Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition: The Kotaku Review (S)

- I (Tim Rogers) supplement my 2018 video review of the 2017 game Dragon Quest XI with this in-depth look at its 2019 "definitive" edition for the Nintendo Switch. In summary, this is the best way to experience Dragon Quest XI.
Wow, the developers of Dragon Quest must believe that the "definition" of Dragon Quest is portability! (That's a joke about the resolution) Игры

Guys, I get the feeling that he likes Dragon Quest 11.
What gave it away?
You are WRONG. He likes playing Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Past Definitive Edition for the Nintendo Switch.
Nah, don't think so. He would have mentioned that.
Not sure I picked up on that, think I need to watch the video 30 more times to be sure. 👍
What the hell gave you that idea?
As soon as Tim said “hello,” I knew this was going to be a good supplemental critique of this version’s additions and differences.
"please be tim please be tim"
"...HELLO, I'm TIM ROGERS"
YES
me in every kotaku review haha
He is both completely serious and exquisitely sarcastic in every breath. It's like he is a doing a parody of a person doing a parody of himself. His voice inflictions are contagious. I would listen to him talk about anything; boat commercials, infomercials about things that both slice and dice, for all eternity. I don't even own a switch right now since it was stolen and I watched the who thing.
mujiha literally the only reason I clicked! Already own the game and loved his original review 😂
I decided to wait to buy this version because of his first review. This 2nd review is the icing on the cake. LOOK AT THAT CAKE!

Wow, I wanted to play Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition, but it seems like there were so many positive changes from the playstation version to this, the Switch game Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition that it seems impossible to miss this time around. It's encouraging to hear that you like Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition so much. I'm thinking about playing it (i.e. Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition) myself!
I definitely plan on buying Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition and playing through it at least one time. The basic version of Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition, Dragon Quest 11, is one of the absolute best games to come out of this generation, and it seems like Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition is the best version to play.
The only thing bigger than the release itself, is Tim's review!!!!
grapes9h5 Only 6 or so hours till release here and I have just enough time to watch this video. His videos are the best.
Totally saw it, knew it was going to be Tim, and clicked faster than anything ever. And I hate Kotaku!

"literally 300 hours !!"
I wish that through this fantastic video, DQ series become more famos for all over the world !!
DQ11 is one of the greatest games I’ve ever played. Can’t wait for DQ3 remake
Indeed. This might be the best rpg of all time
Tim Rogers is from this moment my favourite member of Kotaku, and he probably made me buy the game in the first 2 minutes of the video.
I hereby declare Tim Rogers as definitely the only relevant video game influencer.
You're right I DO like your voice, and I WILL be visiting your house since I will be owning Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Past Definitive Edition for the Nintendo Switch.
I bought the game. I'm coming to your house now, Tim Rogers!
We should car pool!
He mentioned he lives in some neighbourhood near downtown Brooklyn. Driving in NYC is ridiculous, so you should probably take the F train (or whatever) instead. :)
I lived in NYC until earlier this year and hadn’t even heard of Tim Rogers until a few months ago.
I need this guy to review every game that I want to know about. These two Dragon Quest XI reviews are the greatest reviews in the history of reviews.
This is my favorite re-review of 2019.

Tim I’ve watched your original DQ11 over 20 times since discovering it a month ago.
That's probably more than 11 hours.
Tough Guy Gaming i find myself rewatching it too just for the sheer entertainment value
I’ve watched it at least 5 times
I've shown it to at least five other friends, who had no idea about dragon quest, just for the sheer entertainment factor of it
It's one of the only review videos I have ever rewatched. Fantastic stuff.
When you said "don't know how to google" my phone voice activated Google Assistant and looked up the word dragon
Nice
"You do not need to play any of the first ten Dragon Quests in order to enjoy Dragon Quest XI."
Well, sweet Timothy, that is exactly what I did after your last video review of Dragon Quest XI. You gushed and gushed about the series and made me want to play XI, but I am a broken person who cannot play a game without playing all of its prequels, so I played Dragon Quest 1. Then 2, 3, 4, etc. All the way up to 9, and skipped 10 because I had to, and then XI. Your video got me to play every Dragon Quest over the course of like eight months.
And they were great.
HELL yea dude. I made the same journey (playing like 7 dragon quest games in a shockingly short amount of time, also in order) when I was finishing high school and starting college and it changed the way i see videogames
he got me to play 1 and part way through 2
@@Micolash_is_behind_you hey, just thought i'd let you know that 2 is like, by FAR the worst one! it's got some huge problems. so it makes sense you didn't get through it! but if you liked 1 enough to try 2, then you GOTTA play 3. cuz it's amazing

