I edited it a couple years ago after I played DQV (since the only art of him is if you marry Bianca) and uploaded it to the wiki, I never would have expected it to pop up here!
Man, watching the hero’s dad get beaten to death really hit me hard because I happened to play the game shortly after my own dad died. And then the game helped me put things into perspective once I got to the part where the hero was a grownup with children and still on a quest to avenge his father. This game is a real work of art to me.
I’ve never played this one but i watched the movie adaption on Netflix and my reactions to how fast everything happens was the same as yours. Imagine all this happening in a two hour movie 😂
I've said this before, but Johnny, you're pretty lucky to get a physical copy lent to you. They go for hundreds on eBay. This is why emulators exist. Edit: Yes, I know there is a mobile version which is much cheaper but I mean the DS version specifically.

@@roslynnerentas8939 amazing, I really enjoyed this game. Beside that's tho the game is fantastic and I wholeheartedly recommend it! 👍
DQV is such an amazing and unique game in the series. One of my favorites. The interesting and dynamic dialog system and the plotline (with heavy emphesis on the family) is truly unique among the other games, not only in the series, but RPGs in general.
I love the fact that Bianca tries to kiss the MC in her confusion and he just brushes her off, regardless of whether you are married and have kids or not lol

@@dungeonmaster3464 What's that gotta to do with anything? Johnny for the longest time said that he would review FF before DQ, so it's a bit surprising/amusing that he ended up doing DQ first.
I got so god damn happy when I heard the talk about a potential SMT or Persona marathon. It’s my favorite game franchise ever, and helped me re-realize a lot of things in my life that I either simply forgot or just didn’t know (like getting back into singing, being able to appreciate voice acting and stories in games the way I do now etc) I’d love to see this, please do it Johnny, if not after the FF Marathon, then I shall wait until it arrives, I can’t wait!
Debora is best DQV Waifu. Also, can I gush for a bit? I absolutely love Pankraz's death in this game. In the first battle against Ladja's subordinates, he completly wipes the floor with them, showing how strong he is on the offense (mind you, one of these enemies is a mid-game boss while the other is a late-game boss). Then, in the second fight where Pankraz is forced to lose, it does not become a curb-stomp battle for the two bosses. It takes them multiple turns to actually put down Pankraz. This shows that Pankraz is, well, not a glass cannon, and could go through multiple battles with no sweat. He is both strong on the offensive AND the defensive. Those two moments help give Pankraz a very awesome way to go, by showing just how strong and overpowered he actually is. It one of my favorite moments in the game. Another moment I like is during the dance at the end of the game. If you married Nera or Bianca, your character is the one leading the dance. However, if you married Debora, SHE'S the one leading the dance, twirling you around while the other dancers twirls their female partner. A very funny way of showing who is actually wearing the pants in this relationship.
What I like about DQ series is the story much lighter and easier to enjoy. I love darker, heavier stories with lots of intrigues and twists but light-hearted stories from time to time is much welcomed
This is honestly one of my favorite handheld RPGs of all time, such a great story with a cast that you really connect with. The party chat being done through the simple press of a button makes it so easy to hear what all your companions have to say, and they generally have a reaction to every single place and NPC in the entire game, which is insane to me.
@@Mario9919DX I mean if it's the first one in the series and its an old NES game with barely any story. DQ11 does a better job introducing players to the series.
DQ11 is an fantastic starting point to those who never played an series or an RPG game in general that can easily get into too. It's simple, straightforward & lighthearted, yet pretty challenging, strategic & has some serious moments. If your looking to start your RPG experience, DQ11 is one of them.
I like this sort of impressionary take to the Johnny Vs formula. I can't quite put my finger on why but this video feels a little different to the other recent ones. It's charming Also little asside: I can't believe I forgot there was a boss in this game called King Krool.
@@lukaabramovic3227 That's the theme naming for the Order of Zugzwang in general. I believe Grand Master Nimzo is named for a (Russian) Chess champion player, and the Minions are named for their piece in English and Russian (King Korol, Bishop Ladja, etc) The order itself I believe is even named for a Chess reference. Zugzwang refers to a situation where a player must make a move that will put them at a disadvantage (to the point that not moving would be optimal if allowed)
@@papershadow That's true. Although bishop ladja and slon the rook got their names mixed up. Ladja (ладья) is the russian name for rook and slon (слон) is bishop.

