      That's the great thing about 11 is its as good any game to start with as an introduction you're then going to be familiar with any title and what to expect!
      Compared to say FF15 or 16 if you start there and went back your playing a vastly different game with different mechanics.

    Really great video, im new to the series and I agree that DQ doesn't really have bells and whistles, doesn't have that deep emotional pull that you see from FF4 onwards or that political intrigue from Suikoden but what it doe's have is whimsical worlds and brilliant comedy and with that great Toriyama art that makes it a perfect light hearted adventure with familiarity and consistency, you know what you are in for everytime! I've currently only played 8,4,5 and working on 7 (3ds) at the moment, it's pretty damn easy to fall in love with DQ and I now see why the Japanese love these games so much.

      Dragon Quest is unashamed children fiction, bedtime story, and like the best ones, it emotionally elevates life in the most unexpected manners. Also, Dragon Quest mirrors Yuji Hori soul, the game completely belongs to him and is highly autoral, which is why they have such cohesion. I think the true magic of dq is having a insane passionately creator, the franchise has overflowing love on its purest form

    If you really love 5 I highly recommend checking out the Japanese ps2 version. You can get a translation patch for it and have the option to emulate it or go the actual hardware route with a bit of a work around. DQ9 is my all time favorite game. I especially love the multiplayer feature. I beat the game 4-5 times playing solo, 4-5 times playing with a friend or with my sister, and at least 2 times playing in a group of three people.
    I like how your other group members are just random npcs because that gives you the chance to fully concentrate on the story and build your companions how you want them to be.
    I’ve never played a game in my life that I enjoyed as much as DQ9 but maybe that is just because of the nostalgia and the fun I had with my friends.
    Hope they do a remake similar to the DQ8 version for the 3DS!

    11, 7, 5, 3
    My favorite ones, honestly tho, cant shake my head around the fact that people over the years have started to diminish 11. Most of your time dedicated to 11 was talking about things you didn't enjoy in the game or tangents that are not even about the game (the release of persona 5?) even tho it's literally in a video about the 5 best games in the franchise, every single other iteration there's only positve things to talk about but 11 it's just about the flaws, lol
    Now i think you are crazy when you say 8 has better design than 11 but i can respect that, your taste. Just can't really understand what is the point of putting a game that you have nothing good to say about in a video about your top 5

    As a long time Final Fantasy fan who's in the middle of a gauntlet of all the single player games (currently on FFX), I was thinking of doing a blind gauntlet of the DQ numbered titles. What I'm not sure of though is whether to hold out for the 2D-HD version of 1+2, since it only has "2025" listed for release. Seems like it could be a long wait, but I REALLY love the Octopath-esque style. With a history of ports and newer versions of the older DQ games, I'm curious which ones are considered "definitive" versions. Going back to FF, I've only really played the pixel remaster versions of the first 5 games, having played the PR and SNES version of 6 as well.

      Dragon Quest 1-3 aren’t really about the story in my opinion. Even in 3, the most fleshed out one, your characters are just blank slates. 3 has a fantastic world though. And in case this helps you make a decision; there’s a reason why Square Enix put out DQ3 first- it’s chronologically before 1&2. All 3 games have nods to each other.

    • @tylerseidel809
      @tylerseidel809 Месяц назад +1

      @WITAWITAVG gotcha. While story is one of the big things I enjoy in games, I just want to expand my JRPG experiences. What I've mainly got under my belt at the moment is FF, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Pokémon, Octopath, and Persona 5. If the appeal to earlier DQ doesn't lie in the plot, then I think it's all the more reason for me to check them out in a comprehensive way. The first couple FF games were FAR from exciting by today's standards, but I took them for what I imagine they were like at their release time

      @@WITAWITAVG Yeah. It's a personal preference. When I was younger, my 1st DQ was 5 on SFC
      Problem was, I didn't understand Japanese so I got stuck somewhat earlier on.
      DQ5 DS admittedly, made it more accessible for me years later. Also because they allowed 4 people instead of the SFC 3.

    See I would argue that Dragon Quest does evolve, and in many ways pushes the system it's on to the limit. I was the first truly expansive, epic adventure on the NES, (Legend of Zelda was a more contained adventure IMO, at least the game world felt much smaller) II, III, IV expanded the world, storytelling, and gameplay. I didn't get to play any of the SNES games because American and I never owned a PS1, but I loved DQVIII which massively improved the characters and storytelling and honestly to this day is still my favorite 3D world map. I don't know why but it's way easier to navigate than any other 3D RPG I've played (which admittedly is not a lot, I'm not a lifelong gamer, I tend to play in concentrated bursts). Just finished XI's demo on the Switch and I agree it's less impressive than VIII outside of the graphics.
