It's still crazy to me that Bethesda is in the position they're in right now. Even back in the day, people were forgiving of bugs and jank because Bethesda Game Studios released games with tons of love, imagination and joy embedded in them. So...what happened? And what's next? The RPG That Started A Golden Age

The 90's may forever be the greatest decade for RPGs. It's known as the "Golden Age". But RPGs started hitting home consoles a decade prior. So when exactly did this Golden Age begin? In this video I try to pinpoint an exact year and game. If you disagree and would like to (respectfully) let me know what game YOU think started the Golden Age, let me know in the comments! Shadow Hearts | Tragically Overshadowed Gem
Really great video, im new to the series and I agree that DQ doesn't really have bells and whistles, doesn't have that deep emotional pull that you see from FF4 onwards or that political intrigue from Suikoden but what it doe's have is whimsical worlds and brilliant comedy and with that great Toriyama art that makes it a perfect light hearted adventure with familiarity and consistency, you know what you are in for everytime! I've currently only played 8,4,5 and working on 7 (3ds) at the moment, it's pretty damn easy to fall in love with DQ and I now see why the Japanese love these games so much.
I love Dragon Quest and I haven't played them all yet but I'll say my favorites are #1. Dragon Quest 11 #2. Dragon Quest 5 (PS2) #3. Dragon Quest 3 #4. Dragon Quest 9 (or 8 cant decide) #5. Dragon Quest 1 Idk if it's a hot take but I did not like Dragon Quest 4, although I think it has the best character designs. Also they should bring Dragon Quest 10 to the west already 🚬🗿
5-PS2... 4-NES.... 7-PS1... 3-SNES... 8-PS2. My top 5.
Dragon Quest 7 is literally the best Dragon Quest. It's laughable that you give it just an HM. Joke list.
Come on its just his personal take you can't upset with other people's opinions so easily, and at least he mentioned 7 when most either just ignore it or trash it, I don't think he was so unkind.
I agree that DQV is the best.
You gotta play the PlayStation version of DQV with the orchestra. The story is still legendary but it’s better in 3D.
I have tried so many time to get into V and it just doesn’t do it for me for some reason :/ my order is 8, 11, 9, 2, 6
Dragon quest 3 is best on nes.
Bro you got excellent taste in dragon quest games. Nice wild arms reference too might I add.
Agreed.. 8 has the best music
DQ9 is my all time favorite game. I especially love the multiplayer feature. I beat the game 4-5 times playing solo, 4-5 times playing with a friend or with my sister, and at least 2 times playing in a group of three people. I like how your other group members are just random npcs because that gives you the chance to fully concentrate on the story and build your companions how you want them to be. I’ve never played a game in my life that I enjoyed as much as DQ9 but maybe that is just because of the nostalgia and the fun I had with my friends. Hope they do a remake similar to the DQ8 version for the 3DS!
I remember being so deflated after dq8 that 9 was some weird ds game.
Imo I think dq8 was the true western breakthrough but they messed up the moment um with 9 and X being weird experiments
Ur wrong as hell if u think 8 did things better than 11. What a moronic statement.
Dragon quest 7 was my first and still my favorite.
Despite DQ 11 having the best battle system in the franchise with a solid story with characters the game sure gets dunked on by fans…even tho you could argue it’s the best DQ game in the franchise…
Twilight Princess perfected the art of 3D Zelda while Ocarina of Time set the standard. It has the best version of Link with the best combat, best items, best dungeons, great music, fantastic story, and the greatest character in the entire series which is Midna. The final fight at the end was awesome and Zant was a great side villain. Zelda is supposed to be about lore, story, dungeons, music, and puzzles. The new open world games fail each of those aspects by a country mile. We need to find a better balance in the future that combines both open world exploration and adventure with the traditional Zelda formula as well. Another complaint I have about the newer games is that the master sword is way too damn weak. It’s a sword that supposed to seal the darkness. It’s a sword that is known to be all powerful. Even more powerful than the triforce and yet they made it so weak in the newer games because they didn’t want to ruin their broken weapon durability system. The problem with the newer open world games is that it doesn’t reward you at all for exploration. The last 400 korok seeds are absolutely useless. You get absolutely nothing for collecting all the light roots in TotK. And most of the shrines will offer you an item or weapon that you don’t typically need because you already have stronger items and weapons in your inventory. The linear and more traditional style of Zelda made way for better storytelling which is what got me drawn to the series in the first place.
