I fell in LOVE with Dragon Quest after playing 11 to completion. I hope that there are more DQ games on the PS5 and that they have trophy support. I really want to play the originals!!!
It would be nice if they ported the DS versions of 4-6, and 3DS versions of 7-8 to modern consoles eventually, and I'm sure they'll port Dragon Quest 11 to more consoles. Unfortunately they ported the phones versions of 1-3 on Switch, and they'll probably show up on other consoles too.
I like DQ6. Yes it does feel like the characters and overarching story are half-assed after defeating True Murdaw but that was ok with me. It's a huge game full of fantastic vignettes and the feeling of adventure feels the greatest in this game. It truly feels like a game where paying attention and keeping note of things NPCs say is important because their pieces of information will be important to exploring the world. While DQ4 and 5 were more story and character driven, I appreciate DQ6's departure from that.
The trick 6 pulls on you with the Hero's identity, the small hints you get about where the dragon that takes you to Murdaw's keep came from, everyone's favorite edgey boy Terry... there's a lot to like when it comes to DQ6. Also you get a frickin' Hackasaurus party member. That's awesome.
VI revolutionized the series. Combat got so much better and became more multidimensional and even vocations were added. I'll never understand people who say this game wasnt great.
DQ VI (6) is my favorite. My first game in DQ series. When I first finished the game, I was a poor Brazilian kid playing in Japanese without understand, reading walkthroughs in the internet to complete. Great graphics, nice cast, amazing soundtrack, superb class system and a huge map, fun to explore.
The mobile version of Dragon Quest 4 adds the party chat feature that was in the Japanese version of the ds remake but was cut out in the localization. So I recommend the mobile version instead of the DS remake.
There's a patch on RHDN which (re-)activates exactly that feature, and thus a great (i'd even say the best) option too. I'm so glad about that cause i can't stand mobile controls. Me personally i love the NES version the best cause of the soundtrack in which it is one of the best sounding NES games period. It evokes emotions. The epilogue theme is the absolute 2a03 peak!
Can’t wait for III remake this Thursday! Such a simple/traditional JRPG but something about this series is just so magical and charming. My first dragon quest was VIII for PS2 and I’ll never forget how it captivated me and how challenging it was for me at the time. It was so rewarding to finally complete. Thanks for sharing!
Mfs sleep on VII because it's so long, but it really is good. The storytelling is excellent, the visuals and soundtrack are just lovely, the chapter structure feels concise and digestible, the world was engaging as it changed around the player, and the characters are all at least fun and most are memorable, with a special shoutout to my homegirl Maribel. I personally couldn't care less about how long it is, it's more Dragon Quest, I'll take that, and it's really good Dragon Quest at that. Perfect game to end the PS1 library on, like damn if I died and my last words were "Dragon Quest VII" I'd be pretty goddamn happy with that.
Awesome video! I just got into DQ with XI on Switch and now I'm building my collection with every game in the series. Currently playing through V on PC translation for the first time and I'm hooked! Can't wait to see what's in store for the future of DQ!
As someone whos played and beatin them all since dragon warrior 1(except 10) this is a pretty decent list. 5 or 11 would be my #1. Why hasn't square enix released the remakes on steam? They don't like money?
6:49 "I do feel it was the most Disney out of all the games" Never mind the fact that one of the songs in DQ8 is a dead ringer for It's a Small World >.>
Hi Ryan, just ran across your channel and you are a great reviewer and a positive dude! Subscribed! I just picked up Dragon Quest XI on my Xbox One and so glad to play it, I'm only a few hours in but the quality of the game and the love that was put in the game is through the roof! Thanks for the great video!
DQ Is that good even some of the best in the series ends up in the middle tier of the top. ALL BECAUSE EVERY DQ GAME IS GREAT AND YOU CAN'T CHOOSE WHERE TO PLACE EACH GAME
@@battlegeekplus I'll be looking into your videos on 10. I am so sad that we can't get those in English, I adore MMORPGs, and DQ would be perfect for me.
I'm just now starting to get into Dragon quest, I've played through all of 11 S and loved it, I've seen some stuff on 8 and watched the your story movie about 5 too, can't wait to try out more
In my opinion Drsgon Quest 9 should've ranked better. No other DQ game shows EVERY piece of armor on a character as well as every weapon. Definitely think it needs a remake. Great video!!!
Even though i love all the DQ games i played, my top favorites are VIII and XI S for their stories, characters, and their voice actings. Though my honorable mentions are III and V. They're the best of both Erdrick and Zenithian trilogies. My team for III was Nikolai the priest, Samantha the mage-turned sage, and Mozarella the martial artist and supposed ancestor of Morrie from VIII. The big choice you make in V was a lot to think about for me. You even get another option in the remakes. I'm waiting for X to be localized and for IX to get a remake because i want the full experience with the online functions that are now expired on DS. They could use nintendo network for a switch version. By the way, the mobile version of IV is the best. The biggest flaw with the DS version is the missing party chat only found on mobile. Kiryl is one of my favorite allies in IV because of it. Even though i always name the hero after myself, i never address his name as such when i read the game text, much like for when Trode or Yangus speaks to the Hero of the Cursed King.
