Tim Rogers original half-hour long review for this game was what convinced me to buy it, 80 hours later I completed it and the post-game content and it was the most enjoyable video game I've played in the last 8 years. I came here to just watch this video again because I miss it. I want nothing more than to erase this game from my memory and play it again without knowing anything
Metal slimes are easier when you unlock Erik's 'Critical Acclaim' skill. Another very important tip also involves Erik. He has a skill to steal items from enemies and it's very useful to apply that early on so you don't have to search for ingredients later when needing to craft.

i had a lot of trouble with the “walk on the wild side” quest, and i’m sure others have too. but i figured it out today. wait until you have all of the party members and start to get each of the characters (hero erik and selena) in pepped state one at a time. when one of them gets pepped up put them in your reserve and pull another party member out. even when they’re in the reserves they’ll keep the pepped up state. so once they’re all pepped up you can pull them all out and go kill the monster and finish it up. what a pain
Thanks for the tips. I have a vague memory of playing a dragon quest game a very, very long time ago, but your review tipped me over the edge. Looking forward to seeing what's in store.

It's so great this game has been released for pc. I haven't bought a console since the ps2 in 01 so I was able to enjoy DQ8. That game was super fun and had a great amount of things to do. Dragon Quest is such a great franchise and I will be very happy to be able to visit this world again

Some more standard Dragon Quest tips: - Save often and keep money in the bank so you don't lose it if your party gets wiped out. - Talk to NPCs during the day and during the night. A lot of them will have different dialogue. - Every time you get a new kind of key, go back to older areas and re-explore. Unless you keep track of them, it's easy to forget every locked door you come across. - Always check wells. - At least one of the slot machines in the casino is usually forgiving enough that if you start with enough coins, you're unlikely to lose everything and you will eventually hit a jackpot. - Don't discard or sell anything unless you absolutely have to. Seemingly useless items or gear can sometimes come in handy for side quests, crafting, etc. - Revisit towns from time to time and talk to NPCs. You won't get crucial information this way or anything like that, but it's fun to check in as these characters will often have something new to say later on that adds depth to the game.
Woke up this morning, watched playstation access, based on robs recommendation on todays video, watched your review, ordered my copy for pick up from best buys. :D
So glad I watched this. I’m not a newbie to jrpgs but this is my first dragon quest game. I’m actually happy that I got it because my life is so busy at the moment it’s the perfect game before I go to sleep.
Any tips on how to figure out Erik's accent? I like Erik, but he sounds like someone from the UK speaking American English trying to sound like he is from New York.
he has a new england accent (think boston), almost a mid-atlantic accent which would kind of make sense considering most of the characters have british accents. The mid-atlantic accent being a mix between new england and british (30s-40s old-timey accent you saw in movies).
This is true. I forget which, but one cutscene near the end of the game he doesn't cover it very well. To the point that made me wonder why that line was kept.
Note for Tip #5: The AI- even in Show No Mercy- are a LOT smarter now. This means you can auto metal slimes if you have the correct setup. Note for Tip #6: There will be a lot of times when certain team members are not available, so avoid heavy grinding until you have everyone or you feel necessary. This game is a lot less grind-heavy than for example, DQIX. Note for Tip #8: Go for critical hits on slimes at liquid+ (more efficient than many attacks). This means Thunder Thrust with Spears, Hatchet Man with Axe, Critical Claim with Guile (Erik) Note for Tip #11: You can spend literal hundreds of hours on Dragon Quest.
These videos are really a double edged sword for new players. I never ever played a dragon quest game before may of this year. I was like "Oh I heard some good things about this game, let me get it." not having seen any gameplay any trailer at all. This made the game so much more fun for me. If you watch this now I feel like you are missing out on a lot of the confusion of not knowing the story or who your partners are going to be. Still great video though and I still rewatch your review now and then :)
For SMT fans: Play with the 'Weak Monsters EXP' and 'Super Strong Monsters' settings. The game feels so much more engaging after playing the first 5 hours without them.
I really fucking miss tim Rogers 😢 2023 I still watch his old vids and always show them to friends who I convince to play dragon quest DMC 5 and a bunch of other games
Admittedly this video told me everything I already knew, however also as somebody who's played every Dragon Quest a number of times? That's probably why. Still, enjoyed watching!
This is my first dragon quest game. First, I wanted to thank you for the review. I am enjoying the game so far (although as a final fantasy vet I am not used to the old school hp/mp values).
Whenever he does an aside to make a minor point or tip he strings his words together and lowers his voice below the sound of the background music. I’m wearing noise cancelling headphones and am still missing a bunch. “Getting better ears” isn’t an option, we have the ones we’re born with.
Just beat the game if your having a hard time with the final boss use your sword as an item it helped tremendously also if your metal slime hunting use Jade lightning Thrust and Erik critical claim to instantly kill them if u don’t have metal slash

@@Gunplabro I don't know, DQ3 is pretty epicly long. Like, the "final boss" is actually a head fake for the entire second half of the game long. DQ1 and 2 are pretty short though.
About grinding, you could use a method that involves pep, you can use hallelujah to increase exp earned and electro light to spawn metal slimes of any sort depending on your party's current average level
Agreed. I love this content, but either fully subtitle these videos or talk into the microphone properly.. Seriously, If I didn't REALLY like Tim's work (DQ11 review was great), no way in hell would I watch videos with such poor audio.