Dragon quest 8 is my all time favorite. I think it was the first one I actually beat all the way through. I remember being blown away when the story just like this i your final boss and then was like nahhh. it opened up a wider world and story.
@@thejackalswitch8406 Amazing game. One of the very few masterpiece JRPGs on PS2.
See I would argue that Dragon Quest does evolve, and in many ways pushes the system it's on to the limit. I was the first truly expansive, epic adventure on the NES, (Legend of Zelda was a more contained adventure IMO, at least the game world felt much smaller) II, III, IV expanded the world, storytelling, and gameplay. I didn't get to play any of the SNES games because American and I never owned a PS1, but I loved DQVIII which massively improved the characters and storytelling and honestly to this day is still my favorite 3D world map. I don't know why but it's way easier to navigate than any other 3D RPG I've played (which admittedly is not a lot, I'm not a lifelong gamer, I tend to play in concentrated bursts). Just finished XI's demo on the Switch and I agree it's less impressive than VIII outside of the graphics. TL,DR: VIII is my #1 right now!
11 might also be the most story driven but a lot more dialogue doesnt make it a better one. Dq to me relies on the world and interactions with it and the mystery behind it. To me that's what makes a dq game unique.
Agreed!
Nah, I get it. XI is kinda overrated. That's why I'm kinda lukewarm on the XII hype. Well, that and we've had nothing but a teaser image since '20.
Agreed. Plus they said they wanted to move in a “different and darker direction” which is worrisome to me. The joy of DQ is knowing what you’re gonna get with every entry.
Also to you: "Overrated" is an oymoron. Everything is exactly rated as it should be, becuase it is about intersubjective consensus. The thing YOU overrate (and everyone who uses this brainless term) is your opinion.
XI was the first one I played and now I'm hooked on the franchise.
Same! Playing them chronologically now.
That's the great thing about 11 is its as good any game to start with as an introduction you're then going to be familiar with any title and what to expect! Compared to say FF15 or 16 if you start there and went back your playing a vastly different game with different mechanics.
DQ 11 being at the bottom is very controversial and you just nitpick the hell out of it. Other than that Cant disagree with the rest.
Controversial by who? It's not at the bottom for me or at the top. The characters were beyond bland minus sylando I feel. The world didn't feel as mysterious as past entries either. It truly is overhyped. I'd say the majority still put 8 at the top but newcomers love 11 cause it's streamlined to hell
@@bioboost12 "Overrated" is an oymoron. Everything is exactly rated as it should be, becuase it is about intersubjective consensus. Feel free to disagree but your opinion is the anomaly here. Nothing more, nothing less.
Dq 7, 4, 5 and 6 all need the 2d hd remake like 3 got. Yes dq7 3ds looks weird it would look better in 2d hd
DQ7 on PSX is the true DQ7, the "remake" on DS is horsedung, as every "remake" on DS/3DS.
I'll admit it first. I wasn't a DQ fan growing up, but I tried DQ 8 because the main character looked like Goku with a sword 😃
Only in the ps2 ver his high tension at 100 he looks like a Super saiyan 2. was removed on the 3ds ver.
Nice top 5. Myself 1. DQ3 2. DQ5 3. DQ7 4. DQ8 5. DQ9
After an attempt on my life it was dragon quest that pulled me out of the depressive zombie state I had been in for years and reignited my passion for gaming
I’m glad you’re still here. Gaming really can save lives. Sometimes my depression gets so overpowering that I feel like I have no other joys.
As a long time Final Fantasy fan who's in the middle of a gauntlet of all the single player games (currently on FFX), I was thinking of doing a blind gauntlet of the DQ numbered titles. What I'm not sure of though is whether to hold out for the 2D-HD version of 1+2, since it only has "2025" listed for release. Seems like it could be a long wait, but I REALLY love the Octopath-esque style. With a history of ports and newer versions of the older DQ games, I'm curious which ones are considered "definitive" versions. Going back to FF, I've only really played the pixel remaster versions of the first 5 games, having played the PR and SNES version of 6 as well.