Oof, always hurts to see 6 so low. Some of the best party members in the franchise imo and started the vocation system I love so much. Felt like it had much better storytelling than 7 and 9 even if dungeon design wasn’t that great.
I don't have a good sense of judgement for DQ6 because I have yet to play it myself. But judging based on introduction, premise, first impression and what people usually say on worst to best lists. The only party member who seemed really memorable was Terry; aka the Luke Skywalker of Dragon Quest and the main character of Dragon Quest Monsters.
Having played DQII for the first time recently on the Switch collection, I've got to say I don't get the Prince of Cannock hate. He was the most well-rounded and dependable character in my party and only died once or twice and that was in the outside area before the final castle when I was just grinding for some levels. Idk maybe they tweaked him in later releases, but yeah if anyone is the worst character in that game its the Princess because of her very low HP. Great list regardless.
Thanks! I still am not too big of a Prince of Cannock fan, but he does help at the start especially with healing (if he isn't killed off quickly first)
He’s a bit more balanced in the more remakes, in the NES version he’s not very well balanced and that’s what the Prince of Cannock meme mainly refers to.
With the exception of 11 which I only played the beginning of somewhat recently, it’s been so so SO many years since I’ve played any Dragon Quest games. Not since I was in middle school. Man, I do miss this franchise.
Battle Geek Plus - Press Start To AWESOME! Well I picked it up on your recommendation! Hahaha. I just took it as far as I could with the demo since you assured me the demo save carries over. Just haven’t had the time to dedicate to a full play yet, or the money to buy it.
Nice list! This is mine 1) VIII: Best RPG ever created 2) V: Best story I have ever experienced in a game 3) X: Best MMORPG ever made 4) XI: Best RPG of the past decade 5) IX: Best new RPG of the DS era, my first DQ game as well 6) IV: Legendary game that introduced many story tropes and concepts to gaming 7) VII: One of the best concepts of time travel ever conjured up 8) III: The most legendary RPG of all time, what more needs to be said? 9) VI: This game gets a lot of slack, but it has a fantastic story 10) I: Old, not its fault, best of its time 11) II: Experimented with new concepts for its time, but has some very annoying parts to it
@@battlegeekplus I like your take on Dragon Quest V the most. Instead of it being the typical levelling up grind, the real (emotional) grind is the story and the hell the Hero's put through
DQ7 is my absolute favorite, perhaps matched only by 11. Especially the 3DS version, my first dragon quest. The music, the storylines, everything was perfect to me
Great video. My first Dragon Quest game was Dragon Quest XI. I loved it! Wondering which one I should play next. Based on this list I think it will be Dragon Quest 3!
found it now and have to say my t1 is dq9, not only was my first dq, but also i was like 12 yo i could play with friends, vintage bosses were completely new for me... you already mentioned that and well u were pretty accurate :)
Excellent video amigo, i can relate the tons of hours playing this magical videogame saga. I can't show enough love to DQ, you already know, we share this passion. You surprised me with DQI not being that below in the list XD. And same, i want DQX localized as everyone. Thanks for this as always 😄
I don't think I've seen a more odd ranking of the DQ series on RUclips or websites. I totally respect your choices even if I don't agree with them. Awesome video!
yeah. his rankings kinda weird. he is talking about how the class system are amazing in DQ3 but didnt even bother to mention DQ 6 or 7 class system and just proceeds to tell how long DQ 7 is, you know we are playing jprg of course it will be long. i guess each to his own
Hey man, we are the same age. I just cant get into the new rpg's, played all the Final Fantasy games and am looking for a new game to explore with a classic feeling to it. Never tried DQ and was looking for somebody who could introduce the series. This list really helped so thanks a lot. Will start with Dragon Quest 11 as you suggested.
