As a kid, I brought one of these on a road trip. Stunk up the whole car. I tried ripping out and tossing just the Earthbound sections, but the whole magazine was contaminated by then. Parents made me toss the whole thing.

Yes, the answer for the proze was pizza, and the prize was a mach pizza aor freshner. A month ago, chuggaconroy sent it through the mail to see if he can still get it.

Having the game and guide when I was a kid, I remember there were more scratch and sniffs at the end of it. I remember I scratch and sniffed carbon dog AND diamond dog, as the dog itself changes into it. It was a found memory since it kinda made the game more *immersive*. I don't know exactly how many there were, but at least another page like the one you guys showed in the guide

I remember having the player's guide and I swear either I was just about to get a stomach virus, or I had one already, but I scratched and sniffed the card that had the SHROOOOOOM!!!! boss on it and I started experiencing cold sweats and horrible nausea. I had (and still have somewhere) the original Earthbound cartridge with the guide. When you showed the pictures of the cards, I immediately recalled what they smelled like precisely. Smell memory is intense.

The smells in the strategy guide were supposed to be Hotsauce+Boiled Hotdogs, Athlete's Foot, Potting Soil, Bananas, Burning Rubber, and a Pepperoni Pizza if you emailed Nintendo your guess at the mystery scent and was right, you'd get a Mach Pizza Delivery Man Car Freshener....which I think would be weird considering this game was for kids who wouldn't have cars... but seeing as my mom had this game since I was 2 and she had the car freshener packed in the damn game box...Let me tell you opening that box to play the game when I was old enough was a "treat" because of how much it stunk. But the game was fun and became one of my favorites despite this.

Try those Febreeze vent clip air fresheners. I used two and the scent lasted for years after the air fresheners were empty.

They had a distinct smell that was like a sweet/bitter chemical smell, not unlike
the sample inserts you get for colognes and perfumes out of magazines. Weird stuff!

I remember the big box copy of Earthbound pretty well. It's one of the few memories I have of actually physically going to the store and renting SNES games because it's one of those mundane things you don't think about... it's more about actually playing the game. I remember this one though because the box was so big. It was like "Wow! I gotta play this!". Best decision ever because Earthbound is my favorite video game. In fact when I rented it, the store even let you rent the Player's Guide along with it for no extra charge.
