That's exactly what I did here. We are going to look at each entry and put it against the identical entry in it's competition to see which series has the best entries. FF7 is the worst. The graphics are disgusting and the music and sound effects made me wish I was deaf. DQ7 is way better. I've also heard DQ 10 is phenomenal , FF10 was mediocre at best IMHO. DQ is way more fun and memorable.

also it's a no brainer to compare ff11 to dragon quest 10, and a sin not to include ff12.
and now to go on a rant on ff13:
Also ff13 is the epitome of production value in all of gaming, even if the gameplay suffers for it,
I still argue ff13 is a few budgetary and time constrained ideas away from being one of the greatest final fantasies.
The story, and characters are complex and developed enough, and start off as genuinely flawed and unlikeable and actually develop over the adventure, the story is great, as is the battle system and sound track.
The only thing missing from ff13 is slightly more interesting to traverse maps and side content imo. but i still think ff13 is a 9/10.
The sequels are more creative and fun interms of gameplay and side content but the games arent as grand and polished as the original 13 and the casts having no where near as much focus or development.

@@DaRkLoRd-rc5yu the 13 sequels had cool gameplay but I wish they were their own thing cause I just did not give a shit about the stories. the fact that they needed to retcon the original's ending to make 2 work was the first red flag

      I highly Disagree.
2 is horrid, with awful level design, bad growth rates, and slow combat speed. 4 is obtuse, horribly paced, has horrendous AI and the party stop being characters in the final chapter. 5 is a rushed mess with horridly high drop rates, poorly balanced XP gain that's heavily in your favor, and has awful graphics. 6's class system is poorly designed and tacked on because character base stats incline them to certain jobs anyway, the cast stops speaking after killing murdaw, the dual world is tacked on and has no visual distinction.
7 is good but the pacing is horrid. 9 is chasing every 7th gen trend and has a very bland story. 11 has broken combat, bland characters, and is overly reliant on throwbacks.