I can really understand this list, but as a younger fan who grew up on dq9, i found it hard finishing dq3 bc of the lack of quality of life improvements and having certain stuff spoiled i guess as a result of not living through the era. Dq5 was just as good as 9 for me (so it must be better bc if the lack of nostalgia) but dq11 just cant be beat
My list would be... not included: VI, X (didn't play em) 8: IX. I guess what bothers me with Dragon Quest games with class systems is that they feel solvable--and not just for endgame. I hate how much better certain weapons are than others except in extremely niche situations. My favorite parts of DQ battles are ailments and managing damage against huge groups, and both of these elements were heavily de-emphasized in favor of damage set-ups against single targets (probably to better facilitate climactic multiplayer moments). It's hard for me to make my own fun unless the game forces me to, yk? Also, the set-up of the story when you're an angel is WAY cooler, and I wish I could have been a separate entity from my party and guided them around. 7: III. I'm feeling contrarian, but I don't know... to me, it feels stuck between the modern and classic style. Going from 0 to Sage with my party sapped the fun out of the class system. The scenario has many highlights, but I didn't feel battles were challenging enough to justify how much questing you do, and the scenario (despite the twists) drags for me in the last third. 8. VII, for similar reasons. I don't like how you get a billion redundant skills in the 3DS version. I wish it was more like FFV where I had to choose the perfect combination of what I have instead of making a bunch of God-tier prestige class characters. I try to play these games without guides as much as possible, and I felt punished for experimenting; when I stumbled upon Druid and Champion, I was like, "oh, nothing I did with the class system mattered until this point." I appreciate how experimental the story becomes; despite not having many overarching plot twists, it surprised me more than any other DQ, and that counts for something! 6: IV. I liked the individual chapters a lot more than when the story all came together. Instead of all the characters' stories intertwining or culminating in strong thematic links, they all just become faceless combat-bots and the story shifts to the plight of the world. Also has some really annoying difficulty spikes. 5: I. I just love going through this every now and then! It's just satisfying. Every time I play, I remember/forget juuust the right combination of details that I'm learning without totally trivializing the game. 4: XI. I played with all Draconian Quests on to start. I eventually took off the NPC-related shypox detriment, and after defeating the Kraken, I tried with armor & without poxes on everyone, and the extra degree of control offered a more empowering kind of fun (making me wonder if they should have just implemented a hard mode based on the EXP limit & harder monsters). Even with all these restrictions, after the opening hours, the game didn't become difficult until massive bossfight spikes. Like, even without armor, level caps, and only a 3/4 chance to act on all characters, random battles were kinda limp and easily avoided. Even so, the combat options go very, VERY wide; the game being perfectly complete-able with all the Draconian quests is a testament to its sterling battle system. I just wish the encounter design/resource management matched up. But overall, it's a rousing adventure with incredible town concepts. 3: VIII. It's just so solid! I'm replaying it right now. The 3DS version adds so much new stuff. It's the kinda world I'm happy to just hang out in. The combat feels both limited and really deep with the skill system & fixed parties; the balance of early game/late game efficacy, efficacy versus single or multiple targets, buffs and debuffs and heals attached to your physical attacks... Even the meat-heads get some depth! And even in a game where physical damage dominates, the variety & size of group encounters encourages magic, and choosing when to buff/debuff and with what spells becomes very important as bosses change their behavior with damage. It has one of the best, simplest crafting systems in a game. Yangus is my husband. 2: II. I'm sad this one's the dark horse. It was the one DQ game I NEVER had to look up a guide to complete because the NPC dialogue is so thorough (in the Switch/mobile remake, anyway) and the combat is straightforward yet challenging. It's tough, but ailments are very powerful; it's a beautiful interactive slot machine. Managing the economy of damage prevention, healing, gold... The time you learn skills and the distribution of equipment in the game is so finely tuned (though, yk, high friction). And the scenario! Looping routes back and forth between all the towns in order to un-knot the scenario satisfies me SO deeply. And for a retro RPG, the emotional pay-off is INTENSE. I can imagine why it's so maligned, though, considering even the adjusted encounter rate is brutal & the dungeons are hard to keep track of (widescreen probably helps a lot--no idea how you'd get through the GB version!!). 1: V. Deborah!
@@battlegeekplus I think the class system would shine if Dragon Quest XI's battle mechanics acted as the base; tanking mechanics, scaling magic damage of various elements, and ailment-focused physical attacks... there are so many new niches for party members! My ideal would be something like... each class, instead of having linear skill learning or multiple 100-point skill paths, would have small, DQXI-style hex grids, maybe with the ability to start developing from a redundant skill node from other classes (like dual-jobbing in FFXII). You could use the class system to further spread out the specialties behind weapons; if thieves, rangers, and mages all have boomerang trees, they each respectively & separately learn their utility, scaling physical damage, and flat magic damage skills. Do you focus on a specific weapon as a jack-of-all trades, a multi-weapon user within a specific party role? Do you focus on stat gains & passives or go for the strongest skills first? Etc.
DQ9 was my first DQ game and it’s what got me into the series as a whole. So the fact that their are games better than it makes me very excited to beat all of them.
I’d say 11 is the best starting point, because I had played 8 and builders, wanted to try 9 and the earlier entries but never did, but after finishing 11 I bought every DQ game I could find
This comment is a year old, but I would recommend playing IX. Disclaimer there may be some bias with it being my first. Story isnt as deep as others Ill admit, but its still solid. The character customization and grottoes allows the option to continue playing the game after completion. Hard to cover everything in words, but its a nice experience.
Dragon Quest 11 is my first dragon quest. I'm playing through it on my Xbox series S. And I like it so much that I bought dragon quest 3 on my switch and I play it a bit before going to sleep and during my breaks while at work.
@@battlegeekplus Epic! Maybe one they they will localize the first and third ones to English. Its a hassle to get Japanese copies and either find Japanese consoles or hack your console to remove region locks. But it's worth it to play them. Wonderfully fun games. I'm glad I speak some Japanese so I at least had some understanding of the story in the first and third ones. Though the second one is the best so I'm glad that is the one that has an English version.
I have all the Rocket Slime games and have already finished and recorded them. Luckily the first one is easy to play without knowing much Japanese and the 3rd one had a fan translation come out a year ago.