Dragon Quest 1-3 aren’t really about the story in my opinion. Even in 3, the most fleshed out one, your characters are just blank slates. 3 has a fantastic world though. And in case this helps you make a decision; there’s a reason why Square Enix put out DQ3 first- it’s chronologically before 1&2. All 3 games have nods to each other.
@WITAWITAVG gotcha. While story is one of the big things I enjoy in games, I just want to expand my JRPG experiences. What I've mainly got under my belt at the moment is FF, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Pokémon, Octopath, and Persona 5. If the appeal to earlier DQ doesn't lie in the plot, then I think it's all the more reason for me to check them out in a comprehensive way. The first couple FF games were FAR from exciting by today's standards, but I took them for what I imagine they were like at their release time
@ Yeah I really enjoy FF1 and DQ1 kinda like simple fairy tales. But they’re a one and done thing for me. I don’t really replay them. I feel like DQ 5, 7, 8 and 11 have the best stories.
Great discussion! Very underrated topic. It also opens up a broader discussion about replayability/replay value in video games. I feel that many games (especially open-world games) are being made to be long and fulfilling for a single play-through, rather than being tightly designed and a joy to replay again and again. There’s something special about a fully fleshed-out, tightly designed, focused, well-paced experience that’s fulfilling but also doesn’t overstay its welcome. Game design that’s deliberate and carefully well-crafted which gives it that polish. I think this is why games like Super Metroid, Doom, Chrono Trigger, traditional Zelda, Super Mario, Resident Evil, and Metal Gear Solid, to name a few, are so well-beloved till this day. They’re not long games and yet, they’re densely packed. There’s things you can miss on your first play-through. You may not even be able to grasp the depths of its gameplay and design on the first play-through. Growing up, Star Fox 64 in particular was very impactful to me in this regard. Games with multiple routings and layers. Multiple approaches, missable upgrades/items, endings, lore, easter eggs, bosses, challenges, etc. Games that are great enough for a casual play-through but you can also dig deeper into it for additional secrets, depth and value. For example, Final Fantasy X does a great job at being straight killer, no filler. And you can engage with the game at a deeper level at your pace. It's never forced on you. Not to mention, most of the side content feels more like side adventures with meaningful rewards rather than chores.
@@radiorah768 I agree. While shorter doesn’t always equal better, I believe that limitations help creativity. A shorter runtime would ideally mean more intention with how you ask a player to spend their time with your game.
DQ6。SFC Version. Not the DS.
@@thatminimalisttrainer Nice! DQ6 intrigues me because it has a lesser reputation than the other games, but for no real reason. I’ve only sunk like 5-6 hours into it.
@@WITAWITAVG Yeah. It's a personal preference. When I was younger, my 1st DQ was 5 on SFC Problem was, I didn't understand Japanese so I got stuck somewhat earlier on. DQ5 DS admittedly, made it more accessible for me years later. Also because they allowed 4 people instead of the SFC 3. As for 6, I was able to play through much deeper even though it was in Japanese but I had a chinese guide to help. I didn't finish it back then but I kept it in my mind to finish. And I did it, in adulthood with the downloaded English ROM. The DS version I didn't like because of name changes. And no monster recruitment. But I did enjoy the enhanced DS graphics. But DQ6 SFC version is and always gonna be my fave. Along with Rudra no Hihou and Estpolis. The lesser known RPGs when people talk about SFC era RPGs.
Hell yes. I wish they would finish it one day. I still play it and have beat it multiple times. Still my go to. Just save a lot because the bugs. Edit: I just noticed you said SFC. I meant the SNES translated version. That's the one I play.
@@chrischandler889 regardless, we mean the same thing. The fan translated one. The free ROM one can download easily to save $.