I still play the retro FF's lots thanks in part to how often they like to port/re-release them for every platform under the sun... The modern entries just don't catch my interest though. I think past VI it would be more interesting to put them in relation to release date rather than numbers, putting FFVIII against DQVIII kind of feel bad honnestly so doing like this for me it would be (excluding the MMOs cause I don't play MMO) :
DQI VS FFI : FFI (Obvious winner FFI is honnestly a game that even today can be fun to play while DQI... not so much)
DQII VS FFII : I honnestly dislike both, give a slight edge to FFII cause I think it's story was impressive for 8-bit title.
DQIII VS FFIII : Well DQIII, obvious winner cause I don't like FFIII despite him introducing an excellent system it just doesn't reach it's full potential here, and FFIII has a lot of issue like having to cast Mini through an entire dungeon or the ending being an absolute grind fest.
DQIV VS FFIV : Hmm that's a tough one for me, I love both game but I'm gonna give this point to FFIV just because I enjoy the characters and story much more, plus you forgot one big factor FFIV introduce the ATB system which is a system I always enjoy and was revolutionnary at the time.
DQV VS FFV : Now I think I'm gonna get a lot hate here but I'm giving this to FFV without any doubt, storywise I like what DQV's hero is going through, but I couldn't care less for the other characters while I love the character from FFV and the synergy between was just very enjoyable and so I was more into the story than DQV despite FFV's story being more light hearted as an all, also unpopular opinion but I love Exdeath as villain cause goddamn this as to be one of the most competent villain ever (and unlike Nimzo at least he act instead of letting his underlings do the work for him). But the biggest factor here is the gameplay I fucking love the Job System of FFV, the amount of fun I had in this game was immense there is just so much to experiment here, while DQV I didn't like the monster system at all, the wife was here only for 2-3 hours (which doesn't even include a boss fight), once the child join there's almost no point to any other monsters outside of the ones that have Multi-Heal, Zing or Kazing and the wife is completly useless when getting back due to the severe lack of level.
DQVI VS FFVI : Personnaly I don't like FFVI that much but I'm still giving it my point here, cause at least FFVI was enjoyable to play, and I like the balls they got from making the villain win and destroy the world, and making the second act open-world with making it full of sidequest while having the Final boss accessible (fun fact years later DQXI will rip-off FFVI plot twist for the transition from Act 1 to Act 2 and rip-off the WoR structure in it's act 3 XD).
So now I'm going by release date (in US/EU) :
DQVII (2000) VS FFIX (2000) : Now I only played the 3DS version of DQVII which I heard is much better than the PS1 version. That being said this is a really tough one for me, cause I love the world of DQVII I think that it has one of the most massive world and back ground I ever seen in a J-RPG every new places I was exciting of what I will found, what will happen and how it will turn for these places in the present, I also have to mention the soundtrack cause it's my favorite in the DQ Franchise and IMO perfectly set the tone. Meanwhile however I enjoy the character of FFIX a lot more, and the plot was definitly better overall. Gameplay wise I like the class system of DQVII even tough I think it's to bad that it resolve around getting more powerfull class but it was still fun to play for me, meanwhile FFIX has a better skill system but I didn't like how slow the ATB fills and the animation are compare to FFVII or even VIII. So in the end I give this point to FFIX just cause I enjoy the game more overall.
DQVIII (2006 in France) VS FFXII (2006) : OH Boy this is the toughest one for me, unpopular opinion but FFXII is my favorite FF while DQVIII is my favorite DQ. These are 2 games that I litterally played hundred of hours and finish multiple time and get there ehanced version (IZJS for XII and 3DS for DQVIII).
This games actually have 1 thing in common their gigantic world, honnestly back in the PS2 era both games blow my fucking mind on how big they were, how there was to explore, however on that aspect FFXII is a clear winner for me, even to day I'm still impress that they were able to make a game this big but also with so much variety in the place you visit they are equivalent in size but in term of diversity of the place explored FFXII blow DQVIII out of the window, exploration wise I also think FFXII was a lot more interesting to explore and has more thing to do than DQVIII so I give this point to FFXII.
Gameplay wise FFXII's Gambit system was IMO genious I still can't believe this system hasn't be reproduce in modern gaming, it basically totally erase the problem of shitty IA controling our character that we have in so many game even today, I also enjoy the license board system and how diversify the weapon selection is, the battle system has really a lot more to offer than meet the eye, and it has the ball of being unique in the FF series. Meanwhile DQVIII has a very solid turn-base system, I also enjoy the skill point system, cause it allow diverse build for each character bumping the replay value, also the Tension mechanic was really fun to work around, it's very solid battle system so I enjoy both games on the gameplay aspect with the same amount.
Music wise I give this point to FFXII hands down, I like DQVIII's soundtrack (less than DQVII tough) but FFXII has one of my favorite soundtrack ever, their so much variety in it and despite that every music fit the place they played perfectly I never grew tired of the soundtrack while playing the game, unlike DQVIII where several theme are reuse and honnestly can become boring after a while, and it never felt out of place, and somehow they manage to make it even better on the Zodiac Age version (while the 3DS version of DQVIII took a hit down).
Story and Characters however DQVIII wins hands down while I love the world of Ivalice, enjoy the characters and appreciate the plot overall, it sadly feel rushed toward the end due to game development problem I think sadly the creator weren't able to make the story they wished for, while DQVIII doesn't feel incomplete or rush at all, as a good pacing overall and awesome main characters.
So YEAH as you can see choosing a better one is really hard to me I love this 2 games so much, however at the end of the day I'd say that if I had the choice between replaying FFXII and DQVIII I think I'd overall enjoy replaying XII more, so YEAH I give this point to FFXII.
DQIX (2009) VS FFXIII (2010) : That's a controversial one, I actually liked FFXIII cause I had a lot of fun with the battle system and think it's a lot better that everyone is giving it credit, however yeah some character were bad (looking at you Vanille), the villains were terrible, the story wasn't anything special and the game was linear as fuck, I however don't think the game is as bad as people makes it to be, as for DQIX it's your typical DQ with multiplayer element, I'd say I give this point to DQIX cause the game more enjoyable overall.
DQXI (2018) VS FFXV (2016-2018) : Alright I'm gonna put this simply. FFXV sucks !!! I hate this game, the story is a total wasted potential, the battle system is just a discount KH mix with some Type-0 element (with nowhere as much diversify as Type-0 was with it's 14 characters), the game is way to easy to the point of being insulting (if you die at this game then unless you were facing an extremely overlevel ennemy quite gaming, found another hobby that's for the best of you), the character are admitadly very good but they are in a story that don't exploit them, which suck cause I honnestly love the fuck out of the 4 main characters I think they are one of the best group in the franchise and the only reason I was able to finish this mess that is FFXV. FFXV is the very definition of "wasted potential" it seriously had everything to become a great game but miserably fail at almost everything and even worst make Square lose an incredible amount of time and money fuck this game.
OH Yeah DQXI great game basically everything I wait from a modern Dragon Quest, had a lot of fun playing through it, only downsides being the soundtrack which honnestly sucks and the Act 3 which wasn't great story wise, but if you can't tell by now it's the obvious winner.

