I first saw the game in a promotion on a game manual somewhere, I was instantly intrigued but it wasn't until 3 years later that I actually got to play it. When I did, I was instantly hooked, the game was the largest game on the DS I believe at the time for me. I spent around months playing the game since I loved doing side-quests and I was also afraid I'd lose out on something. Needless to say I was quite OP when I fought against Corvus. My character, Kab, was an Armamentalist with a complete mastery of the sword. His mercenary and friend, Trump (as in trump card against the Wight Knight, not THAT Trump) Rose, the Priest who could oneshot MKS with Thunder Thrust and made my entire party OP FAST aanndd Rui, the Sage, who I imagined wasn't that "in tune" with the world. aaahh thanks for discussing this game, I absolutely adore it and I love seeing videos about Dragon Quest in general.
This game was practically my childhood. My mom got herself a copy, and after realizing it had co-op, she got me my own copy for Christmas and we worked together to finish the game in record time. I say that, but she actually made me fight Corvus on my own, and after 20 failed attempts, she jumped in and helped me put him down. After we had both beaten the game, we did the grottoes together for years after that. This game is a masterpiece.
Dragon quest IX is definitely one of the best games I've ever played. The customization, the amount of content, the stories (I felt so sad with the one about the doll) where all incredible. But there's something that no mather how hard I search for it, no one seems to appreciate it. I'm talking about the battle animations. In most turn-based rpgs your team and the enemies stay still, and when they attack they leap forward, do the animation and then leap backwards like they where proffesional athletes. On the other hand, in dragon quest IX there is a complete battle coreography with camera movement wich makes the battle look a lot more real and fluid. So far no other RPG, or at least most of them, have this feature, apparently because "It makes grinding too time consuming". I hope this feature comes back in the next game of the series, because not even dragon quest XI had it, which really surprised me, as there is free movement when attacking (thought it's useless). Anyway, let me know in the comments if you also love this feature as much as I do.
Wow until I found someone who thinks same like me, I love the battles in this game actually there were a lot to talk about this but I know that we already understand the feeling of this. There’s no other DQ like this one. I call it the little giant...
I loved that! Battle animations in this game are fantastic. I've read this is because the game was intended to be an action JRPG early on, so with free movement, but then they rolled back to turn based gameplay- while keeping the characters freely moving around the battlefield. It's great.
That'd be.. Awesome! I'm hoping that Dragon Quest 12 will share a bunch of similarities to this game. Dragon Quest 11 is an amazing game as well, but I feel like this game has more of an Immersive Adventure feel to it, And the customization tops all the other Dragon Quests by far.
Correction: my first dragon quest and introduction to the series creating a life long love of the series yet one I never beat, grinding up a sage at the end takes a minute
Maybe I'm old school, but I started with the first back when it was called Dragon Warrior. It was just plain hard. The same could be said about its sequel. The third one was MUCH better. It wasn't until the fourth DQ game that I got even remotely into the series. The first three I lost interest cause they were so hard and their stories were blah. The third was decent, but I didn't really dig it like the fourth. Anyways, I came across this game via emulation and after maybe 20 minutes I ordered a copy from Amazon. Looking forward to throwing down on this one. I liked this one right away by virtue of the fact the outfits change and the combat is a little more than just the usual screens from games 1-6. The story might be a little wonky, but I'm stoked.
This game honestly hit harder than anything else, the graphics are a bit outdated but the story is incredible and I love the characters so much. It’s just such a creative story with a lot of feeling, I’d kill for a remake with updated graphics
The story is meh compares to others DQ games, especially 5, 8, and 11 (i never played 10). The main strength of DQ9 is the multiplayer ability with your friends and showing off your equipment to your friends. The post game contents also is great, again if you playing with your friends. I replayed this game with emulator, this game is boring af.
@@RRP6632I disagree. Some of the stories of the towns are heart-wrenching, like in Port Llaffan and Coffinwell. I do wish the characters in your party had more personality, but the stories in the towns make up for it, I feel.

