    My personal top 5 are:
    5) 4 because of the characters and how the game's story progresses
    4) 3 because of the innovations of the series, job system, and just how well it has aged
    3) 7 but only the 3ds version
    2) 5 because the story and the ability to recruit monsters
    1) 8 because reasons!

I'm with you on this one, I love pretty much every DQ game I've ever played but 8 is my absolute favorite. I played it to death, resurrected it, and then played it to death again three times over.
It is worth mentioning that DQ5 got a re-make for the PS2 and it's also very good, 5 is actually another favorite of mine along with 4 and the first Torneko game. I also still really enjoy the original DQ.

3DS version has more content (both gameplay and story) as well as a lot of Quality of Life improvment, if you play the 3DS version I don't think the presentation and music (which is still really good despite not being orchestred) alone justify to replay it on PS2.

I would say 5. Hence it has the best story that will grip you to the end. Alto the gameplay is a bit different cuz you also recruit monsters. Not a bad thing in my book. After that I would go for 4. Which also have nice story. Check out johnnys review of it. 6 is by no means a bad game. And a special one for me since it was my first one. It has a nice class system. It is the longest of the 3 games and the hardest. It has an ok story with a nice twist. It's hard tho. For some reason i died a lot maybe cuz it was my first one. The last
Boss took me like 11 tries at least. All the games have a high encounter rate. That's just the way of dragon quest

Love seeing the DQ series getting lots of love from your channel, it's definitely one of my favorite RPG series of all time, even moreso than Final Fantasy which can be hit or miss but DQ always hits it out of the park with every new release. I can't wait to play XI, in the meantime I have all the other main series games including the SFC imports, and can't wait to go through each of them. I already love the series but so much of it I still have to experience!

Dragon Quest 3 needs some love too. For it's time it was a massive jump ahead in the series. Character creation with your choice of 3 followers from different classes. The massive length of the game compared to it's predecessors, and the surprise storyline link to the original game. It really was the perfect game to complete the Erdrick / Loto trilogy.

Dragon quest 7 on 3ds is the only one I've ever finished so that is my favourite by default, it's a huge game though and quite heavy going at times but was very rewarding to play. Looking forward to the Nintendo Switch version of dragon quest 11 which hopefully gets released over here, I really can't stand the idea of playing huge RPGs tied to the tv anymore, grinding is much more appealing when I have time to kill on the train to work

I've played all the core games except DQX, as it was never released here in Europe. And yes, DQVII is fantastic. Though personally, I'm not a fan of visiting the past and present so often. It felt too much like I'm backtracking. Doesn't help that DQVI did a lot of the same thing, but you spend a lot more time in each world, so it doesn't feel that backtracking-y. For that reason alone, I think DQVI is slightly better. But both are excellent games.
Though as a little fun fact, DQ1-8 are out on iOS (minus nr 7), and the first six are cheap and easy enough to play on a tablet. DQVIII works well too, but you need to move the characters with one thumb, and the camera with the other. It gets a bit clunky on a touchscreeen. But DQ1-6 are highly recommended, even if "only" on a tablet. They look better than the DS-versions due to the bigger screen, but plays really well.
But do yourself a favor and avoid the first one. It's rather crap, as you only have one character, and it only lasts a few hours. You can easily finish it in one sitting if you want to. For me, the series didn't pick up steam until DQIV. And sorry for long post. I just looove the series. :-)

    • @alexperaza9475
      @alexperaza9475 7 лет назад

7 is good but one of my least favorites to be honest. The 3DS version is a vast improvement over the original but it's still one of the most tedious, fetch-questy entries in the series. Try 8. 4 - 6 and 9 on the DS are all fantastic as well.
My top five are 8, 4, 6, 5, 9. You could switch 6 and 5 around and I would be OK with that too :)
EDIT: Wait wait, I somehow forgot about 3 which I've probably played more than any other entry. New list: 8, 4, 6 (or) 5, 3, 9. Yep, there are six games in my top five. I regret nothing.

Dragon Quest VIII still is one of best JRPG's I have ever played and the very one that propelled my love for the DQ Franchise. DQIX was also so good with the visibly equipment customisation, they should really intergrate more of that in their games.