I was really excited to play it because the story, characters, and NPCs seemed interesting, and I was excited about all of the job classes. Only to shut the game off because I hated how it forced you to play as nerfed mini characters and, even though you had all these job classes to choose from, it forced you to make parties of all the same class.

The DS remake is the most superior version of FF III. It’s kind of a slight reimagining, as all the characters now have names, distinct looks and personalities (in other words, actual characters). Some additional content adds story that gives each character a bit more purpose going through the main story. I beat the game and overall it’s a rough job system but still a fun one. And the game only makes you form whole-party class changes a handful of times, though I agree it gets super freaking annoying, even in the DS version.

Dragon Quest 3 is where the series started getting really good and introduced many things that became important to all RPG series like the job system, more interesting world themes, etc. Dragon Quest 4 is where you play characters in each chapter through there story and have all them join together at the later chapters. And Dragon Quest 5 has some of the most emotional story in the series, with choosing between wife and children they borrowed abilities from the parenthood and has an monster capture gimmick that borrows from Shin Megami Tensai from the Famicom and help inspired monster capture games that series like Pokemon & Dragon Quest Monster help popularized.

I think it would make more sense to compare Final Fantasy X to Dragon Quest 11, and then Final Fantasy XI to Dragon Quest X, as I'm not really sure how you compare an MMO to an offline RPG since they're really two entirely different genres. Comparing the games this way would undermine the structure of this battle royale, sure, but the battle was already ruined due to Dragon Quest X having no English version.
Other than that, I agreed with the choices for each battle where I'd completed both games (technically, I guess I have Final Fantasy III ahead of Dragon Quest III, since I finished the former but have stalled out against the latter). I haven't played Dragon Quests I, II, or X and have no opinions on them. I could see myself disagreeing on Final Fantasy I versus Dragon Quest I, as I really don't care much for the first Final Fantasy, but the decisions on each of the first three battles is justifiable, regardless. I think this type of battle puts Dragon Quest in a better light than I actually view the series, since if I compared my top five Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games to one another, Final Fantasy wins every battle (in fact, I like my third-favourite Final Fantasy game, FFIX, more than my top Dragon Quest game). But that's not to say that I'm not also a big fan of the Dragon Quest series, as I seriously love entries V, VIII, and XI; virtually no RPG franchise I've played can match what I consider to be peak Final Fantasy.
Also, what's up with the random Final Fantasy VII mod footage? I noticed that in another video, and here it's especially noticeable when so much of the footage is from the original versions of these games (I think Final Fantasy IX was the only other game that wasn't based on an original version, although it's at least from an official part, as far as I can tell).