Thanks for doing another lengthy, in depth, love letter of a review for the definitive edition, Tim! Keep up the great work. 😎
Welcome back, Tim! We love you! One time you played videoball with me and a friend of mine for a VERY long time at a pax and you were very nice and we had a great time! My point is, you’re awesome. Proceed.
Tim: Talking about the controversy behind DQ11's midi music
Me: Man..this guy is killing literally everything on a horse for 5mins straight. Such a quality review
Tim forgot to mention another difference the Definitive Edition has. This time punting enemies with your horse DOES give you EXP (a tiny insignificant amount but something nonetheless) as opposed to the zero EXP the vanilla DQXI versión gave on PS4 and PC. Just felt like pointing that out :)
AlexRN now he has to remake the video goshdarnit!
Incredible work done here. Tons of love and time put into this review. Thank you for the very in-depth and spoiler free analysis.
For sure! I didn't feel as though he spoiled anything, and that that was quite the accomplishment. Not an easy feat!

Tim is awesome. This is one of my favorite "reviews" ever. So smartly written and entertaining.
"The 2D mode is nice, even though it's weird"

EXACTLY THIS
A 16 bit 100 hour JRPG? A gaming "journalist" that actually seems to like gaming? What year is this!?
Gaming journalists bitch about old school JRPGs, Random encounters and turn based combat. Then games like DQ11 and Persona 5 come around and everyone loses their mind at how great this old school rpg, with random (semi random at least) encounters and turn based combat are. It's like everyone wants their games to be action rpgs until they get reminded of how great a real JRPG can be.
That's because Tim Rogers isn't a game journalist, he's a professional video game analyst.
Justin Carpenter lol no other reviewers liked this game nearly this much though
Gaming journalists do like video games. If they didn't, why would they work in a low paying job where they have beat games in a week?
@@justinc882 It's because those games are great despite the outdated and bad mechanics.
I love how painfully exhaustive his language is. 😆
You are rarely in danger of not knowing exactly what he thinks lol
He just doesn't know how to get to the point
It's equally genius and idiotic. I love listening to him.
I usually abhor verbosity, but this? THIS IS THE ONLY EXCEPTION AND IT IS AWESOME
@@vsanz4758 Ya missed the point
I love the dry humor of your reviews, I hope I can find more Kotaku reviews you do. Not only did your review sell me on DQXI for PS4, you convinced me to double dip and also get it for Switch. At about 65 hours on Switch and I’m already considering replaying in 2D mode once I beat it
TIM! Welcome back. I've missed you horribly!
Same here. I was like, heck, is he on vacation or something?
@@jonhunthrop1882 He mentioned a bunch of times in some of his stream recordings that he was going to japan for the Tokyo Game Show and maybe some other stuff. Hopefully we'll get some sweet new videos from him about that soon!
Ok I think I remember that now.
Most anticipated "review" of 2019..Tim rogers.. Im only here to hear the man speak. Hope you review DQ 1/2/3
I got it on my pc because of your videos. I've watched all of them. I immediately got the switch version for my girlfriend when she told me she had never played a real rpg. Last night, 7 and a half hours into her playthrough, I heard her yell "YEAH MAN IM GONNA RANSACK YOUR HOUSE!". I shed a single tear. Thank you Tim Rogers.
This is beautiful
I had nine shirts to iron, and I chose the new Tim Rogers Dragon Quest video over every other RUclips video, podcast, and NFL football. Listening to your voice talk about this game is as pleasurable and relaxing as playing this game. Thank you for doing it!
Tim, please continue being the best reviewer/editor ever. your style is amazing and I look forward to your stuff!
It's good to have you back, Tim! Did not expect to hear this much Grieg in a Dragon Quest video, though - but even that rinkydink piano arrangement of "Hall of the Mountain King" is, arguably, better than most of the new music Sugiyama wrote for DQXI.
Every time he says Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition take a shot
Great. Now I'm dead and cant play the game.
Massively drunk before noon, thanks 😬

One of my most anticipated games in 2019. It's a must-have for Switch owners.
“This video isn’t a review”, it’s a goddamn masterpiece
Sometimes I watch this review again when I have anxiety. Thank you.
Thank you Tim, for your tireless dedication to giving us all the low-down on Dragon Quest XI S: Echos of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition, as well as its less-than-definitive predecessors.
Hey Tim: This is going to sound weird but can you review the switch versions of 1,2, and 3? Together is fine. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the prior games.

Glad you’re back !
Hi Tim, I wanted to hop in and say that you single-handedly convinced me to play Dragon Quest XI for PlayStation 4 last year, and it was my second favorite video game *of* that year! (Also, my most favorite video game of that year was Celeste, which was also a game your videos convinced me to play.) I got the platinum trophy in the PS4 version of DQ11, and all the changes to this version seem really neat and I would probably really enjoy playing it! Unfortunately, I am *extremely enamored* by the way this game looked in 4K on the PS4, and every time I see the Switch version I really do wish they would just release the S version as DLC on a 4K platform. Hopefully that happens! I would buy and play that without hesitation.