You did my boy DQ7 dirty, but I can't complain about the rest of the 6 or so I've played. I' enjoyed the little things in 7 like how the dialogue changes if you run away from the first boss you fight, and then there's the slow buildup around the mysterious ruins in the PS1 version that males your first trip to a new town so monumental. Gameplay-wise it seems to take notes from DQ3, and I wouldn't have it any other way. In fact, I'd say unlocking the job class system in DQ9 is one of the hardest and most rewarding experiences you can have in a DQ game. They really make you earn it!
So far I’ve played DQ 1,2,3 and 11. And honestly DQ3 is a genuine pain to go through for me. Truly horrific grinding, I pray I never in my life have to grind the way I grinded in that game. Grinding is so unbelievably boring for me. I cannot stress enough how much I hated the lack of personality the party members have and the grinding for beating Xenlon just once has scarred me for life
@@battlegeekplus yeah. Im playing on Switch so from what im seeing I only need to beat Xenlon once to get a wish that’s actually worth it. Aside from the grind for Baramos and Xenlon, I think the game’s grinding never really bothered me that much. Its just that Xenlon has really frustrated me
@@jaretco6423 my comment is 10 months old, I’m already at DQ6 and have enjoyed every single entry. What I didn’t like was SPECIFICALLY DQ3’s sudden difficulty spike. DQ2 had that problem but it wasn’t nearly as bad as DQ3’s. But regardless I still enjoyed DQ3 and am looking forward to the remake, but I have never experienced grinding as horrific as DQ3’s
My list: 10. II its rough and honestly feels like a slog to get through after all these years. 9. I its the OG, but I think its pretty much a novelty now. 8. VI I just could not get into this game's story or characters, and I really didn't like the class system as much as I was hoping to. 7. VII I have a soft spot for it, but its just too darn long of a game. When I hear people complain about games being long, I laugh and just remind them of VII. 6. V I know this game has a lot of fans, but I just wasn't that invested in DQ waifu edition. Plus I really disliked the monster party thing being gutted in the remake. 5. VIII This is also a really popular one, since its a lot of people's first game in the series, but I just kinda found the story kinda lacking. 4. XI A fine game, and one of the best of examples that JRPGs can work in the modern era. No need to gut your gameplay or world to make it work *cough FF7 cough*. 3. IV this one is a toss up for me, I love the cast and fun story of this game, but its almost tied for number 2 to me. Also you can be a girl in this game, which helped. lol 2. III I love this game so darn much. Yes its dated, yes some of the stuff is cryptic, but its classic DQ to me. Also the first time you could be a girl in the series. 1. IX Easily my favorite game in the franchise. Its III on steroids; fully customizable parties, great class system, multiplayer, and a story that actually got me to tear up. I have not played X, unfortunately. I really hope that SE or Nintendo try to bring the game over a la PSO2 someday; but I know the chances are very low on that front.
Dragon Quest 8 will be ever BY FAR the Supurior one for me. DQ11 was noice, Good story, but so small areas compared to the Openworld of DQ8 and for an DQ MAIN Title on PS4 in 2017, and After the second reusing from enemies, Areas (I mean, they reused all the known areas as OPTIONAL POST GAME DUNGEONS, WTF) at the Post Game Dungeons, I quitted. I like the DQ8 Story a LOOOT MORE, because LEVEL 5 really have a talent for real touching Stories. It was like an Anime Adventure like ghibbli. And yes, Ni no kuni 1, I must continue this great Game (also from LEVEL 5)! Have a Great Day/Knight, I'm waiting still for the next DQ Main Game (DQ3R or DQ12, and hopefully Not so much reused stuff), the DQ10 West Version, and of course, very underrated, Dragon Quest Heroes 3 (They didn't toke so much time for the second)!
Before reading the comments I thought I would be alone in my dislike for 2. I always hated the prince, lol. What a little tosser. Haven't played 7 so can't speak to it. I loved 1, 3 and 8, and I'm thinking of getting 11. I keep telling myself to wait for the price to come down (on switch) and I keep crying as it holds value better than first party titles.
@@redlion145 2 is charming in some ways, but it deserves a bottom spot. If you love 1,3,8 then more than likely you won't enjoy 7 much. I'm a huge DQ fan but 7 is such a slog fest. So much backtracking throughout the entire game. In my opinion, 3, 8, 5, and 11 are the best games in the series so yeah please play DQ11. You won't regret it if you loved 8. The Switch version has been on sale a couple times I think for 40 bucks, so I'd imagine eventually it'll hit $30 at least some day. Nintendo and Square Enix put in a lot of time and effort on the Switch version so I think they're making sure they get every last penny out of XI S sales.
@@NightFlyStudio Maybe it got down to $40 on the eShop, but I don't think physical has ever been that cheap. I prefer to own physical games that I can resell. Part of my problem is that Amazon can't keep a consistent supply of XI S DE physical copies. At least, whenever I check Amazon the seller I've bookmarked is out of stock and I have to find a new seller who inevitably has an equal or higher price, never lower. Maybe I'll try Best Buy or someone else. I don't begrudge them their profit, particularly if it's as good a game as everyone say it is. I just personally don't pay $60 for games except in extraordinary circumstances. There are too many games I'd miss out on if my avg price per game were that high. I mean Paper Mario Origami King just came out last year, and physical copies are already cheaper than DQ XI S DE, technically a downgraded graphical version of a 4 year old game.