Final Fantasy VIII a disaster?! It has some flaws, sure, but I think the stuff they did right outweighs the bad. I was completely blown away by this game when I played it for the first time. I absolutely LOVED the way this game looked. Everything looked so realistic but with just a hint of fantasy in the color palette used for a truly awesome effect, so kudos to the art director! The characters looked and moved like real people because they captured the motion from real people. This was quite a contrast from the cartoony Dragon Quest series (although I have nothing against the anime look). Final Fantasy VIII's soundtrack was epic as well, and I was blown away again when I heard sung vocals! The story was okay, but the overall "sorceress/sci-fi" theme it had going on was ultra cool, I thought. Yes, there are some issues with the game play, the junction system is a bit of a mess and a balancing act, and I didn't fully know what I was doing until my second play-through, but I think I was too blown away to care. I liked the characters in the game even if they all play the same. Squall was a badass, and Irvine was cool. I even liked Laguna. Flawed for sure, but I'd say it's a flawed and misunderstood masterpiece! I also liked Final Fantasy II for the most part. I appreciate what they were trying to do. This entry did manage to stuff in a lot of innovation over the first game, and chocobos and Cid were introduced! I'm not sure what they were thinking with the character development/building system on this one, but at least they tried to give each character a personality. Final Fantasy III is by far my favorite of the first three games. The graphics and sound are stunning for a NES game, and it plays a lot better than II. Dragon Quest III was a lot of fun as well, however, so this comparison is actually pretty close for me.

Great video. I am a huge Final Fantasy fan (especially older). Starting with Final Fantasy 1, I played and loved all the games released in the US until 8 (I tried so hard to like that game, but it was so bad). 9 and some of the rereleases were fun for me after, but then I stopped playing jrpgs as much. My only exposure to Dragon Quest was the first one that I got for free from Nintendo Power. I think I was turned off initially to Dragon Quest games because you couldn't see your party in action and I just ignored the series from there. I recently played Dragon Quest 11 and enjoyed it immensely (I agree Sylvando is the greatest). Because I had so much fun with that one, I decided to play 5 and 8 (consensus is they are best). While I am enjoying my playthroughs, I'm struck by the notion that the Dragon Quest games are more of the same, not that it is a bad thing but they feel very similar (albeit I'm only pulling a small sample size). Interestingly enough, Final Fantasy has the opposite problem, some of the changes seemed to be for the sake of change, with wildly differing results. Just my two cents.

Nothing beats FF6 to me. I remember faking illness to miss school so I could play. I still wish for a remake before anything else. I realize it may take more to make one, than 7 did, but square has the money. If I had that amount of money, I’d pay for it myself.
I’ve only played a few dragon quests. And they are SO great. The feeling I get going back to that style of rpg, is phenomenal. Last one I played was 11, when it first came out. I really want to play the old ones. Starting at the beginning of each trilogy. Like I want to play 5 & 6, but 4 is the beginning of that trilogy, so I refuse to play until I’ve beaten 4.
    You and I differ greatly on the best FF’s, and I love that. Mine are 6, 8, 10, 4, 11, 14, & 12.

FF8 was my first FF, and it blew my friggin mind! Played 7 after, and while i still loved it, it did not enchant me like 8 did.. so for me 8 will always be my favorite, since it was my first love of the genre.. 9 was honestly a let down for me at the time.. maby i should play it again? 🤔

      @ScotlandSlag 5 лет назад +1

You should ABSOLUTELY play 9 again. Especially with all of the enhanced versions out. I've played them all, and IX is still by far not just my favorite but one of the greatest JRPG's ever. It's more a throwback to the classic renaissance, steampunk, victorian styles in the older games. Every story is well told, every character has amazing back stories, and the music is also the best in the series, with tons of fun side quests to boot. I'll stop... hahaha

Dragon Quest. I was in 1st grade when the original came out. I needed my buddies dad to break it down for me. I was used to mindless Mario or Megaman. I had never seen anything like it before that time. Classic.

