It was nice to just be a helpful angel, sometimes, without worrying about the hate that was often just below the surface of my family's faith.

But your criticism is totally valid and I agree with a lot of it; I can't imagine having as much fun if I had only played this alone. Plus, a lot of the cooler features such as exclusive items available on a weekly basis are no longer available due to server support being dropped, which stinks as you can get a lot of cool looking items to go with your party. I think this game would really benefit from an updated re-release, and maybe toning down some of the quests (especially the ones in which you can unlock NPCs as party members).

I'm a huge Dragon Quest fan, and DQIX was my introduction to the series! While I loved this game at its prime, i think the issues brought up here are very accurate. This game is a slog in Single Player. I loved DQIX because it was fun to play on the couch with buddies! Finding new recipes, forging new gear, conquering tough bosses, making creative battle strats... It's really all about the friends you play with since the in-game cast is so dull. It's easy to see how this game was the half-step into MMO territory before they went all in for DQX.
I will say though that I'm a bit disappointed in the DQ superfans consulted for the video. DQIX is a fun game, but far far from the best in the series if played in Single Player. DQIV has a much better cast, and DQVI and VII have another fun twist on the vocation system (though it's really grindy). And obviously, DQXI is the untouchable monolith of DQ perfection. I would love to see more DQ content on the channel. There's a lot more to love!
Great video, tons of fun to watch :)

Dragon Quest VI lacks character development and directions. The story was overshadowed because the game was rushed and I understand that though I am down figuring it out because it's just another table top then the whole story puzzled in mystery.
Dragon Quest VII had a bit of a problem with the shard finding because one NPC(old fortune lady who hints where shards are) was in a obscure place in "Falrod" land in the PSX/PS1. However it can be punishing if you choose the wrong character with the right vocations/class and the boss can stop the player in there tracks because a character left the party (I believe happens three times though I only know two).

Thanks for this. A JRPG that was more focused on multiplayer is not really what I want to get into. A lot of the side quests that you mentioned would have turned me off as well due to their difficulty. If I did play this I could see myself trying to do what I could in the main quest to advance the story as fast as I could. But with my big backlog I really don’t see much of a need to suffer through this one unless I’m really desperate for some JRPG content for some reason.

Playing this game solo definitely brings down the entertainment value. I still liked my solo playthrough because I love DQ. The class system is fun no matter what. But the solo experience is not at all comparable to the multiplayer experience I had with this game. It's clear that Yuji Hori intended DQ9 to be enjoyed the most when playing with others. Playing a DQ game with friends in this manner is something that most JRPGs do not offer. I can only imagine what it was like living in Japan during the first few months of release when you could find players to team up with on every subway and street corner. If this ever gets a remake with online multiplayer I believe a lot of people will reevaluate it.

This is a good reflection of playing the game solo in 2021. The graphics are dated, and it's hard to go back to a DS after playing games on switch.
It still offers a unique experience that I have not found in other JRPGs, in that it used to be your own personal MMO in a way. It definitely helped to have siblings or cousins.
The ideal is a remake that let's people experience the multiplayer but online, and with improved graphics. Even now emulating and using parsec can not achieve a stable multiplayer experience.
The alchemy system rewards you on multiple playthroughs for remembering the recipes. You could get access to some crazy items way before intended this way.
Restarting at level 1 was it's own form of dopamine rush, since you felt like you were levelling crazy fast. Especially when paired with metal slime hunting. It's something I miss when I play other DQ games, since metal slimes maybe produce 1-2 levels in those. In DQ9 you can shoot up 14 levels, and get loads of skill points quickly.
That said, really good video. A great example of why this game needs a remake.

I have never been wild about this game's appearance and much like you stated, this game is really a significant step down in visual quality from VIII. DQ IX really needs a remaster/remake of sorts moreso than probably any in the series, but thats just my take. This DQ is one of the least of the games in the series I have ever had interest in playing but some of that is from not realizing when it came out and not seeing it until way after it was out. I will likely not make any significant time for this title unless its redone in some fashion in the future but because its a DQ game it still makes me want to play it, at least some. This was a really fun review (I loved the guest spots), thank you Lady Pelvic!

Probably due to the fact I was raised hella Catholic back in my day and love imprinting OG backstories on all the characters I made who grew with my own alongside me as we fought evil and dealt with the workings of this world in our own ways; most of it was imaginary sure but hey, games are what you make of them when you're a young kid amirite? Valid criticisms all around. I adored this game but that's also because I had multiple friends to play it with regularly back in 2009, 2010. Where this game truly shined in my memory was the grottos with friends, exchanging treasure maps, exploring them together to hunt down rare items for weapon upgrades. Maybe it was because I was younger, but that to me made this game a ton of fun, but also I'm someone who enjoys games that I can interact with people more than I do JRPGs where it's its own high quality single player experience, so that may be personal preference.

