I was a big Dragon Warrior fan growing up in the NES/SNES era. This game was featured in Nintendo Power as they tried to build and gauge interest in releasing it on the SNES stateside, which of course they never did. Those import game store ads listing Dragon Quest VI tempted me for a long time despite its $96? price tag (like $188 today). Games like this not being released in America contributed to me wanting to learn Japanese. I ended up doing a homestay, a study abroad, minoring in Japanese, and now I've lived in Japan for several years. At this point I own the game, the soundtrack, and even a CD Theater retelling of the story, and yet I've still never gotten around to making my way through this game.

If you don't want to dig up an old nintendo DS and an expensive DQ6 Cart the official ios/android release isn't bad.

Dragon Quest VI always felt unfinished to me. At the beginning you have this big story sequence and quest to defeat Mudo, where he's really built up and there's some cool stuff along the way. But then after that's all done, you're just told to wander around and defeat whatever evil. There's one point later on where some demon guy is talking about the 4 great archfiends, and how Mudo was one of them, but then he also mentions how some other two guys who I already defeated were also a part of this group. I would have known Mudo was one of those "archfiends" without anyone telling me just because of how much he was built up, but then meanwhile I beat those two other guys without even knowing who they were. If every archfiend was given a sequence as great as Mudo's, I think this game would be much better.

That sounds a little funny though. Like something from one punch man. You learn some people you beat were suppose to be big deals

Finally someone with different opinions on this game that aren't just "it's the black sheep of the series" presentation-wise this is the best of the snes dragon quest offerings and people aren't ready to admit how close in comparison this game and final fantasy VI are when it boils down to comparing the franchise releases side-by-side.

Dragon Quest VI had big shoes to fill after DQV which is a lot of people's favorite of the series. I think DQ6 is an alright game it's pretty fun, but falls a little short of DQ5. 5 is my personal favorite of the series so I am biased in that regard though. In the SNES era DQ6 was a major graphical improvement over it's predecessors and the job system was a nice addition to the gameplay. I think the thing with DQ6 though is that the story is kind of weak in the game compared to DQ5. I think the gameplay of 6 is pretty fun and the music is definitely good, but the story definitely kind of was a weak point of the game. I agree with you too it's definitely one of the more challenging DQ games. Some of the big story fights in the game are pretty tough. Overall, I'd say DQ6 is a cool fun game it is worth playing for sure, but it does have some flaws here and there.

One of my favourite DQ games honestly. Know it has its flaws but there’s so much content on it + the feeling you’re having a fever dream while you’re playing haha.
Question though, doesn’t the king summon Nokturnus instead of Mortamor? I was thought it was super cool how you have this parallel story that you can optionally go for it post game.
    Great video btw.

I played through all of the DQ games last year, and I think Dragon Quest 6 (Android release of the DS Port) was probably one of my favorites. I think the issue with the game is that a lot of the more interesting story developments (getting your memory back) and gameplay mechanics (the advanced vocations) are all on the back-end.

This review was a bit disappointing, if I'm being honest. I guess I can't expect everyone to share the same opinions as me, but I was hoping that you would go a little bit deeper into the rich story and characters.
A lot of people seem to miss the subtext of this game because they see it appear low on "best of" lists and go into it assuming that it will be forgettable.
I mean, come on. The backstory to the flying-bed? That's very surface level, but even that shows that this game has more to offer than what everyone wants to assume.
I highly recommend checking out the Dragon Quest VI - 1995 Developer Interview.

    • @JasonGravesPoser
      @JasonGravesPoser  9 месяцев назад +2

The bed part was a highlight, climbing that wall was a unique dungeon idea. The backstory wasn't much more than the kid died and wanted the courage badge though right?

    • @HughAverageHomoMan

subtext doesnt make a game good or memorable if the game its tethered to is as boring as gravel.

I never let the hype dissuade me, I definitely want to play Draqon Quest VI. The problem is that the only console I own is the Switch and that only has Dragon Quest I-III and XI as well as a few spin-offs. I would happily buy dragon Quest IV-IX as well as an offline version of X if Square Enix would just release them for the Switch.

Emulate them until you'll be able to buy them.

@@KeyleeTamirian You have a point, I just greatly prefer playing games on a console. Also I have been trying to support only official releases of games. I have access to so many now that my manager gave me her old PlayStation 4 after getting a PS5 for Christmas and getting a deal on a Wii U that I might be able to keep myself occupied until the rest of the Dragon Quest series is actually released on a system.

The soundtrack by Koichi Sugiyama is simply next level.
The dialogue in the unofficial fan translation is often poor.
Agree that encounter rate is overly tedious.
On DS enemies have 75% HP and give 120% XP.
This rebalancing takes a lot of the challenge away.
The side quests are plentiful adding depth to the game.

    Only talking about DQ.
I like 6 better than 7, just because the more modern 7 are long and PSX version was long with horrible load times.
Not sure if my ratings are based on the Dejapp translations or the English release, but I actually like 6 better than 5 but they are most likely close for me. Maybe I need to go back and play 5 though.

This is my favorite of the two SNES Dragon Quest games. I played Phantasy Star III long before I played Dragon Quest V (I have the DS releases of IV, V, and VI but got VI first then V and IV later while I played Phantasy Star III not long after it came out in the US). I was expecting who I married in Dragon Quest V to be a huge impact and never entirely got over the disappointment of how little it meant to the story.

DQVI is...I mean, I guess it's fine. It's a playable JRPG, alright. Sure.
Yet somehow I pretty much instantly forget everything about its world and characters the instant I'm not actually playing it, which is damn weird considering how unforgettable entries like V and VIII are. It's like it flashes you with the MiB memory eraser thingy during the end credits.

The last boss (main story) was Deaththamoor (7:59), not Dark Dream referenced here (15:20). Dark Dream is the bonus/post-game boss. DQVI is charming in its own way. Personally I'd say the weakest of the 4-5-6 trilogy, but still fun like your review rightfully conveys.
Edit: Ah I get what you mean last, as I just finished your DQV review and you point out how Esturk is the big baddie (postgame) there. Great vids.

Personal favorite Dragon Quest is Dragon Quest X and it’s not even close but in order to make it fair for the other games I will say my second favorite game is probably Dragon Quest 2 (specifically the snes remake or the iOS version) though 1 and 3 are strong contenders as well as DQVIII. But none of them are close to being as good as DQX and no argument in existence can change that.