Ok so here are some of tips I have only playing this game in the series and being new to it
1) Rest at every campsite/Inn as this unlocks the location for your Zoom spell and trust me you will be backtracking if your wanna complete quests
2) Dont worry about allocating skill points incorrectly as you can reset them from any save point and you may want to do this is your going to grind vs story battles (ie some weapons like whips and boomerangs are awesome for grinding but are terrible against bosses)
3) Check not just pots but bookshelves as they contain recipe books
4) While you can buy Items from the Weapon/Armor shops its not really needed as you will eventually learn how to make those items and the improved versions you can make are far better, instead save your money for purchasing components
5) Pay Attention to equipment effects instead of simply just the equipments stats, for instance the Falcon blade while being weaker attacks twice per attack which is alot more damage than a stronger weapon
6) Set your battle speed to fast it makes grinding take alot less time
7) While you dont need to massively "grind" do fight every enemy you encounter to keep on par with levels
8) Critical hits bypass metal slimes defense are will instantly kill them, use skills such as light lightning thrust or hatchet man to inflict crits and one shot metal slimes, also characters not in the active party gain exp so dont worry about having to switch in off hand party members to gain levels
9) Charm is a stat that can sometimes make enemies become infatuated with your characters and isnt that useful except for a certain rather flamboyant performer whos best attacks are based off of it
thought i was increasing my odds of dodging if i ran around the enemy like an idiot during battle...
Omg I did that too!

Woke up this morning, watched playstation access, based on robs recommendation on todays video, watched your review, ordered my copy for pick up from best buys. :D
I'm a simple man, I hear Tim Rogers I click like button brah
Brah?
I’m happy to see Dragon Quest and Valkyria Chronicles 4 getting love from print, websites, and RUclips.
Man I really don't like Kotaku but I do like this guy. Then again I really like Dragon Quest so maybe I'm skewed. Good job anyways.
Well i'm not a DQ fan, but I agree.
So glad I watched this. I’m not a newbie to jrpgs but this is my first dragon quest game. I’m actually happy that I got it because my life is so busy at the moment it’s the perfect game before I go to sleep.
The voice audio was mixed waaaaaay too low.

I now have the definitive edition of Dragon Quest XI S and love how chill it is.. playing on PS
That man is literally a saviour, where can I pray to him? I wanna go into a church and say my thanks...
Why is this guy so good? I'm an immediate convert.
"There are some who call him...Tim."
This guy again xD in for a treat
Definitely gonna play this on Switch. I had never beaten a DQ 'til this year so i'm working my way through the original 3. ❤
I will have to tell my husband I was right lol ^^
The voice actor is in fact British and it sounds like he's trying to do a New York accent lol
He definitely does NOT have a New England accent.
This means Thunder Thrust with Spears, Hatchet Man with Axe, Critical Claim with Guile (Erik)
Note for Tip #11: You can spend literal hundreds of hours on Dragon Quest.
I imagine Tim sitting back with a glass of sake while explaining this.
Still great video though and I still rewatch your review now and then :)
dang dude i have my volume maxed out and can barely hear you

For SMT fans: Play with the 'Weak Monsters EXP' and 'Super Strong Monsters' settings.
The game feels so much more engaging after playing the first 5 hours without them.
You should make a review of each dragon quest.
Agreed. Starting with VII, then IX then VIII.
X can piss right off.
I really fucking miss tim Rogers 😢 2023 I still watch his old vids and always show them to friends who I convince to play dragon quest DMC 5 and a bunch of other games
I am a 30 year dq lover and your reviews and videos have me soooooooooo stoked for this game
Admittedly this video told me everything I already knew, however also as somebody who's played every Dragon Quest a number of times? That's probably why. Still, enjoyed watching!
Bro ur the best ever lived but either talk louder or turn the Buster Keaton OST down. Much love
This is my first dragon quest game. First, I wanted to thank you for the review. I am enjoying the game so far (although as a final fantasy vet I am not used to the old school hp/mp values).
All the final fantasies used to be like that though. I played final fantasy since the the first one on the original Nintendo
I have my volume pumped all the way and I can barely hear you.
Get better ears.
Whenever he does an aside to make a minor point or tip he strings his words together and lowers his voice below the sound of the background music. I’m wearing noise cancelling headphones and am still missing a bunch. “Getting better ears” isn’t an option, we have the ones we’re born with.
Weird how I can understand everything he's saying without fancy headphones
It’s not weird at all. I am hearing impaired. You like most people are not.
@@huffmyshorts that is a comment from a kid or a stupid ass
Just beat the game if your having a hard time with the final boss use your sword as an item it helped tremendously also if your metal slime hunting use Jade lightning Thrust and Erik critical claim to instantly kill them if u don’t have metal slash
"boot it up, buddy"
Dragon Quest! What a fantastic Dragon Quest tip video to follow up your Dragon Quest review, boy I can't get enough of Dragon Quest. Ever since I played Dragon Quest VIII. Thanks to your Dragon Quest Videos I'm going to purchase Dragon Quest XI Tomorrow and take my time playing Dragon Quest again after so long.