Amazing video and I fully agree, Dragon Quest III is an amazing game and my favorite DQ of all time as well. Love the respect to it here and recognition, fantastic video and great list. Keep up the great work.
8 and 11 are my favs 8 was my first then I went back play 1 thru 7 and played 9 then I fell out got rid of all my dq games for a while and only recently picked up 11 and what a way to come back
DQ9 is my absolute favorite, it was my first DQ game, the story for me, at the time was something I've never played before and the customization fact was awesome. Anyway, now that I have played the other games, I still think the story is the best with dq11 coming in a close second, however, I will agree it's not for everyone, but that is my personal preference. Yes, I'm biased however other than putting dq9 up higher, I agree with the rest of it.
Story starts strong with fallen angel dynamic but quickly deescalates into fetch quest and ass pulling (Corvus is found by lady ghost, why didn't she show up way earlier?)
2 years late, but I have to agree with (most) of this list. Though I haven't played VI or VII on my own yet, DQ5 is probably one of my favorite games of all time. The poor hero, all that he goes through... I don't think any other hero in the franchise has suffered as much as him, haha. At least not the mainline games. Good list! I was a little sad to see DQ9 so low, as it's one of my favorite games as well. For the story, which is a little blasphemous to say since it doesn't have real party members that interact with the story. We all have our preferences, though! It's always interesting to hear what other people think about the DQ franchise :D
@@battlegeekplus yeah and what's really cool is the fact that sub 40 can be completed by a relatively new runner if you can get through like the first 33-50% of the game without a mistake, and if you're really experienced like nescardinality you can push to sub 30 easily. It's awesome. I just wish someone could figure out the rng manipulations for dq5 to make hunting for specific monsters to recruit easier. Because I have spent upwards of 5 hours trying to recruit metal slimes and havent gotten one just because the encounter rate is low and they tend to flee.
I finally finished 11 and holy molly .. what a game. I was exhausted at the end .. I cannot describe how long this game is. but at the same time the story. the classic sounds, the breath taking locations and bosses.. dragon quest 11 became one of my favorite games of all times . I have only played 11.1 and 2 , but I am happy this game makes me want to play my phone installed DQ4 . Hats off. I honestly like the stories in dragon quest better than final fantasy . Japan always does it right.
First Top DQ Games List that does justice to DQ10, everyone who's interested in the game should try the Free Trial, especially with the translation tools and people from the USA have the IP ban lifted. Hope they re-consider a localization for Offline, or Online, or, both, man i love this game 😍 Also VI on the 10th place!? That's sad but understandable lol
Dragon Quest 4 is the best ever made and you won’t change my mind. It’s so ahead of it’s time, the soundtrack is magic, and the characters and story are flawless for a NES game. The remake improves upon it, but I prefer leaving out the extra last chapter, as it seems unnecessary. Leave Psaro dead, he is the villain for crying out loud. 8 is my 2nd favorite and a amazing game with a superb soundtrack.
I never really thought the Prince of Cannock was that useless in fact I managed to beat DQ 2 3 times. No I'm not kidding I litterly did beat it 3 times.
I've been it probably 4 times as a kid on the NES, once on the SNES fan translation, and once on the switch. I definitely plan to finally play the Gameboy version of DW2 in the future.
I've beaten it three times, too. Once on the NES, once on mobile, and once on the Switch. I also tried the GBC version, but quit very early into it cuz those ports of the original trilogy felt like garbage to me.
Your #1 is one of my favorite games of all time. I love when other fans of the series have it as their favorite. Don't really know why since the rest of the series is so good.
You know, is surprising to see DQ7 at the number 9 list because I found it really good but I played the 3ds version and it took me 130 hours to beat the game with a good level, also tho I've been playing the games in numerical order so the last one I beat was the 7th XD I'm taking a little break with FF games but I'm excited to continue the last games to 11.
I liked your review and agree with you dragon warrior 3 was my favorite on the Gameboy color. But, my all time favorite is dragon warrior monsters and dragon warrior monsters joker 2. The breeding system was amazing and was rewarding for getting the best monsters in the game.
DQ11 was my first dragon quest game I’ve ever played im real late to the party, but man when I played this game, I loved every minute of this game, the story, the gameplay, It felt like I was playing and an anime movie by Akira Toyama, And I was so glad that the switch version was the one that I ended up getting. I recently beaten dragon quest five and shit that was an awesome game too, I’m definitely now a fan
I fell in LOVE with Dragon Quest after playing 11 to completion.
I hope that there are more DQ games on the PS5 and that they have trophy support.
I really want to play the originals!!!
I'm pretty sure we'll have more DQ games coming on the PS5 later in the year!
Same
Nintendo made a deal with dragon quest so most games will come to Nintendo
Hail adventurer, I come to thee from the future. The 12th adventure has been prophesized by the almighty god's and it's still to be set into motion.
I'm glad you didn't have spoilers in here. Also, I agree with you on DQ1, it holds up a lot more than I thought it would!
Definitely a casual romp every now and then
Don't forget it has an awesome final boss
DQVI is the best 2D DQ.