I personally love the Party Chat feature because it lets you see so much interaction and characterization you might otherwise miss. It reminds me of Fire Emblem’s supports, albeit not as good. And I do totally wish we’d get some Mother remakes with something similar, since it’d provide much more characterization for the PCs after they join the party.
Wow, Johnny is starting on my favorite game in the series! 😊 Welcome to DQ my man and I ain't talmbout dairy queen. A lot of the things you criticize by the way, are actually series staples. These things do improve overall, however get used to some things being here to stay, including saving at churches (which beats only being able to save by talking to local kings) and late game difficulty ramp ups. But still you are now in the world of JRPG comfort food. I wish you happiness and luck with your Dragon Quest experience 💖😁
I've recently started collecting DS games as it was a big part of my childhood and maybe even my favourite system ever, and this was one of the first games on my list to get. Too bad this is one of the hardest DS games to get because it's so rare and expensive. I had to settle for IV and IX instead, which are still pretty good though.
There's a big amount of great DS games that unfortunately sold rather poorly, meaning it's pretty hard to find copies for reasonable prices. In fact, i have several DS games that have gone up in price since i bought them.
@@okagron Too true, I believe the PSP (the JRPG machine) also suffered from similar issues with having great games that didn't sell that well and thus were never ported to newer plaforms.
I got REALLY lucky finding the game Used when I was in High School. I think it was on a Used shelf with IV (which is significantly less rare on DS), so I had no real way to know its rarity Really glad I got it, as it's one of my favorite JRPGs of all time, and also prompted me to grab DQ6 when new (which I've heard is becoming similarly hard to find now).
20:25 Saving at churches is pretty much a series staple and I can tell you from my experience with 8 and 11 that it hasn't changed one bit from here, you can't even skip the text all that fast either. I think in 11 you can quick save without turning the game off but otherwise the same rules still apply.
That’s really discouraging to me. I’ve never played a game in the series but the way he described saving in 5 is an absolute nightmare, especially for someone like me when I save pretty much every moment I get a chance to.
@@joaonitro5149 I probably am too, and not just from FF. The vast majority of games don't have saving systems that are this limited lol. Only being able to save at a church and having to go far out of your way for that sounds like it would be very frustrating for me. I'd constantly be paranoid about losing hours of progress if my DS were to lose battery power or something.
@@Road_to_Dawn Unlike FF, when you die, you're not forced to reload your save, but instead you only lose half of your money and have to resuscitate your companions. DQ isn't a game where you save constantly, it's a game where you pick it up, play it, save and stop playing.
@@joaonitro5149 Yes, but what about hardware failure? If my game resets, I'll still have to reload my file from back when I saved at the church, right?
Nice to hear you liked it! Dragon Quest V's one of the more beloved of the series, and for good reason I feel. It's a lot more of a personal journey for your main character compared to most of the others in the game, which helps it stand out a lot more from the rest. Also yeah I'm basic too and chose Bianca as well so no worries there!
So a little note about the talk command. It didn't exist in the SNES original, it was added to later releases of the game and you're right it adds so much to this. (and 4 and 6)
If anyone is interested in getting into the Dragon Quest series after watching this video, I can confirm that Dragon Quest XI S is an excellent starting point for newcomers. It was my first DQ game and I had no problem at all getting into it. It's also out on all major platforms now (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and even the Switch (the version I played)). It's a long game though, so if you do decide to play it then be prepared for a massive time sink.
Get the mobile version. It's literally the same game, just for your phone. It controls well and looks really good. It's much better than some would have you believe.
Funnily enough, hearing that Johnny was gonna review 5 made me play my copy again, and I finished it today. Debora is actually the best of the three in my opinion, if only because her character is actually really freaking great. But it’s good to see that John had fun with this entry. Puts a smile to my face.
This video reminded me that I have the demo of DQ 11 collecting digital dust on my switch. Now is a good time to try this series out. Great video as always Johnny, thanks.
I have this game and I STILL haven't beaten it lol. What's funny is that there's a LOT of talk lines in the game that they had to translate but I'll take the characters having some kind of development through the talk feature than none at all.
I've only played Dragon Quest IX. Yes, the "turn the power off after quick saving" thing is still a thing. (UPDATE): I have now played XI. It got rid of that. I’m not sure if X had it but yknow....glad to see it went away sometime.