I love hearing this guy! ;D And I finally got this version for Christmas so when I saw he had another one after re-watching the first one. And breaking every pot I saw. Clicking every red book like instructed. I couldn't help but ease into my reclining chair and prepare for epic. Thanks again.
I've never bought a game half way through a review, but damn
I've always loved Dragon Quest and your videos make me love it even more. You are a credit to the Dragon Quest community!
I'm new to the series but man you sold me on it! This video is hilarious and informative all in one. You got my sub and definitely cant wait to get the game. ✌🏾
I've been feverishly laying on my bathroom floor for 2 weeks. I thought I was sick but no, I'm withdrawling from tim Rogers content. The euphoria is swimming behind my eyes. Thank you.
Tim. I can't find any information about the new story chapters. The previews talked about new playable segments where each party member became the protagonist and filled in some story gaps. What's the down low on that?
Your review of the original release got me to dip my toes into DQ for the first time. Thank you! I loved it so much.
Tim: If it is, at all, any consolation your original 2018 review of Dragon Quest XI:. Echoes of an Elusive Age got me to purchase and play the game upon its immediate release. Today, I love this series and have repurchased the game for the Nintendo Switch.
I love that this re-review has come out a year after the original review.

This is literally the best video on the internet! Thanks for sharing your love of the series with us Tim! Sharing something you love so personally with so many people is awesome.
Bought the game based on your recommendation, Tim. Just finished it. You're 100% right about everything. To the point where I have to assume you stole all this content from my brain. Yesterday. And then emailed it back to yourself in the past so you could post these videos months and years ago. Nice work!
I don't normally watch videos over 20 minutes, but when I do, it's a Tim Rogers review.
I subscribed (finally) for Tim Rogers. One of the best reviewers hands down.
The internet is finally ready for Tim Rogers.
Yes another Tim Rogers review
Tim Rogers kept me entertained watching back to back 30 min Dragon Quest reviews, and made me lol. Totally got me on the music bit. Appreciate the review style, another game sold.
This is just the video I was looking for!!! Not a review, (I already know the game is near perfect) but a comparison of the "Definitive Edition" versus the original!!!! I'm hoping to get a Switch by the end of next month, and while I need Monster Hunter and Crash Racing first, I'm already adding this game to my "must have" list!!!
And I love your script writing and sassy tone of voice!!! Made the video even better!!!
Tim, I beg you, please review every Dragon Quest!!!
ApexCactus I second this!!!
I am so glad I bought the Switch version. It was one hell of a great time and I am rewatching this review again because it is that awesome!
Great video Tim, your previous review of the PS4 version convinced me to buy it and it’s now among my favorite RPGs of all time!
These reviews made me both play and buy for the steam release!
Tim Rogers, my children and their children will honour the day you informed me of this series!
I love how when showing off the Japanese voice acting the monster speaks and then Erik replies with “What are you guys saying?” in Japanese. I don’t know if you intentionally did this and not many people would get it, but I think it’s hilarious.
Edit: 6:55
Flaffy Tim Rogers never does anything not intentionally. He clearly speaks Japanese and is sort of a DQ scholar, I’m sure he knew what he was doing.
Sounds like itsuki tbh
You got me, this game's "hangoutitude" is extremely appealing
Had to watch both reviews, so much care into them

God I love this review (and the previous one) Played both versions of DQ11 but for some reason still want to watch you'r ridiculously exhaustive review. Thats how much I love this game.. and your reviews.

You've convinced me. Just downloaded on my Switch.
I think I've seen your original DQXI review more times than there are minutes in it, and I've got to say-I sure am glad I did just so I could catch the various the callbacks and allusions to it in this video (and even the Dragon Quest Builders 2 video).
Thank you dragon quest man. You were the catalyst for me buying XI as my first game in the series and now here i am, about to buy it again while listening to you talk about it while I play Dragon Quest I on my other screen.
Guess I'm playing this for another 100 hours!
You mean the video, don't you?
absolutely
Mr. JoJo Sweet I’ll take that into account thanks
Mr. JoJo do you normally tell strangers to go to the gym in JRPG review videos?
Currently playing in 3D. Just knowing it has a 2D mode makes me love this game even more.
I think that's just it. The mere existence and inclusion of the 2D version just makes it that much more awesome -- even if you have no intention of playing it straight through all the way to the end, or not at all, or for whatever other reason. It can just sit there pretty for as long as it wants -- and the definitive edition is still somehow a better game overall because of that, weirdly enough.
But diehards will obvious play it, and I happen to be one of them. So yay!
Really great Re-review, looking forward to playing this after work
Thanks for giving my joy bones a well-needed tickling, Tim!