DQ VI is one of the best, i love the sense of journey of this game
DQ VI (6) is my favorite. My first game in DQ series. When I first finished the game, I was a poor Brazilian kid playing in Japanese without understand, reading walkthroughs in the internet to complete.
Great graphics, nice cast, amazing soundtrack, superb class system and a huge map, fun to explore.
What really makes the game awesome is the music. Holy hell. I like the difficulty spike too.
I've played 6 through to 9, and 9 is by far my favourite. Doing a solo run is oddly fun and soooooo satisfying to complete. Also we stan Stella.
Dragon Quest III in number 1? A man of culture, I see.
👌
The mobile version of Dragon Quest 4 adds the party chat feature that was in the Japanese version of the ds remake but was cut out in the localization. So I recommend the mobile version instead of the DS remake.
I forgot to mention that, but thanks!
Got my copy preordered as well!
Oh man, DQ VI would be a top 5 for me. The graphics were really impressive on the Super Famicom.
I cant wait for DQ3 remake in the octopath traveler style! Great list man.
Thank you, I’m excited for that too!
It's out now
Mfs sleep on VII because it's so long, but it really is good.
I hate Maribel was so happy once she was gone. My boy ruf was my best body till the end
Awesome video! I just got into DQ with XI on Switch and now I'm building my collection with every game in the series. Currently playing through V on PC translation for the first time and I'm hooked! Can't wait to see what's in store for the future of DQ!
Thank you! Hope you enjoy V alot since I ranked it pretty high!
As someone whos played and beatin them all since dragon warrior 1(except 10) this is a pretty decent list. 5 or 11 would be my #1. Why hasn't square enix released the remakes on steam? They don't like money?
I know right? The DQ series on steam would be an instant money maker for them.
6:49 "I do feel it was the most Disney out of all the games"
Never mind the fact that one of the songs in DQ8 is a dead ringer for It's a Small World >.>
lol yes!
Which song ?
I love this guys energy and his shirt!
Thank you!
@@battlegeekplus watched it live with my chat on twitch we had a blast love your passion will be playing DQ8 soon because of this vid so thank you!!!
Thank you sir! I hope you enjoy DQXI on your Xbox One!
DQ5 is one of my favourite and most replayed JRPGs.
DQ Is that good even some of the best in the series ends up in the middle tier of the top. ALL BECAUSE EVERY DQ GAME IS GREAT AND YOU CAN'T CHOOSE WHERE TO PLACE EACH GAME
This was a tough list to make!
Great list. I was shocked 8 was so low, but I think the top choices are most people's favorites (barring X, since most of us haven't played it).
Thank you! I absolutely love 8, but sadly there are games I just had to rate a little higher.
@@battlegeekplus I'll be looking into your videos on 10. I am so sad that we can't get those in English, I adore MMORPGs, and DQ would be perfect for me.
You’re absolutely the reason why we should have DQX here!
I'm just now starting to get into Dragon quest, I've played through all of 11 S and loved it, I've seen some stuff on 8 and watched the your story movie about 5 too, can't wait to try out more
Solid ranking. Respect.
Thank you, sir! Huge fan of your work and your performance as Pankraz in Your Story!
Battle Geek Plus - my Favories in order is DQ IV, DQ IX, DQ V, DQ VI, DQ VIII, DQ VII, then DQ III, DQ II and DQ I.
Good list!
In my opinion Drsgon Quest 9 should've ranked better. No other DQ game shows EVERY piece of armor on a character as well as every weapon. Definitely think it needs a remake. Great video!!!
Thank you! I will be replaying DQ9 soon since I’ve always wanted to revisit it after a decade.
The party chat is missing only in the English version of IV, so we do have the party system on the ds version, just not in English.
ryan your my favourite youtuber and i love your dragon quest x series keep up the good work
Aww, thanks so much. That means a lot to me. :)
@@battlegeekplus oh and i forgot to add you were the main reson i play dragon quest so thank you so much
You're welcome. Also, thank YOU for supporting the series!
Oof, always hurts to see 6 so low. Some of the best party members in the franchise imo and started the vocation system I love so much. Felt like it had much better storytelling than 7 and 9 even if dungeon design wasn’t that great.
I didn't mind 6. It just took me forever to figure out where I was meant to go in the first half of the game haha
DQ9 storytelling is way better.
I really, really love this game. Theres always a place in my heart for it
Having played DQII for the first time recently on the Switch collection, I've got to say I don't get the Prince of Cannock hate.
Thanks! I still am not too big of a Prince of Cannock fan, but he does help at the start especially with healing (if he isn't killed off quickly first)
Yeah, he was a pretty good character for me (I also played on switch)
I'm of the same mind, he was always very useful throughout all of the game, specially against Atlas, Pazuzu, Belial and Sidoh
Definitely play more of 11!
Battle Geek Plus - Press Start To AWESOME! Well I picked it up on your recommendation! Hahaha. I just took it as far as I could with the demo since you assured me the demo save carries over. Just haven’t had the time to dedicate to a full play yet, or the money to buy it.
