Great video man its always awesome to see more people talking about Dragon Quest. If you really love 5 I highly recommend checking out the Japanese ps2 version. You can get a translation patch for it and have the option to emulate it or go the actual hardware route with a bit of a work around. But you get in my opinion, better visuals and a fully orchestrated soundtrack that really elevates that games music to being close to as good as 8’s
The first Dragon Warrior game (I'm an American it was Dragon Warrior then) opened the door to other JRPGs and tabletop RPGs. Literally life changing. Love the DQ series.
Dragon quest 8 is my all time favorite. I think it was the first one I actually beat all the way through. I remember being blown away when the story just like this i your final boss and then was like nahhh. it opened up a wider world and story.
DQ9 is my all time favorite game. I especially love the multiplayer feature. I beat the game 4-5 times playing solo, 4-5 times playing with a friend or with my sister, and at least 2 times playing in a group of three people. I like how your other group members are just random npcs because that gives you the chance to fully concentrate on the story and build your companions how you want them to be. I’ve never played a game in my life that I enjoyed as much as DQ9 but maybe that is just because of the nostalgia and the fun I had with my friends. Hope they do a remake similar to the DQ8 version for the 3DS!
Dragon warrior 7..as it was...is probably my favorite. I think it's the most mysterious out of them all. Plus the job system was awesome. Ridiculously long game. I'd say #1 Dq 7 #2 Dq 5 #3 Dq 8 #4 Dq 6 #5 Dq 4 11 is good but there are a few issues I have with it. I really didn't care for the characters minus sylvando. I'm not a fan of on screen enemies mostly because it also makes the game easier since you don't need to deal with item management nearly as much...I forgive chrono trigger though.
been a dragon quest fan for a long time starting with 9, which is my personal favorite, as a kid and playing tons of the other ones as i grew up. cant wait to re-experience 3 again one i buy the remake. 4 and 11 are definetely some of my favorites too
See I would argue that Dragon Quest does evolve, and in many ways pushes the system it's on to the limit. I was the first truly expansive, epic adventure on the NES, (Legend of Zelda was a more contained adventure IMO, at least the game world felt much smaller) II, III, IV expanded the world, storytelling, and gameplay. I didn't get to play any of the SNES games because American and I never owned a PS1, but I loved DQVIII which massively improved the characters and storytelling and honestly to this day is still my favorite 3D world map. I don't know why but it's way easier to navigate than any other 3D RPG I've played (which admittedly is not a lot, I'm not a lifelong gamer, I tend to play in concentrated bursts). Just finished XI's demo on the Switch and I agree it's less impressive than VIII outside of the graphics. TL,DR: VIII is my #1 right now!
If you prefer your RPGs to be more story reliant, I’d start with VIII or XI. If you don’t mind less emphasis on story- III, IV and V are great. Like I said in the video, V has an awesome story, but it’s still very much an old school game.
Despite DQ 11 having the best battle system in the franchise with a solid story with characters the game sure gets dunked on by fans…even tho you could argue it’s the best DQ game in the franchise…
I love VII. I even love the PS1 version. I love its long. I get lost in it. The story is great. The effort they put into it is insane. I forgot but it was like 70,000 lines of dialogue.. lol. Still get sad about Kiefer.
I love Dragon Quest and I haven't played them all yet but I'll say my favorites are #1. Dragon Quest 11 #2. Dragon Quest 5 (PS2) #3. Dragon Quest 3 #4. Dragon Quest 9 (or 8 cant decide) #5. Dragon Quest 1 Idk if it's a hot take but I did not like Dragon Quest 4, although I think it has the best character designs. Also they should bring Dragon Quest 10 to the west already 🚬🗿
The weirdest thing about DQVIII is they originally gave the USA the orchestral soundtrack and Japan that non-orchestral, and for the 3DS version they did the opposite. Just stick with the orchestral!
@@dmen0563with you there. People hype the 3DS version for having Morrie and Red but i love how the game is tailored to have 4 characters and how well that works
11 might also be the most story driven but a lot more dialogue doesnt make it a better one. Dq to me relies on the world and interactions with it and the mystery behind it. To me that's what makes a dq game unique.
As a long time Final Fantasy fan who's in the middle of a gauntlet of all the single player games (currently on FFX), I was thinking of doing a blind gauntlet of the DQ numbered titles. What I'm not sure of though is whether to hold out for the 2D-HD version of 1+2, since it only has "2025" listed for release. Seems like it could be a long wait, but I REALLY love the Octopath-esque style. With a history of ports and newer versions of the older DQ games, I'm curious which ones are considered "definitive" versions. Going back to FF, I've only really played the pixel remaster versions of the first 5 games, having played the PR and SNES version of 6 as well.
Dragon Quest 1-3 aren’t really about the story in my opinion. Even in 3, the most fleshed out one, your characters are just blank slates. 3 has a fantastic world though. And in case this helps you make a decision; there’s a reason why Square Enix put out DQ3 first- it’s chronologically before 1&2. All 3 games have nods to each other.
@WITAWITAVG gotcha. While story is one of the big things I enjoy in games, I just want to expand my JRPG experiences. What I've mainly got under my belt at the moment is FF, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Pokémon, Octopath, and Persona 5. If the appeal to earlier DQ doesn't lie in the plot, then I think it's all the more reason for me to check them out in a comprehensive way. The first couple FF games were FAR from exciting by today's standards, but I took them for what I imagine they were like at their release time
@ Yeah I really enjoy FF1 and DQ1 kinda like simple fairy tales. But they’re a one and done thing for me. I don’t really replay them. I feel like DQ 5, 7, 8 and 11 have the best stories.
Controversial by who? It's not at the bottom for me or at the top. The characters were beyond bland minus sylando I feel. The world didn't feel as mysterious as past entries either. It truly is overhyped. I'd say the majority still put 8 at the top but newcomers love 11 cause it's streamlined to hell

Bro you got excellent taste in dragon quest games. Nice wild arms reference too might I add.
XI was the first one I played and now I'm hooked on the franchise.
Same! Playing them chronologically now.
Dragon quest 7 was my first and still my favorite.
I'll admit it first. I wasn't a DQ fan growing up, but I tried DQ 8 because the main character looked like Goku with a sword 😃
Only in the ps2 ver his high tension at 100 he looks like a Super saiyan 2. was removed on the 3ds ver.