Ok... This game is basically the BEST at storytelling. When I played it, it took me to a different world. I'm confident there's no RPG or game in general that is better at storytelling, worldbuilding, and IMMERSION. It makes you feel like a kid in the kid section, it makes you feel like a grown (albeit scarred) adult in the adult section, and best of all, in the end, it makes you feel like you truly lived in the world of the protagonist, felt his emotions, and lived his life.
Show starts at 1:21. On that note, only Arin "Egoraptor" Hanson will belittle an important site like Skill Share by being as creepy as possible, making you wonder why he still has friends.
One of the tricks I do, and it is sort of annoying, is always buying a shit ton of medicinal herbs and using those to preserve MP. That saved me so much on that final dungeon. Great vid Johnny!
I never expected to see a clip of bald Tom Cruise dancing in Tropic Thunder on this channel. I’ve never played a Dragon Quest game before, so I appreciate getting a close look at DQ5. That said, what is this story?! This is absolutely FILLED with stuff I’d never consider the possibility of seeing in a fantasy game. Fantasy books, sure, like check out Wizard’s First Rule; shit gets crazy in that book, it’s amazing. But like, spending 10 years as a slave? 8 more with both you and your wife turned to stone?! Idk if I’ll ever play this myself but this is awesome to hear about lol. Also, about the whole talking with party members for the story thing, that’s actually one of the things I really love about the Tales series. Most of the enjoyment I get from these games is just seeing the characters interacting in the hundreds of optional skits, which I feel really build the story and help ground the characters.
There are some great ways to play this game if you don't care for a physical copy. I highly recommend it as it really is that good in many of these areas, especially if you like retro RPGs. Emulation and mobile ports are available and local stores sometimes have hidden gems like this. This is easily one of my favorite games and I can't recommend it enough.
As cliche as it sounds, seeing Johnny play some DQ out of the blue is a surprise to be sure but a welcome one. Some trivial: DQ has such a massive cultural impact in Japan that it's borderline a religion over there and one of the most infamous examples of this was a bizarre case of a businessman who was arrested for attempting to murder his friend over an argument of which was the best DQ game (I'm legit not making this up).

Ted can be a happy camper tonight
Who is Ted? I’m slipping in my Johnny Cinematic Universe knowledge!
@@AlexRN I'm pretty sure Johnny mentioned him in this video. He's Johnny's co-commentator on the other channel "Brain Scratch Commentary".
He was also in Johnny's Pokemon Gen 2 and Pokemon Gen 5 (part 2) reviews.
@@dungeonmaster3464 like I said, I’m definitely slacking in on the Johnny Cinematic Universe.
You pick Bianca if you want Super Saiyans, you pick Deborah if you want vanilla Saiyans, you pick Nera if you want Evolved Super Saiyan Blues.
This game made me think as a person rather than a gamer at times. I see that as a testament of the game quality.
10:16 I'm very shocked to see my Flora's son blue hair edit in a video like this, especially from a RUclipsr that I've been watching for so many years!
Damn
I’ve never played this one but i watched the movie adaption on Netflix and my reactions to how fast everything happens was the same as yours. Imagine all this happening in a two hour movie 😂
I watched the film one day while I was quite sick and it really helped me pull through.
This series deserves more love in the west
I've said this before, but Johnny, you're pretty lucky to get a physical copy lent to you. They go for hundreds on eBay. This is why emulators exist.
Edit: Yes, I know there is a mobile version which is much cheaper but I mean the DS version specifically.
That being said, the mobile version is a great alternative to playing that version.
This may be my route
*"This is why emulators exist."*
Can't tell Nintendo that. The selfish, stingy bastards that they are.
I was super lucky and got the game a couple years back when it was still only retail on Amazon (I bought the US version in the UK yay for no region locking) it was £40 and now I see it go for £100+.
Laughs in Flashcarts
My favourite Dragon Quest game. So many good memories
I personally prefer games like IV and XI over it, but V is still a great game!
I'm SO glad that Johnny had the same issue with saving as I did.
Literally just completed this game today for the first time 😂
@@roslynnerentas8939 It's hailed as one of the best in the series.