Kinda wish this comparison was made without the blatant bias against the MMO genre. Everything up until 8 I could agree with but once you started knocking down points for what (seemingly) felt like mmo dislike it was hard to take the verdicts of 9-11 seriously. Outside of that little nitpick I thought it was a very well done video and has me interested in quite a few other games.

Honestly you really need to take the date of release into account. It would've be better to compare Dragon Quest 2 to Final Fantasy 1 or better yet DQ1+2 vs FF1+2. As for the others I personally prefer to compare DQ3/FF3 and DQ6/FF5, since they have some things in common like class/job system. Other games is kinda hard to compare fairly.

Such an age old question lol. As a FF fan, I actually find DQ, more charming. The only thing dragging it down for me was Toriyama art style. I mean, it's a charming art style for sure, but I just hate the art style as a child. Growing up I'm able to appreciate such great personality Toriyama's art style has, which is sometimes lacking in many of the art style utilized in FF, even tho it's the prettier style.
But yeah, the recent downfall of FF is giving me so much appreciation for DQ on how it stays with its roots and improve upon it. DQ11 was a really amazing game. I was a bit skeptical at first, but turned out it's able to scratch many of the itch I had desired from recent FF games.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Final Fantasy 9, while it may be cheesy to say this but, I was an awkward middle schooler at the time, and this game really shaped me into the person I am today. Apart from that, DQ7, DQ8, DQ11,FF6, and FF7 are all in my favorite games list. Although, I will say Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is giving all of these a run for their money, I couldn’t get into it at first, but now, 2 years later I’m in love with it. It has everything that made classic JRPGS great, so much love poured into it, not unlike FF9.

My perspectives aren't from their original NES versions but from the best I could have at the time, which were DQ1 on Switch and FF1 on 3DS. After beating FF1 recently I couldn't stop thinking about how much more fun I had from the compact experience that I had playing DQ1.
My first playthrough of DQ1 were basically "I can't believe they'll allow me to finish the game while carrying the princess on my arms, instead of leaving her at the castle after saving her"LOL

Really like the idea, but I think it'd be smarter to gauge them on release date instead, since comparing an MMO Final Fantasy made in 2002 to a Dragon Quest made 15 years earlier seems pretty poor of an idea. If you compared DQ 7 and Final Fantasy 9 you'd get a better picture of the type of games and differences they had since they were released just a month apart. While also being able to show the improvements/implementations final fantasy went through during these break periods while DQ didn't release anything allowing you to show the full scope of Final Fantasy's series from 1-15 while also showing DQ1-12. By using a much more definitive method

While I don't think anyone can deny the quality if both dq8 and dq11, the series just hasn't been anywhere as consistent as final fantasy, just look at all the high quality releases, ff4, ff6, ff7, ff8, ff9, ff10, ff12za, ff14 and ff16 are all amazing high quality titles, while I definitely preferred dq11 over ff15, the combat system off ff16 is just absolutely amazing and while I wish there were more RPG progression mechanics nobody can deny the amazing combat, story and characters, imagine if every summon in ff16 had its own complex path of exile style skill tree, maybe even a unique weapon type for each summon and countless weapons and armor that change the way your character looks, and of course parry members, at least 8, that way we can go back to the four member battle parties that can be switched our anytime like in ff10 but in an action JRPG more akin to tales of arise or star ocean the divine force, maybe, that's why for selfish reasons I want sony to buy both square Enix and Bandai Namco, just imagine what they could do with all that talent under one roof

This is one of my favourite videos from you. I'm having a tough time figuring out where to jump in with Dragon Quest since there are so many ports and versions. With Final Fantasy, it's easy: all the modern mobile "remasters" of Final Fantasy are ugly mangled garbage, where as Dragon Quest just keeps getting more beautiful.

I agreed with every single one of these! I was worried you'd pick FFV over DQV but I'm glad you made the right choice. DQ is more consistent, but FF definitely hits the highest highs. Also i like where DQ is going whereas i haven't liked where FF is. I'll give 16 a try, and i may like it as an action RPG, just not sure if I'll feel like FF to me. DQ11 still feels like DQ.
