@Vegesther Thankfully the DS version of DQ4 is actually a port of the PSX version...
With the Party Chat removed due to incomplete translation...
That was completed in the Mobile Port THANK GOD...
But then Apps can't be moved to SD and nowadays any phone with 16gb or less is literally always about to fill.

I dunno, man. I vastly prefer dvd cases to jewel cases. Cd cases easily crack and break as well as cut your hand in the wrong circumstances. I also prefer full sized (Xbox era) manuals to cd sizes manuals.
I think mgs2 was the last beefy, meaningful manual I ever used. That or Morrowind.

Over the past cpl years I've collected nearly all of the Dragon Quest games on 3DS, Switch, and PS4. Growing up I never gave the series a chance, now I find myself immersed in it thinking "ALL THE WASTED YEARS!"
Johnny & Kim I appreciate all of the reviews the two of you have made over the years. You've been a big part of why I initially decided to dive into the DQ world. It's hard not to vibe off all your enthusiasm!

This is such a coincidence! I've been playing this game slowly on 3DS since August for the first time and it's becoming one of my favorite Dragon Quest games. Yes, it's really long, but I like how I can play one self-contained section every week or so while I play other stuff, kind of like tuning into my new favorite show when a new episode airs.
It's also just such a welcoming game! When you save a town, they throw you a party, there's food abound--the game just wants you to hang out and have a good time. It's the friendliest game I've played in a long time. I really love it, and I'm glad you guys celebrated it for its 20th year anniversary

Wow! I can't believe it's been 20 years! I picked it up 20 years ago and loved it, and of course I got the remake on 3ds on day 1. I will say though when I played the 3ds version, despite all the quality of life improvements, I still found myself feeling that I wish I could switch to the original look. It was for sure nostalgia, but that PS1 look has a special place in my heart.

The thing about Dragon Quest VII is that it's not about the main story but rather the smaller ones. The lives that the protagonists interact with and change along the way, those are the ones that shine. It's a different kind of JRPG and maybe because of that is one which pops into my head from time to time. I really liked it. Heck, I think the more time passes, the more I understand how much I enjoyed it.

Kim, you really got good at explaining those games you got into. You got it absolutely narrowed down in the first two to three sentences.
You two got really good at doing those episodes together. I "request" you two doing more of those ones Johnny traditionally does on its own together. Thinking especially 'New Game Stuff' here.
It wozld be awesome having someone there, that has not been around when you, Johnny, played the early classics, and watched early Anime. Would be so much better than you just talking to the camera.
    To make sure:
I am from the early days, and I still would love to see this happen.
    Anyway...
Thanks so much for what you do

Hey Johnny!! Would you please do a video on your 2004? Somebody commented on a reply of mine and made me realized just that. 2004, at least for me, has been one of the best years in gaming for sure! Would love to hear your thoughts on the year that brought GTA San Andreas, Half Life 2, MGS Snake Eater, Kotor and tons more!!

I had it pre ordered back in 01. Played the heck out of it.

I bought 7 the day it came out and it was the first DQ game I fully played. I had previously mostly just watched friends play the first 3 on NES, and played little bits here & there.
I think it's a great game, and have since played all the main series games

I feel like DQVII is three or four great DQ games smashed together into something that's WAY too long. It's probably my least favorite DQ game, but that's not saying much considering how high quality the series is!

Dragon Quest 8 was the first game i played, as it was the first game in the series, that came out in Europe, though i've never completed the game. I recently bought DQ11: Definitive Edition S for PS4

Im so glad I preordered Dragon Quest 7 and 8 for 3ds when they released I think my GameStop only got like three copies of them and they sure have shot up in price

Man I really wanted to like this game. I love Dragon Quest but man this one drags on a while. The overwhelming amount of backtracking just soured my experience with it. Got about 70 hours into the 3DS version and couldn't take it anymore.

The one thing I hated about the 3ds remake you didn’t keep the skills that you learned when you changed classes

  • @thepuppetmaster9284

Yeah 2001 also has Devil May Cry 1, Silent Hill 2, Jak & Daxter 1, Ace Combat 4, GTA III, Onimusha 1, Tony Hawk 3, Max Payne 1, Fatal Frame 1, Gran Turismo 3, ICO, and CvS 2. It was a big year for video games. Although i never played DQ VII and nowadays a brand new copy of 3DS version is very expensives 😓

I still remember I spent over 120+ hrs on this game to beat it back in 2014 as my backlog goes. I couldn't realize at that time "DQ Warrior VII" as one of the Dragon Quest saga series!

IIRC the anecdote about DQ7 choosing to release on PS1 vs N64 was true of FF7 as well. Square was originally set to maintain their relationship with Nintendo but after realizing the cost savings of the PS1 disc-format, they shifted gears. Rumor had it that Nintendo held a grudge against Square for years!

Since 7 never came out here in the UK, my first time playing it was on 3DS and I LOVED IT. Honestly feel its the most underrated game in the mainline series. Also only took me 77 hours to beat. No idea what people are doing putting in over 100 hours into it lol! Maybe the OG PS1 version since I hear the pacing is considerably slower, but the 3DS version?

The PS1 version is way slower, even mastering vocations is slower (like, WAY slower)

The PS1 version took me 215 hours to beat and collect the things I wanted. It was longest RPG I ever played.

It's a SUUUUUUPER long game, which probably turns a lot of people off. But if you break down your playing sessions such that you focus on each fragment of the past as it's own smaller game, you can make the game feel much more manageable. Some of the islands/fragments only need like 30 minutes of investment, others need a few hours, but none of them require more than that. It's much easier to to manage "Ok, in an hour or two, I'll have this island completed." rather than "I'm 20 hours in, shoot, still 60 hours to go..."