Dragon Quest!
Either the music is too loud or your voice is too low, or a combination of the both
At first I thought their was something wrong with my phones audio until I released no the video sounds almost like it's being whispered

Honestly, more reviews. More Dragon Quest related reviews. Your 100% right about Dragon Quest being a 30 minute to 1 hour a day game. Except usually my playthroughs are usually 2-3 hours a time. This game reminds me a lot of Dragon Quest 8 though.
sony/squareenix should pay tim a good chunk of money cuz i'm pretty sure his videos alone have sold about 30000 copies of this game
Got it yesterday, spent 4 hours (my entire free time) last night playing and forced myself to go to sleep. Wish I could take a sick day 😫
Thanks for the video!
you only play half hour of a jrpg??? what sorcery is this show ME!
The older dragon quest games were pretty simple. You can beat the first 3 games in like a day if you know what you're doing.
@@Gunplabro I don't know, DQ3 is pretty epicly long. Like, the "final boss" is actually a head fake for the entire second half of the game long.
DQ1 and 2 are pretty short though.
3 isn't that long if you know what you're doing.
If I start playing Dragon Quest 11 the shortest I can play is 10 hours.
About grinding, you could use a method that involves pep, you can use hallelujah to increase exp earned and electro light to spawn metal slimes of any sort depending on your party's current average level
the sound is too low
My last Dragon Quest game was Dragon Warrior VII on PSX. I'm tempted by Dragon Quest XI now.
Interestingly, I'm watching this on my crappy little phone and I can hear him just fine. But it is quite on my laptop.
I love this review. Comedic and informative with brilliant pacing.
Is that movie trailer voice tone one you use in real life or just in videos?
I. LOVE. THIS. GUY.
I want him to do ALL reviews and tips... he is just soo.... awesome.
Can you like... record yourself reading all my books please? You have the best voice lol
I bought this game after seeing the other video. If wasnt for Tim Rogers id never known Dragon Quest or Puff Puff. Thanks for playing.
Ugh can we get a mic raise? I felt like I was listening to someone do an ASMR video
thats the best part
This is the essence of Wonderboy Timmy Rogers. Embrace it.
Agreed. I love this content, but either fully subtitle these videos or talk into the microphone properly.. Seriously, If I didn't REALLY like Tim's work (DQ11 review was great), no way in hell would I watch videos with such poor audio.
Lol asmr came to my mind too
Don't be entitled. You can leave Tim's video's because they have poor audio, and head to a channel that has poor understanding, poor charisma, poor jokes, and poor effort. Even with the poor audio the quality of this upload is miles above most content. If you want to be OCD about the audio and demand changes or you'll leave it is honestly your loss.
10 hours in and its at least as good as 8. Its arguably the best looking JRPG ever. The story bounces along and the writing is pretty good (as is the VA). If you have the slightest love for the genre you really have to get this.
why do you force yourself to sound like a pervert
Don't know if it have been subjected but : pro metal hunter tips: Erik with the sure crit skill ... 1 metal encounter => 1 sure XP jackpot especially when hunting heavy HP bags ( metal king slimes... )
Does the Western version have the Japanese voice acting as an option?
the japanese version never had voice acting to begin with :-O
Woah.
Ha ha ha. Yea. The Jaoanese voice acting is perfect. You just mute voices in options. It's flawlessly integrated into the game.
Tim, you make the best videos on this channel. I wish you reviewed most games on kotaku.
Thanks for being informative and entertaining.
No offense Tim Roger's but the voice of Google translate text to speech is much more human like than yours. Like the game and content though.
I'm more bothered by the low hard to hear volume of his voice
I like his voice :)
Ever since I created a new draconian quest file I’ve been addicted to this game. The difficulty is the Pokémon experience I’ve always wanted 😩🙌
My tip for this game is turn the music down its horrible
But I like the music
The music is really good
It's not as good as expected... but horrible? No.
Not the best, but still succeeded in bringing the atmosphere.
How come its horrible? lol
People say its bad because its MIDI or synth but every DQ game uses synth yet never complained about them
Your reviews are the highlight of RUclips. Congrats