@@lancelpaulguarin4780 The character you play doesn't have to be fancy for the game to have a deep meaning and sentimental point of view, allocating to the fact it was more made for plot and differing experiences with the boss fights, rather then the slow meandering plot lines of inter-character interactions and conversations. While DQIX does have some meaningful dialogue, most of the story is contained in the emotions behind the development of the fights and situations presented. Take the cut scene at the beginning when the main character falls off the observatory. It shows a lot more in depth of what he might have experienced rather than if It was all dialogue. In fact if you actually thought about it the cutscene is a strong statement by the developers in the way they set it up. The main character, barely of age just a day if not only a few hours, old enough to be in the protectorate by himself is suddenly able to be seen by humans, lost his wings and halo, and is separated from everyone he knows. While lack of extensive dialogue may make this game seem 'Bland' to you. If you took time, rather then making small minded, and misguided attempts at slandering this game, you may realize the finer points of consideration and intrigue brought into the story by its developers. I remember I played this game everyday after school with my friends and it was one of my favorite memories. although I played other dragon quests, this was my favorite. I'm glad this beautiful game reached to other countries. When I saw the smash bros/dragon quest trailer, I got a little emotional XD. ight thats enough see yall.
I love this game, one of my all time favorite games. When Greygnarl "died" i was so sad. His armor and his cut Szene are not from this world. When i saw his shadow in the credits, my heart melted. I wish they will remake that game.
I remember getting this game when I was like 7 because I thought it was some sort of dress up game (I was wrong). So worth it though, best game for the DS I’ve played, 7 year old me was not prepared for all that emotion and uncontrollable sobbing, it’s just so good! One of those games where you could play in over and over again and just NEVER get fed up of it
Koemi 01 I was the exact same! I got it for Christmas 6 days before I turned 7, and I remember wanting it because the adverts showed how you could change your characters clothes. To this day it’s my favourite game and has shaped so much of my personality and childhood
Did the advertisement in the 'Girl Talk' magazine sell it as a dress up game to you? I know that I had asked my parents for the game before the magazine add came out, but idk if I got the game before or after, but you get I had a laugh going back over the add and being like "hey, that's alltrades, not the observatory!" That was probably the only pagespread of that series of magazines I've actually kept, and i still have it. Good memories.

Way way late to the video here. But like many others here, I grew up with DQ9, in fact it was my introduction to the franchise that I call my favorite to this day. I hope one day it gets remastered for the switch
Something that I didn't realise until I played through the game again when I was older was that there were quite a few stories about mortality. Like with Stornaway is was about the Wight Knight and his lost kingdom, Coffinwell was the loss of a loved one, Zere Rocks was about dying alone, Bloomingdale was dying young. Seems kinda fitting for quite a few stories for our immortal to experience was how the fragile mortality affected those around them.

FF12 2 revenant wings, the DQMJ 1 & 2, FFTA2, Platinum, HeartGold SoulSilver are solid contenders. What makes DQ9 so good is its length, so much Boss to farm that you basically did only the half of the game after finishing the main story. But the gameplay isnt really interesting after a while.

Me and my wife literally put 200+ hours into multiplayer on this game. I still have yet to play DQ11 (though I just recently got it for Switch) but DQ9 is my favourite alongside DQ5, they're both great for different reasons. The main story is really only the beginning. The game transforms into an open world RPG for the epilogue. It's absolutely massive in scope, probably something around 5-7 times larger than the main story.
Honestly mate you’re gonna love DQ11. It’s easily one of my favourite games of all time. So much content, great storytelling and the best part of the whole thing are the characters.
I bought this game on a whim in 2011 while away from home for the Army. Easily one of the greatest games I have ever played. All the customization offered in this game is unparalleled in the other DragonQuests, the absolutely ridiculous amount of hours you can sink into this game and still not complete it, and the nostalgic factor knowing this game played a huge role in helping me pass time while I was homesick. ❤

I remember asking my mom for a Dragon Ball Z game for christmas 2010 and waking up to this because she didn't know the difference lmao. I was reluctant, but instantly fell in love with the game. The music, the story, the cheesy puns all over the place...it was beautiful. There was so much to do, and I loved doing every bit of it. Goku the Gladiator, Krillin the Martial Artist, Grace the Ranger, and Korrin the Paladin will always hold a special place in my heart. I actually restarted my save about 2 years ago and played through a bit of the story. I haven't finished bc the grinding is a huge time commitment now compared to other games I play, but I still absolutely love the game even 10 years later.
DQIX is an amazing game and helped me through a lonely childhood. Totally underrated and honestly still holds up today with how impressively detailed the world is. The DLC quest are still the greatest way a game has extended its content in my eyes.😌
DQIX was my childhood, and some of my long-gone best mate’s childhoods. We beat this game several times, over a dozen. The multiplayer is amazing. It’s half the fun in the game, alongside the great story and huge post game content. Every piece of equipment save for accessories change your character’s appearance. You can easily invest over 300 hours in this game, it’s incredible. The only thing you may dislike about this game is the lack of personality in the side characters, who are basically just hero clones who don’t talk and are never acknowledged.

Given you can affect how your character looks it still is a dress up game, just with a big story about fighting monsters attached
I thought it was monster joker so i was very sad.. But then i played it and it was great !
Did the advertisement in the 'Girl Talk' magazine sell it as a dress up game to you? Something that I didn't realise until I played through the game again when I was older was that there were quite a few stories about mortality. Like with Stornaway is was about the Wight Knight and his lost kingdom, Coffinwell was the loss of a loved one, Zere Rocks was about dying alone, Bloomingdale was dying young. Seems kinda fitting for quite a few stories for our immortal to experience was how the fragile mortality affected those around them.

I haven't finished bc the grinding is a huge time commitment now compared to other games I play, but I still absolutely love the game even 10 years later.
jack of all trades master of nuun i just noticed this haha
Thank you so much for this nostalgia trip I sunk so many hours into this game it will always be one of my favorite games ever
