@@user-ok8yq6nc6xHe probably just rushed the main quest and tried to skip every mob possible, if you do sidequests as they appear and take your time you don't really have to grind at all except for some optional stuff.
My first time it took me like 65 ish for act 1 and 2 including sidequests and then 90 total for the whole thing, wouldve took me longer if i didnt abuse early electro light, took me like 3 ish hrs of grinding from 35ish to get to lvl 99 so i dont get the point
Took 90+ hours from me to get every character lv 99 and make all the best +3 weapons、+3 armors and then finally, less than 9 minutes to beat off the giant beetle
To be fair, I always liked DQ's handling of the grinding with the metal ennemies. Once you understand that these are the shit to grind, you start minmaxing your party arround the fact that you need ways to deal with these, understanding the many tools the game gives ya to beat them and once you encounter them it's always a big moment where you hold your breath and pray for good rng. I get that it ultimately becomes really frustrating, but it's also like the fun of going into a casino and hoping for a good roll, and in the end even if the odds are stacked against you you always end up having results. In any case it's way better than "lesser ennemy bashing"
3:52 Holy shit. So I tend to listen to RUclips videos instead of watching them. I had no idea how ingrained FFVII and Chrono Trigger were embedded in my mind. Instantly knew the music.
Instead of going on a rant about random encounters vs avoidable encounters I'll just keep it short. Earthbound has the best grinding mechanic. If your obviously stronger than the enemy, it's instantly killed and you get the exp.
That's pretty common for any JRPG and in DQ case, lower level enemies would just run away from you and there's also enemies that mutiply your EXPx10/x20 no matter what.
@@TylerEdlin84 alright, I understand why you may dislike it, I know many people don't like the battle mechanic. I think that earthbound still holds up to this date, however, as you don't play it just for the battling, you play it for the funny characters and story.

Almost like not everyone, even other jrpg fans like grinding. Cause he's talking to an audience that may not like them but he wants to show off the ones he thinks are worth playing?
I feel like Dunkey at least partially set himself up for not enjoying the second half of the game because the level curve caught up with him not doing random encounters in the first half. The game assumes you're going to be fighting a lot in the dungeons, and balances the bosses around what level you're likely to be at by the time you fight them. Having a really low level curve means the game is way too easy to make too easy for yourself. Sounds like Dunkey just doesn't like JRPGs and doesn't want to play them the way they're designed to be played, and then blamed the game when the game pushed back against his refusal to engage with the game on its own terms. Despite this, I still respect Dunkey, and I like the fact that he still gives a lot of respect to positive aspects of games, even in a genre he personally hates. signed, a JRPG fan who also hates excessive grinding.
I had played this game at my grandparents house when I was younger and I had forgotten the name, and it was giving me a ton of anxiety trying to remember it, because I thought I was crazy and it never actually exsited. (Edit: The Game was, "Dragon Quest Swords" I think.)
I only found myself needing to grind at all like 3 times, and I’ve put 160 hours in. The game is a lot more enjoyable if you take your time. Also, it’s definitely balanced with completion of the side quests in mind.
This game is extremely charming and the world building and the characters are fantastic. I've played other dragon quest games and this by FAR has the least grinding so don't let that put you off. Although I did spend 100 hours on the main story so maybe it is grindy if you go through it quicker
It makes me so happy seeing all these positive comments! Playing Dragon Quest 9 growing up it always made me kinda sad how like nobody was talking about it, I had never played a game so emotional, exciting and fun with such an amazing creative story. Now Dragon Quest 11 is here the series is getting so much more attention and I love it!
You can thank Bravely Default for that. Square Enix didn't think JRPGs were popular in the west (notice how Final Fantasy at that time tried distancing itself from turn-based combat more and more), until Bravely Default sold more copies in America than Japan. In Japan it is. They had to make the swimsuit costumes tame in order to get an A rating (Japan's equivalent of E). But puff-puff is fine apparently.
@@audiovisual51 I heard that in Japan they're more strict on violent content while the west is more strict on sexual content.
If Dragon Quest XI Echoes of an Elusive Age S Definitive Edition is so good why isn’t there a Dragon Quest XI Echoes of an Elusive Age S Definitive Edition 2?
Finally, a game that uses the concept of someone being the chosen one. This story is a mastapiece!
Unlimited Sand! I know you're being sarcastic, but this concept was actually original to DQ1. It may be the definition of every RPG nowadays, but they are really all just elaborate DQ clones at heart. No, I am not joking. Look it up!
I think Knack had a similar approach but it went in a better direction, far more revolutionary.

@@audiovisual51 which is why breath of the wild is so innovated, the elf dude is in a blue tunic now

honestly, it's so cliche that it's kinda charming. Especially since they spell out that you are the chosen one from the start rather than saving it for a "twist"
According to dunkey, he hates turn based combat, anime shit, and RPGs.... But he gave it a 3/5. This review has convinced me to buy the game
Because it's that good.
I thought the same thing. If this game is a 3/5 to someone who doesn't love those things, then it must be a 4/5 for someone who does.
sparkadus it’s a 5/5 for lots of us jrpg homies
He also praised Persona 5. If the turn based anime rpg is good, he will acknowledge it.
I think he also said he liked Persona 5. I’d like to see him do a review on that
This made me buy the game and honestly its been a while since ive played a game that makes me feel as happy and joyful as this one. Thanks dunkey 🙏

“20 hours of game stretched into 40”
Me now feeling sad that it took me over 100 hours to fully complete the game.
Thats not sad at all. That just means you didn't rush through the game like dunkey did. Also I doubt he even did the post game which is a good 30 hours right there. The game is supposed to take like 100 or so hours.

Wait, a 3 from Dunkey?!

I think it's weird that dunkey didn't mention that almost quarter of the NPCs are really really FAT dudes
definitely made the USA localization team’s job easier
It’s an U.S simulator.
The dub is pretty good.
They added the Nanking denial mini-game. You can thank the music composer for that one.
so almost 3/4 of the NPCs are fit. It is way better than the US, then
Me: man he fucking hated this game

Instead of going on a rant about random encounters vs avoidable encounters I'll just keep it short. Earthbound has the best grinding mechanic. If your obviously stronger than the enemy, it's instantly killed and you get the exp.
That's pretty common for any JRPG and in DQ case, lower level enemies would just run away from you and there's also enemies that mutiply your EXPx10/x20 no matter what.
Earthbound also sucks
@@TylerEdlin84 said no person ever
Cade-o I played it 20 years ago, didn’t like it then, tried it last year again still don’t get the appeal. It was just blah.
@@TylerEdlin84 alright, I understand why you may dislike it, I know many people don't like the battle mechanic. I think that earthbound still holds up to this date, however, as you don't play it just for the battling, you play it for the funny characters and story.
This was my exact experience with this game, not caring about grinding until the Squid boss. And that battle music haunts me every night.

@@danielahn5140 maybe because he's just giving his opinion as someone who may not like the tedium of the battles, yet likes literally everything else about the game. "How you not gonna like Platypunk?!"

I like Blyatpunk more.
I didnt find dragon quest 11 grindy at all, I beat mordegon on my first try
Cool

Now you have DQ11, basically a love letter to its own genre.