@@roslynnerentas8939 amazing, I really enjoyed this game. The story kept me guessing as I had no clue what was going to happen next, it made me laugh and nearly cry, only thing I felt was the random encounters were a bit overwhelming, like too many, I understand why because you gotta level your party including monsters but I wish they toned it down a little. Beside that's tho the game is fantastic and I wholeheartedly recommend it! 👍
Huh
Weird! Me too
@@johnnyfkingsilverhand7120 what did you think?
DQV is such an amazing and unique game in the series. One of my favorites. The interesting and dynamic dialog system and the plotline (with heavy emphesis on the family) is truly unique among the other games, not only in the series, but RPGs in general.
I love the fact that Bianca tries to kiss the MC in her confusion and he just brushes her off, regardless of whether you are married and have kids or not lol
There’s a time and place for everything, and being attacked by a killer tomato is not the time to start getting your freak on.
Johnny: please tell me this is the last game that makes you save this way.

The best part is that it's literally called a Rotten Apple.
Maybe that's why his progression stopped. He was trying to be something he's not for Johnny.
He actually did it... He reviewed Dragon Quest before Final Fantasy... What parallel universe have we entered into?
The universe where he needed more time before starting a whole RPG marathon.
It’s my favorite game franchise ever, and helped me re-realize a lot of things in my life that I either simply forgot or just didn’t know (like getting back into singing, being able to appreciate voice acting and stories in games the way I do now etc)
I’d love to see this, please do it Johnny, if not after the FF Marathon, then I shall wait until it arrives, I can’t wait!
If the talk command is fleshed out in DQ11 as much as it is in this game, then I REALLY missed a bunch of text from my party members.
What I like about DQ series is the story much lighter and easier to enjoy. I love darker, heavier stories with lots of intrigues and twists but light-hearted stories from time to time is much welcomed
that party chat bit got me thinking hes gonna either hate 4 or suffer the mobile version
This is honestly one of my favorite handheld RPGs of all time, such a great story with a cast that you really connect with. The party chat being done through the simple press of a button makes it so easy to hear what all your companions have to say, and they generally have a reaction to every single place and NPC in the entire game, which is insane to me.
This game is probably in my top 10 games, glad you enjoyed it

@@Mario9919DX really shouldn't it's a great series.
@@christianlopez707 Not when I tried to watch those live streams of Dragon Warrior. When a game puts me to sleep that's an extremely bad sign.
@@Mario9919DX I mean if it's the first one in the series and its an old NES game with barely any story. DQ11 does a better job introducing players to the series.
The first DQ I played was Echoes of an Elusive Age. Even being 25 years late to the series, I gotta say: brilliant game. So so so good.
My first DQ game was actually DQ9. Though I didnt fully get into the series with DQ11.
Nice! Hopefully you have experienced the rest of the series. 11 is a great start to the series.
DQ11 is an fantastic starting point to those who never played an series or an RPG game in general that can easily get into too. It's simple, straightforward & lighthearted, yet pretty challenging, strategic & has some serious moments. If your looking to start your RPG experience, DQ11 is one of them.
I love how u can talk to your companions after anything that happens. Plus driving a castle around is awesome.
Something to note when you do FF1. Without Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy wouldn't exist and Square would've be gone from bankruptcy.
I like this sort of impressionary take to the Johnny Vs formula. I can't quite put my finger on why but this video feels a little different to the other recent ones. It's charming
Also little asside:
I can't believe I forgot there was a boss in this game called King Krool.
His name is actually King Korol, which is funny in its own right, since Korol means King in russian, so his name is basically King King
@@lukaabramovic3227 That's the theme naming for the Order of Zugzwang in general. I believe Grand Master Nimzo is named for a (Russian) Chess champion player, and the Minions are named for their piece in English and Russian (King Korol, Bishop Ladja, etc)
The order itself I believe is even named for a Chess reference.

Ahh man that classic attire is so nostalgic
God damn Johnny. I could listen to you read a shopping list, and have a heart-warming smile. Your narration is so lovely
Johnnnnnyyyy, get that Patreon going, you deserve the support, man!
I imagined my character as being a hothead and snarky fellow, which therefore justified him pairing up with Debora, the two of them proceed to smack talk everything
Loving that Filia poster in the background
Can't wait for 2028 when John finally looks at Fire Emblem.
2036: Johnny vs. Xenoblade Chronicles
Or you can get it on your phone for like 7$.