I'm torn on if I like IV or V more ATM. IV was my first DQ game and I very much enjoyed the structure that the DS version offered, though 5 was also a *really* good entry and loved the story even if your core party was pretty sporadic from Act 2 to Act 3 which did bother me a bit.
Based off my own experiences I'm leaning towards V for now, if only cause the lack of party chat in DS IV kinda hampers the party after actually joining. I liked IV having a stable core party, but V DS having party chat to get more depth to the otherwise now silent party members barely gives it an edge.
That 1st place fav may change though since still have a few more to play. III will likely be next on my list, with the HD-2D remaster in the works.

I think you're supposed to approach the player/party creation aspect through the lense of a DnD campaign, rather than a typical RPG video game. You make your characters from scratch, and you make up their story, personality, and individual quirks, and experience the world through their eyes. For my second playthrough of the game, I did exactly that. My player character was a girl who struggled with the loss of her Celestrian traits, and her story arc involved self-discovery, gaining the strength to move on from tragedy and loss, and making herself more than she once was. Oh, and she was more comfortable wearing light, slightly revealing clothing, even in cold weather. See, if you play the game that way and make up your character's story as you go along, it's a lot more enjoyable. But, that's coming from an aspiring writer with a creative mind, so your mileage may vary. 😅

Yeah, pretty much agree with all ur points. I did have some fun with it in the beginning, but by the end a lot of the gameplay felt pretty repetitive/tedious. Def agree with u on the side quests being annoying, so many of them had you grinding/item hunting for hours on end for a reward that was often kinda mediocre/not worth the effort. I think the thing that got me most was the music; it felt like I was listening to the same 10 tracks over and over. There were some boss fights and towns/characters I did have fun with/enjoy, but overall the game wasn’t really for me. I liked hearing your thoughts on the game!

Definitely a big fan of this game growing up, but I agree with the review too. As a kid, I liked having all the game content like customizing characters with all sorts of equipment, exploring the big world, and the endless post game grottoes. I didn't care much about story elements, and all the characters were kind of developed in my imagination.
But going back to the game now, it hasn't aged that well. It's probably the clunkiest feeling dragon quest (the menus have a noticeable delay and battles are relatively time consuming), the ds graphics don't hold up, and I think this game's music marks when Sugiyama's quality of work started to decline.
With that being said, I hope they take the uniquely good parts, (especially the large postgame/procedurally generated dungeons, and all the equipment changing appearance) and put them to work in a new dragon quest game.

I've been around since the very first Dragon Warrior came Stateside, and I was a HUGE fan back in the day. The legendary hero, the quest to save the kingdom from the evil Dragon Lord, the Elizabethan English; I was completely enraptured... along with like 3 other people in the US; it was slow and plodding, and when the first Final Fantasy came over here, nobody even looked in its direction. Right around the time 8 came out, it started gaining popularity (the fact the everyone bought it for the new Final Fantasy demo helped it a lot more than it did Brave Fencer Musashi), and I was just baffled. It's an old series that has done almost nothing to change with the times - that reversion to Level 1 every time you change classes is a relic from Dragon Warrior THREE, though there your stats are only halved; I don't know how it works in 9 - and I know why I like it, just not really why everyone else does. It's evolved more than just a little since the first game, where the grinding IS the story, but not a whole lot. Glad to see the series still being appreciated, even if it hasn't been my thing from about 8 onward, though.
Oh, and THANK YOU; I thought I was the only one who felt that this series had largely forgettable music. The title music is spectacular, and beyond that, you'll get a few good tunes here and there, and the rest is just... fine. Usually some recycling, too; you'll even find Koichi Sugiyama's music in other Enix-published titles, like EVO on the SNES.

This remains the only DQ I’ve played; it was the fifth to come out in Europe, I think, and the first to receive much promotion. I really love it even though I don’t really disagree with the criticisms (except the music, I love this game’s soundtrack). DQ is very nostalgic even though this remains my only one; it’s just always comfortingly familiar.
At the time the only JRPGs I would have played would be Pokemon, since I was about ten. So the silent protagonist self-insert and the lack of party members was completely fine to me.
It is probably the DQ game that would benefit the most from a remake insofar as it’d let people experience it with all the multiplayer. I remember trying to do a lot of postgame stuff but without its Canvass mode (basically Streetpass before 3DS!) I couldn’t access much very easily.
I remember my party was me, Armin the priest (game-generated name) and Meanie the warrior and Meanella his sister (don’t recall her class, she used a fan weapon IIRC).

If you love the party chat I would highly recommend playing DQ4, as it has the funniest and most charming banter imo, especially Alena and her companions who have a great group dynamic. You need to play the mobile version though, as the original DS version of the remake had the party chat cut in the western release because they didn't want to spend that much money on localization at the time. The mobile version is good though, they actually put effort into making a high quality port.