    I knew 8 was gonna be your fav, I've gotten it on the 3DS day one and I've been playing it for the first time since and well... It's probably my least favourite DQ game >w>';
Every RPG fan seems to love the heck out of that game, and you know what? So do I! I'm enjoying it greatly! But not as much as the other DQ games that I've played... I still haven't finished it, I kinda have to schedule time to play it so that I'll have the time and investment to put in... I'm not as big into RPGs as I used to be or as I wanted to be, but I still play it sometimes, and it's great fun exploring the game's world and its towns and dungeons, talking to NPCs and getting to know them...
But DQ8 is the least Dragon-Quest-Like of the Dragon Quest games that I've played... Yeah it's still got the gameplay art and music down, in fact, it might just have my favourite soundtrack in the series, but presentation-aside, DQ8 isn't really structured like a Dragon Quest game... It's too linear! In that game you're pursuing someone, so you're always led to follow them wherever they go, so your path through the game is pretty much completely preset as far as I've seen! In the other DQ games that I've played, most of them start linear, but the further you go, the more the world opens itself to you, and the more freedom you have to explore wherever you want! Sure you still have a goal that you have to fulfill eventually, but in many of them you can get to the mc-guffins you need to get throughout the game in whatever order you want by the time you get the ship... In DQ8 you're still following a linear path even after you got the ship...
My favourite Dragon Quest game is Dragon Quest IX on the DS, being able to completely customise my party and equip them with gear which _actually appears in their 3D models_ (unlike in DQ8 with a few exceptions) was amazing! The crafting system from DQ9 was MUCH better than the DQ8 one too, I rarely craft anything in DQ8, and whenever I do I'm stuck only being able to craft items that I already have the recipe for, in DQ9 you can try your luck by combining items, and more than just 2 or 3 items, without a recipe and see what you can get, and adventurous players can really be rewarded with damn good items that way! Not to mention the items you can craft in DQ9 are often more useful than the ones in DQ8...
But the best part about DQ9 was the structure of the game's story and progression, since you're controlling a custom party, your characters are not the ones that are gonna get the development, some people don't like that, and I understand why, but to me DQ9 has executed that PERFECTLY! In that game, the characters that get the development are the NPCs you meet throughout your adventure, each town you visit has its own little story with its own little cast of characters, and they're the ones you get to know and love! That makes for a MUCH more memorable adventure! It makes the world of DQ9 feel alive and breathing, it feels lived-in and it makes sense! In SO many other RPGs it feels like the world spins around your protagonists, and it's all about them, the future of the world rests in their hands... But in DQ9 your characters feel like a party of wandering good-doers who don't really need to have a personality and a back-story, they just wander the world and help people out because they're just nice like that, you're not gonna love them for who they are, you're gonna love them for what they do! They're not the reason why the sun rises and sets every day, they're just a part of this world that you want to explore, that you want to get to know!
My other favourite DQ games are, in that order: Dragon Quest 1, Dragon Quest 5 and Dragon Quest 3, although I haven't played nearly enough of 3, I want to put in the time and play it once I get my 3DS hacked so that I can install an SNES emulator on it and play it that way, I have no patience for RPGs unless they're on a handheld (I'm very thankful for the DS port of Chrono Trigger, was it not for that port I'd still not have finished it)
I just really wish they remade Dragon Quest III within the same mold as Dragon Quest IX, but on the 3DS instead of the DS so that it would have good graphics and good sound quality, I mean, DQ9 is pretty much DQ3 all over again, but with a different story and made better in every way (except for the music), but the structure is exactly the same...

I don't really see your point. you give immense praise to DQ9 eventhough what you seem to critize the most about 8, the fact that its very linear, is the same issue that 9 has. I don't remember a single time before the post-game where you'd have any sort of choice in terms of main story progression. Its been a while since I played through it, but as far as I can remember, even the order in which you recover the golden fruits is predetermined, no?
Yes 8 is linear, but numerous optional islands, new areas to discover once you get access to the godstone that lets you fly and the gigantic monster arena sidequest make for enough of a diversion from the main story in my opinion. also, if we're being real here, almost no DQ game after 3 allowed for THAT much non-linear story progression. sure, there was a little bit here and there, but it was never the focus of the post original trilogy DQ games.
also, in DQ 8 you can combine items randomly as well, not just with receipes, and its the only way to get some of the best equipment in the game (like the best weapons for pretty much every weapon type outside of whips and an abundance of incredibly strong armor and accessoires) so that point is rendered completely moot.
and like, lets be real, outside of the main angel cast, that village plagued by pestilence, the seaside village with the weird accent and the egyptian-inspired town, no NPC interactions REALLY stood out. meanwhile, DQ 8 has both: incredibly touching NPC stories (the whole kaldarasha deal with valentina being the orphaned daughter of parents that died because of the actions of her adoptive father yet still loving him and teaching him to love himself again, a king who keeps his entire kingdom in grief for a year after the death of the love of his life who learns to finally move on after seeing her one last time, an adoptive pair of incredibly competitive twins who learn to love and care for each other through the last will of their adoptive father, an all-around exceptional member of the abbey rising to and eventually being corrupted by power, only to somewhat return to his old, noble self towards the end,...) as well as development of the characters you actually play as.
also, at the end of the day, the future of the world DOES also rest in the hands of the DQ9 party since corvus is going to destroy everything unless your party stops him and returns him to the light, so that point is moot as well.
At the end of the day, its fine if you don't like DQ8 as much as other DQ games, but a lot of your arguments come off as shaky at best and faulty at worst.

Johnny! You're the one who got me into Dragon Quest. Over the last few years I have scrounged up all main NA DQ games/ versions and played through most of them so thus I feel the right to say nice list except for DQ 6, which was for some reason very daunting for me.
    Anyway, my list:
    1. DQ 8- 3DS. Updated in all the right ways.
    2. DQ 3- GBC version. This was my first and will always be memorable.
3+4. Tie between 4 and 5 on the DS. Notice How I have Pachisi /TnT DQ games on here lol
4.. DQ 9 - Customization was King here. Would be higher but had some ridiculous side quests which caused me to lose my mind! Also takes a bit too long to get into.

Dragon Warrior will always be special to me. Surprisingly (for me), it was the first game I sat and beat. My first RPG experience, and at the beginning of some not too fun times for my sisters and I. Not trying to get dark or anything, just when I see this particular series, I always think of those times. It was a temporary escape from the realities of those times. DW3 came out, I was in foster care. Crazy... All is well now though! Have a beautiful family of my own. I own DQ 7 and 8 on my 3ds and plan on getting all that are available for the system. Just can't help but think back whenever I play this series of games.