VI is harder to get due to its short run. Luckily I bought it when it was new
I got REALLY lucky finding the game Used when I was in High School. I think it was on a Used shelf with IV (which is significantly less rare on DS), so I had no real way to know its rarity
Really glad I got it, as it's one of my favorite JRPGs of all time, and also prompted me to grab DQ6 when new (which I've heard is becoming similarly hard to find now).
Johnny wearing a black hoodie...*NOSTALGIA*
Holy sh!t, he's doing Dragon Quest!? Gonna watch!
This is a welcome surprise! DQ5 is one of my favorite RPG’s of all time. I’d love to see it get a modern remake someday!
Dragon Quest. The series of grinding.
Johnny saying he plans to do youtube for a long time just warms my heart. Don't even care about RPGs, I just love this man
20:25 Saving at churches is pretty much a series staple and I can tell you from my experience with 8 and 11 that it hasn't changed one bit from here, you can't even skip the text all that fast either. I think in 11 you can quick save without turning the game off but otherwise the same rules still apply.
That’s really discouraging to me. I’ve never played a game in the series but the way he described saving in 5 is an absolute nightmare, especially for someone like me when I save pretty much every moment I get a chance to.
@@Road_to_Dawn I never had any problems with saving in this game. I think he's just to accustomed with FF.
More of the Reason I went with Bianca! Because the Kids are Born as Super Saiyans and that the Hill I'm Dying on! LMAO
(and 4 and 6)
Johnny: *Mentions a persona marathon*
Me: Very well, I will go along with this
If anyone is interested in getting into the Dragon Quest series after watching this video, I can confirm that Dragon Quest XI S is an excellent starting point for newcomers. It was my first DQ game and I had no problem at all getting into it. It's also out on all major platforms now (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and even the Switch (the version I played)). It's a long game though, so if you do decide to play it then be prepared for a massive time sink.
I really want to buy and play this game so badly, since I'm a huge fan of the Dragon Quest series, but it's too darn expensive on ebay..
I'm sure SE will eventually port the Zenithia trilogy to modern platforms eventually, just like they did with the Erdrick trilogy.
@@linguicaguy Hopefully they do.
Get the mobile version. It's literally the same game, just for your phone. It controls well and looks really good. It's much better than some would have you believe.
Yeah I was in your position until I decided to buy a flash cart, micro sd card and just downloaded the rom, much cheaper
@UC13U0rYa4JtgfnsH35xo7dA The mobile port is okay. It's not as bad as the FF V& VI remakes.

PERSONA 4 VIDEO CONFIRMED, TEDDIE GANG LET'S GOOO
Funnily enough, hearing that Johnny was gonna review 5 made me play my copy again, and I finished it today.
Debora is actually the best of the three in my opinion, if only because her character is actually really freaking great. But it’s good to see that John had fun with this entry. Puts a smile to my face.
I'm simply glad you started with one of the best of the Dragon Quest series.
This video reminded me that I have the demo of DQ 11 collecting digital dust on my switch. Now is a good time to try this series out. Great video as always Johnny, thanks.
“If you marry Bianca, your kids are born Super Saiyan.”
But…. Wouldn’t Nera mean they’re Super Saiyan Blue?…
I have yet to find a game that matches this experience, really great on so many levels
@@nathanieljamal3836 I KNOW
Dude, I played this game like a whole decade ago and it solidified my love for RPG's. So glad Johnny's doing a Vs. on it
Show starts at 1:21.
You said you wouldn't do Dragon Quest before Final Fantasy, but here we are.
Looking at my notification pop up & see Johnny doing a video on my favorite Dragon Quest game? Nice!
Personally hope Johnny takes a look at Shin Megami Tensei, especially considering Shin Megami Tensei V is supposed to come out later this year.
I love Debora she's my favorite of the wives, she too grows as a character in the game and I like her dialogue with the kids especially the daughter.
Debora is good for Metal Slime farming because her exclusive weapons have a double hit mechanic
Hey Johnny, do you plan on getting around to playing the other Souls games anytime soon since Demon’s Souls is now out?
You have some fun times ahead with this series! It is very consistent and keeps is identity, but it isn't afraid to be something else either.
Also the rumour of Dragon Quest games never being allowed to release on a workday because then their productivity would go down.
....really...?
This video was the reason I picked up DQXI and I am endlessly grateful and entertained.