My top three are 1. Dragon Quest VIII, 2. Dragon Quest V, and 3. Dragon Quest III.
Nice list! This is mine
1) VIII: Best RPG ever created
2) V: Best story I have ever experienced in a game
3) X: Best MMORPG ever made
4) XI: Best RPG of the past decade
5) IX: Best new RPG of the DS era, my first DQ game as well
6) IV: Legendary game that introduced many story tropes and concepts to gaming
7) VII: One of the best concepts of time travel ever conjured up
8) III: The most legendary RPG of all time, what more needs to be said?
9) VI: This game gets a lot of slack, but it has a fantastic story
10) I: Old, not its fault, best of its time
11) II: Experimented with new concepts for its time, but has some very annoying parts to it
Great list! Totally agreed with #3!
@@battlegeekplus I like your take on Dragon Quest V the most. Instead of it being the typical levelling up grind, the real (emotional) grind is the story and the hell the Hero's put through
Wrong
Dragon Quest V: There’s nothing stronger than family.
DQ7 is my absolute favorite, perhaps matched only by 11.
Especially the 3DS version, my first dragon quest.
The music, the storylines, everything was perfect to me
The 3DS version of 7 is a good place to start!
Good video Ryan (aka Joel's Big Bro xD)! This is an interesting top!! And I look forward to seeing more of this!!
My top will be
DQ 8
DQ 5
DQ 11
My own ranking couldn't be more different, but Ryan is very likable, so that's a "subscribe" from me, dawg.
Thank you! I hope you enjoy the rest of my work!
Best Dragon Quest games
ALL OF THEM. cool video sir
Yes! Thank you!
Great video. My first Dragon Quest game was Dragon Quest XI. I loved it! Wondering which one I should play next. Based on this list I think it will be Dragon Quest 3!
Thanks man! You're making a good decision! :)
found it now and have to say my t1 is dq9, not only was my first dq, but also i was like 12 yo i could play with friends, vintage bosses were completely new for me... you already mentioned that and well u were pretty accurate :)
Nice! I was your age when I first started playing DQ3.
My top 5
1. DQ 3
2. DQ 5
3. DQ 11
4. DQ 8
5. DQ 6
Great list!
Excellent video amigo, i can relate the tons of hours playing this magical videogame saga. I can't show enough love to DQ, you already know, we share this passion. You surprised me with DQI not being that below in the list XD. And same, i want DQX localized as everyone. Thanks for this as always 😄
The only dragon quest game I’ve played is dragon quest 11
I really want to play
Dragon Quest 3
Dragon quest 8
And Dragon quest 5
All of those are extremely good games!
My first Dragon Warrior game was 7 on the Playstation. I remember one of my friends teasing me about the main character being a fisherman lol.
Great video, I love your enthusiasm
Thank you!
I don't think I've seen a more odd ranking of the DQ series on RUclips or websites. I totally respect your choices even if I don't agree with them. Awesome video!
Thank you for respecting my opinions!
yeah. his rankings kinda weird.
he is talking about how the class system are amazing in DQ3 but didnt even bother to mention DQ 6 or 7 class system and just proceeds to tell how long DQ 7 is, you know we are playing jprg of course it will be long.
i guess each to his own
@@rennstkevidloloy2257to be fair dq7 is longer than most jrpgs if the era by a decent amount

Thank you.
Loved the quality of the video. Please, keep posting more Dragon Quest content!
Thank you for watching! There is more DQ content on the way!
Only played 5 to the end loved it. 30 hours in on 11 loving it. Kinda funny looking at this list looking forward to 12
I can really understand this list, but as a younger fan who grew up on dq9, i found it hard finishing dq3 bc of the lack of quality of life improvements and having certain stuff spoiled i guess as a result of not living through the era. Dq5 was just as good as 9 for me (so it must be better bc if the lack of nostalgia) but dq11 just cant be beat
Yeah, I know a lot of younger fans grew up with 9.
Go back and finish DQ III on the switch, it's amazing, you won't regret it
@@Muddy120 i think im gonna finish 4 first, but i will give it another shot!
Question? Do I have to play 1 and 2 first. Cause I want to try 3 first but heard that the plot twist is related to the first 2 games.
I recommend playing 1 and 2 first before 3.
You don't have too but yes I highly recommend playing 1 and 2 first before 3 for the biggest impact.
My list would be...
not included: VI, X (didn't play em)
8: IX.
1: V. Deborah!
Great list! I'm hoping DQXII brings back and revamps the class system since it seems so inconsistent from game to game.
Great video! A solid DQ list for sure! Subbed!
Thank you! Check out the rest of my DQ content as well!
I’d say 11 is the best starting point, because I had played 8 and builders, wanted to try 9 and the earlier entries but never did, but after finishing 11 I bought every DQ game I could find
Nice, I'm glad 11 got you to get more of the games!
Yes, as someone who's been a Dragon Quest fan since 2005, and played the 1st 4 and 9, I agree that XI appears to be my favorite by far
Interesting list. I'll make my own when I finally beat all the games!
Very solid list and mini-reviews.