I’m so glad I found your videos-they’re incredibly thoughtful, and honestly, criminally under-viewed. I relate so strongly to what you’ve said here. I’ve played every Final Fantasy game (except the MMOs and XIII), and the themes of false religious doctrine run deeply throughout the series. Final Fantasy Tactics, of course, stands out as a powerful example. It dives so effectively into the tension between faith, power, and corruption, and it resonates with real-world struggles that so many of us have experienced. Your story about growing up in the Roman Catholic Church and becoming disillusioned really struck a chord with me. I’m from Newfoundland, Canada, a place with its own complicated history with the Catholic Church. If you’re not familiar, you could look up “Mount Cashel”-it was a particularly heinous chapter in the Church’s history. My father had friends who were directly impacted by the abuse there, so this topic feels deeply personal. What’s remarkable, though, is how Newfoundland has grown and changed as a community since those tragedies. The Mount Cashel abuse was horrific, but it became a turning point for the province. People here had enough-they decided to confront what had happened rather than ignore it. Today, while Catholic culture is still visible in Newfoundland (you’ll see it in the iconography, architecture, and even some of the traditions), there’s a profound shift. People still hold onto the sense of community and heritage, but the faith itself, along with the authority of the Church, has largely been abandoned. When I talk to others in Newfoundland, many will still describe themselves as “Catholic,” but it’s more about cultural identity than religion. Faith in the Church-and for many, including myself,, faith in God-has eroded. What remains is a collective move away from dogma, especially its more damaging aspects like homophobia, while keeping the parts of Catholicism that foster community and connection. In this way, I think Newfoundland has done something remarkable: it has rebuilt a cultural identity while shedding much of the harmful ideology.
The first Dragon Warrior game (I'm an American it was Dragon Warrior then) opened the door to other JRPGs and tabletop RPGs. Literally life changing. Love the DQ series.
VII is my favorite, but fair picks
I knew I wasn't alone.
I love VII. I even love the PS1 version. I love its long. I get lost in it. The story is great. The effort they put into it is insane. I forgot but it was like 70,000 lines of dialogue.. lol. Still get sad about Kiefer.
Great video man its always awesome to see more people talking about Dragon Quest. If you really love 5 I highly recommend checking out the Japanese ps2 version. You can get a translation patch for it and have the option to emulate it or go the actual hardware route with a bit of a work around. But you get in my opinion, better visuals and a fully orchestrated soundtrack that really elevates that games music to being close to as good as 8’s
I will definitely play that version one day!
Do you prefer reading? Check the description for the written version of this video!
been a dragon quest fan for a long time starting with 9, which is my personal favorite, as a kid and playing tons of the other ones as i grew up. cant wait to re-experience 3 again one i buy the remake. 4 and 11 are definetely some of my favorites too
I’m waiting to see if they’ll do a remake or port of IX!
Great video! Definitely need to check out this series.
If you prefer your RPGs to be more story reliant, I’d start with VIII or XI. If you don’t mind less emphasis on story- III, IV and V are great. Like I said in the video, V has an awesome story, but it’s still very much an old school game.
Dragon Quest 5 is my favorite DQ game! Top 5 probably would be: #1. Dragon Quest 5 #2. Dragon Quest 7 #3. Dragon Quest 9 #4. Dragon Quest 3 #5. Dragon Quest 4
Great taste!
@@WITAWITAVG Thanks!
That's gotta be the highest I've ever seen VII ranked.
@AxelWedstar411 I really loved the story in 7, and the job system was pretty fun too. Orgedemir is one of my favorite DQ villains.
Dragon warrior 7..as it was...is probably my favorite. I think it's the most mysterious out of them all. Plus the job system was awesome. Ridiculously long game. I'd say #1 Dq 7 #2 Dq 5 #3 Dq 8 #4 Dq 6 #5 Dq 4 11 is good but there are a few issues I have with it. I really didn't care for the characters minus sylvando. I'm not a fan of on screen enemies mostly because it also makes the game easier since you don't need to deal with item management nearly as much...I forgive chrono trigger though.
We need a DQ8 HD definitive with all the stuff from both versions
The weirdest thing about DQVIII is they originally gave the USA the orchestral soundtrack and Japan that non-orchestral, and for the 3DS version they did the opposite. Just stick with the orchestral!
