That's the great thing about 11 is its as good any game to start with as an introduction you're then going to be familiar with any title and what to expect! Compared to say FF15 or 16 if you start there and went back your playing a vastly different game with different mechanics.
Really great video, im new to the series and I agree that DQ doesn't really have bells and whistles, doesn't have that deep emotional pull that you see from FF4 onwards or that political intrigue from Suikoden but what it doe's have is whimsical worlds and brilliant comedy and with that great Toriyama art that makes it a perfect light hearted adventure with familiarity and consistency, you know what you are in for everytime! I've currently only played 8,4,5 and working on 7 (3ds) at the moment, it's pretty damn easy to fall in love with DQ and I now see why the Japanese love these games so much.
Do yourself a favor and be sure to get to DQ11 eventually. Also it's really cool to see people who know about suikoden. I feel like its finally getting the praise it deserves thanks to the attention Eiyuden brought back to it along with the remasters. You looking forward to these remasters of 1&2?
Dragon Quest is unashamed children fiction, bedtime story, and like the best ones, it emotionally elevates life in the most unexpected manners. Also, Dragon Quest mirrors Yuji Hori soul, the game completely belongs to him and is highly autoral, which is why they have such cohesion. I think the true magic of dq is having a insane passionately creator, the franchise has overflowing love on its purest form
@@liquidmetalslime9 I'm definitely looking forward to remasters. It will be interesting to see how they tweak some thing's here and there, for as good as those games are, there's definitely a few things that need it, I did actually play the DQ11 demo but I diddnt include it as was just a sample, I'm most definitely going to play it in full when I return from my travelling.
@@kacomk24 Yes, that passion comes across very effectively, It's been such a joy to experience. The legacy of DQ is massive. We wouldn't have rpgs as we know it without it. From my experience, it's the kind of game franchise where it feels like there's no bad time to start playing because they are timeless.
The first Dragon Warrior game (I'm an American it was Dragon Warrior then) opened the door to other JRPGs and tabletop RPGs. Literally life changing. Love the DQ series.
I played this chronologically because i’m Japanese. DQ 8 is my favorite because graphically, it was ten times better than the previews entries. It was memorable if you played it at the time it was released and compared them to the ones before it.
If you prefer your RPGs to be more story reliant, I’d start with VIII or XI. If you don’t mind less emphasis on story- III, IV and V are great. Like I said in the video, V has an awesome story, but it’s still very much an old school game.
Great video man its always awesome to see more people talking about Dragon Quest. If you really love 5 I highly recommend checking out the Japanese ps2 version. You can get a translation patch for it and have the option to emulate it or go the actual hardware route with a bit of a work around. But you get in my opinion, better visuals and a fully orchestrated soundtrack that really elevates that games music to being close to as good as 8’s
DQ9 is my all time favorite game. I especially love the multiplayer feature. I beat the game 4-5 times playing solo, 4-5 times playing with a friend or with my sister, and at least 2 times playing in a group of three people. I like how your other group members are just random npcs because that gives you the chance to fully concentrate on the story and build your companions how you want them to be. I’ve never played a game in my life that I enjoyed as much as DQ9 but maybe that is just because of the nostalgia and the fun I had with my friends. Hope they do a remake similar to the DQ8 version for the 3DS!
Despite DQ 11 having the best battle system in the franchise with a solid story with characters the game sure gets dunked on by fans…even tho you could argue it’s the best DQ game in the franchise…
The weirdest thing about DQVIII is they originally gave the USA the orchestral soundtrack and Japan that non-orchestral, and for the 3DS version they did the opposite. Just stick with the orchestral!

I’ve never played a Dragon Quest game before. Do you think the recent remake of III is a good jumping off point for someone first getting into the series?
If you’re okay with a lack of story and just playing for gameplays sake, yes. If not, start with V, VIII or XI. Also, I should’ve mentioned this in the video- the mobile versions of the 2D games are pretty good! So V should be decent to play on your phone. Or of course…. There are other ways 🤣