I haven’t played IV, VI, IX, or X, but my list would be II, I, VII, VIII, III, V, XI
@@xooks3050 Appreciate that! Yeah I still have not played IX - I’m really hopping a remake comes to Switch or consoles or even mobile in near future.
@@grapes9h5 I understand if you choose not to, but the emulation works great. Got 3 (and a half) recompletions.
Dragon quest 9 was my first game i love it i place it 1st or 2nd
Imagine a remake version of every dragon quest game with dq11 graphics
That would be amazing.
With voice acting would be perfect
A full on remake of 3 with a revamped personality would be cool
Dragon Quest 11 is my first dragon quest. I'm playing through it on my Xbox series S. And I like it so much that I bought dragon quest 3 on my switch and I play it a bit before going to sleep and during my breaks while at work.
Gotta say though, the Rocket Slime games are even more fun than the actual Dragon Quest games. XD
Absolutely! I’ll be reviewing those games soon.
@@battlegeekplus Oh I didn't know that. I'll have to play that fan translation. Now I'm excited haha.
Awesome video as always 😆
Thank you as always!
Everyone knows DQ rocket slime is the best DQ game
So far I’ve played DQ 1,2,3 and 11. And honestly DQ3 is a genuine pain to go through for me. Truly horrific grinding, I pray I never in my life have to grind the way I grinded in that game. Grinding is so unbelievably boring for me. I cannot stress enough how much I hated the lack of personality the party members have and the grinding for beating Xenlon just once has scarred me for life
Yeah, DQ3 may be my favorite, but the remakes aren't as streamlined as the DQ1 and 2 remakes when it comes to grinding. Just gotta duke it out.
Great listing and review! You’ve got yourself another subscriber!
Thank you sir!
you must be psyched for this week then! I am!!!
My list:
Also you can be a girl in this game, which helped. lol
Great list and reasons behind it!
I have a prediction the next mainline game will be DQXII, but we'll know for sure on the 35th anniversary this May!
Yup, 6, 7, and 2 belong in the bottom 3. That's all that matters, lol.
Thanks for watching and for being a DQIII fan!
8 and 11 are my favs 8 was my first then I went back play 1 thru 7 and played 9 then I fell out got rid of all my dq games for a while and only recently picked up 11 and what a way to come back
8 was my first to play fantastic game. Only played a little bit of the demo of 11 so I don’t know how good it gets
If you love 8, you'll *love* 11!
Thank you very much! This was exactly what I was looking for!
For me it's:
8 > 6 > 5 > 7 > 4 > 3 > 11 > 2 > 1
I haven't played 9 or 10 yet.
I played the gbc version of dq3 . It’s highly recommended if you don’t have access to the snes and has some nice retro aesthetic
I'll get to that version one of these days.
I'm watching this in the distant future, and DQX is still not localized :(
2 years late, but I have to agree with (most) of this list.
With proper rng manipulation the first release of Dragon Quest can be beaten in under 40 minutes.
I have seen the speedruns. It's amazing that can be done.
I'm also almost level 40 in a section where I should probably be level 29 or so
I finally finished 11 and holy molly .. what a game.
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed 11 and you’ll definitely enjoy 4.
The issue with the ds version of dq 4 is they got rid of party chat. But the mobile version has party chat back
whats the box behind him on the right, the Dai box, it was before the anime started i believe
The original 90's Dai anime Blu Ray that only had 42 episodes.
@@battlegeekplus nice!!
I know people don't think very highly of Dragon Quest VI but it's honestly my personal favorite.
No worries, every DQ is someone's favorite!
Dragon Quest VIII still blows me away ha and your comparison to DQ11 is spot on
DQ8 is still great!
Pretty good video !
Thank you!
I'm star ocean and ys fan but will give this try. This helped
Glad it helped!
The first Dragon Quest game I've ever played was Dragon Quest Monster Joker and it was so fun!
DQ3 is my favorite playing throught the 2d-hd remake now and loving it
First Top DQ Games List that does justice to DQ10, everyone who's interested in the game should try the Free Trial, especially with the translation tools and people from the USA have the IP ban lifted. Hope they re-consider a localization for Offline, or Online, or, both, man i love this game 😍
Also VI on the 10th place!? That's sad but understandable lol
You know, generally speaking, I think I agree with this list entirely.
Woo!
great video dude big thumbs up
Thanks!
@@battlegeekplus welcome mate i subbed aswell love the slime shirt where did you get that?
Dragon Quest 4 is the best ever made and you won’t change my mind. It’s so ahead of it’s time, the soundtrack is magic, and the characters and story are flawless for a NES game. The remake improves upon it, but I prefer leaving out the extra last chapter, as it seems unnecessary. Leave Psaro dead, he is the villain for crying out loud. 8 is my 2nd favorite and a amazing game with a superb soundtrack.
4 is a great game!
Thanks for making this video. The west needs to keeps spreading Dragon Quest love.
Thanks for watching! We definitely need to spread the love of DQ out here in the west!
I recently started playing DQ4 after wanting to get into the franchise for a long time. I'm really enjoying it so far!
Awesome! Great place to start!
My favorite is DQV.
Good choice!
DQ11 is a fantastic game for sure!
@@battlegeekplus hell ya it is