Imo the version with less stuff is actually the best version ps2 purist for life
@@dmen0563with you there. People hype the 3DS version for having Morrie and Red but i love how the game is tailored to have 4 characters and how well that works
Finally played the game this weekend and am getting back to your video! I loved the game, especially that unique way Team Ico craft harrowing yet beautiful worlds, but I also loathed the game. I’ve had a cat now for about 5 years and I definitely saw a lot of that animal-like personality in Trico. It was super endearing and was an absolute marvel at just how lifelike he felt, even though he’s a creature that doesn’t even exist. But just like you, that AI was also a HUGE point of frustration for me and I even got stuck on the same water section as you for minutes on end. The camera was also somehow more broken than SOTC and just like you said, the final third of the game feels very unrefined and puzzles became so obfuscated that it drove me insane trying to figure out if I just wasn’t getting it or if Trico’s AI was messing up. All that said, it was unforgettable and although my frustrations will keep me from replaying it for a long time, it was so refreshing to play something so original and unique.
Thanks for coming back! I'm glad you were able to see through the finicky AI and still walk away with a unique happiness. This game is super special. I can't help but feel like games such as TLG shifted Sony to the less artsy and more "guaranteed seller" direction they're in now (minus Concord haha).
@ yeah it’s a real shame they pretty much don’t take any chances anymore. Astro Bot is the closest thing as of late and I would still hardly consider that a risky release.
The biggest issue with the assertion that game prices aren't too high because current prices are less than what they should be according to inflation, is that it doesn't take into account that purchasing power has dropped over time because the average income hasn't kept up with the rate of inflation. People base their price expectations on how much money that they have to spend, not by inflation rates.
8:00 Fortnite!? I'm sorry, do you have any idea how much money Epic have thrown into Fortnite? That may be the most expensive game ever made at this point. Granted it didn't start out like that, but once they transitioned to battle royale that game has had resources just piled into it.
Great job on this one, Dylan!
Developers really show that they don’t know who their audience is. But it’s your videos that are letting them know bro! And man I was just getting ready to start my own career in game development, but why would I if I’m just going to be laid off
The Gaming industry needs a hard reset on its back of house philosophy. Triple A Games need to be scaled down and given more time to cook, thus giving studios the ability to work on and release side projects to whet the appetites of consumers while they wait for the big titles. Consumers also need to be willing to try out those side projects. Instead of getting caught up in the same 3-4 titles a year. That’s how we got so many creative titles back during both the ps2 generation as well as the 360 generation.
@@cycosomatik Yeah. It sucks that a few million dollars profit is seen as “chump change” to these publishers now. It they recalibrated how they viewed money, it could change everything.
It’s really frustrating for sure. You’re right about it affecting people wanting to enter the industry as I’ve often thought about trying to acquire more skills to possibly get a job in game dev but man, those layoffs really make it hard to be excited or even want to do that. Not only that but the people already in it just keep getting screwed over and have their whole livelihood flipped upside down.
I didn’t bring it up in the video, but the AAA scene being in shambles makes me want to buy and play more indie stuff. If you still have that desire to get into game dev- try indie!
Do you prefer to read? Check out the written version of this video! Link in description!
Developers are being laid off so quickly that they don’t have a chance to develop and mature their skills alongside their team. Talent and skill are developed though experience. When it comes to big flagship projects, iteration and learning from the first draft is key. A team can never reach their "peak" when they're constantly being diverted to make big budget trend chasing games. It took the first two iterations of Zelda for us to get A Link to the Past which eventually lead to Ocarina of Time. It took the first two iterations of Metroid for us to get Super Metroid. It took Demon Souls and Dark Souls for us to get Elden Ring. It usually takes 1-2 entries for a franchise to hit its stride. I enjoy seeing companies create games that reflect the knowledge, skills, and experience they’ve gained over the years. The big budget trend chasing games make it hard to pursue this approach. One strike and you're out.
@@radiorah768 Yeah, it’s brutal. Uncharted 1 isn’t a very great game imo, but without it we wouldn’t have gotten Uncharted 2 and 3. Nowadays, if Uncharted 1 came out and it “only” sold a million copies- the IP would be done.
I had nothing wrong with Breath of the Wild I thought it was a pretty good game but Tears of the Kingdom on the other hand I'll never forgive Nintendo for that crap game!
I really hope you take the time to tie in the sequel to your commentary videos as it really isn’t as girly and shallow as most make it seem, and it continues the story of Tidus and Yuna gracefully ❤
Thank you for your kind comments. I never actually played through X-2, but I’ve been considering it.
